So much for quiet months. Between the BCAPL Nationals in Vegas, and the Turning Stone Classic in Syracuse, it was going to be a busy August to start with. Dealing with a website server crash turned it into a nightmare. Without the help of everyone listed as contributors just to the left of here, this issue might have never happened. I owe each of them a round.

A big welcome to Westood Tap & Grill, whose ad can be found on page 11.

Looking forward to seeing all of the pool players out at Fort McDowell for the BCA Southwest Regional. This is always a great event and I don’t expect this year to be any different. Don’t miss the fundraiser on Saturday night for Lawrence Ybarra.

-Until next time Mike

Hirose wins at Knobbys

Bruce Hirose topped a field of twenty one players to win Knobby’s 9 & Under 8-Ball tournament on August 7th.

Hirose squeaked out a tough 2-1 win, over a very strong Sara Sorg, for the hot-seat.

Jose Gonzalez was on a tear on the left side of the board, after losing to birthday girl Claudia Morado. Gonzalez had wins over Joe Nicita, Chad Metivier, Mo-rado and Mike Howerton, before sending Sorg to the seats in third place. Jose made quick work of Hirose in the first set of the finals, winning 2-0, but it was Hirose scoring the 1-0 win in the second set to earn first place.

Complete Payouts:1st Bruce Hirose $2402nd Jose Gonzalez $1203rd Sara Sorg $704th Mike Howerton $405th Russ Baldwin $105th Claudia Morado $10

Rubio & Doepke Score 480 Win

Kiko Rubio & Scott Doepke lost the hot-seat match, but bounced back with a win on the left side of the board, to win the Max & Ted’s 480 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on August 15th.

Rubio & Doepke lost a 5-4 match to Chuck Bower & Jules Ray, but an emer-gency forced Bower & Ray to leave before the event was finished. That meant that Rubio & Doepke’s win over Dave Webb & Francisco Serrano on the one loss side was enough for a first place finish.

Even with Scott Frost’s expected domination of the event, fans were still treated to what may be the largest one pocket tournament the state of Arizona has seen, when the Diamond Pool Tour brought the 2015 AZ State One Pocket Cham-pionship to Kolby’s Corner Pocket on August 15th - 16th. The field of 54 one pocket players was split with eighteen “A” players and thirty six “B” players. The “A” bracket went as expected with four of the best players that Arizona has to offer advancing out of day one undefeated. Sunday opened with Scott Frost facing Gus Briseno and Bobby Emmons facing Bernie Pettipiece. 3-1 wins in each match saw Frost and Emmons advance to play for the “A” bracket hot-seat. Emmons brought out the best of Frost in the hot-seat match, allowing “The Freezer” to score a comfortable 3-0 win. Emmons would move to the one loss side, and drop his next match to Gus Briseno 3-0. The “B” bracket saw Joey Barrera, June’s top “B” player, adapting to one pocket very quickly. Barrera raced to the “B” bracket hot-seat with wins over Todd Rowitz, Timber Bridgewater, Paul Feltman Sr, Jim Galati and Joe Guerra. Barrera’s combined score through five matches was 15-3 while Guerra would fail to make the combined final bracket after a 3-2 loss to Mike Howard. The Greenmail.com Top Lady Bonus went to the tournament’s lone female competitor, Jodie Villegas. By no means a newcomer to one pocket tourna-ments, Villegas collected $100 in bonus money. When the two brackets met, Frost would flex his one pocket muscle with a 3-0 win over Barrera while Briseno would eliminate Mike Howard with the same score. Briseno then eliminated Barrera in third place, and Frost scored a quick 3-0 win in the final match over Briseno for first place. Being Frost’s second straight tournament win, the Greenmail.com bounty was not collected for this event. It will now roll over to September’s Tucson appear-ance at Pockets Pool & Pub. With the long hours common to one pocket, there was no Neil’s Garage Cabi-nets Second Chance Tournament at this event. It will make its return next month in Tucson. Presenting Sponsor, Casino Del Sol Resort, provided a gift certificate by ran-dom drawing for a two night stay at the resort. Matt Gagne was the lucky win-ner of this gift certificate at this event. While Scott Frost held his place at the top of the “A” player points list, Bobby Emmons climbed into second place, bumping Spike Aiardo down to third. With his second straight third place finish, Joey Barrera moved to the top of the “B” player points list, dropping Nick Kline to second place. Kline, however, still has a stranglehold on the Junior points list. Tour organizers expressed their appreciation to Jimmy and his staff at Kolby’s for the long hours on both days of this event. Lenny Marshall split his time be-tween competing in the event and putting together another great stream shown on ontherailtv.com. Rick Schmitz also played in the event and provided the tour and players with more of his outstanding photographs. “The Voice of the Dia-mond Pool Tour” George Teyechea was back in the commentary booth at this event, much to the delight of the fans watching the stream. The Diamond Pool Tour heads back to Pockets Pool & Pub in Tucson on Sep-tember 19th - 20th for 10-Ball on the 9’ tables.

