EDITORIALAs we are still in the doldrums weatherwise, we are prone to reading a lot about our bikes as opposed to riding them. I was readingReal Classic and their editor Frank Westworth’sthoughts on the differences in current valuesbeing attached to the same capacity bikes produced by different manufacturers. In particular he was comparing 1950’s 350 singles and the Ariel NH being worth a lot less than the Norton model 50. Somewhere inbetween is our own B31. If we compare thesefor what they are, or were, a basic ‘get you to work bike’ and medium range tourer, withcomfortable capacity for pillion, then really they should be valued about the same. Or should they? Why is there such a difference? Is the Norton really that much better than the B31 or the Ariel? Food for thought!

This month we have the first part of a crackingrestoration and rebuild article by Alan Bragg, with a lot of inspiring activity in making sensible modifications during the process. Youmay remember, Alan was a prize winner at the 2012 Open Day with his fabulous M33. Part II will follow next month.

The cover picture is of a working BSA in Indonesia and is a taster for an article sent to us by Ashley Blair for BSAOC New Zealand.More details inside…

Lots more WANTED ads in the Bazaar thismonth, so another opportunity to help out fellowmembers and free up more space in the shed!

Looking ahead to the summer, we have, for the last time, the booking form for the International Rally as the booking deadline of1st April approaches. Also, get your order forclothing etc. for the National Rally and OpenDay. By the way, John Michael is seeking bids for an unclaimed prize, which is time limited so be quick! The proceeds will be used for the National Rally funds.

The spring Members’ Meeting is booked forMarch and the AGM for April, both at the usual venue, Long Compton, and all are welcome.

Look forward to seeing you there.

Please can we remind members that all the Committee are volunteers; we all respond as soon as possible and some positions, for example, the librarian in particular, involve

a lot of time consuming research to find out details for members. We sometimes go on holiday, so please be patient, we will do our best to respond quickly. When contacting us by email please put BSA in the subject line when emailing Committee members as some of them have very spam-like addresses at Yahoo or Hotmail and can

inadvertently be bounced at times.

The B50 was new then and well outside of the range of an apprentices pocket, even if one could be found. So, I laboured on with the Starfire eventually changing it for an A65 after some years. The B50 was always something that I would ‘build later’, as it turned out I had to wait until 2009 to get my hands on an engine and to find a rolling chassis for it, but the years had mellowed me and I wanted the B50 as a usable roadster with less ‘farm bike’ looksand more traditional lines.

I think BSA had plans to develop the product range of the B50 but sadly greater forces were at work as we all know.

I started with removing the electrical box from the front of the engine and taking out the massive air filter unit from behind the n/s panel, this left room for the air inlet to be ductedthrough to the rear of the box under the seat where a conical air filter could be fitted. So whenthe old air box was extended outwards this made a roomy space for the electronic ignition box and the flasher relay (all nice and dry) and still room for a basic toolkit, when fitted with a rubber edge to seal against the back of the side panel it’s waterproof.

On reading Steve Parkins article about his B50 in The Star (Dec 2012) stating that he was inspired by Terry Gappers years in the BSA design office, I cannot help but think there must be a link between professional engineers and a desire to own and ride the gorgeous B50 (I was a designer in the car industry). No doubt the medics will have a pigeon hole for this condition and I think more research is definitely needed here.

When I was a lowly apprentice for old ‘Joe Lucas’ in 1971, I was riding my beloved 250cc Starfire to and from work every day, but when I travelled to the Welsh coast as I did many weekends during the year to a friends farm, I lusted after a B50 for it’s better performance and easy cruising speed.

B50 GOLD STAR SS‘Personalised’We all have our opinions about rebuilding and restoring our bikes, some of uswanting total originality, others wanting to build a special from the original. However, a lot of us want a mix of both. It‘s a good idea to make sensible modifications to build in reliability, improved safety, useability and looks butkeeping the overall package as the makers intended. Member Alan Bragg has done such a rebuild with a B50 Gold Star. Here is Alan’s story…

One of the major flaws of the OIF design is the inability to clean out the oil reservoir tubes when servicing the bike, so with this in mind I cut a hole in the top tube at the rear under the seat, I then brazed a threaded ring into the hole to take a modified fork top nut. This can be removed and with the aid of an extended 2” bottle brush all of the top oil bearing tubes can be scrubbed out (Access to the front tube is from the bottom as standard). It’s surprisingjust how much muck collects in these tubes and this mod was essential because I had welded a bracket underneath the front top tube to take the horn and the resulting oxidised skin insidehad to be removed before use.

