1CONSUMER PERCEPTION OF PEOPLE TOWARDS SURAT CITY BUS

    Executive summary...

In the present business environment it is very difficult for any

business to survive. For survival every business unit has to differentiate it from

others and to give certain benefits to its customers and satisfied the need of

customers to keep doing business in long run.

In todays fast age, every person is always in hurry and it is not

possible for every person to travel in own vehicle, so there is a strong need of good

transportation service provider. Still today majority of the people travels by using

public transportation like bus, train, air, etc. I do this research repor t on SURAT CITY

BUS, Barmecha, Sun & Mahindra Travels with the objective that to studyconsumer perception of people towards surat city bus . The person as

passenger wants many facilities during travel like speed of vehicle, fair rate,

cleanliness, behavior of staff, comfortable sits, etc.

My research report consists of mainly 8 chapters along with

    Bibliography and Annexure.

The first part consists of executive summary that explain in brief

the entire preparation of the research done during the two month of the projectperiod.

evolution of public transportation, ways of transportation, etc.

public transportation investment also declined during much of that period because of

the need for funds in the rest of the economy. As a consequence, by the early 80s

the transportation system in India was barely meeting the needs of the nation or

    preparing for future economic growth.

Many roads, for example, were breaking up because of overuse and

lack of maintenance; railroads required new track and rolling stock. Ports needed

equipment and facilities, particularly for bulk and container cargo; and at many

airports the national civil airlines needed supporting equipment, including provision

for instrument landings. The government planned to devote percent of the Eighth

Five Year Plan 2 budget to transportation and communications, up from the

percent devoted to the sector during the seventh plan.

Although there is a large private sector involvement in transportation

in India, the government plays a large regulatory and developmental role. The

central government has ministries to handle civil aviation, railroads, and surface

transportation. Counterpart agencies are found at the state and union territory level.

Critical to improving the entire transportation sector in the late 0s is the ability of

the sector to adjust to the central government s national reform initiatives, including

privatization, deregulation, and reduced subsidies. The sector must also adjust to

foreign trade expansion, demographic pressures and increasing urbanization, technological change and obsolescence, energy availabi lity, and environmental and

    public safety concerns.

Currently the passenger demand in the country is estimated at 000

billion passenger kms BPK/year . The elasticity of transport demand to P has

been assessed to be more than .2 % in case of passenger traffic by the World

Bank. Further almost 0% of the demand for passenger transport service is met by

    the road transport sector.

    WHATIS MEAN BY PERCEPTION?

Perception is the process, by which an individual

selects, organizes and interprets information inputs to create a meaningful

picture of the world around as.

In psychology and the cognitive sciences, perception is

the process of acquiring, interpreting, selecting, and organizing sensory information.

Methods of studying perception range from essentially biological or physiological

approaches, through psychological approaches to the often abstract through

    experiments of mental philosophy.

HISTORY OF THE STUDY OF PERCEPTION:

Perception is one of the oldest fields within scientific

psychology, and there are correspondingly many theories about its underlyingprocesses. The oldest quantitative law in psychology is the Weber fetcher law,

which quantifies the relationship between the intens ity of physical stimuli and their

perceptual effects. It was the study of perception that gave rise to the gestalt school

of psychology, with its emphasis on holistic a Perception and reality approaches.

    PERCEPTION AND REALITY:

Many cognitive psychologist hold that, as we move about

in the world, we create a model of how the world works. That is, we sense the

objective world, but our sensations map to percepts, and these perceptions are

provisional, in the same sense that scientific hypotheses are provisional. As weacquire new information, ourpercepts shifts. Abrahiam pais biography refers to the

asemplastic nature of imagination. In the case of visual perception, some people

can actually see the percept shift in their minds eye. thers, who are not pictures

thinkers, may not necessarily perceive the shape shifting as their world changes.

The asemplastic nature has been shown by experiment: an ambiguous image has

multiple interpretations on the perceptual level. ust as one object can give rise to

multiple percepts, so an object may fail to give rise to any percept at all: if the

percept has no grounding in a persons experience, the person may literally not

    perceive it.

    MEANING:

Perceptions vary from person to person. ifferent people

perceive different things about the same situation. But more than that, we assign

different meanings to what we perceive. And the meanings might change for a

certain person. ne might change one s perspective or simply make things mean

    something else.

    the stimulus; such activities of the sense organs as effects of preceding stimulation;

the subject s past experience; attention factors such as readiness to respond to a

stimulus; and motivation and emotional state of the subject. Stimulus elements in

visual organization form perceived patterns according to their nearness to e ach

other, their similarity, the tendency for the subject to perceive complete figures, and

the ability of the subject to distinguish important figures from background.

Perceptual constancy is the tendency of a subject to interpret

one object in the same manner, regardless of such variations as distance, angle of

sight, or brightness. Through selective attention, the subject focuses on a limited

number of stimuli, and ignores those that are considered less important. epth

perception, considered to be innate in most animals, is produced by a variety of

visual cues indicating perspective, and by a slight disparity in the images of an

object on the two retinas. An absolute threshold is the minimal physical intensity of a

stimulus that a subject can normally perceive, whereas a difference threshold is the

minimal amount of change in a stimulus that can be consciously detected by the

subject. Recent studies have shown that stimuli are actually perceived in the brain,

while sensory organs merely gather the signals. William obelle s research, for

instance, has offered significant hope for the blind.

satisfaction in my project report. At this stage the researcher build some idea about

sampling methods, source of data and method of data collection.