Who Likes To Watch?

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

Can you learn anything for watching pool? I vote yes. I have watched more pool than I have played and I watched more amateur players than professional players. I have seen many dif-ferent ways to play the game we love. Even the pro players use different strokes with flash or flare. Some spin the rock (moving the cue ball around the table) most use what comes natural to them.

Pool is a delicate game and compares easily with other activities and sports. Bowling, golf and tennis come to mind of games that can have flash. I also compare playing a musical instru-ment, for example the violin, to playing pool. If I picked up a violin, held my fingers on the correct strings, and moved the bow across the strings that would produce the notes but that would not be music. The talent comes in the ability to apply the basic technics and put some flare or flash into playing the instrument.

What we have to ask ourselves as pool play-ers is “Does your pool game have any flare or flash? Any personal touch?” I work with so many players that have the mechanics down of a pool stroke, but can’t get the response that they desire from the cue ball.

In comparison, knowing the steps to a dance like the waltz and stepping on the footprints is not dancing.

What defines “flash” or “flare” for you? For me it is all about stroke and how they spin the rock using that extra rail in position, which makes some shots easier.

Spinning the rock or moving the cue ball around the table is different for each player. On the men’s side of the game, you can’t match the flash of Efren Reyes. For the ladies, I like to watch Vivian Villareal. Of course, I like flash.

How does one add flash or flare into their per-sonal pool game? The simple answer is to shoot like no one is watching. I understand that is harder than it sounds, because we all get some level of stage fright and we want to perform at a high level. For myself, being an instructor puts even more of a target on my back, which means more pressure. Pressure can be handed in differ-ent ways. For example, Earl Strickland talks to the crowd.

The next time you find yourself watching a match streamed, taped or live - amateur’s or pros - do yourself a favor and pay attention and

watch to see how they handle their cue. Do they play the cue like an instrument. Do they offset some pressure with flare or flash. You can learn a lot from watching.

Where Is Pool Headed? Part Two

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

In my last article, I drew a contrast between pool’s gamblers and idealists. I made the state-ment that the former group feels that gambling is an inextricable part of the game, while the latter group feels that it’s the gambling aspect of pool that has always held the game back. So, while both sides feel that the game would be better off without the other, neither viewpoint is correct.

Gambling is definitely a part of pool. It’s also a part of every other game and sport on the planet. But for some reason, pool gets a bad rap because of its gambling element, whereas other sports do not. Why is that? Your guess would be as good as mine, but my guess is that it’s because the general public still clings to the old image of pool rooms. Those pool rooms were dark, smoky places that also served as bookie joints and meeting spots for engaging in many other seamy activities. That may have been true of all pool rooms at one time, but it’s totally unfair for the uneducated bystander to make that assumption of most pool rooms to-day. Ironically, (and not to the benefit of pool) there are a few money players today who seem to take pride in their outlaw image, and aren’t really interested in doing anything to change it.