Another useful mod is removing thedrain plug at the rear of the top tubeand fitting a plain ferrule with a feedtube to take the oil down to the engine, this meets the front oil pipeunder the engine in a tee junction, so instead of the oil being drawn from just the front down tube all of the oil supply is used. This makes a remarkable difference in the oil temperature as the large top tube can help to dissipate the heat moreeffectively.

The next weak point on the originalbikes to be addressed was the poorfront mudguard with its fragile, andprone to cracking, wire stays. This wasfixed using 1/2” diameter thick walledtube wrapped around and bolted tothe mudguard and each fork leg, it also acts as a fork brace because it’s so rigid.

That will stay put!

Lots of work done so far. We can’t wait to see the finished result in the next month’s issue. Ed

Imagine a thriving, bustling city of a quarter of a million people. In this city there are hundreds of BSA motorcycles in daily use. Stoke-on-Trent in the 1940s? Auckland in the 1950s?Wolverhampton in the 1960s? No, this is in 2012! The city that has hundreds of BSAs in dailyuse today is in Indonesia. Pematang Siantar, known as Siantar, in Sumatra, 50 miles southeastof the island’s capital Medan. BSAs are used on becak or motorized rickshaws that are not only in daily use but are earning their keep up to 70 years after they left Small Heath. There are ex-army M20s, abandoned in large numbers after the Second World War, are as well asB31s and B33s from the 1950s and 1960s.

Siantar, in the hills at 400 metres above sea level and much cooler than on the coast, was theadministrative hub for tea, rubber, cocoa and palm oil plantations in the 1900s. Hotel Siantar, built by a Swiss businessman, is still in use today with its stained glass windows, its chandeliers, billiard table, art deco lighting and rattan chairs. Dutch colonial houses can also be seen. Sumatra was occupied by the Japanese during the WWII and the Siantar hospital was used as a prison for 800 women and children in 1942.

Our friend and BSA colleague from NZ, Ashley Blair, has sent us this really interesting story about how our favourite 1950s machines are still in everyday commercial use today! Ashley writes…

Whoa, taxi or what?

BSA’s began to be used as becak in 1958 when Mbah Lanang and Soetikno, together with somefriends, began looking for a motorcycle that could be used to pull sidecars for public transporton the steep streets around Siantar. They chose BSAs because they were powerful, simple andrelatively easy to maintain and there were a number of them available. As the demand increasedmore were imported from Java. Although becak are unique to Siantar there was an attempt bythe city authorities to replace the aging BSAs and modernize the becak fleet in 2006. This wasstrongly opposed by both owners and the BSA Owners Motorcycles Siantar or BOM’S. Indonesiahas an active BSA Owners Club. Becak have now become an icon representing the city and atourist attraction in their own right. They have also been officially protected under the CulturalHeritage Law. Becak have pride of place in street parades on Tourism Day and the InternationalFestival of Youth and Sports Day. There is still concern that collectors will come from Jakarta, or even overseas, and offer large sums of money and reduce the number of becak. To preventthis happening proposals are in place to stop any being sold outside the city.

Apart from the sidecars, becak have many customized parts such as crash bars, seats and lights. In the early days when parts were difficult to get several small factories started local manufactureand parts such as carburettors from Japanese motorcycles were adapted to fit BSA’s. Now thereare a number of mechanics in Siantar who specialize in keeping the BSAs running. Prospectiveowners scour Indonesia for BSAs to build up the fleet. In the 1980s and 1990s, there werethought to be about 2,000 of the BSA becak in Siantar. Estimates of the number still in usetoday range from 400 to 1,000.

