Greetings from Our Regent Wow, just — WOW. It’s a whole new world out there. I’m a big Stephen King

fan and one of my favorites was The Stand. Never planned on living it though. In the book, after a deadly influenza type virus accidentally gets out and wipes out most of the world, survivors are split, the “good” going to Boulder, CO (not sure why he picked Boulder) and the evil going to Las Vegas (that’s a no brainer to under-stand). There are so many lessons to be learned from this pan-demic/plague: there are consequences to every action; who and what are really important; our actions do matter and affect everyone, not just ourselves; how much man-kind is capable of if they work together; and how many good people there are out there. Circle of Love

Spirituality I wanted to start the Lenten season on the right foot, so I signed up for the “Women’s Lenten Retreat” with Sr. Eileen Carmody as the guest speaker. Who could have ever guessed that this would be the fi-nal meeting of the CDA Court St. Ann, Mother of Mary #2419, for an un-known length of time. Sadly, the coronavirus prevented the sacred rituals performed that enrich the Lenten season. Thankfully, the good Sister’s re-flections have become the mortar I need to keep Christ by my side through-out this terrible time in history. The pandemic and Lent at first seemed to be strange bedfellows, but using Sister’s analogy of Lent they coexist nice-ly to demonstrate God’s love for us. Sister Eileen began the retreat with a stone. The stone represents the things that block us from being what God wants us to be. During Lent, Sister advises us to reflect on four major questions that aid us to change our hearts and makes us healthy and strong in Christ: I. Can you roll away the stone? II. Can you drink from the cup that I must drink? III. Do you know what I have done for you? IV. Do you love me? We are challenged to remove the stones that block us from truly loving God. Offer our cries of weakness to God and trust that He will change it into service to others. God desires us to be our best selves. Give to others totally out of love. One must die to themselves for others. These are com-plicated answers in all their simplicity. Sr. Eileen did a wonderful job of pointing out the questions of Lent. I still have my stone. I hope to keep it as a reminder of the profound lessons taught to me during the “Woman’s Lenten Retreat.” Submitted by: Patricia Cooney

Tribute To Rayola McLaughlin Past National Regent and Centenarian” Submitted by: Helene Shepard On March 20, 2020 Rayola added the new title “centenarian” to her long list of accomplishments. Rayola participated in and served Catholic Daughters from her 18th birthday to the present in Court Madonna #114 in Port Jervis, New York. She held positions on all three levels: Local, State and National, of the organization. After she served on the state level in the 60’s and 70’s she was elected National Regent in Philadelphia and served from 1986 to 1990. Dur-ing this time, and later, she was honored with many awards presented in person by Popes, Bishops, and even President George W. Bush. She is presently a Lady of the Holy Sepul-cher. When she had been able to attend CDA Masses and, if requested, you would see Rayola in the black cape with the insignia of the Holy Sepulcher as a symbol or her station. Rayola has always remained a role model for all women in the Church and her community. She was devoted to St. Mary’s Church in Port Jervis where she was Baptized and received all her sacraments and was a Lector and Extraordi-nary Minister of the Eucharist. I am happy to say Rayola has been my mentor for the past 40 years. To quote Rayola when recently asked about her life she simply said that her life has been a good one. “Faith has al-ways been so important in my life, and it will always be.” Unfortunately, due to the Coronavirus we were not able to visit with Rayola on her special day. We look forward to the day when we can celebrate with her. Happy 100th Birthday Rayola. CDA loves you! God bless you. If you would like to send Rayola a card her address is: Belle Reve Senior Living 404 E. Harford Street Milford, PA 18337

Rosary Update From: Margaret Healey

The director of activities at Valley View Nursing Home, Mark LaBruna, has extended his heartfelt apologies for the way our CDA Rosary Volunteers have been treated this past year. That one young lady who caused all the trouble is no longer volunteering and will not be impeding on our ministry in the future. The activities staff was also scolded for not tak-ing charge of the volunteer by guiding her correctly. He re-minded them that CDA has been saying the Rosary here, faithfully, for over 50 years and was appalled that on young student doing community service was given free reign on Sundays. He was very upset when I told him that almost all of our current CDA volunteers will not be signing up for an-other year of Rosary, myself included, so we will be discon-tinuing this ministry until we can get enough volunteers to replace them. Most of us have been doing this for 23 years. It is time for our younger members to take their place. Mr. LaBruna suggested that we just come to say the Ro-sary on the 3rd Sunday of each month. How about it ladies? Surely we can do this. I will continue to make the schedule and keep it running. We would do all 3 activity rooms at 10:30 am. So we would need a minimum of 3 volunteers. So if we get 9 volunteers then you would just have to go once every 3 months. Twelve volunteers and it once every 4 months. That’s really not a lot to ask. New volunteers will be accompanied by a seasoned volunteer temporarily until you got it down. Please consider signing up for this worthwhile ministry. We can’t let Our Blessed Mother down. We will discuss it as part of the agenda the next time we meet so please give it some thought, especially our newest members. It is a feel good ministry, rich in grace, bringing God’s love to His most often forgotten ones. If you can’t go to the next meeting but want to sign up, call me at 845-988-7891. Sincerely, Margaret Healey

