President’s Editorial Greetings BAARS Members and Supporters.

At our last meeting Brian Gundy of For Goodness Snakes (http://www.for-goodness-snakes.com/)

was our featured speaker. Brian breeds spectacular Ball Python morphs—some real beauties were

on hand to view. His talk was about his herp presentations. They differ from our usual BAARS

shows where we are at a table and people come up and we show and tell one-on-one or a small

group at a time. With the presentations, you have an audience and can talk to a lot of people at

once. Sometimes, BAARS does such presentations (usually to a pre-school audience).

Brian’s lead is, “If you like puppies, you’ll like reptiles.” And who doesn’t like puppies!?

Then he teaches the audience how to hold a snake. This is one activity I always do at our BAARS shows, often saying,

“Let the snake think it’s in control, while in fact you really are.” And then a side

comment to the parent(s), “Good future spouse training”.

Next is an over-the-shoulder with a snake. This

is a common thing we do at our BAARS shows,

and often the parents are bringing out their

cameras for a shot. Next, we all got to see a

demonstration where BAARS member Pete

Marshall wore a blindfold and a huge Tegu

licked his cheek. After that, it was having an

audience member palpate the heart, etc.

For the finale, a bunch of audience members,

myself included, each took a section of a very

large Burmese Python and held it up with both

hands. I had a demented vision of that

bombastic personal trainer, Jillian Micheals

(from “The Biggest Loser and advertiser on TV

for Nordic Track), screaming at us as we did alternating curls with the snake. “Is

that all you’ve got?!” A big “THANKS” to Brain for all this.

Our next meeting is Friday, April 24th. The theme is “Bring Your Herp”, so a chance for us all to show and tell. I think

we’ll see some interesting surprises (not a Komodo Dragon, but we can always hope!).

There are a LOT of BAARS shows coming up, so please go to our website and check out the dates, times, and

locations. Please help out if you can!
