E.O.E.

Notes from the EditorBe careful what you wish for... in the last Echo I wasfancifully writing how I had never been in a winning team atthe Village Quiz. Lo and behold, we were victorious in theFebruary contest - not bad for 4 Badingham gals and acouple of Suffolk lads. For the very first time we got ourhands on the fabled trophy.. but at the March quiz we camelast! We were even beaten by the Hormonal Hussies whohave being doing their utmost to win the wooden spoonsince the regular monthly quiz started, back in 2003.

Thank you to everyone who has been sending in lists of birds they havespotted in the village. Janet Barwell and Jennie and Paul Collins are our‘super spotters’ amassing 41 birds between them - I only managed to add twomore to the list. Keep your eyes peeled and let me know what you see. It’s time to - try to - remember those country dancing moves as Syzewell Gapreturn to entertain us. The last time they were here, at the Fosters’ 5 yearsago, was an evening full of fun and laughter - although my Auntie Sheila isprobably still not recovered from being my partner! - so don’t forget to bookyour tickets for the Ceilidh at the Village Hall.I’ve included some dates in the Diary for the end of March, just in case theEcho is out in time. If you are making plans, don’t forget to drop me a line soI can include your events. With best wishes, Tish

We have exciting plans to develop the shop & caféthis summer - we have been awarded fundingthrough the Suffolk Rural Fund to create a gardenand outdoor eating area in the triangle of land nextto the caféWe are planning to grow our own fresh salad andherbs, and there will be an outdoor seating area forcustomers to enjoy a bit of al fresco eating andsocialising.Work is already under way - a few volunteers started to clear the site on March11 and by the time you read this, some of the area should have been levelledready to create seating areas, tables and raised beds for growing herbs andvegetables. It’s an exciting project that will allow us to cater for more visitors and make theshop & café even more of a focal point on Low Road.A new Spring/Summer menu will be introduced from the beginning of April. We’re keeping some of the old favourites but you’ll find a salad bowl optionalong with one or two new specials.

We also have some wonderful new signs for the shop which are making itmuch easier for visitors to find us. Thanks to Mik Bedson for providing boardsand Jayne Stansfeld for the artwork.

With Valentine’s Day and Mother’s Day the big occasions in February andMarch the feature display in the shop was used to showcase a temptingselection of handmade crafts and gifts for those occasions. These provedvery popular so huge thanks to customers for supporting our local crafts-people. Don’t miss a new display of gifts and decorations for Easter which thisyear falls on April 14-17.A special juicing event in February was very well attended and there wasmuch hilarity as a selection of fruits and vegetables were turned into deliciousrefreshments. We have another ‘come and try’ event coming up too - see rightfor details. The once-a-month Sunday opening continues to be a big success - our creamteas seem to go down very well! - so do come along and support this weekendopening which is from 3pm to 5pm on the first Sunday of the month.

And don’t miss our very first poetry café - another exciting new event!

LAZY’ SHOPPERS WARNEDFraudsters are having a lovely timewhen people are spending online.Shoppers are lazy and failing to protectthemselves online, a senior policeofficer has warned.  DCS David Clark, who oversees the UK's National FraudReporting Centre, accused shoppers ofleaving their Crown Jewels on displaywhen handing out their passwords andcard details to suspect websites. He said shoppers have become care-less, knowing card companies willrefund if goods don’t arrive or are faulty. However, banks are increasingly askingcustomers to prove they have not beennegligent.Action Fraud advises shoppers toensure their computers have up-to-date anti-virus software and a firewallinstalled. You should also sign up to verified byVisa or MasterCard Secure Code to addan extra layer of security when you arebuying online. Also, look for the locked padlock icon inthe web address bar to check you aredealing with a secure website.  If thereisn’t one, don’t hand over your carddetails.  It is also sensible to have aseparate debit or credit card for shop-ping online, so criminals cannot accessyour main bank account.I hope after this you will be SAFE NOTSORRY.

FREE ANTI-VIRUS SOFTWAREAVG and Sophos are two of the anti-virus companies offering free softwareto protect home users. Their aim is toreduce the number of viruses in circula-tion which might attack their businesscustomers.

ROGUE TRADERSIn Essex there have been three reportsof roofers calling at homes, claiming tobe from Trading Standards. The callersclaim that a roofer who recently carriedout work is being investigated. Theyoffer to carry out a survey of theresident’s roof saying the householderwill be able to claim compensation aspart of the investigation. They then askfor a fee of around £2,000.Trading Standards Officers will NEVERask a resident for money. They arehighly unlikely to visit a consumer’shome unless they have already beenasked to by the consumer or a trustedfriend or relative. Here are some precautions you cantake to guard against doorstep callers: Fit and use a door security chain

when you open the door. Check the identification of a caller by

ringing their employer. Use thephone number from your PhoneBook and not one they might supply.