In Memoriam We extend our deepest sympathies to the family of Maureen Bowes who passed away on Thursday, April 2, 2020. She was a wonderful example of a Catholic Daughter. May she rest in peace.

Kids in Church

Written by an 8-year-old named Danny, who lives in Chula Vista, CA for his third grade homework assignment to explain God:

Explanation of God: “One of God’s main jobs is making people. He makes them to replace the ones that die, so there will be enough people to take care of things on Earth. He doesn’t make grownups, just babies, I think because they are smaller and easier to make. That way he doesn’t have to take up his valuable time teaching them to talk and walk. He can just leave that to mothers and fathers. God’s second most important job is listening to prayers. An awful lot of this goes on, since some people, like preachers and things pray at times beside bedtime. God doesn’t have time to listen to the radio or TV because of this. Because he hears eve-rything, there must be a terrible lot of noise in his ears, unless he has thought of a way to turn it off. God sees everything and hears everything and is everywhere which keeps Him pretty busy. So you shouldn’t go wasting his time by going over your mom and dad’s head asking for some-thing they said you couldn’t have. Atheists are people who don’t believe in God. I don’t think there are any in Chula Vista. At least there aren’t any who come to our church. Jesus is God’s Son. He used to do all the hard work, like walking on water and performing miracles and trying to teach the people who didn’t want to learn about God. They finally got tired of him preaching to them and they crucified him. But he was good and kind, like his father, and he told his father that they didn’t know what they were doing and to for-give them and God said okay. His dad (God) appreciated everything that he had done and all his hard work on earth so he told him he didn’t have to go out on the road anymore. He could stay in heaven. So he did. And now he helps his dad out by listening to prayers and seeing things which are important for God to take care of and which ones he can take care of himself without having to bother God. Like a secretary, only more important. You can pray anytime you want and they are sure to help you because they got it worked out so one of them is on duty all the time. You should always go to church on Sunday because it makes God happy, and if there’s anybody you want to make happy, it’s God! Don’t skip church to do something you thing will be more fun like going to the beach. This is wrong. And besides, the sun doesn’t come out at the beach until noon, any-way. If you don’t believe in God, besides being an atheist, you will be very lonely, because your parents can’t go everywhere with you, like to camp, but God can. It is good to know He’s around you when you’re scared, in the dark or when you can’t swim and you get thrown into real deep water by big kids. But you shouldn’t just always think of what God can do for you. I figure God put me here and he can take me back any time he pleases. And that’s why I believe in God.”

Local Court Election

Local court elections always coincide with the National Convention. Gail Erickson will be com-pleting her second term as our Regent and will be retiring. Our Nominating Committee members are: Karen Sheboy, Linda Jurain, Helene Shepard, Janet Allen, & Lynn Eismont. They will be meet-ing either by phone or conference call to select the officers for the term 2020—2022.

Classic Shortbread

Ingredients: 3 sticks unsalted butter, at room temp.

3 cups all-purpose flour 6 tablespoons cornstarch 1/4 tsp, fine salt

3/4 sup granulated sugar Directions: 1. Put oven rack in the center of oven and

preheat to 325 F. Butter a 9X12 1/2 jelly roll pan and line it with parchment, then butter the paper. 2. Whisk together the flour, cornstarch and

salt in a bowl. Beat the butter and sugar with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, 5 to 7 min. Slowly add the flour mixture and

beat on low until the dough is just combined. 3. Transfer the dough to the prepared pan, spreading it out as evenly as possible with a spatula.

Cover with plastic wrap, then use your hands to press and flatten into a smooth even layer. Remove the plastic and cut the dough with a sharp knife in

appox. 1 X 3” bars. Use a fork to prick a decorative pattern into the tops. 4. Bake, rotating the pan from front to back halfway through, until golden, 60-70 minutes. Let

stand for 5 minutes in the pan, then re-cut the bars along the previous cuts. Carefully lift the bars off the parchment with a small spatula and transfer them

to a wire rack to cool completely. Store in an air-tight container for up to 5 days (can be frozen).
