PLUS, for the fi rst time in over three years, the creators and original cast of Triple Espresso will reunite on Actors Theatre’s stage for the majority of the run!

Triple Espresso runs September 11 – September 27, 2009, at the Her-berger Theater Center, 222 E. Monroe Avenue, in downtown Phoenix. Tick-ets range from $25 - $47. “Get In My Belly by Kokopelli”Dennis Minchella, PresidentKokopelli Winery

Harvest Season

This time of year grapes in Arizona and across the country are reaching maturity and need to be harvested, crushed, pressed, and pumped into fermentation tanks. The journey from vineyard to grocer’s shelf can take a few months to several years. Each step along the way the winemaker is making decisions that will affect your impression of their finished wines.

One thing most people don’t realize is that a winemaker has one opportunity a year to determine the future of his/her wine. This is tough enough, but even more difficult is the fact that the winemaker makes all these decisions in a very short window of time, typically as little as one month from the first varietal harvested and processed to the last. On the other hand, a brew-master produces beer daily or weekly and can adjust the flavor, depth and profile of the beer that frequently.

Once the wine is fermented, which takes a couple weeks to over a month, the winemaker has to decide if this is a wine deserving of oak aging or

a product that should be filtered and blended into a table wine. The winemaker also has to decide which type of oak they will use to age the wine. Nowadays the winemaker has many choices of oak from French to American oak, low to high toast, barrels or staves to place in storage tanks. Whatever the winemaker decides will have an impact on the wine for the rest of its life.

An example of a great wine just preparing to make an appearance to the public is the new Kokopelli 2008 Cabernet Sauvignon. This wine from its inception was designed to be a beef friendly, long finishing Cabernet. This 2008 Cabernet was aged in French Oak of a medium toast and offers a solid French oak nose with notes of caramel, dried cherries and a long deep finish. This wine will reach the market in late September and will change people’s impression of Kokopelli wines forever.

So, when you are enjoying your next cool, refreshing glass of Kokopelli wine, stop and take a moment to remember all the decisions that went into creating your wine. Contact us at Kokopelli Winery & Bistro to set up a private tasting for you friends and family.

A Scary House on Soror-ity RowBy Randy Montgomery

If the premise for Sorority Row sounds familiar, that’s because it has been done before (several times actually). Scantily clad sorority girls being stalked in their own home, in the shower and while partying is not a new concept. In fact, this is a remake of The House on Sorority Row which was released in early 1983.

In order to “get back at” a guy that cheated on one of their bellowed sisters, a group of sorority girls pull a prank and trick a fellow classmate into thinking he has poisoned his girlfriend. The prank goes awry and the sister is actually killed. They vow to keep the evening’s events a secret. All is fine until graduation night when mysterious text messages start appearing on the phones of those involved and bodies start racking up.

Sorority Row manages to use the campy storyline of 70’s and 80’s cheerleader slasher flicks with the plot of I Know What You Did Last Sum-mer with the whodunit aspect found in Scream and subsequent sequels to produce an entertaining thriller. While the movie pokes along at a snail’s pace at times, and takes a while to get going, there is enough eye candy and edge of your seat mo-ments to make up for the handful of dull scenes. Sorority Row is far from the best horror film ever made, but it was a fun way to pass an hour and forty minutes.

Plus, how could you not like a movie that features the talented acting skills of Audrina Patridge from The Hills? It’s just too bad she’s killed early on and doesn’t make it past the first half an hour of the film.

“The Informant” Actor Matt Damon & Director Steven Soderbergh, Oscar® bound!

Review by Stan Robinson

Director Steven Soderbergh gained public awareness with his direction of Julia Roberts to a best actress Oscar® for “Erin Brockovich” (2000) and the same year won a best director Oscar® for “Traffic”! The primary factor, his directorial talent of subliminally guiding the story through strong character nuances as the major elements are unfolding. Directing the three Ocean movies (Ocean’s Eleven (2001), Ocean’s Twelve (2004), and Ocean’s Thirteen (2007) followed, with Matt Damon as one of the stars.