I have also used exploratory research design to some extent in the

beginning of my study. In this project the secondary and primary data are used in the

research design in my project is appropriate.

    3. Determining the source of data:

For preparing any report we need the data as raw material, we can get

it either from primary or from secondary sources or it can be from both source. There

can be two main classifications of data sources

    Primary data

    Secondary data

I used primary data as well as secondary data at some extent. In my

project, I used primary data as a major source of information primary data as a major

source of information. Primary data was collected through survey with the help of

questionnaire as a research instrument, which provided very rich insight about the

research objective, Perception of people Surat City Bus.

I have also used the secondary data for initial study informa tion

about the type of bus, facilities in bus, different statistics, industry and company

detail, etc. were collected through secondary data from magazine, websites and

    newspaper.

    4. Designing data collection form:

To know Perception of people in the behalf of Surat City Bus. I

have to contact the passenger who traveled through City bus. I have to continence

them to co-operate and give their opinion. For this purpose I used the personal

survey method, in which I went to bus station and collect data. The benefit of this

    method for me was:

I was able to clarify any kind of doubts and queries immediately.

I immediately solved the problem of language and questions.

Because of using this method, there would be 100% accuracy.

The wastage of questionnaire was very less.

To collect their opinion I decided to collect the data by using

Questionnaire which is easy and convenient way to collect data. When preparing

questionnaire, the wording of question; number of questions, sequence of question

and type of questions would be followed.

    About questionnaire:

There are total 13 question in one questionnaire.

I used the dichotomous or two choice questions, closed question, and open -

    ended question.

The wording of questionnaire is easy to understand. I also printed the

    questionnaire in ujarati language.

    5. Determining the sampling decision:

It is not possible for me to meet all passengers and collect their

opinion. Because of time and financial limit I decided to go for sample survey to

    overcome that problem.

For this research the sample unit was the passenger who came

to Surat Central bus station for getting the bus.

The population is all passengers who traveled by CITY BUS. it is

very difficult to decide the size of population. It was a very large population, I was not

able to meet all of them, and so I decided to collect data from those passengers who

came to Surat Central Bus Station.

I took sample of 200 units from entire population. it was so small

as compare to population but because of said limitation I had to select the sample of

    200 passenger.

When preparing a questionnaire in systematic form the field

survey process is start by using the personal survey methods. The time period for

    field work was very less.

    7. Editing andTabulation of data:

The collected data are needs to be checked whether it fill

properly or not. This activity was done by me on the day when I fill up the

questionnaire from the respondent. I removed some improper filled questionnaire,

there was need to edit some questionnai re.

After editing, the next step was to count the frequency of

responses for each of the questions in all the questionnaires. The frequency was the

tabulating in proper format. I tabulate all the data. Tabulation means c ount the

number of frequency of answer getting by respondent. The tabulated data was used

    for analyzing.

    8. Processing and analyzing the collecteddata:

After the ending of field survey and tabulation, the next step

is processing and analyzing the collected data. For analysis of data, I used the

percentage method of analysis. Tables and graphs were used to present the

complied data. After tables and graphs, finding and analysis follows which are

shown in chapter of finding and analysis.

    ::Limitation::

uring survey, some respondents answered to question seriously but there

are chances that some respondents have answered without seriousness.

Thus to extent result of finding may vary.

Some of the respondents were not willing to give their suggestion. They are

    all not interested.

To prepare such kind of project time limit and money are biggest problem to

over come, as the time allocated is very short.

I could not find any project similar to my project so, I found difficulties in

    finding relevant information.

I could not find any more relevant information from newspaper, magazines,

    ::Conclusion::

From the finding showed in previous chapter, I conclude following thing:

In transportation industry, passenger or customer can satisfy by good services and

facilities. By getting opinion from the passengers traveled in city bus, I found that city

is providing good services to its passenger.

    1)Routes of bus:

Majority of the passenger can get bus for the place where they want to go. So there

is no more dissatisfaction among passenger with the route. I also get suggestion

from passenger that city bus should run buses for all possible routes.

    2)Timing of bus:

Passenger is not so satisfied with the timing of bus. More than 40% passenger is not

comfortable with departure time of bus, and many passengers c an not reach at time

by using city bus. ne of the main reason for may be loosing passenger is irregular

    time of bus.

    3) Con

    ition of bus:

According to passenger the condition of bus is not very poor. The sits are not

properly cleaned and uncomfortable. The passenger get bored with the high noise

and vibration of engine, the efficiency of engine is not so good. Majority of the

passenger experienced breakdown in bus during traveling.

    4)Fair rate:

Most of the passenger travels in city bus because the rate of ticket is low as

    compare to others.

The condition of bus should be improved in terms of comfortable of seats,

    windows, engine, size etc.

The facilities in the bus need to be improved.Provide bus for all possible route, as well as in residential areas.

    Increase the number of bus.

Increase awareness about new buses like, CN , Video coach, because

majority of the passenger ever not traveled in that type of buses.

    Clean the buses regularly.

The city bus terminals need to be modernized.

Ticket and reservation should be available from many public places .