In 2008 the Betor – the becak motor community – held a parade with 175 BSAs decorated with flags, ribbons and coloured paper. This parade called Becak Hias Siantar was endorsed bythe Siantar mayor who wants to make it an annual event.

Special thanks to Luka Muhamad, Denpasar, Bali, founder of BSA Owners’ Indonesia, plus allof the photographers; Jony Chandra, Kristupa Saragi and BSA Owners’ Indonesia.

JOHN GLASSHi. My mate John Glass was a member of BSAOC. He used to trade as Duns Bike Bits then Tribsanor UK.Unfortunately, John passed away on Sunday 20th January. I just thought other members who knew him would like to be informed. Sorry to be the bearer of bad news.

Terry’s Fork ToolGood idea from Terry! However, I noticed that the socket size for the fork puller stanchion tool on page 13 of the February‘The STAR’, should be 5/8” WHIT. not A/F as shown. The Whitworth one is bigger insideand accommodates the modified top nut.

BEDS, BUCKS & NORTHANTSHQ: The Barley Mow, 7 The Stocks, Cosgrove MK19 7JD (2nd Wednesdays monthly)

A very different club night this month as when we arrived at the Barley Mow we found the pubdoors locked and the lights on but the bar deserted (a bit like the Marie Celeste!). After muchdiscussion and waiting around we adjourned to the Navigation Inn. The news from there wasthat the Landlord had left at short notice and the pub would re-open shortly. Apologies to anyonewho went to the Barley Mow after we moved on who could not find us. We chatted briefly aboutthe 2013 branch calendar and it was decided that we would have a stand at the Motor Cycleand Internal Combustion Rally at the Leighton Buzzard Narrow Gauge Railway on Sunday 29thSeptember. This will be the third year of the event and last years attendance had a substantialincrease on 2011 helped by free entry. All offers for help will be gratefully accepted.

The last Sunday ride commenced (and finished) with breakfast at the Super Sausage with sevenof us in attendance. Only one bike so no ride this month with Sara dragging me off to MiltonKeynes shopping centre (it’s my birthday soon so hopefully it was worthwhile!).

For details of the arrangements for the March Club Night please check your emails and ourwebsite, where we will give the latest news. Cheers for now.

BIRMINGHAMHQ: The Blue Bell, Warings Green Lane, Hockley Heath (2nd and last Sundays, 12pm)

Superb turnout for the second Sunday monthly meeting in January. I counted at least a dozenBSA’s in the car park although I was probably seeing double at the time. A couple of fresh newfaces made an appearance. Well, gaunt old faces on account of the bitter cold. Both lads riding in on spec after accepting an invitation from Chris O’Brien and Alan Cox to “climb aboardand follow us for a couple of hours of unbelievable pleasures and excitement”. Should chattingto us be the excitement they were after, then I’m encouraged we’ll see both these thrill seekers again. Bill on a smart Shooting Star and Alan on a nice looking B40 which almost blasted a hole in the pub wall.

Similarly, the last Sunday monthly meeting benefited from an excellent attendance, memberscoming on BSA’s and by the carload. All I had to do was mingle. Absent from branch activitiesrecently, has been Mike Osman spending some time in hospital having his own internal combustion engine seen to. Good to see Mike at this meeting, Kim and Wayne having kindlypicked him up from home enabling him to join in the chat and catch up on what’s been happening the past few weeks, i.e. nothing.

I’d expect though, he’d be buoyed up by the prospect of the branch weekend only a couple ofmonths away the thought of a couple of warm humid nights spent under canvas, the rustle of palms and the tinkle of a nearby stream. Or better still, excruciating cold night, howling gale through the prickly hedgerow and a cow relieving itself a couple of feet away. Could be either of these. Take care!

