As a young boy I would ride my bicycle to the Brechbuhler Scales shop, where my father Clyde would put me to work sweeping floors and cleaning. I remember receiving a raise once from 50 cents to 60 cents an hour and I thought I was rich earning a penny a minute!Having grown up around the scale service industry, I experienced the expansion of Brechbuhler Scales from servicing scales to selling new equipment of many of the major manufacturers. In the 1980/1990’s the company was being influenced by the outside manufacturers on what and

where to sell. Unlike most manufacturers, starting as a service company gave us the insight on how customers wanted to be treated. With the equipment quality leaving something to be desired, and dictatorship of the manufacturers unappreciated, Brechbuhler Scales, out of necessity, established B-TEK Scales, a sister company to manufacture for them. This was designed to provide Brechbuhler Scales’ customers with the products and quality they deserved. If what we have accomplished over the past 15 plus years of B-TEK Scales’ existence is any indication

of what the future holds, we are in for a great time. I do not see our growth changing. The products and technology will advance, but they will not be a substitute for the heart and soul of the business and all of the people involved with it. I will remain active in the company and still enjoy delivering scales. Outside of that I find enjoyment in yard work.

Oiltanking is a world wide oil and chemical storage and distribution company. The Oiltanking Joliet terminal located in Channahon, IL receives stores and distributes specialty chemicals via rail cars, tanker trucks and barges. Located on the Illinois Waterway System and major Interstate Highways, they are

at the Oiltanking Joliet facility for more than 15 years. Making the decision to replace some or all of the scales brought certain challenges. All seven of the existing scales were located under a roof to protect the extensive piping and filling systems. Maintaining the existing scale height was a major consideration. Utilizing the existing scale slope and shallow containment pit foundation and minimum down time for removal and replacement was also a top priority for Oiltanking Joliet. The project time line required that a 100’ custom built scale be consecutively delivered and installed every two weeks.

Tri State Scale System’s Randy Bezanson was relied upon for guidance recommendations due to his long history and knowledge of the existing scale load-out area. The site foundation evaluation began with Jeff Wood of Wood and Son Construction.

Oiltanking Joliet sought out competitive bids for the project with B-TEK being one of their prospects. From the start, B-TEK was able to provide a viable retrofit truck scale with the Duratron concrete deck. The Duratron was able to meet the existing shallow pit end-wall height and could be built to match the existing piers in the sloped foundation. When Oiltanking Joliet learned that the new scales needed to be installed level without a slope, the scale profile dimension became critical because of the existing fixed overhead structure. With that change, B-TEK and Tri State Scale decided to offer the Centurion-AT-CD. The Centurion had the lowest profile

dimension compared with the competing scale manufacturers, offered a more robust design, greater concentrated load capacity, and maintains the ability tocustomize as needed. The Centurion-AT concrete deck was quoted with width slightly under 11’ with custom heavy-duty square tube guide rails mounted on top of the platform and manholes. Being an extremely large and important project for Oiltanking Joliet, the project engineer wanted to visit B-TEK and the other two competitors scale manufacturing facilities. The visit allowed B-TEK to really showcase the unique features of the Centurion truck scale and how very well built it is. B-TEK Scales was favored with the award in late April. The first new scale was installed successfully in June with the install process repeated every two weeks until completion in early October.

I got started in the scale business approx. 30 years ago by doing sub-contract work for the company. My Dad (Ray) and I provided concrete foundations and installed scales. Some as far away as Louisiana. Eventually we ended up with Dad, myself and another employee Chuck Porter, buying out the company. Chuck Porter retired several years back and still works with us on a part time basis. Dad runs the field operations while I run the business and sales. The company started in 1972. We took control in 1982.

The company’s strength’s are the employees. We have the very best group of professional people dedicated to always doing their best to get the job done right the first time. Our company has always had a great reputation for service. We pride ourselves in fast response time for service calls. We carry a large stock of parts so that we can fix the scales on the first service call. Multiple test trucks to get the scales back in calibration as they are serviced.

Our most challenging project was one where we installed four B-TEK Centurion truck scales for one of our County landfills. We could only install one scale at the time. Scheduling was difficult. Working around the traffic flow as we removed the existing scales and modified the foundation for the new scales. Every time we removed a scale or installed a new one we had to block traffic with the crane. We worked closely with the customer and at the end of the project we were told that we had been the best contractor they had ever worked with. This is the relationship we strive for. The relationship that we have with B-TEK has really been the best decision I have ever made. We have great factory support and with sales support from Jim Kavouras our factory representative. Our truck scale sales grew from a few a year to installs on a pretty constant basis. We looked for this type equipment and relationship for many years. With B-TEK we found what we were missing. The digital truck scales have been the best product we have had the opportunityto sell. It tops all of the competition. Our tech’s are really spoiled to the digital technology. They prefer that I would never sell analog truck scales again.

I think there’s really nothing unique about me. I give God all the credit for any successes that I’ve had in business and my life. I prayed over each person that I’ve ever hired and look at the great people that we have.

“The Clyde B. Brechbuhler Stadium” was made possible by the abundant donation of the Brechbuhler family. Clyde has done so much for the youth of Canton Local School district by making it possible to construct the track, which without his effortsthe stadium would not have been made possible. Clyde has an amazing service heart and continues to contribute to the community.
