After 30 years of servicing Schuylkill County as Big Brothers Big Sisters, the name of the organization has changed to Big Impact Group of Schuylkill County. The decision to disaffiliate from Big Brothers Big Sisters of Amer-ica has come after much discussion and careful consideration by the board of directors. This opportunity will bring greater services to the youth in our mentoring programs. The organization is thrilled to continue the same mento-ring programs with the same staff and looks forward to adding new opportu-nities to better serve the youth in our area. Its’ relationship with Big Brothers Big Sisters of America has been pos-itive and the program is exceptional. However, their new business model is concentrated on large population areas. Schuylkill County does not receive funding from the National Office. In fact, it was required to pay affiliation and technology fees that now have be-come cost prohibitive. Financial support has always come from the Schuylkill United Way, local businesses, community organizations, and the people of Schuylkill County. These funds provide community and school-based mentoring programs. They fund partnerships with the Potts-ville Police and Penn State and provide monthly activities that provide positive outlets for the kids in the program. While the name has changed, the goal remains the same – to provide great ser-vices to the youth of Schuylkill Coun-ty as Big Impact Group of Schuylkill County!

Mahanoy Students Win Video Contest

A team of eighth grade students partnered with Highwood USA to compete in the “What’s So Cool About Manufactur-ing” video contest. The purpose of the contest was to make students aware of the numerous jobs available in manufac-turing by creating a video. The team worked very hard on their video. The link to the page with the video is https://www.whatssocool.org/contests/berks-schuylkill/. The school who collected the most votes wins the Viewer’s Choice Award. Last year, the winner had more than 6,000 votes. Mahanoy competed against 29 other schools in Berks and Schuylkill Counties. The voting window was open for three days. Each student in the high school received direc-tions explaining how to vote in homeroom. Although stu-dents are not allowed to use their cell phones in class, Prin-cipal Mr. Sabol gave teachers permission to allow students to use their phones for the first three minutes of each class to vote for the video produced by our eighth grade team. Mahanoy Area won the biggest award of the night – Viewer’s Choice Award for the “What’s So Cool About Manufacturing” video contest. The 8th grade team and Mrs. Mayberry cannot thank everyone enough for all their help. This win is a result of everyone in this district and commu-nity participating. Everyone was rewarded with a swetpants dress down day! Mahanoy competed against 29 other districts in Berks and Schuylkill Counties and won by a significant amount. The competition broke several records in the process. In ad-dition, this is the largest competition of this type in all of PA. They would like to use some of our strategies to roll out across the nation. So again, we say thank you. You made our little school very popular in the manufacturing and business world!

The Mahanoy musicians thatparticipated in the County Band Festival are recognized at a recent pep rally. Pictured are Brandon snider, Noah Karnish, Madison Denchy, Kayla Schmerfeld, Morgan Dewitt, Kathryn McCarthy and Kerri Dewitt. Joey Gunoskey also participated.

Many of the best of the best student musicians in Schuylkill County took to the stage Saturday in the 43rd annual Schuylkill County Band Festival hosted by the Mahanoy Area School District.Musicians from the 13 school districts in the county gathered in the school auditorium for the annual gathering of musical talent, with 119 students taking the stage. The guest conductor was Christopher J. Heffner, an associate professor of music and director of bands at Lebanon Valley College. The host director was Mahanoy Area director of bands Allison Kline. The annual festival began in 1975 and was held at Tamaqua Area, and each year it is held at another school. Blue Moun-tain hosted the concert in 2017. The last time it was at Mah-anoy Area was 2004.Before the concert, Kline spoke about the background of the event.“It consists of students of all the 13 county high schools. They auditioned for the festival in November, and then we come together in February and March each year,” Kline said. “They (students) have been here since Thursday evening, all day Friday, though we did lose three hours yesterday due to the snow, and then they came in nine o’clock this morning.”Kline said Heffner chose the repertoire of music, which was forwarded to Kline and distributed to county band directors.“We work with our individual students between November and now to prepare them,” Kline said.Band directors from other schools were in attendance as part of the audience. Shenandoah Valley band director John P. Shoener said there were eight musicians from the high school. This was his first time as band director involved with the festival, but he has experience with it from when he was at Pottsville Area High School.“I was in it four years when I was at Pottsville. I played trumpet,” Shoener said. “By being on the director side, it’s cool to see the inner workings of the organization, doing reauditions and more. It’s cool to see how it all comes to-gether from the adult side.”Mahanoy Area Superintendent Joie L. Green welcomed ev-eryone and praised the students on stage for the work they do to prepare for such concert events.“I know you, as parents, know how much work these stu-dents put into their music, as well as other activities,” Green said. “I know how hard they have to work with all the things that they do throughout the day, along with keeping up their academics. I want you to know that music is a very import-ant thing in people’s lives, and for the students up here, mu-sic can never be taken away from them. Once they learn that instrument, they can pick it up at any time and start playing.”After the playing of the national anthem and a march direct-ed by Kline, she said, “I’m sure that I speak on behalf of our

Mahanoy Hosts County Band Festivalentire district in saying it has been a pleasure to host your students for the past three days. The young men and women that you see on the stage this afternoon exemplify many out-standing qualities, such as leadership, integrity, class, dedi-cation and musicianship, just to name a few. Because of this, you are in for a phenomenal performance, and you should all be proud of their accomplishments.”Kline introduced Heffner with his background in music. Af-ter directing a song, he spoke to the audience, which filled the auditorium.“I’m very excited to be here and to work with these young musicians on stage,” Heffner said. “We had a great three days. They were super hard workers and we had a wonderful time.”Before the final song, Kline announced the annual scholar-ship.“Each year, the county Band Directors Association chooses one student or multiple students from the ensemble to be awarded a scholarship of $500 to further their education in a field of music,” Kline said, announcing Andrew Dickinson, Williams Valley, as the recipient. The concert finished with a performance of “Kirkpatrick’s Muse” by Jay Bocook. Before the band started, Heffner said, “Thanks again to Allie Kline for the invitation. I had a wonderful time and students on stage really stepped up, given the delay yesterday. We didn’t alter anything and still programmed everything that I had planned to program, so that’s a big deal and they did an amazing job.”In addition to the above-mentioned high schools, other par-ticipating high schools were Blue Mountain, Marian, Min-ersville Area, Nativity BVM, North Schuylkill, Pine Grove Area, Schuylkill Haven Area and Tri-Valley.jusalis, republican-herald