CLEVELAND & NORTH YORKSHIREHQ: Blacksmiths Arms, Preston Lane, Preston le Skerne Newton Aycliffe (Every Wednesday 8pm)

We continue to meet every Wednesday at the Blacksmith’s Arms, although nothing can be seen in the car park resembling a beeza, however we are busy organising this years jaunts. The chairman will ask, “How many fancy going to the John Bull rally this year?”, and severalmembers hands go up, in their minds they are travelling along a sun dappled tree lined avenue in Belgium, fully laden BSA’s purring away beneath them wondering if there will be any shade at the campsite from the hot sun that will beat down all weekend. Then reality will set in, someone will mention last years rally when at one point we had to pull into a lay-by as the rain was beating down so hard we couldn’t see where we were going! (And this was before we got to Hull). Well we can only book our ferry and hope. So far eight have booked for the John Bull, and after getting some good reports on the Ostende rally (I think some of the lads from Kent go to this one) several of us have booked a ferry and accommodation at the Groenedijk bikers motel although this is not until September.

At the end of last year, our branch awards where dished out Steve our chairman scooping five awards, the most used BSA, the combined age award, the best achievement on a BSA (a trip to the Shetland Isles with wife Sandra), the Dave Brown award (for most trips involving aferry crossing, the ferry to the Shetlands clinched this) and the best club run (this was to theNorth York Moors Railway at Levisham where live music and a beer tent clinched this trophy).Carol Sapsford won the ladies award and also the clubman’s award for her charity fundraising.Best BSA went to Brian and his Super Rocket. Mick won the hard luck award (his A65 breakingdown at the Septembertreffen) and I won two trophies for the best attendance at the branchand the best attendance at national events (does this mean I am keen or sad?). It was also niceto receive the Ken Jones award for mileage on a girder fork machine with fellow branch memberJohn Butterworth coming second and third was Ray Carlson all on WDM20’s. See you all around.

EAST LONDONHQ: Shackleton Scout Hall, Moreden Rd., Chadwell Heath RM6 6ED. (Fridays from 8pm)

As usual at this point in the riding year being late January early February ice and snow tends to restrict the opportunity to get out on the old rattlers that we do so love and cherish. Now and again a window of clear weather arrives and it’s off for a quick blast until totally frozen and then back home for a hot mug of tea.

Club wise, we had our Christmas jolly up with silverware awards going to Ray Trigwell and Mick Veroft, well done gentlemen!

The East London AGM has also taken place with a full committee now elected. The only change was the post of Social Secretary with Brian Harbour taking up the challenge as StevieSouthgate decided to step down.

We have managed a couple of breakfast ride outs and the usual portly stalwarts attended the gluttony. A few minor mechanical hiccups along the way, broken kickstart spring, blown fuses etc., but nothing that can’t be easily fixed.

Amazingly nobody at East London got to wear the lemon shirt which is awarded to anyone who has had a senior moment while out on a ride. I suspect fear has a major part to play here, so let’s hope for a drier 2013 and a lot more riding.

Just a quick footnote; our camping weekend will be held on the 4th, 5th, and 6th of October – please put this date in your diary,

Jones the Steam

EAST SUSSEXHQ: White Hart, Lower Horsebirdge. (1st and 3rd Wednesdays)

Wishing you all a (belated) Very Happy New Year, folks!

As I sit and write this the snow has started falling so I guess that winter has really arrived and itwill be at while yet before any of the bikes come out of the garage. Never mind, there is lots of‘fettling’, ‘polishing’ and other jobs to be done!

So what’s been happening in BSAOC East Sussex over the last couple of months?

Well, our last show of the 2012 season was the South of England ‘Real Classics’ Show at theSouth of England Showground at Ardingly. We had a very good turn out with ten BSAOC EastSussex bikes there. Steve Mold won an award for his 1969 Lightning and the club got a mention and a photo on page 56 in the December issue of Classic Bike Guide. The photo featured Steve, Angie, Jill and my ‘Goldie’, can’t be bad!

Before Christmas 25 club members enjoyed an excellent Christmas Dinner and entertainmentat the White Hart. The Christmas Dinner was followed a week later by the White Hart ChristmasDraw evening and there was a very good attendance by club members. John provided his excellent Disco and a great evening was had by all.