On the flip side, we have those I have dubbed the “idealists,” but will henceforth refer to as non-gamblers. They are the ones who study, practice, and play for the sheer love of the game. That’s not to say they never play for money, because they sometimes do. But in their case, the money usually comes as league and/or tournament winnings — if it comes at all. To them, an offer from an individual to play for money is akin to an insult. It’s almost as bad as saying you plan to sleep with their spouse. Or about like saying, “Hey, I like your watch, I think I’ll take it from you.” The non-gamblers’ overall attitude is that they work hard to earn their money, and they’re not about to risk losing it in a pool game, so don’t even ask.

Then we have a third group. These are the so-cial players. They play infrequently, but when they play, it’s strictly for fun. They might occasionally have a small bet going on with someone in their private group, but even then, their primary objective is to make it all fun. You will almost never see these people fight-ing over the game. It’s not until, and unless, a player from this group gets bit by the pool bug and steps up to formal competition, that you will see them become more serious about the

game. And it’s at that time that you will see them choosing whether they will join the gam-bler group, or the non-gambler group.

At this point, I would like to clarify something concerning organized competitions within the groups I’ve been talking about:

The “gamblers,” as I call them, are usually more concerned with their own growth within the sport, rather than the overall growth of the sport. Besides their money matches with other gamblers, their primary source for formal com-petition is singles tournaments, with a lesser involvement in league activities. They don’t usually show much interest in team play unless the payoff is high enough.

The “non-gamblers” are usually much more league oriented. Most of their activity will revolve around playing on one, or more, league teams during the course of a week. And when they do play in tournaments, those tournaments will most often be league-sponsored events that involve team play. And what is the “pay-off” for these players? Well, it’s usually simple things like trophies, patches, pins, banquets, camaraderie, social engagement, and a frequent escape from the pressures of daily life. If there is any kind of a money payout involved, it’s never enough to cause anyone to think they are a semi-pro. Heck, it’s not even enough to entice them to become a “wannabe.”

Once again, I have run out of space before making my point. However, I should be able to wrap things up next month. See you then.

APA’s Junior Division held their tri-annual “Junior/Adult” Scotch Doubles Tournament and awards ceremony on Sunday, August 30th at Bullshooters in Phoenix and August 2nd at Main Street Billiards. The popular tournament is where the kids get to pick an adult of their choice to play in a scotch doubles match with opponents of the same skill level and age. This event is becoming one of the most popular tournaments that we run, said Gina Nowlin, APA league Operator for Maricopa County. Both the juniors and the Adults have a great time playing together as a team, she said. This event is a great way that parents and kids can spend an afternoon together having a good time doing something that’s fun and safe.

The Juniors Division has grown to over 45 young players from all over the valley. The new ‘East Side’ division played their 1st week last Sunday and has grown in just one session to 15 kids. There are two divisions for the juniors. The “Young Guns” division includes players from ages 11 to 17. The younger group, dubbed “Junior Guns” consist of shooters under the age of 11.

There were 16 teams present this past weekend at Bullshooters and 8 teams at the Main Street Bil-

liards divisionwho showed up to play for trophies and gift cards this time around. As always, lunch was served to the players while the awards for the players who excelled in the weekly division were being handed out.Winners for the junior divi-sion’s Junior/Adult Scotch Doubles tournament at Bullshooters this session were:

First place – Michael Dale and Anthony RoundsSecond Place – Nick Kline and Kevin KlineThird Place – Tory Conley and Troy Conley

The juniors play every other Sunday afternoon at Bullshooters in Phoenix and Main Street Billiards in Mesa. They play three sessions per year, ending each session with an awards ceremony, lunch, and then the coveted Junior/ Adult Scotch Doubles Tournament.

Winners for the junior division at Main Street Billiards this session were:First place – Hayden Larson and Amanda Larson

Championship MVP Ryan Levengood of ATTA Girl went 21-6 with 3-30s and 227 points for a Power Rating of 3.555!! Ryan outscored his opponents 227-149 to lead the league with a 78 point differential.