Visit Dublin, Paris and London

Mahanoy students have the opportunity of a lifetime as the Global Education Program plans its’ fifth tour to Europe. The GEP, along with EF (Education First) Tours has sched-uled a tour to Dublin, London, and Paris in March 2020. Students that will be in grades 9-12 in 2020 are eligible to travel. Adults may travel with the group as well. Ms. Scic-chitano is the coordinator for this trip. EF Tours over 40 years experience in student travel and offers students the lowest possible prices. Despite this, it is still difficult for students to afford a trip of this magnitude. It is for this reason that the Art Club is seeking monetary donations or donations of services or products from area businesses and community members. The experience these students will be exposed to while traveling will serve as life-long lessons and will undoubt-edly change their perspective on themselves and their place in the world. If you would like to donate, please call Ms. Scicchitano in the high school or e-mail at [email protected].

The oth-ers are June, September & No-vember.-April begins on the same day of the week as July every single year.-Diamonds are the birthstones of people born in April.-April is also known as a rainy month. Have you ever heard the phrase, “April showers bring May flowers?”-In America, April is when we celebrate National Poetry Month, Earth Day, and of course, April Fools’ Day. April 15th is also no-torious for being Tax Day.-But around the globe, April is an important month, too. Red Out Day A “RED OUT” dress down day to benefit the American Heart Association was held on February 16, 2018. Students wore an appropriate red shirt with appropriate jeans. The donation was one dollar unless you purchased an Ameri-can Heart Association tee shirt. The American Heart Asso-ciation conducts research and education to help fight heart disease. Their efforts have even reached our school district by providing us free of charge with three sets of mini Anne mannequins to use to learn CPR. This is a $2400 donation that they made to our school. Health and physical education teacher, Mrs. Brylewski, organized this event. Thank you to all who donated to the American Heart Association on the “Red Out” day. A total of 964.50 was collected.

Class officers of grades 7-12 stand around a banner created by the sophomiore officers, Jordan Karmonick, Tony Merch-linsky, Cole Soult and Haydn Wall. The banner expresses Mahanoy’s support for Parkland, Florida, the scene of the recent horrific school shooting.

Class Officers Organize Assembly One month after the school shooting in Parkland, Florida, high school students across the United States walked out of school for 17 minutes not only to remember the 17 victims, but to express their discontent. Mahanoy administrators feared for the safety of the stu-dents in the district if they chose to walk out of the building so they met with the class officers to devise an alternate plan. Each grade of officers was assigned a different task. The 7th and 8th grade officers created posters announcing the events that took place on March 14, 2018. The 9th grade of-ficers created a memorial display, complete with 17 candles and pictures of each victim of the Parkland tragedy. Sophomore officers created the banner pictured below, merging the logos of Mahanoy and Parkland. The banner

was then signed by Mahanoy staff and students and sent to Parkland. Accompanying the banner was a check raised from a dress down that same day - everyone dressed in Park-land’s colors of red or gray. The day began with two presentations, one by mental health experts who explained how to handle daily stress and the other by Mahanoy City Police Department, who urged students to talk to someone if they feel there may be a threat to our school. Junior and Senior class officers read a description of each victim as the gym silently listened. It was an emotional and well planned morning that made an impact on almost every-one at Mahanoy. Well done, class officers!

Quiz Bowl Team Competes in County Match

Why Homework?By: Serena Cramer

When you go to class and you don’t have homework you’re so relieved, but when you do get homework you’re like, why do we have to learn this? So, why do teachers give us home-work? The reason teachers give us homework is because we need education for jobs that you need to survive or jobs you want to do. Teachers want you to practice for that subject so you know what you’re doing. So next time you moan and groan about homework, think, because a: you will just get more homework and b: think of the benefits! When teachers tell you to do your homework some of us don’t. If you don’t do your homework, you lose prac-tice for your upcoming tests and you will have a pretty good chance of failing the year, which would be on your perma-nent school record. If you go to college they will see that, giving you a very slim selection for colleges. If you don’t go to college you will have a tough time paying bills and getting a job. SO DO YOUR SCHOOL WORK!!!

After the Schuylkill County Academic Competition at Penn State Schuylkill on Friday, March 16, Mahanoy’s team poses with the Nittany Lion. Mahanoy placed 8th in the county. The Symposiums are one-day workshops of mentoring, mo-tivation, and opportunity for high school sophomores and juniors. Participants are students who are nominated by their schools. A typical Symposium includes presentations and speak-ers, mentoring sessions, and activities that help students gain personal and career success skills. The students who participate have the opportunity to explore a variety of op-portunities available to them after high school through their interactions with business professionals. Throughout the year, seven Symposiums are held to ben-efit over 900 students in South Central Pennsylvania. This program is offered at no cost to the attending schools. There-fore, volunteers and financial supporters from the local com-munity are vital. Mahanoy students that attended the 2018 symposium with Mr. Tobin were Maddie Byrne, Madison Cavenas, Morgan Dewitt, Joanne Reitnour, and Meredith Rhoades.
