BA (Hons) Photography The University of Northampton’s Photography Programme is interested in your potential as a prospective student and future Photography professional. We want you to send us a PDF digital portfolio of your work. The PDF file must be no more than 15mb in size. The digital portfolio must include examples of your work, sketchbook/journal work and a piece of writing such as an essay or a contextual report. In your portfolio you should demonstrate your interests and ideas, what inspires, excites and influences you, as well as your photographic skills, experience, and working/research methods. If you have one, you may also include a link to your website or Instagram page. Please note that your application will still be subject to you meeting entry criteria. Read this document thoroughly as important instructions and tips on preparing a portfolio are below.

How to prepare your PDF Portfolio File 1. Include your full name in capitals and include your UCAS ID number. 2. Include 15-20 images of your work plus at least three examples of your

sketchbook/journal work which documents research evidence. 3. Include one piece of written work – an essay or a contextual report such as a review of

an exhibition, which will give us some insight into how you write formally and your familiarity with key texts. There is no minimum or maximum word count for this and a piece of school/college course work could be submitted.

4. Make sure that the final PDF file is no larger than 15mb (resize the pdf if necessary and optimise the image sizes).

5. Name your PDF File with your UCAS number and your initials For example, if your UCAS number was 1234567 and your name was ‘A. Student’ then you would name your file 1234567AS

6. Send your digital portfolio PDF File directly to [email protected] 7. We will review your digital portfolio and will reply to you with a decision within 5 working

days. 8. If you have applied by the UCAS deadline, your portfolio submission should reach us as

soon as possible so that if you are successful you can be booked onto one of our Discovery days to experience our facilities and teaching in February, March or early April.

What we are looking for

• A passion for Photography • An understanding of the variety of applications of Photography • Research skills and ideas development • Evidence of engagement with photographic techniques and experimentation with a

variety of media • A methodical approach to project development • Knowledge relevant to the wider context in which images operate • Capacity to select appropriate material to illustrate personal ideas and aspirations.

Top portfolio tips

• Try to provide a careful selection of work in your portfolio, both ongoing projects and finished outcomes

• Select a range of work to demonstrate the range of your experience, abilities and interests

• Organise your portfolio into sections based on particular projects or themes • It is vital to show us how ideas are generated, the development of your projects, your

depth of research, and the resolution of problems towards visual outcomes. Sketchbook examples should evidence the starting point of your project, right through its development to finished outcomes.

• Contact sheets • Techniques • Notes on location shoots • Plans for presentation • Mood boards • Evidence of project management • Any other material relevant to your work