In the Championship game ATTA Girl took a 30-9 lead after the first round holding Jason & Steve to a combined 9 points and shutting out Chad. Jason returned the favor going 10-0 in his second game followed by a win by Steve. After a 10-6 win by ATTA Girl to finish the 2nd round BOHICA was down 51- 35. Jason & Steve led off the 3rd round with a pair of 10-0s to finish off ATTA Girl and claim their first AZPL Champion-ship and $1500!! Third place and $850 went to Kip Anderson, Gary Wimmer & Eric Menard of No Name from Stockman’s in Flagstaff.

The fun began Friday night at Stinger’s Sports Bar & Grill with 8-Ball Break & Run Derby, the Scotch Doubles/Singles Tournament, the Big Money Singles Tournament and the Wild Card Tourney. Three teams showed up for the Wild Card Tournament and all three got bumped in due to two teams opting out so it just goes to show you that showing up is half the battle for the Wild Card! Congrats to the Pinal County Zingers, Ho Lee Chit & The Four Horsemen! The Zingers won their first 3 matches before being sent to the loser’s side where they won one before being eliminated.

There were 31 players signed up in the 8-Ball Break & Run Derby contest! Finishing in first was Francisco Serrano who won $180 and $3 off his weekly dues! Second place went to Bill McGavisk who won $115 and gets to take $2 off his weeklies. Jason Burkhart finished in 3rd with $35 and $1 off his weekly dues!

In the Scotch Doubles/Singles Tournament 50 players signed up. Getting randomly drawn, Harold Lyons & Francisco Serrano paired up to win five matches to win the hot seat. Ryan Levengood & Madalynn Alvarado played out on the singles side to team up in the final match to take on eventual champs Harold & Francisco. 1st place took $375, 2nd took $260 and the top two singles, Eugene Hemphill & Jason Burkhart, each took $55.

We tried something new this season, the Big Money Singles Tournament, and I’d like to say it was a success. Out of 16 spots we had 13 play-ers sign up on Friday. Over the course of 3 days this tournament raised $1,100 to pay out $550 for 1st place, $375 for 2nd and $175 for 3rd. Kip Anderson went 28-24 to win 5 of 6 matches to take first place! Second place went to Brady Williams who went 40- 24 but went 6-2 overall. Ryan Levengood finished in 3rd at 27-18 to go 3-2. Brady Williams was the statistical leader of the Big Money tourney scoring 513 points while allowing 402 for a 111 point differential. Fran-cisco Serrano lead the tourney with a .720 win-ning percentage on an 18-7 record and 4 30-point games. Ryan also had 4 30s. Mark Klein hit 2 8-ball breaks. Brady & Ryan both had 4 10-0s as well.

On Saturday the longest winning streak went to No Name who went 5-0 before losing to the eventual champion. Reconstruction went 5 in a

row on the loser’s side before being eliminated by Tough Times on Sunday. They also scored the most points in the tourney with 660. ATTA Girl had the most wins with 48. BOHICA went 23-10 to lead the tourney in winning percentage with a .697 aver-age. Darryl Ulibarri, Mike Chapa & Rick Meredith each hit a pair of 8-ball breaks over the weekend. Six other players hit 8- ball breaks as well! Anthony Begay of Reconstruction scored the most points with 232. Dave Webb of the Hamboozers scored 103 of 110 possible to lead the tourney in scoring percentage with a .936 mark. Joe Zack was second, scoring .930 of his balls possible. Dave also led the league in winning percentage with a .909 mark on a 10-1 record and a 28.09 match average! Gary Wimmer of No Name tied for the tournament lead in 30-point games with 3! Rick Albertson went 4-1 to shoot a 26.40 match average and lead the tourney in most improved player, shooting over 9 points over his career average! Next in line was Derrick Tutt who shot 4 points over his match average over 4 matches to go 7-4 with a 25.09 MA.