Matt Damon’s portrayal of Jason Bourne in three films established him as an in-depth action actor with the films becoming my all time favorites for suspense thrillers. While working with Matt Damon on the Ocean movies, Steve Soderbergh became aware of his wide range as an actor and says that Matt Damon was his first and only choice for the role of the exceptionally bright, bipolar whistleblower in “The Informant”…

Based on the true story and Kurt Eichenwald’s 2000 book, the informant is Mark Whitacre (Matt Damon). He’s a high level executive at ADM (Archer Daniels Midland) headquartered in Illinois. Bright, with a Ph.D. in nutritional biochemistry and on the fast track, Whitacre has apparitions of rising to the top by being the ‘last man standing’. His plan, expose the company’s international price fixing

tactics, becoming the highest ranked executive in U.S. business history to blow the whistle on a company! It’s a good plan, and the FBI agreeing that it has merit, for several years starting in 1992 gathered hundreds of hours of videotape and audio recordings of international meetings, with Whitacre’s help. All is well until slowly but certainly a fact; inconsistencies’ become apparent, relating to the clarity of Whitacre’s involvement!

“The Informant” moves briskly along

with a narrative that’s not used in the usual way of adding details or providing additional insight. In this movie, the narrative is Whitacre’s thoughts, and after a few moments in, as he goes about his life, we realize those thoughts relate directly to his usual activities. Some thoughts have no relationship at all to the reality, only to what he perceives it to be. At other times, they have no relationship at all to any of the events in his life. At the helm, Steven Soderbergh carefully orchestrates the ingredients to present an intriguing story, while Matt Damon, with an extra 30 pounds he put on for the role, completely sheds any similarities to any of his past performances. He gives us the character of Marc

Whitacre that on one level we’re pulling for him, on another from his thoughts, we know he has serious issues. An early prediction, keep an eye on “The Informant” at Oscar® time!

Starring Matt Damon, Lucas McHugh Carroll, Eddie Jemison, Scott Bakula, Scott Adsit, Ann Dowd, and Allan Havey.

Directed by Steven Soderbergh; written by Scott Z. Burns; Rated R for language. Warner Bro. Pictures release; Runtime: 108 minutes.

“Whiteout” More than another suspense thriller!Review by Stan Robinson

For Kate Beckinsale, the “Underworld” franchise movies have given her a ‘cult’ like following of fans with action actor moniker attached! For those of us who are also aware of her performances in “Pearl Harbor (2001), “The Aviator” (2004) as Ava Gardner, “Click” (2006), and “Vacancy” (2007), the depth she brings to her character portrayals is the key. In “Whiteout” she deliver’s a portrait of a person who, like most of us at some point in our lives, is contemplating that all important career change, trying to cope with a past event that shakes one’s trust in those close to us, and trying to complete that final task to move on to a new start, and a new life…

U.S. Marshal Carrie Stetko (Kate Beckinsale) is the marshal assigned to an Antarctica research facility at the South Pole, comprised of scientists/representatives from various countries. Carrie has three days left before her tour of duty ends and her resignation goes into effect. Duty at the research center is mundane and quite the “matter of fact” assignment, research being the central theme. Carrie, along with others who are on rotation

to leave before the six months of darkness sets into the South Pole, are preparing to be flown out.

A body is discovered in the wilderness not far from the center. Upon examination it’s revealed the victim didn’t die from exposure, he was killed! Carrie files her findings with her superiors stateside and starts her investigation. Time is of the essence before an approaching storm known as Whiteouts because of the gale force snow and winds that virtually has visibility at a few short feet; Carrie investigates the first homicide to take place in Antarctica’s history! The bodies start to mount as the bizarre mystery unfolds, revealing long buried secrets under the frozen ice, as events lead to one ultimate conclusion: find the killer before he finds her!

Over and above the mystery in the Antarctica, one also gets an education on conditions, facts, and an insight into what has been often called one of the harshest climate regions on Earth, Antarctica, at the South Pole.

Starring Kate Beckinsale, Columbus Short, Gabriel Macht, and Tom Skerritt.

Directed by Dominic Sena; written by Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber; Rated R for violence, grisly images, brief strong language and some nudity; Warner Bro. Pictures release; Runtime: 96 minutes.

A Month of “Horrific” Movies AheadBy Randy Montgomery

The next month will deliver moviego-ers a slew of “horrific” film choices. I use the term “horrific” to describe the genre, not necessarily the quality. Here’s a look at the upcoming thrillers that will crowd your multiplex be-tween now and Halloween, many of which look quite promising, others… simply star Megan Fox.

District 9 (Now Playing) Aliens land in South Africa and then are kept in refugee camps. The aliens are not too happy about their accommodations.

The Final Destination (Now Play-ing) Part four of the popular series about survivors of disasters who are

then haunted by the threat of death in an even more unpleasant accident.

Halloween II (Now Playing) Rob Zombie’s sequel of the remake of the classic horror film of the same name. Gory and downright disgusting.

