Baby Fireside Vest

Materials needed:

2 skeins Premier Yarns Purple Marl Everyday Soft yarn.

4.5mm straight knitting needles

*needles and/or yarn can be changed, as long as you

ensure you have the proper gauge*

A few yards of yarn in a contrasting color, for the ties. I

recommend single-strand yarn or thread, so you can use

multiple strands and braid them together.

Abbreviations: CO: Cast on

BO: bind off

Gauge: 20 stitches = 4 inches in garter stitch

Size: This vest pattern is sized to fit 0-3 months (3-6 mos, 9-12 mos)

Measurements in inches:

Chest (closed): 18 ½, (19 ½, 21)

Length: 8, (9, 9 ½)

Instructions

Front/Hood CO 150 (166, 178) stitches

Work in garter stitch until piece measures 2 ¼ (2 ½, 3) inches from CO edge, then continue to “Front Left” section.

Front Left

Knit the first 38 (42, 45) stitches, turn your work, knit 38 (42, 45) back.

Repeat the previous row until this section measures 4 ½ (4 ¾, 5 ¼) inches from CO edge.

BO those 38 (42, 45) stitches.

Hood

Knit the next 74 (82, 88) stitches, turn your work, and knit 74 (82, 88) back.

Repeat the previous row until this section measures 5 ½ (6, 6 ½) inches from CO edge.

BO those 74 (82, 88) stitches.

Front Right

Work the final 38 (42, 45) stitches in garter until piece measures 4 ½ (4 ¾, 5 ¼) from CO edge.

BO all stitches.

Back

CO 38 (42, 45) stitches.

Work in garter stitch until piece measures 9 ½ (10, 10 ½) from CO edge.

BO all stitches.

Putting it all together

The Body

First, take the long front piece, fold it in half, and stitch up the back of the hood section.

Second, attach the front left and front right shoulder sections to the back piece, making sure the garter rows on the back

piece run vertically, not horizontally. Then stitch up the sides, leaving approximately 3 ¼ (3 ¾, 4 ¼) inch gaps for where

the armholes will be.

Last, seam the bottom of the hood to the back section. There may be more hood stitches than back stitches, but that’s

okay. Just distribute them as evenly as possible.

The Sleeves

The sleeves are super easy to finish. Just fold them up

the shoulder as far as you’d like, and stitch around to

keep them in place.

Knitting the bottom band

Pick up and knit stitches around the bottom of the vest. For

every garter ridge on the body (a ridge is composed of two

rows), pick up one stitch.

Work these stitches in garter until the band measures 1 (1 ½,

1 ¾) inches from pick-up.

BO all stitches.

Adding the ties

With your small amount of contrasting yarn, make the four ties. Take lengths of yarn measuring approximately

14 inches each, and hitch them to the body where you’d like the ties to be. To create a hitch, follow the

pictures below:

Note that for each tie, I used 6 lengths of single-strand thread held together. After hitching, I then braided the

strands and placed a knot at the end to prevent unraveling.

Weave in all ends, block if needed (it wasn’t needed for the featured vest), and enjoy!