The TAP THIS Billiard League, after taking over ownership of TAP Phoenix in January, wrapped up its first Master’s Championship Tournament, on August 9th. “We just witnessed two days of some of the best competition I have ever seen in this league,” said John Muehling, one of the League’s owner-operators..

Players from 17 teams converged on Main Street Billiards for a 2-day tournament, which was bro-ken into 2 parts. Day 1 - Saturday. August 8th, was a Round Robin where teams played head to head to determine the final 16 for Sunday’s Single-Elimination play.

A few teams, including Ballizsticks, Mushroom Tips, Crazy Diamonds and This Team Right Here, scored high on Saturday, giving them preferable position for Sunday. Not surprisingly, most teams stayed about even on earned wins for Saturday, making Sunday’s matchups an almost even competition.

But things started to narrow down quickly on Sunday, as team after team advanced on and left some walking away with heads shaking (next year guys…just keep practicing). Finally, it came down to 2 Mushroom Tips Teams (Fall 2014 & Spring 2015), Go 8-Ball and Balliz-sticks. With 4 stacked teams, including many of the league’s top players – Greg Brown, Brain Desantis, Brad Andrews, Martin Colello, Tony Major, Travis Choate, Paul Javorski and Sandeep Sharma – to name a few. Final bracket came down to the Spring 2015 Mushroom Tips team and Ballizsticks with Ballizsticks edging them out at the end for the win.

Congratulations to Ballizsticks – Capt. Steve Johnson, Tony Major, Brian Desantis, Lester

Penning, Steve Zamanakos, David Barcon and Chris Tolson – TAP THIS Billiard League’s 2015 Master’s Champions.

Ballizsticks will be representing TAP THIS Billiard League at the National Championship in Nashville, TN, November 4-8th. Also representing TAP THIS will be the Spring 2015 Mushroom Tips team of Captain Marcos Romero, Travis Choate, Brad Andrews, Sand-eep Sharma, Ray Stacey and Jeremiah Buckman. Good luck!

The ListBased on “The List” from the TruTV reality series “The Hustlers”, the idea behind “The List” is a heirarchy of top players in the state, ranked by ability. Players on the list can challenge the player above them and take that spot if they win the challenge. Those who are not on the list, can be added to a waiting list and challenge their way up that list, for the right to challenge the main list.

While there are already lists for each different Arizona rating, we will try to keep you loyal readers as updated on the top list as we can. Players will change positions during each month, but as of press time, these were the players on the list. Please note that Scott Frost asked to be removed from the list as his prioro-ties are making this year’s Mosconi Cup team.

Bobby Emmons and Bernie Pettipiece split an expanded field One Pocket Mad-ness event at Bullshooters on August 8th.Tres Kane opened the field to more than the usual sixteen players, and the field grew to twenty three players for this one.

Emmons took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over One Pocket Madness newcomer Karloz Chavez.

On the one loss side, Gus Briseno and Emilio Maestes settled for a 5th place tie after losses to Pettipiece and Jerry Stuckart. Pettipiece would then defeat Stuck-art 2-1, sending Stuckart home in 4th place.

Chavez would settle for third place on this day, as Pettipiece handed him a very late night 2-1 loss.

Considering the late hour, Emmons had already agreed to a split with whoever came out of the one loss side, so he and Pettipiece took equal shares of 1st and 2nd place.

Norton & Bennett Dominate at Kolbys

Tony Norton & James Bennett dominated twelve other teams to run away with the Kolby’s 16 & Under Scotch Doubles event on August 1st.

Norton & Bennett handed BBQ & Manny an 8-0 beatdown for the hot-seat, and got comfortable awaiting their opponents in the finals.

The one loss side came down to two teams looking for a shot at revenge against Tony & James. Tony & James had sent both Pete Barrios & Mike Atma, as well as BBQ & Manny to the one loss side. After a 7-4 win over BBQ & Manny, it would be Pete & Mike who would get the shot in the finals.