Sorority Row (Now Playing) A prank among sorority sisters results in an accidental death. The girls are then haunted by a cloaked killer who knows their secret.

Whiteout (Now Playing) Kate Beck-insale is a US Marshall investigating a murder in the sparsely populated continent of Antarctica.

Jennifer’s Body (Opens Septem-ber 18) Megan Fox plays a demonic cheerleader who preys on the guys in her high school.

Pandorum (Opens September 25) This sci-fi thriller takes place onboard of a ship in outer space. Murderous warriors terrorize the two men on board.

Zombieland (Opens October 2) Think Shaun of the Dead, but in the United States. In this horror comedy, Zombies take over and wreak havoc.

The Stepfather (Opens October 16) Michael (Dylan Walsh) returns home from military school only to find his mom’s ne w lover is a crazed killer wanted by the authorities.

Cirque Du Freak: The Vampire’s As-sistant (Open October 23) Sideshow freaks and creatures of the night invade a suburban town. The fantasy/thriller looks quite promising.

Saw VI (Opens October 23) Audi-ences and FBI detectives investigat-ing Jigsaw’s maniacal killing spree meet once again. The series is so popular, I’m sure there will be a SAW VII.

For forty years Tony Curtis has en-joyed a successful second career as a fine artist. Mr. Curtis has always en-joyed working with painting, sketch-ing and other mediums. However, his acting career took center stage. Now, Mr. Curtis finds himself more inter-

ested in working with visual arts. His acclaimed art works appear in galleries around the world including London, Paris and New York. One of his paintings has been placed in the world-famous Metropolitan Muse-um of Art in Manhat-tan, New York. Student Chefs from The International Culinary School at The Art Insti-tute of Phoenix Compete on Iron Chef America-- Broadcast Scheduled Sept. 27 on Food network --

Three students from The Inter-national Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix have been invited to compete on Food Network’s popular series Iron Chef America. This chal-lenge marks the first time in the show’s history that culinary students have been invited to compete in kitchen stadium. The episode premieres on Sun-day, Sept. 27 at 9 p.m. ET/PT and features the students bat-tling against Iron Chef Michael Symon.Student challengers include Katelyn Remick, 21, who is expected to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in Culinary Arts in September 2009; Julie Fiedler, 20, a second year Cu-linary Management student; and Tyler Burke, 24, a third year Culinary Arts student.“When you grow up watching

Iron Chef like I did, and somebody tells you you’re not just going to the show, you are actually com-peting on the show, that is a real thrill,” Remick said. “It’s absolutely a dream come true.”“This is a huge op-portunity for the team, our school, and especially for me as a professional,” Burke said. “I want to make every person that’s taken a part in shap-ing me as a chef more than proud.”“I’ve participated in com-petitions before but nothing this extraordinary, so I feel extremely grateful for being selected,” Fiedler said.According to Chef Eric Wat-son, associate instructor and assistant academic director who leads The International Culinary School at The Art Institute of Phoenix’s team, this team has been together for more than two years and has participated in many competi-

tions, receiving two gold and two silver medals in state and regional American Culinary Federation competitions. On Oct. 6 and 7, the public is invited to the Gallery Cafe for a fund-raiser dinner featuring four courses created by the student challengers. Seating is at 7 p.m. Cost is $49.95 per person. All proceeds will bene-fit the Careers through Culinary Arts Program (C-CAP) to create scholarships for deserving students who wish to pursue their culinary education at The

HOME IS WHERE THE HOUSE IS10 world-class DJs spinning and produc-ing house music all around the world.

1. Roger SanchezRoger Sanchez is not only the DJ’s DJ but the producer’s producer. Con-structing his entire new CD Come With Me from scratch, with outside assistance, he proves his skills as engineer, producer, programmer, and songwriter. Inspired by the dance Mecca island of Ibiza, the CD has already spawned several club an-thems, with many more to come. To experience him as a DJ, check out his recently released mixed CD Release Yourself 5, his podcasts and radio shows, or live, as he spins all over the globe.

2. Ben WattArtist turned DJ - it almost sounds cliched, doesn’t it? In the case of Ben Watt, the transition from Everything But the Girl to Buzzin’ Fly is more of a logical artistic growth. The recent release of Buzzin’ Fly Volume 3 is a testament to the music that Ben Watt continues to produces and fi nd for the househeads of the world.