At the start of January 2013, the club was invited to attend and exhibit our bikes at the BritishEngineerium Museum open day in Hove. Three of us went over to Hove for a look round the museum although we went in Chris’s van, it wasn’t really biking weather! The museum consists of a restored working Victorian Steam Driven Pumping Station and other exhibits including some classic bikes and other old vehicles. We did meet up with some of the guys from the Sussex Bike Club who were obviously braver than us as they had gone on their bikes.

We also held the BSAOC East Sussex AGM at the White Hart in mid-January. There was a very good ‘turn out’ with 29 members present. The AGM was chaired by Chris and lasted about an hour with all the usual business completed and the committee for 2013 elected.

The 2013 committee comprises: Chris Chapman – Chairman, Martin Guiver – Treasurer, JohnLocke – Secretary, Geoff King – Events Organiser, together with Carolyn Bates and Brian Johnsonas committee members. Angie proposed a vote of thanks to the committee and helpers of 2012. The AGM was followed by an excellent buffet and John’s Disco. It was a very good club night, enjoyed by all.

There is a provisional list of events for 2013 on the club website at www.bsaoceastsussex.moonfruit.com/ and entry forms for some of the 2013 events are starting to ‘trickle’ through. The club’s entry for our usual spot on Madeira Drive in Brighton for the Ace Café Reunion is already booked.

Kind regards and safe biking,

Cheers, Mike

KENTHQ: Red Lion, Herne Hill. (1st and 3rd Thursdays, 8pm),

The Cock Inn, Luddesdown. (2nd and 4th Thursdays, 8pm)

This year’s festive dinner was once again held at The Plough & Harrow, Langley, Nr Maidstone.Even though the snow was falling 32 members made the journey and enjoyed a mid day

carvery, which included all the festive trimmings. It was a bit more cosy this year as the landlordhad overbooked the restaurant area which made it a bit tight for space, but we all managedto squeeze in. This years party game which is organised by Malc was an old helmet bag filledwith various small motorcycle parts and tools, this is passed around the tables, feeling throughthe bag you have to guess as many items as you could recognise and write them down onpaper, there was no overall winner but we all had a good laugh at some of the suggestions, many thanks to Malc and Jan for organising the whole event. The only run this month had to be rearranged due to bad weather conditions. A shortened direct run to Manston Museumcafé organised by Malc had four bikes turn out to find weather conditions improving and evena splash of sunshine. That’s all for now, safe riding, everyone.

NORTH WALSALL

HQ: The Anchor, Chester Rd, Brownhills. (3rd Wednesday from 7.30pm)

Hi all, this first meeting of 2013 was missed by yours truly due to unforeseen circumstances so many thanks to Karen for her feedback on the nights proceedings.

Karen writes… Albert who had but a few steps from door to door being local to our new venue made it easy, the rest of us forsaking two wheels for four arrived amid snow flurries. We (Karen, Lindsay and John) rolled up in style in John’s kitten (Reliant that is), which purred all the way through the snow.

John had a damaged fin repaired on his cylinder head but wasn’t pleased with the result soLindsay is taking it to “his man” in Willenhall for restoration. Jeff’s A65 is coming together but needs the usual crankcase refurbing to be done, Lindsay’s Arial Arrow engine is now complete, the bright work is now being sorted for chroming and the tin wear for painting, Dave’s “mate”, Martin, has stitched him up to do The Dragon Rally in North Wales with him on February 9th, last time Dave went was in 1968! Bet things have changed a bit.

Not much more bike stuff talked about but there were no embarrassing silences. That’s no surprisewith our lot, we know how to talk for England on any subject you can mention and tonight wasno exception but with Don and Lindsay trading bad jokes and the weather closing in we abandoned ship early before we were forced to arrange with our host to stay bed and breakfast.

Keep warm and upright!

(2nd Tuesday and last Thursday, 8pm)

Well, we’re now 1/6th of the way into the year! January was starting to look like a warm month and with a lack of snow on the roads it looked promising for some pre-season riding.

Festive fayre

Page 11: B50 GOLD STAR SS REBUILD WORKING BSA’s IN SUMATRA

2120

Alas, that was not to be, the rain and floods came then when that stopped the snow and thecold sneaking in from behind and struck with vengeance. The great thing is, for now at least, the salt has been washed away and we can start getting familiar with our bikes again.