The finals got started on the right foot for Pete & Mike, as they lead the match 3-0. Then James & Tony turned it up a notch and won eight straight games for the 8-3 win and first place.

Kolbys Scotch Split

The teams of George Bell & Donna Taylor and Phillip Salas & Hopell Ampon-gan split the Kolby’s 15 & Under 9-Ball Tournament on August 8th, much to the disappointment of Salas and Ampongan.

It was Bell & Taylor, who took the hot-seat with a 7-3 win over Chris Carpenter & Lionel Iglesias.

Prior to sending Carpenter & Iglesias to the one loss side, George & Donna had sent Phil & Hopell in that direction. After a 7-4 win over Carpenter & Iglesias, it was Phil & Hopell facing off against George & Donna in the finals.

The first set of the finals was a back and forth match, with both teams exchang-ing two rack leads, before Phil & Hopell took the set 7-4. A split was discussed before the second set, but did not happen. The two teams played another close set, that came down to hill-hill. This time, both teams agreed on a split of first and second, but to also play out the final game to determine an event winner. After Bell was forced to kick at the one ball in the final game, Phil & Hopell ran out the rack for what would have been first place.

Cortez Wins Stingers 8 & Under

Heather Cortez celebrated her recent relocation back to Arizona, with an unde-feated run through a full field of thirty two players at Stinger’ 8 & Under 9-Ball Tournament.

Cortez seemed to get stronger as the event went on. Two hill-hill wins over Ber-nie Store and Todd Dilley were followed by three match wins with a combined score of 18-7, and Cortez had the hot-seat.

Prior to losing the hot-seat to Cortez, Kurt Siebels had sent Burt Balancad to the one loss side 7-5. When Siebels got to the one loss side, it was Balancad wait-ing for him. Siebels would have no problems eliminating Balancad 6-1 in their second meeting of the day.

The finals was a repeat of the hot-seat match and it repeated the earlier scoreline as well, as Cortez won the match over Siebels in the first set 6-3.

Complete Payouts:1st Heather Cortez $350 4th Oscar Avila $802nd Kurt Siebels $280 5th Russ Baldwin $403rd Burt Balancad $160 5th Brian Long $40

On the other side of the bracket, we had George Bell & Donna Taylor with a 7-3 victory over the brothers Jack & Tony Scerca 7-3. Meanwhile, Aaron Purdy & John Schramm beat Mike Lalumeire & Larry Olsen 8-2.

Aaron & John didn’t stop there as they had a great run beating George & Donna 8-3 and then Crash & Tony 8-3. It was a repeat of last months finals! Aaron & John beat Burt & Russ 8-4 in the finals. Due to the bars closing, they shook hands and split $1430.

The first match between these two teams was for the hot-seat, where JW & Ricky watched a 5-0 lead disappear as they lost 7-5.

On the one loss side, Scott North & Rick Morris were on a five match winning streak. They would settle for third place, losing to Walsh & Jones 6-3.

The first set of the finals saw JW & Ricky cruise to a 4-0 lead, before dropping four straight games for a 4-4 tie. They would hold on for a 6-6 win, to force a second set. Chris & Don scored a lopsided 7-2 win over a tough team made up of Phill Anderson & Laurence Smith for the hot-seat.

On the one loss side, Chuck Sowers & Nae Saelee sent Phill & Laurence to the seats, and got ready for their shot at Chris & Don in the finals.

Chuck & Nae would fare no better against Chris & Don though, as they lost the first set of the finals 7-1.

Baldwin & Papa were taken to the hill by Junior Flores and Melchor Leal in an 8-7 hot-seat match.

That loss seemed to take the wind out of Flores & Leal’s sails, as they then dropped a 7-4 decision to Tony Yuzuik & Dan Lorrett.

Although a split was discussed, the two teams decided to play out the final match, which was won by Baldwin & Papa in one set, by the lopsided score of 8-3.
