Plato A Hicks was born August 3 1892 He married Dicie Whiteside They had two sons Jeter and Paul His educa-tion included graduation from South Fork Institute Wake Forest College with an A B Degree and the Southern Baptist Theological Seminary with B S T De-gree He was ordained to the ministry on July 28 1915 These very scanty data introduce a man who was a very excel-lent pastor a strong advocate of church organizations and a splend id organ izer of sermon materials While he was at Boone he was instrumental in organizing a Mens Brotherhood getting a tudcnt secretary for the Bapt ist Student Union

on the college campus reorganizing and departmentalizing the Sunday School and getting the first unit of the new building p rogram completed His booming Hello howre you is well remembered by those who knew him

Plato Albert Hi cks was born in Burke County August 3 1892 son of Joseph Martin Hicks and Mary Jo Denton Hi cks In 1912 he felt the call to preach and surrendered to the wi ll of the Lord He attended Wake Forest College where he took his AB degree and he di d two years of work at the Southern Seminary Loui svi l le Ky where he took a gr aduate degree

Hi s first pastorat e was at Hil debran near Hickory He served next at Western Avenue Church in Statesvmiddot11e for four years He was pastor of the Frst Church Boone for seven years For twelve years he was pastor in the Gas t on Assoc i ation Mount Zion and Shady Grove churches When he retired in 1957 he moved to Lincoln County and put his membership i n the Southside Chur ch Lincolnton

It was her e he pr oved the r eal mettl e of hi s mini steri a l character Serving outside the pulpi t where he had become accustomed to serve somewhat as the central figure he became a layman after his pastors heart Eddie Reynolds h i s pastor said he l earned to l ean on hi s counsel and support not as a layman but as a special layman

His thoroughness mi ld manner genuine concern and schol arly approach to all problems won for him a wide range of fri ends and made hi m a most valuable servant i n the vineyard of the Lord regardless of what order the service

He r etired permanently from every earthly min i stry February 13 1963

to accept a place i n his eterna l home to serve i n the pre sence of the Lord he had so admirably served in the lowly paths of th is earth