3. Frankie KnucklesGodfather of House Frankie Knuckles doesn’t really need an introduction.

His nights spinning at The Warehouse in Chicago during the late 70s and early 80s is where the term “house music” came from. Recipient of the fi rst Grammy for remixer of the year, he has worked on just about every im-portant soulful vocalist in the past 20 years - Diana Ross, Patti Labelle, Mi-chael Jackson, Mary J. Blige, Natalie Cole, Chaka Khan, Luther Vandross, and Patti LaBelle just to name a few.

4. Gavin HardkissSince 1990 Gavin Hardkiss has been one of the biggest players in the American dance music industry. Alongside his siblings Robbie and Scott, Gavin has served as a label-boss, performance act and Disc Jockey; promoter and a key industry fi gure. Any devoted fan of house mu-sic has been following his career while increasingly seeing his name appear-ing in tracklistings and on playbills around the globe.

5. MurkBasslines too deep and dark for Talla 2XLC’s bog. Hi-hats that ring out like some particularly funky species of frog, punching through the night. And those synth hooks riding atop the groove like a painted harlot. These are the three basic components of the Murk sound, and over ten years later it still is emblematic of the pri-mal incarnations of house and body

music. In their own words, ladies and gentlemen, Murk boys Ralph Falcon and Oscar Gaetan…

6. Deep DishGrammy Award-winning remix team Deep Dish (Ali ‘Dubfi re’ Shirazinia and Sharam Tayebi) have earned their well-deserved international reputation as one of the best remixer and live DJ teams - chosen as Best International DJ by Muzik Magazine and ranked highly on DJ Magazine’s World’s Top 100 DJs reader poll.

7. Armand Van HeldenIt seems that Armand Van Helden has been out of the spotlight for a while, sticking to the underground scene. Fast forward to 2004 and Armand releases New York: A Mix Odyssey, a truly unique and ground-breaking mixed CD compilation blending 80s dance music from Yaz, Soft Cell and Blondie with his current productions. His new productions “Hear My Name,” “My My My,” and “Let Me Lead You” remind us of the brilliance of “You Don’t Know Me” and “Witchdokta.”

8. Junior VasquezIf there is a person in dance music who needs no introduction, it is Junior Vasquez. As styles change and people come and go, Junior Vasquez stands singularly as one of our

legends who continues to spin and produce music that clubland loves.

9. Robbie RiveraHe’s Juicy and Wicked and likes Sex while getting his Funk-a-tron on, so how else do you describe the mul-titalented DJ and producer Robbie Rivera? With his new mixed compila-tion Wicked in stores and distribution through respected indie Subliminal, Robbie has a lot to hum about.

10. Joey Negra (aka Dave Lee)Whether you call him Joey Negro, Jakatta or one of the Hed Boys, Dave Lee is well known as one of roots of the British house and garage scene. With countless productions and remixes in every DJ’s set, he manages to fi nd the best music for his compila-tions and DJ sets while exploring his musicality with diverse and soul-sat-isfying projects. His new set Kings of Disco, with Dmitri from Paris, is just the latest gift he has given to house music lovers worldwide.

The Night Owl

Brent Diggins is a freelance writer, Valley resident and PR professional at Mindspace, a Valley public relations, marketing and advertising firm. He has been involved in many aspects of the Valley social scene, and considers himself on expert on

many things of great global importance, including having a good time. You can reach him at [email protected].

BY BRENT DIGGINS AND EFIA MOORE

If you have an entertainment event or item to include in “The Night Owl” send to [email protected] “The Night Owl” will cover restaurants, clubs, bars, celebrities, music and other miscellaneous events.

Day by day it seems to be cooling down, and with the cool down there are more and more events for us. This week, we have some great dining news, the best places to find out what’s going down in downtown Phoenix and much more. To find out what happened, what’s happening and what will happen in the Valley; read on.

Dine4AZ.com: I went out almost every night this week. I know it seems extravagant in this economy, even for a Night Owl, but I was very frugal in my outings. For instance, I met my girls for a birthday celebration at St. Francis, a new restaurant off Camelback in Phoenix, and we all paired up to share entrees. I sipped $5 martinis and manhattans at Hanny’s. I split a sushi dinner at Hana Japanese Eatery, I grabbed a couple of drinks at Sidebar with friends before heading over to enjoy super cheap cocktails and underground hip-hop at Hidden House. You see, I refuse to let my social life go on recession, and I know enjoy-ing myself, even sparingly, helps the local and national economy.