Do not let anyone carry out work onyour house until you get a secondopinion and never agree to callerswho say “we are only in the areatoday”.

Never keep large sums of money inthe house and keep purses out ofsight, not near the door.

For further advice on rogue tradersplease call 0345 4040 506 or [email protected] Easter have a good, safe holiday. Sonja

FROM SONJA'S ARCHIVESSpring reminds me of daffodils, cowslips, primroses, violets etc; lambs frisking in the fields in front of ourbungalow. Of course, Butley Woods comes to mind, they have wonderful daffodils and bluebells - anyonecan go and see them, advertised in the EADT everyspring. Do go, it’s worth it.In May 1960 the news magazine programme "AboutAnglia" first came out. It ran for half an hour after theITN news on Tuesday nights, then two evenings aweek. With such a wide audience, they then put it onhow it is today. Dick Joice was the first presenterand the newscaster was Newman Sanders. ITN was,

however, sacrosanct and usually lasted 15 mins. The newsroom staff consisted, head of news, his deputy and several sub editors, the copy takers and secretaries(very different today and i can remember it all happening). Then Prime Minister,Sir Alec Douglas-Home, provided opportunities for both news and discussions onfarming, as he farmed in Scotland and Dick Joice farmed in Suffolk. The weather forecast was always the most important part of the Anglian serviceand came at the end of the local news bulletin. An accurate weather forecast is soimportant and vital in our area, with many miles of coastline, farming and thefishing industries.  Anglia Television was the first independent company in thewhole country to provide an extensive weather service, and linked to a faxmachine in Bracknell, Berkshire, the headquarters of the Meteorological Office. This was presented by the late Michael Hunt.In 1961 a team travelled to Amman to cover the wedding King Hussein of Jordanto Suffolk girl Toni Gardiner of Chelmondiston near Ipswich. I expect some of youremember that, it was televised all over the country. It was well talked about, asyou can imagine, and at the same time most exciting as who would have thoughtan ordinary Suffolk girl would marry a king? With my pedigree - that even goes tothe otherside of the world - a real mongrel at that, I have no chance to marry aking. Between Hussein and Toni, they produced a lovely son, King Abdullah II.More bits to come in due course.Sonja

Dr Dan Poulter MPMember of Parliamentfor Central Suffolk and North Ipswich

An important part of my job as an MP is tofind out the views of residents in our areaand in order to do this I send out regularsurveys. I have recently published theresults of a far ranging survey I have carriedout with local residents, as part of the on-going consultation about road and otherimportant infrastructure improvementsrelated to the construction of Sizewell Cpower station.Just before Christmas, I wrote to residentsof Wickham Market, Hacheston and Marles-ford asking for their views and comments.about the need for improvements to the A12I was delighted that over 250 people tookthe time to reply to my survey. As readers will know, the A12 is a key roadroute for East Suffolk and it’s long beenrecognised that it needs substantialimprovements in order to cope with theadditional traffic that construction of the newSizewell C power station will bring. With

high volumes of traffic already experiencedon the A12 from tourists during the summermonths, the building of Sizewell C will bringmore lorries and more congestion. These results show the strength of supportfor a four villages bypass, with an over-whelming 86% of people surveyed callingfor a fully dualled four villages bypass. Thecommunities of Marlesford, Little Glemhamand Wickham Market have spoken with aconclusive voice and together with my fellowMPs, Dr. Therese Coffey and Peter Aldous,I will continue to work closely with SuffolkCoastal District Council and Suffolk CountyCouncil to ensure that EDF are pushed todeliver the very best deal possible for muchneeded road improvements to the A12 whenSizewell is built. For advice call 01728 726 588 or [email protected]

FRAMLINGHAM AMATEUR DRAMATICSOur spring production of A DAY IN THE DEATH OF JOE EGG will be at theFramlingham College Theatre from 12 – 15th April, at 7.30pm.

The play is about a failing schoolteacher and his wife bringing up a childwho suffers from cerebral palsy. Caring for her occupies almost everymoment of their lives and their marriage is feeling the strain. They relyon humour to try and cope with their circumstances. Complex, grippingand harrowingly funny, the difficult subject matter is handled in asensitive and thought-provoking way.Tickets: £8 (£7 concessions) from Framlingham Stationers, onlinewww.fadsweb.co.uk or 01728 663486.
