Not everyone has been lazy. Twenty-two youth and five chaperones from Zion recently returned from a mission trip in Iowa and shared adventurous stories and testimonies Sunday night. Each one did an awesome job sharing, but Jackie Barnes’ name kept coming up as the one getting in the most trouble. Jimmy and I took grandson Jacob (Jason’s) to visit the Raineys in Franklin over the weekend, but we did get back to hear about the trip. While in Franklin we traveled to the Agri- Center to pet, feed, and milk goats. There was also face painting and soap making as well as some music being performed. Jacob and Lyla had a blast! We brought Lyla home with us Sunday and swapped Jacob for his sister Lillie. There is nothing like having two three-year-old granddaughters overnight. On the way home we stopped in Jackson to visit our other granddaughter Alivia. We kept her one night for Justin and Britany to enjoy an overnight trip to Six Flags in St. Louis. It seems like she is growing by leaps and bounds! Anyway, we shared pictures from the trip and picked up dog food that Justin had gotten for us Saturday. Scott, Janet, and Zachary Tinsley stopped by for a brief visit Sunday night after church. We just happened to be in the yard while they were riding in their Jeep. They had been out helping Jessie Austin remove dead fish from his pond and over to visit with Mark Johnson and his family. Janet told me that Bret Baggett had a tonsillectomy earlier in the week. I hope you’re feeling better Bret and getting ready for school in a few more weeks. Scottie Morris reported twenty-one attending the community prayer breakfast Thursday morning with Brother Grover Westover leading the devotion. They continued with the Beatitudes study. Thanks guys for gathering every Thursday morning to pray for various requests. Mama (Alice Elrod) babysat four of her great grandchildren Thursday while Chris Austin had oral surgery. One wisdom tooth per child was removed and he is still having a tough time. I hope you are feeling better by now Chris and back at work. Norma Austin attended the “Song Fest” in Jackson Friday and Saturday night and enjoyed every minute of it. She loves those old “Southern Gospel” singings. But, then she loves the new as well. We got our first cantaloupe this week and it was delicious. We also canned tomatoes, but not from our garden. Now, I am looking for some peas and green beans before school starts. Jimmy loves those fresh vegetables! Pray for those who are sick, our military personnel and their families, the shut- ins, those who have lost loved ones, and the leaders of our country. Call me at 772-4257 if you have news. People want to know! “No trap is so strong that God cannot free us from it.” This is our Thought for the Week as published in the Upper Room devotional by Norma Newton of Oklahoma. There are times in all of our lives where we feel there is no light at the end of the tunnel or no sign of hope. By trusting God, praying, and reading the Bible, we can find hope that doors will open, healing will come, and our hearts and minds will be changed. During those times if we listen God will remind us that there is a light at the end of the tunnel and there is hope. That is why He sent His Son, Jesus to set us free. Following church services at Mt. Pleasant, on Sunday, July 11, Travis and I stayed for the annual church-wide picnic. There was lots of good food and great fellowship had by all who attended. It was too hot to picnic outside under the pavilion so it was moved into the fellowship hall and everyone enjoyed the indoor picnic. It was such a blessing to see Jordan and Carol Bruce enjoying themselves at the picnic. There will be a Spaghetti Supper at the South Hatchie Fire Department on Friday, July 23 rd beginning at 5:00 p.m. All proceeds benefit the South Hatchie Fire Department. For more information or to make a donation, please contact Nancy Hendrix at 772-0966. Phillip and Aleta Bradford would like to wish a Happy Anniversary to Mr. and Mrs. Wendell Bradford. They will celebrate 50 years of marriage on July 28. Also we would like to say Happy Anniversary to Jerry and Peggy Lewis as they celebrated 54 years of togetherness on Monday, July 19. To both of these couples, as you celebrate your special day, may your memories bless you in a special way. Happy Birthday celebrations this week include Gracie Sills, Deanna Fox, Bro. Butch Westover, Kelly Dumas, Brian King, Martha Finger, Betty Edwards, James Watson, Kacy Hendrix and Lou Cheatham. Please keep the family