WARNING
The M22 Binocular is provided with laser protection filters as indicated by the label located around thespindle. This label must not be removed. The laser protective coating is contained on the surfaces of the lenslocated behind the M22 binocular objective lens. If this lens is lost or damaged, the M22 binocular is non-operational and must be turned in. Use of a M22 binocular with a faulty coated lens may result in irreparable eyedamage if loser light is viewed through the M22 binocular.
b
DESCRIPTION & SPECIAL FEATURES:NOTE
The M22 Binocular is equipped with fold downeyecups (1) for use by personnel who wear eyeglasses to shorten the distance between eyes andeyepiece.
The M22 Binocular is a lightweight, compactinstrument intended for use in general fieldobservation and fire direction. One of thetelescopes of the binocular includes a horizontal andvertical reticle graduated in 10-mil increments.
The objective covers (2) and eye lens covers(3) provide protection for the M22 binocular. TheM22 binocular is equipped with a carrying strap (4)for easy portability. There is a loser safety coatingcode label (5) located around the spindle (6). Thelabel must not be removed.
The M22 binocular consists of two telescopeshinged at the center by an index pin and sleevearrangement.

The friction necessary to maintain theproper interpupillary distance (distancebetween the eyes) is created by specialgrease lubricant on the hinge pin. Once thisdistance is set for your eye spacing, thereading on the interpupillary scale (5) can benoted for future reference.
By rotating the knurled adapter ring (6)of the eyepieces, you can focus eachtelescope to accommodate your particularoptical characteristics. The reading on eachdiopter scale (7) should then be noted forfuture reference. The eye lens cover (8)should be placed over the eyepieces when theM22 binocular is not in use.

LASER PROTECTION FILTERS
WARNING
Use of a M22 binocular with a faultycoated lens may result in irreparable eyedamage if laser light is viewed through theM22 binocular.
The M22 binocular is provided with laser protectionfilters as indicated by the label located around thespindle. The laser protective coating is containedon the surfaces of the lens located behind the M22binocular objective lens. If this lens is lost ordamaged, the M22 binocular is considered non-operational and must be turned in. Under thespecial conditions when direct sunlight enters theM22 binocular, a portion of this light
will be reflected back, producing a sun glint whichmay be detectable at positions in the general targetfield.
4
HANDLING PRECAUTIONS
DO'S Handle the M22 binocular with care. Dropping or jarring the M22 binocular can damage or misalignthe optics. Use the carrying strap to protect against accidental dropping of the M22 binocular. Keepthe M22 binocular as clean and dry as possible and always store in clean, dry place when notactually in use. Follow the instructions outlined in this TM to obtain the best possible usage andservice from the M22 binocular.
DON'TS Do not use a dry cloth to clean the glass surfaces of the M22 binocular. Specific cleaninginstructions are given on page 13. Do not attempt to open or close the M22 binocular beyond its stoplimits, as this may damage internal and external parts. Do not unnecessarily expose the M22binocular to severe weather elements. Special precautions are noted on page 11 and 12. Do notforce the knurled adapter rings beyond marked diopter scale reading as this may damage internalparts.
5
HOW TO REMOVE/INSTALL NECK STRAP
1. Set carrying strap's buckles (1) and keepers (2) as shown.2. Insert one end of the carrying strap through the slot on the eye lens cover (3) and pass it through the slot
on the M22 binocular (4).
3. Pass the carrying strap through the keeper (2) and buckle (1).4. Repeat on the other side.Note: On right side, carrying strap passes through the M22 binoculars slot only.
6
OPERATING ADJUSTMENTS
WARNING
When using the M22 binocular, never point itdirectly at the sun. The heat generated by thefocused rays of the sun may cause seriousdamage to your eyes and to the opticalelements of the M22 binocular.
Interpupillary AdjustmentTo obtain the proper interpupillary setting for yourparticular eye spacing, view a distant object throughthe M22 binocular. Then, rotate the telescopesabout the center of hinge until both circular fields ofview have merged into one circle. Note the readingon the interpupillary scale (1) for future reference.
Diopter AdjustmentEach eyepiece of the M22 binocular has a diopterscale graduated from plus 4 to minus 4 in one-diopter increments and can be adjusted to suit youreyesight characteristics. Rotate the knurled adapterrings (2) to obtain the sharpest focus and note thescale reading for future reference.
7
NORMAL OPERATION
(1) Place carrying strap about your neck.(2) Remove eye lens cover by first rotating M22
binocular telescopes inward and then liftingoff eye lens cover.
(3) Unsnap objective covers from front of M22binocular and let them hang down from M22binocular.
(4) Close the telescopes of the M22 binocularuntil the interpupillary index scale is at theproper setting for use (see page 7).
(5) Rotate the eyepiece adapter rings to obtainthe proper diopter settings on the diopterscale (see page 7).
(6) When sighting through the M22 binocular, hold it in a comfortable and stable position.
(7) Refer to pages 11 and 12 for precautions tobe observed when unusual weather oratmospheric conditions prevail.
8
USE OF RETICLE
One of the telescopes of the M22 binocular includes a horizontal and vertical scale reticle graduated in 10-mil increment unit markings (1 unit - 10 mils, 2 units - 20 mils, etc.).
Fire corrections can be made by viewing the impact area and determining angular corrections by use of theleft or right horizontal reticle scale.
9
USE OF RETICLE (cont'd)
In determining range, if an object fills one 10 mil unit marking on the horizontal reticle scale and is knownto be 10 meters wide, the object is 1000 meters away. If the same size object fills two unit markings (20 mils), itwould be 500 meters away. When this formula is used, the distance will be given in the same units ofmeasurement (feet, meters, etc.) as is used in estimating the known size of the object. The same formula can beused to determine range with the vertical reticle scale when the height of an object is known. The use of thevertical scale is preferred (especially on level terrain), since objects are often viewed obliquely along thehorizontal axis.
10
EXTREME COLD(1) Avoid breathing directly on the optical
elements of the M22 binocular. The breath maycondense and freeze.
(2) Do not expose the M22 binocular tosudden and extreme temperature changes, such ascarrying it directly from a well-heated area into sub-zero temperatures. Extreme temperature changesmay cause the optical elements to crock.
EXTREME HEAT(1) Do not allow the M22 binocular to lie
unprotected from the direct rays of the sun. Theintensified heat may damage the M22 binocularmechanisms.
(2) Place the M22 binocular objective and eyelens covers on the M22 binocular before entering anair conditioned area. This will permit the binocularto cool down gradually and prevent condensationfrom forming.
11
OTHER EXTREME CONDITIONS
Sand and Dust(1) Always keep the M22 binocular objective and
eye lens covers on when not actually in use. Sand anddust will etch glass surfaces and can penetrate throughthe smallest openings causing damage to adjustingmechanisms.
(2) Upon completion of operations, remove allparticles of sand and dust from optical elements asinstructed on page 13 before installing protectiveobjective and eye lens covers.
High Humidity or Salty Conditions(1) Avoid exposing the M22 binocular to direct salt
spray. Salt water is extremely corrosive and can causeirreparable damage to the M22 binocular.
(2) Always dry the M22 binocular thoroughly afteruse and immediately clean lens as instructed on page13 and install objective and eye lens covers.
12