For anyone feeling a little lethargic in getting their BSA back into running condition, our restoration award winner Geoff S with his B25SS should be great inspiration for everyone (it certainly has been for me).

The yearly calendar has been filled in, although there are some dates still to be confirmed then added and if there is any time left, a couple more runs too. The Thursday night meetingfor discussing the events was buzzing! It’s a great thing to see members bristling with enthusiasm and ideas of events, we even have another social evening organised for April where once again the wive’s and girlfriends (and husbands) come out and keep the biking mob on their best behaviour. The only thing we can’t organise is the weather, however, severalyears of it being poor-to-average should prompt a turn for something better, well I can be optimistic and if we can’t find good weather in this country, we have our Brittany trip to look forward to.

Runs for March will be the on the 24th to Llangollen to see our good friends Trevor and Mary on their canal barge and if our luck is in we might take a trip up the canal – brilliant!

SOUTH DERBYSHIREHQ: The Malt, Aston on Trent. (Wednesdays from 8pm)

We started off the new year with our annual New Years Day Hangover Run, which as mentionedin last months newsletter was held a short ride from Derby at the Bridge Inn at Duffield. It wasa beautiful bright day and shown below are the riders who turned out, apparently without particularly bad hangovers, being from the left Colin, Chris, Brian, Allison, Marie, Bryan, Jane,Andy, Norma and finally Ray, our Secretary. It was also noticed that everyone present was riding a BSA. We do, of course, have a small selection of those other makes within the club, but on this occasion they were notably absent. Additionally, there was quite a turnout of members in cars, who could possibly have had significantly worse hangovers than the bikebrigade. A great time was, however, had by all, and everyone left in considerably better shapethan they had arrived.

The closing event on the club’s 2012 social calendar was our annual Dinner and Dance, whichthis year took place, somewhat unconventionally, in the middle of January 2013. This was dueto booking difficulties at our new home The Malt, and was therefore held at the Long EatonGolf Club. There was a great turnout of some 50 guests, including some who had travelled considerable distances such as Knutsford in Cheshire and Mansfield in Nottinghamshire, andeven one guest with a broken wrist in plaster. A carvery style meal catered for all tastes and wasenjoyed by everyone. Music was provided for dancing after dinner and the party eventually brokeup around midnight, by which time everyone had enjoyed a very convivial evening. Many thanksshould be expressed to Ian, Ray and Geoff for organising such a successful evening.

Following on for the rest of the month were a couple of ordinary club nights, which were becoming noticeably thinner on the ground because of the bitterly cold and snowy weather. However, the last meeting of the month was a Mystery Object evening, that was highly entertaining and rounded off this months activities in fine style.

Until next month,

Alan

THAMES VALLEYHQ: The Four Horseshoes, Long Sutton. (2nd and 4th Mondays)

January was a fairly quiet month as members were either recovering from Christmas or clearingsnow and ice. The weather was perfect for Dave M as he had no excuse for not completing therefurbishment of his recently acquired A7SS. I went to see the results last weekend and the newtank, paint job and other improvements really finish off what was a pretty good buy. The mainbranch event was our 2012 AGM at which I handed over the mantle of Secretary to Ian Clare. The AGM reflected the general success of the branch in that 22 members braved the badweather to attend (mind you, the thought of missing free chips may have had something to do with it). The branch continues to attract new members and it was felt that there was no need to change the way we are organised and operate. Bob M has already produced a fairly comprehensive schedule for 2013 ride outs and events, let’s hope that we have have betterweather this year.

WARRINGTONHQ: The Antrobus Arms, Antrobus, Cheshire. (Thursdays at 8pm)

Well another great gathering; all for charity on a windy, snowy January night! Yes it was our annual St Roccos auction and raffle.