Recently Shamrock Foods confirmed my stand for going out by launching a statewide public awareness campaign, Dine4AZ, to encourage people to dine out to help stimulate the economy. Arizona has more than a quarter of a million food service industry employees, helping to support that industry by treating yourself to a dinner out keeps people working, generates sales tax, and over all keeps the local economy running and growing. You have officially been ordered to have a good time.

Before you go out to dine be sure to visit Dine4AZ.com where you can check out participating Din-e4AZ restaurants, download coupons, and get the latest deals from local restaurants.

Downtown Phoenix: Whenever I tell someone that I love to go out in downtown Phoenix I get the same response, “Yeah its cool, but there’s not much to do down there.” To avoid hearing this, I’m selfishly sharing the best downtown Phoenix resources. Let these Web sites be your guide:

DowntownPhoenix.com – The latest informa-tion on events, deals, and news. It also has great resources such maps, light rail and parking information, and urban living options.CenPho.com – a comprehensive guide to all things central Phoenix (Northern Ave to Broadway Road, 20th street to I-17) from big chain business to lo-cally owned mom and pop shops, and everything in between. The Soop.com – is “influenced by you” and let’s you discover the indie side of the downtown Phoenix scene by offering insight to the latest lo-cal art, events, music, and personalities. The sight also has a classified web space for users to buy, sell and trade.

Iron Chef in the Desert: Who doesn’t love Iron Chef? Well, Savor Scottsdale is hosting the Iron Chef 2: Duel in the Desert culinary event in along with Arcadia Fine Wine on September 30th at Wolf Sub Zero Showroom (sounds scary doesn’t it?). Anyways, Mel Mecinas of Talavera and Payton Curry of Digestif will battle to be crowned “Iron Chef.” Just like the popular television show, they’ll have to prepare a host of culinary items using a secret ingredient. Tickets are $65 and include passed hors d’oeuvres, seated entrees, wine pair-ing and a cocktail party. To purchase tickets or find out more information about the Iron Chef Duel in the Desert event call 480-970-0646 or email [email protected].

Sandbar Chandler: We all know about the Sandbar in Scottsdale, right? It’s a good time. Now they’ll be able to have the same good time in Chandler as a new Sandbar Mexican Grill had a grand opening on September 17th. Larger than its Scottsdale sister-restaurant, the Chandler loca-tion will feature a similar layout and the chilled beach cantina decor. Located at 7200 W. Ray Rd., Sandbar features a Mexican-style menu, lots of TVs playing sports and a great patio bar with full-service private cabanas and “oceanfront” views of the sand-lined beach deck. For more info visit sandbaraz.com.

Delcoa Sundays are Back: One of my favorite Sunday staples, Delcoa Sundays are back at the Wrigley Mansion starting on September 20th. First, Delcoa is a great local band for those not in the know and they have a great little Sunday thing going (that was postponed during summer) at the Wrigley Mansion, which is the perfect way to wind down a weekend. The Wrigley Mansion offers ½ price bottles of wine and basically you can go enjoy the views and chill out while listening to some great tunes and enjoying the scenic views of the city. For more info visit delcoamusic.com or wrigleymansion.com.

Ice Den Restaurant: If it isn’t odd enough that there are ice skating rinks and an NHL team in the desert (I mean WAS an NHL team…), the Ice Den, which is North Scottsdale’s premier ice rink, has one restaurant already and is adding another. I think it may be one of those “only in Scottsdale things.” So, to go with their already established Over Easy restaurant the Ice Den will be opening 18° Neighborhood Grill this fall. The restau-rant will feature made-from-scratch comfort food favorites, highlighting seasonal products. American favorites like roasted chicken, salads, ground-fresh hamburgers, mac and cheese, and homemade pizza will be on the menu. For more info visit coyotesice.com. Be safe, be a good person. Till next time…

65% of Americans would live on a deserted island all by themselves for an entire year for $1,000,000.

There are two credit cards for every person in the United States.

SECURING A SOLID FUTUREFind Your Niche

There’s a strange irony to this reces-sion: new grads, the unemployed, and jittery workers barely hanging on to their jobs worry too much about fi nd-ing secure employment. They don’t realize that fi nding your own work as a self-employed mercenary may actually be safer (and more lucrative) than depending on the self-serving middleman known as “your boss.” The biggest obstacle preventing people from reaching their entrepre-neurial potential is not knowing what kind of work to pursue as free agents/business owners.

Some just don’t know what they’re good at. This seems an oddly defeat-ist attitude considering that these same people are simultaneously hop-ing and expecting that a high-paying employer will scoop them up. If you’re prepared to create your own niche, the opportunities for start-ups are better than ever. Old markets once dominated by big business are fracturing into never-ending niches, in what I call the Kraft Dinner syn-drome.

