DANCER CASE STUDY/EXAMPLE: AL/IC/EX DONAGHY

A London-based artist and performer, studying in Tokyo workshops started by the modern mas-ter of butoh and longtime Issey Miyake collaborator Kazuo Ohno, now continued by his son, Donaghy’s work is unchoreographed responses to objects and environments through the lens of butoh’s core concepts – stripped of the visual and theatrics usually associated with the craft.

Working in an improvised manner, they use words and objects as stimulus for body responses with the aim of opening up hidden or unknown qualities to themself or the viewer.

Kazuo Ohno’s collaboratiion with Issey Miyake encouraged performers to engage with the history of fashion and costume design, but not to be pre-cious about it, instead finding importance in the use of clothing rather than its position as a relic – something that aligns closely with the Strut ethos.

BUTOH / VIDEOInspired by Ohno’s collaboration with Issey Miyake, and the above-mentioned approach this took to the relationship between [Japanese] design and the body, this project would workshop a dance perfor-mance inspired by, and working with, pieces from the archive.

An edit of by Japanese designers would feature, wide monu-mental shots showcasing the garments’ structure and close-ups revealing detail – but overall presenting a vision of the piec-es in use and action in an environment of real life and high culture.