Our chairman took pride ofplace as the auctioneer andpersuaded the gathering topart with well earned cash, selling everything from crashhelmet to A10 number plateholder inner tubes and loadsof other very useless, sorry, useful bits. The raffle endedup with a vast amount ofprizes almost enough forevery one there. The roomwas full and a very enjoyableand light-hearted evening was enjoyed by all who eventually contributed £180 for the charity, to be added to past event collection to be presented later in the year. A very big thank you to all who attended especially members from other branches. Well done!

WEST SUSSEXHQ: Broadbridge Heath Village Centre, Wickhurst Lane,

Broadbridge Heath, Horsham. (2nd Thursday)

So, onto another year which, if the provisional calendar is to be believed, will be even busier than the last. There is no doubt that far from motorcycling, certainly at classic level, being apariah we seem to be more in demand for shows, fetes and all manner of local gatherings.

Our first meeting, held in the most gloomy of evenings, had what may have been our best attendance yet, and several members riding in on their pride and joy. Steve returned from New Zealand with tales of the racing out there, Pete re-appeared after a few meetings absenceperhaps to show off his new Triumph, scrambler style, but promising that he still has his A65.

An early invitation to attend the Engineerium in Brighton proved to be just a little too early andat very short notice, so that I went with other colleagues for what proved to be a very interestingday. The ‘Jampot’ club were there as well as a selection of vintage cars complementing the bikesand adding to the overall interest. What is more, the weather proved to be kind and whilst theearly morning ride was misty the ride home was made in bright sunshine.

Now looking forward to the first of the Kempton Park autojumbles followed by the annual observing role at the Talmag Trial. I was unfortunately laid low by one of the many winter ‘bugs’,so nothing to report as I wallowed in self sympathy… roll on next month and the Pet Food run.

Malcom

WEST YORKSHIREHQ: Shoulder of Mutton, Methley Rd, Castleford. (Every Thursday, 8.30pm)

I hope the recent weather didn’t hinder your fettlin’ endeavour’s. We have many members’ projects on the go at the moment including Alan’s B40 trike. Apparently a quad bike rear endis to be grafted onto the B40 frame. I’m sure this will prove to be an exceptional modification,as his good lady, Kath, will be the main rider of this. In the same fettlin’ shed as Alan’s areRoger’s A65 plus A65asaki (yes, it’s a Beezer but not as we know it), I’m sure more of this will be revealed as time goes on. Our Bob is busy too working to complete Anita’s A10 and dare I say it, a bike born in Cleckheaton… again, more to follow!

At time of writing, we have finally arranged the venue for our camp on the 12th–14th July. It is to be as last year, the Burghwallis Pub, Scorcher Hills Lane, Burghwallis near Doncaster,DN6 0HQ. Costs for camping will be £5.00 per tent per night with a breakfast laid on at reasonable cost for anyone who doesn’t feel like cooking. Last year’s event although a dampaffair proved to be enjoyable by all attendees and I’m sure this year will be just as ‘lively’. Anyway folks, that’s all for now…

Ian aka Frank

WYRE FORESTHQ: The Blount Arms, Nr. Cleobury Mortimer.

(Tuesday weekly 8pm – ride outs in Summer expt. 1st Tuesday)

Happy New Year to you all from deep in the Wyre Forest. In 2012 we had a few breakdowns onour weekly evening runs, so I’m hoping everyone is getting on with their winter maintenanceprogrammes. Two breakdowns which resulted in total rebuilds were Keith’s T90 which dumpedall of its oil over the Queens Highway and a very large pool outside our HQ, The Blount Arms,tut-tut! Turned out to be a sliver of aluminium jammed in the scavenger oil valve resulting in oil not returning to the tank. So make sure your Sump Filter Gauze is in good condition, this onehad a rip in it allowing the sliver to get through. Then there was the A10 belonging to Moss. That locked up when trying to start it up. That turned out to be a bolt in the crankshaft flywheel which was winding itself out into the crankcases. He was very lucky that the resultinggroove wasn’t too deep, but the bolt had a nice shiny head though!

The first meeting back in the new year, we have a new member, so welcome Jeff Stelling from Worcester. Jeff has come back to motorcycling after a 40 year lay off and bought himselfa 1971 Lightning. Lastly, we wish Moss all the very best for his forthcoming operation.