For many, while growing up no one ate pasta. Who needed it when you had those shiny orange noodles coat-ed with powdered cheese? Today’s consumers demand more sophisti-cated foods, whether it’s capellini, fusilli or fettucine. And we top them with a gourmet shop worth of spe-

cialsauces. Even Kraft Canada now produces more than a dozen forms of mac and cheese — most recently in convenient cracker form. That’s how a single product has fractured into multiple markets.

Ideas are everywhere. Science is churning out new products from drugs to smartphones; international travel is creating greater demand for exotic products; changing demo-graphics are fostering lucrative mini-markets in health, entertainment, publishing and travel.

Who is in a position to benefi t from these trends? Everyone’s an expert at something. Depending on your background, you might set up an import-export business with cousins in the old country; create a consul-tancy to help businesses cope with change; start a publicationor website for people compulsive about weight training, adventure travel, or personal coaching; or commercialize one of the many new technologies streaming out of research labs.

But the best potential may lie at the intersection of these trends. Com-bine the demand for more sophisti-cated foods with today’s time-short consumer and you fi nd successful businesses such as those inexpen-sive Michelina’s frozen entrees, or the ready-fresh delis of Safeway and Loblaws. Match the increasing power of computing with the rising pace of business, and you get Research In Motion’s BlackBerry. Spot the intersection of two trends, and you can build your own niche.

The Piper Repertory Theater at the Mesa Arts Center is proud to present Comedian Paula Poundstone “Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me!” On Thursday, October 15th the Piper Repertory Theater in Mesa, AZ is proud to present comedian Paula Poundstone. Armed with nothing but a stool, a microphone and a can of Diet Pepsi, Paula’s ability to create humor on the spot has become the stuff of legend. Little wonder people leave Paula’s shows debating whether the random people she talked to were “plants” – which, of course they never are, and complaining that their cheeks hurt from laughter.

Paula’s spontaneity and razor-sharp wit have made her one of the most popular panelists on NPR’s hilarious weekly news quiz show, Wait Wait…Don’t Tell Me. (2008 winner of the prestigious Peabody Award for Broadcasting excellence). Paula’s commentaries can be heard on NPR’s Morning Edition and read on the Huffington Post and comedy site: 23/6. Her first book, There’s Nothing In This Book That I Meant To Say, (with a foreword by Mary Tyler Moore) was published by Random House and she is hard at work on her second for the same imprint. She also just released her first comedy CD: I HEART JOKES: Paula Tells Them In Maine, 60 minutes of hilarious comedy recorded live at the sensational Stone Mountain Arts Center – because as Paula says, “It’s very hard to do it any other way.”

RALLY MONKEY A HUGE HIT WITH FANSShe Means Business When Her Team Needs Runs

For one particular die-hard fan, there’s just nothing more important in life than a crazed late-inning base-ball rally.Enter Katie, the Anaheim Angel’s beloved “Rally Monkey.”The fi rst question everyone asks is “How did it all start?”The legend of the Rally Monkey began June 6, 2000 as the Anaheim Angels were losing to the San Francisco Gi-ants. Video crew members were pull-ing out all the stops in their attempt to whip up some crowd support.

They came across a video clip from the 1994 hit movie “Ace Ventura, Pet Detective,” staring Jim Carrey, that showed a high-energy monkey eagerly jumping up and down. They superimposed the words “Rally Mon-key” over the clip and fl ashed it on the JumboTron. The Angels rallied, scoring two runs in the last inning to win. The crowd roared… and a new star was born.

Before long, the Angels groomed their very own prototype - and the ador-able, fan-favorite Rally Monkey was born. Once featured on an episode of “Friends,” the white-face capuchin monkey was brought on to fi lm a series of new Rally Monkey promos for the ballpark and fans.

The result? A tiny little baseball fan with unmatched energy and passion for its team. Big things certainly do come in small packages. Armed with relentless will-power and “Jump Around” theme music, don’t be too surprised to see her running around with a bat come future spring training seasons.

