Author! Author!
Kate DiCamilloKate DiCamillo was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania,
but her family moved to Clermont, Florida, when she wasfive years old. The family doctor recommended the movebecause of Ms. DiCamillo’s chronic pneumonia.
Ms. DiCamillo found that people in Florida spoke andacted much differently than people in Pennsylvania. Shegrew accustomed to the accents and different words andcame to love Southerners for their friendliness andcreativity.
Ms. DiCamillo attended the University of Florida andmoved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, soon after her collegegraduation. Living up north, she realized that she missedthe sound of Southerners talking.
One evening before bed, she heard a Southern girl’svoice say to her, “I have a dog named Winn-Dixie.” Ms. DiCamillo began writing down what the girl, IndiaOpal Buloni, was telling her, and it became the story ofWinn-Dixie.
Kate DiCamillo is the author of Because of Winn-Dixie(a Newbery Honor book), The Tiger Rising (a NationalBook Award finalist), and The Tale of Despereaux(winner of the 2003 Newbery Medal). She lives and writesin Minneapolis, Minnesota.

The Story in BriefBECAUSE OF WINN-DIXIE
India Opal Buloni is ten years old whenshe and her father move to Naomi, Florida.The two start the summer in their new homeat the Friendly Corners Trailer Park.
Opal goes to shop at the local grocerystore, Winn-Dixie, and sees a loose dogrunning around in the store. He’s an ugly dog,but Opal thinks he looks happy and fun.When the store manager says he is going tocall the pound, Opal claims the dog is hers.She calls him Winn-Dixie and he follows herout of the store and back to her house.
Opal tells Winn-Dixie to wait outside whileshe talks to her dad about wanting to helpthe less fortunate, something he is alwaystelling her they should do. Opal introducesWinn-Dixie to her dad, and he falls in lovewith the dog’s smile and sense of humor. Herfather agrees that the dog can stay.
Opal cleans Winn-Dixie up as best she can.While giving him a bath, Opal decides thatshe wants to find out more about her mother,who left when Opal was just three years old.Winn-Dixie agrees with a sneeze that this is agood idea. Opal convinces her father to tellher ten things about her mother.
Opal is lonely in her new town, but soonWinn-Dixie helps her find new friends.Librarian Miss Franny Block thinks Winn-Dixie is the bear that snuck into herlibrary years before, but Opal calms herdown. Soon the three of them are goodfriends.
Otis at Gertrude’s Pets agrees to give Winn-Dixie a new collar and leash if Opal will helpto clean the shop. Gloria Dump, who theDewberry brothers say is a witch, feeds apeanut-butter sandwich to Winn-Dixie when
he runs over to say hello. Opal follows andsoon she is entertaining Gloria with herstories.
All Opal’s new friends share their ownstories with Opal. Miss Franny Block tells thestory of how her great-grandfather LittmusW. Block fought in the Civil War. Later hecame to Naomi and built a candy factory. Hisworld-famous candy tastes of root beer,strawberries, and sadness.
Otis lets the animals out of their cages inthe pet store and plays his guitar for them.He was in jail for playing his guitar on thestreet and so now he will only play inside thestore.
Gloria Dump places empty bottles on thetree in her backyard to help keep troublesaway. She explains to Opal how important itis to focus on what someone does in thepresent, not on the mistakes they made in thepast.
Gloria and Opal decide to have a party andinvite all of Opal’s new friends. Gloria alsoasks Opal to invite Steve and DunlapDewberry, because she thinks they want tobe friends with Opal. Everyone arrives withspecial treats and the party begins. A suddenthunderstorm causes all of them to runinside.
Opal is worried when she can’t find Winn-Dixie. She remembers his fear ofstorms as she and her father set out to findhim. When they come back to Gloria’s house,they find that he was hiding under her bed!As they all sing along to Otis’s guitar-playing,Opal realizes how much she has learned fromher new friends.