of Robert Burns in your thoughts and prayers. Robert fought a long hard battle and succumbed to cancer on Friday, July 16. He is survived by his mother, Shirley Burns, his brothers, Ricky, Eston and Jerry Burns, his sister, Diane Evans and her husband Thomas and other family members. We would like to extend sympathy to the families of Mrs. Febbie Jones, Mrs. Angela Swain, Mr. John Johnson, Mrs. Eleanor Hendrix, Mr. Daniel Waldon and Mrs. Carolyn Bell. Prayer requests this week include Robert Banks, Dorothy Martin, Paul Lewis, Geneva Littlejohn, Wilma Campbell, Doug Jones, Rita Elrod, Paul Lewis, Kayleigh and Andrew Williams, Dennis Watson, Bobby Cannon, Fletcher Lewis, Danny Hayes, Carol and Jordan Bruce, Carsen Cannon, Dustin Milton, Enid Powell, Shirley Morgan, Stephanie Whittiemore, Darlene Rossen, Earline Benard, Peggy Lewis, Lillie Goodman, Carol Wilson, Bro. Claudie Hammers, James Glover, Leah Scallions, Frances Elrod, Kirk Bouillion, the Nation, the Military and our Community. Until next week-God Bless. Why is it that at class reunions you feel younger than everyone else looks? Bill, Lorie and Sarah White were with Jimmy and Beverly White July 9 to celebrate Jimmy’s 89th birthday. Happy Birthday, Jimmy! The 184th Kinfolks Camp Meeting is in full swing, in spite of the hot weather and the church sanctuary has been filled every night. Sunday, the brass bell which was donated last year has found a permanent home in a 16-foot bell tower front of the church built by Johnny Johnson in memory of his wife, Lori, who died of cancer in June 2006. It was decided that the bell would only be rung following the annual memorial service in memory of family members who died that year or in case of fire on the campground. Dr. Leonard Sweet is back in the Tabernacle pulpit this year, fresh from speaking engagements around the world. Voted among the 50 Most Influential Christian Leaders in America, Sweet first came to Camp Meeting in 1991, and returned in 1994 and 1997, and now he’s back again for a week of worship and inspiration, and the church is packed for every service for him. Saturday night, John Thornton Camp was lit up with twinkling white lights as they honored newlyweds, Matthew and Christina Thornton Hansley with a wedding reception for the entire campground. Their wedding pictures lined the walls of the camp house dining area for all to enjoy. Christina is the granddaughter of Dr. John Thornton, Jr. and Lorraine Thornton, and the daughter of Claiborne and Lana Thornton of Nashville. Mary Ann Carlton has enjoyed time at the campground, wheeled around by her son, Richard, visiting the camp houses and seeing friends. Mary Ann has had health issues for some time, but is doing better now. Jay Kendrick is recovering from rotator cuff surgery, and his wife, Libby Harmon Kendrick is retiring in August after working 30 years for the state of Tennessee. Dede Harmon Kendrick welcomed her husband, Kenny, home in March after a year in Iraq with Tenn. National Guard. They have a son, Will, 4, and a daughter, Carol, 2. The Coppedge-Price- Winslow Camp has been full to overflowing, as the family members have come from several states to be together there. Their patriarch, Frank Coppedge, of Merritt Island, FL was unable to be with them this year and was greatly missed. Lyde Davis Hamilton fell while in Memphis for Christmas and spent five months convalescing from several cracked ribs. She has moved into the Sugar Creek Retirement Community and is happy there and doing well. She is spending the week at Tabernacle campground with her family. The Haywood High School classes of 1969, 70 and 71 had a class reunion at the Brownsville Country Club last Saturday night and it was well attended. Nancy Littlejohn and Beth Wallace enjoyed Saturday in Memphis visiting Jennifer and Chris McCage of Cordova then visiting all the new exhibits at the Memphis Zoo. It had been several years since Nancy and Beth had been there and they said the Treton Trek was beautiful. We are so saddened by the accidental and untimely death of John O. Johnson. Services were held at Brownsville Baptist Church Monday with the burial at Tabernacle Cemetery. He is survived by his wife, Linda, and four children and their families. He will certainly be missed. Prayers this week for Jimmy Coulston and Welch Hopkins. Our lovely little girl has still not been guessed. Another clue is that she lost her husband, who was very well known and loved, in 1983. Call 772.1192 to guess. Please email your news to [email protected].