GOLF TOURNEY TO BENEFIT SERVICE DOG ORGANIZATION Canine Companions Provides Assistance Dogs to People with Disabilities The Dog Days of Summer Golf Clas-sic will be held on Friday, September 25, 2009 at the Ocotillo Golf Resort at 3751 S. Clubhouse Drive in Chan-dler, Arizona. Teeing off with a shot-gun start at 7:30AM, the event will include a post-tournament luncheon, a silent auction and a raffle follow-ing the golf game. Registration and sponsorship information can be found at www.ccigolf.org. All proceeds from the tournament benefit Canine Com-panions for Independence®. Canine Companions is a non-profit organiza-tion that enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partner-ships. Canine Companions trains assistance dogs for people with physical and developmental disabilities. Phoenix resident, Linden Aitken, received her service dog, Tor II, free of charge from the organization earlier this year. Aitken uses a wheelchair, so she relies on Tor for help with everyday physical tasks like turning lights on and off, opening doors, and retrieving dropped items. When she is tired, Tor also helps pull her manual wheelchair. Canine Companions is able to provide life-changing dogs like Tor at no cost to the recipients thanks to private donations, corporate sponsorships,

and fundraisers like the Dog Days of Summer Golf Classic. Not your ordinary tournament, golfers at the Classic will have the chance to meet Aitken and Tor and see firsthand how valuable Canine Companions as-sistance dogs are to their partners. Aitken is happy to have the opportu-nity to support a Canine Companions fundraiser. “I just really appreciate everyone in all of the different ways that they help Canine Companions,” Aitken explains. “Without them, (my partnership with Tor) would not be possible.” Volunteer puppy raisers will also bring their Canine Companions pup-pies to the tournament, and partici-pants will be encouraged to rub their furry heads for luck and enjoy some puppy love in between holes! For registration and sponsorship infor-mation, visit www.ccigolf.org or call Tournament Chair Pat Lawson at 602-312-3040.

Naked Dave’s Local Distortion

The Naked Truth

In today’s society it never fails, you get the good with the bad. When Guns N Roses hit the scene, they gave us Slash; however along with him we got Axle. When you get Tay-lor Swift, then along comes Kanye West. No matter what genre of music it is, there are always douche bags in-volved. The same can be said for their fans. When God gave us Dimebag and John Lennon, we got Nathan Gale and Mark David Chapman. I have never understood this; I wish someone could explain this to me.

The same can be said about Punk Music fans. DO NOT misunderstand me, I love Punk. I love what it stands for, and what it has to say. BUT! Why do some of their fans have to be such Jack-asses? Punk is some of the most outspoken music there is, and their artists are some of the biggest social advocates to date. But some people take being a fan to far.

On Saturday the 12th, I went to enjoy a night of good old fashion Punk Rock. Their were three excellent bands; however that was cut short by dumbass fans. After moshing began, security had to step in, for the safety of the underage fans. That’s when all hell broke loose; security was called fascist pigs, and bottles thrown. What could have been a killer night in the local scene, ended up being a drag.

Well enough of the rant, I did get to see a couple of great bands. Drunk on Tuesday, a Ramones meets Bowling for Soup band. Good times were had watching these guys, they were ener-getic, fun to watch, and tight. With Chucker (guitar/vo-cals), Mikey (guitar/ vo-cals), Nick, (drums),and Ryan (bass/vocals) and songs like,

Crime Scene, I Know I Said, and Dependent on Tylenol, these guys are a good night out.

My fav of the night however was Automatic Self Destruct. These guys were “The Shiz” Funny as hell on stage, with a bass player that was as wild as they come. I totally enjoyed the show to no end. I would like to mention their cover of The Dead Kennedy’s “California Uber Alles.” Changing it to “Arizona Uber Alles”, the stage was packed with fans singing along with them. They also did a cover of “Bloodstains” that was cool. Not leaving out there originals, like Blow Sh*t Up, and oth-ers, these guys left me wanting, more and more. With GW Aguilar (Guitar/Vocals), Kid Fay (Drums/Vocals), Johnny Black, (Guitar/Vocals), and J Grimm – (Bass/Vocals). OH! and to top it off Mr. Grimm, at the end of the show just throws his Fender Deluxe to the floor. Now that’s Rock n Roll or should I say Punk!

Founded in late 2008, ASD has taken the punk rock community by storm. The music is honest, fast and full of righteous indignation. Their live shows have proven to be unpredict-able and chaotic but always fun. They think of themselves as the nicest ass-holes that you’ll ever meet. DEMAND THEM!!!

As for the LA band DI (The Headliner of the night), that’s when all the crap started. I only got to see two songs,

however I will say this “ When the lead singer of an LA Punk band says that everyone needs to take it easy, you know things are getting out of hand.” I would have loved to give a

review of these guys, but that was ruined by a few rowdy fans. I will say though the bass player of DI will rival Steve Harris of Iron Maiden any day!

Naked Dave’s Gear Pick of the Week:My gear pick of the week is the BC Rich Perfect 10 Bich. The Perfect 10 Bich is much like its Exotic Classic 10 brother, but the Perfect 10 has many more tonal possibilities at the player’s fi ngertips. The Perfect 10 is adorned with an impressive array of switches and knobs that provide total tonal versatility (see above right). Mirroring the handcrafted specifi cations where possible, each Perfect 10 Bich is, well... a perfect Bich. The Perfect 10 is adorned with an impressive array of switches and knobs. Logically located for the convenience and versatility of the player, the knobs consist of:

• Volume for each pickup• 3-way pickup selector toggle• Master Tone• Mini coil tap switch for each pickup • Reverse phase mini switch

ACE FREHLEY – ANOMALY (BRONX BORN)

After a 20 year wait since 1989’s Trouble Walkin’, KISS’ original lead guitarist returns with a new album. The question most people want to know is whether it’s worth the wait. One thing is certain, Ace is best when he’s part of a team, contributing his solos and occasional tracks that he sings. On his own, he is just not a force to be reckoned with, as when he was a part of KISS. Musically, it should satisfy most… but lyrically and vocally, he leaves a lot to be desired.

Album opener “Foxy & Free” is average followed by the auto-biographical “Outer Space”. “Pain In The Neck” simply has no chorus but at least has a good guitar solo. “Fox On The Run” originally by 70’s glamsters Sweet fi ts in nicely and is one of, if not ‘the’ album’s best tracks. As the album progresses, it begins to show less songwriting strength. “A Little Below The Angels” is Frehley’s own tale of excess and recovery but honestly would have fi t better as liner notes in the album. With Ace’s monotone vocal, it simply comes off as goofy rather than sincere as he intended. Better lyrics would have helped too.

Album closer “Fractured Quantum” continues the “Fractured Mirror” series started on his 1978 solo album and is a nice piece. The album also comes in a funky cardboard fold open digipack that folds up into a pyramid of sorts. Problem is… the CD sits in the bottom without a tray and gets slightly scuffed up just rolling around in the box. Next time Ace, stick to the standard jewel case. Like his other solo releases, this contains a few good tracks, some decent ones and a few others where one has to wonder why it ended up on there either for musical direction or lack of songwriting skill. Next time, he should consider a co-writer or using songs like he did for his only charting hit “New York Groove” back in 1978. It may give him some much needed inspiration. – Stephen Wilkinson

Picture and Review by Chad Haire The Mini Cooper has been a successful seller for the BMW organization, with sales actually increasing . . . unusual in today’s sour economy. Now we get the Clubman model. It’s a stretched version with a rear cargo area and has not only two rear doors, but also a second door on the passenger side, five in all. While it’s nice to have that extra rear space, it’s not that much; enough for about five bags of groceries. To get more, you can fold the rear seat. The drawback? The door frame does block rear vision, but hey, it looks cool, right? Sort of like the interior that looks cool, but has a nightmare of illogical buttons and switches to deal with. But you get used to it. Why be like everybody else? When it comes to performance, there is more than looks here. The turbo engine is very quick, yet delivers 26-34 mpg. The steering and brakes have precise feel. The handling is that of a true sports machine.

But while we get go-cart handling, Coopers equipped with the run-flat tires like I had will have a stiff go-cart ride. I suggest conventional tires with a spare in the rear cargo hold if you need more comfort. One option we had was the long “panorama” sun roof that provides a nice huge view of the sky. Unfortunately, it’s clear glass allows the sun to roast the interior on a hot day. A sliding screen provides little relief. Great for Alaska, but Arizona owners will have to dark tint, which defeats the purpose. At $1,000 extra, you might want to pass. The base price of a Clubman turbo starts at $23,700. It includes all we need and is a bargain. But with panorama roof, special paint, racing stripes, alloy wheels, xenon headlights, radar distance warning, cargo net, rear spoiler and other items, we hit $31,450.

The Arizona Institute for Breast Health provides a 2nd opinion for treatment options to women whohave been recently diagnosed with breast cancer – COMPLETELY FREE OF CHARGE.

Each 2nd opinion is provided through a multi-disciplinary panel of breast cancer specialists and eachpatient is supported and lovingly guided by a patient advocate, a breast cancer survivor herself.

You can help support AIBH by sponsoring Pink Honor Lights through The Pink Light District.

These pink lights will glow throughout October on the Canal Bridge in downtown Scottsdale inhonor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
