What a difference a month makes. In the last month, I personally have taken a role on the Arizona Desert Classic Tour staff as well as taken over as chairman of the Arizona Ratings Committee. I am very excited about both roles and want to publicly thank all of the people who have offered their assistance with both new positions. The outpouring of offers has been overwhelming. I also want to send out a huge “Thank You” to Scott Frost, who has gone above and beyond the call of duty with all of his help so far with the Arizona Desert Classic Tour. Scott has brought his own personal sponsors on board, as well as helped bring on other sponsors that will surely make the 2015 season a big success. Head out to the DCT season finale on Dec 6-7 at Bullshooters to hear about some major changes coming soon for the tour.

Until next time... - Mike

Eberhart/Cole Split at Knobbys

Ken Eberhart & Tyson Cole split two matches and then decided to split the whole tournament at Knobbys 9 & Under 8-Ball event on November 7th.

Eberhart took the hot-seat with a 2-1 win over Cole.

Ed Scott was a man on a mission on the one loss side. After a first round loss to Cole, Scott defeated Bruce Hirose, Veto Leto, Nigel Francis and Joe Briggs to earn another shot at Cole in the semi finals. After all of that “one loss side” work, Scott dropped the semi final match to Cole 2-0.

Cole defeated Eberhart 2-0 in the first set of the finals and the score was tied at 1-1 in the second set when both players agreed on a split of first and second place.

Complete Payouts:1st Tyson Cole $140 (with side pot)1st Ken Eberhart $100 (no side pot)3rd Ed Scott $50

Tyson Cole and Ken Eberhart

Complete Payouts:1st Burt Balancad $715 (no sides)2nd Brian Reich $4603rd Chuck Evans $4304th Tres Kane $2355th Oscar Avila $225 (won B/C side)5th Pete Lhotka $115

In the seven year history of the Desert Classic Tour, a “B Player” has never won an open event. It was thought by a handful of players that a “B Player” could never win an open event. It took Burt Balancad to correct that misconception.

Twenty nine players made their way to Stingers on November 1st and 2nd to play 9-Ball on the 7’ Diamond tables, and Balancad was almost unstoppable.

As is always the case, day one contained more than it’s fair share of upsets and surprising results. Brett Huth went “two and out” with losses to last month’s winner Oscar Avila & Paul Grande. Ben Sutherland was another “two and out” victim on Saturday. Tres Kane looked to be in danger of the same fate after losing in the first round to Robin Clark, but Kane would correct his path and plow through the one loss side to make Sunday play.

The two players who set themselves ahead of the pack on Saturday were Balancad and “The Mail-man” Chuck Evans. Balancad had day one wins over Jerry Stuckart, John Ritonya, Jude Espinoza and Pete Lhotka. Evans stayed with Burt - win for win - all day with wins over Jack Ritonya, Junior Jiron, Brian Reich and Oscar Avila.

Sunday dawned with six players still shooting for the win. Things weren’t looking good for Bal-ancad early in the hot-seat match, as Evans led the 8-7 race 5-2. Balancad then took control and won five of the next six games for the 7-6 win.

On the one loss side, Tres Kane eliminated Oscar Avila 8-5 and Reich sent Pete Lhotka to the seats to join Avila in 5th place.

Reich then beat Kane 8-4 for fourth place.

The semi-final match saw Evans take an early 3-0 lead and force Reich to try to mount a comeback win. The match went back and forth with Evans regaining a three rack lead at 7-4. That was when Reich shifted into a different gear and won four straight games for the 8-7 win.

The first set of the double elimination finals saw each player go on a run. Reich started things off with a three game run, taking a 3-0 lead. Balancad quickly tied things at 3-3, only to watch Reich then win five games in a row for the 8-3 victory, forcing a second set.

The second set was Balancad’s turn to come out and take an early lead. He won the first three games for a 3-0 tally. Reich would then win two games, but Bal-ancad would not allow him to catch up. Balancad pushed his lead back to three games at 5-2 and then traded racks with Reich and won the case game for the 7-4 win.

The Desert Classic Tour will hold their season finale on December 6th and 7th at Bullshooters for a $2000 added 10-Ball event on the 9’ tables.

The Arizona Women’s Billiards Tour held their last event of the 2014 season on November 15th - 16th at Bullshooters, and in addition to crowning a tourna-ment winner, a tour points winner was yet to be crowned. While 2014 Points List winner Bernie Store held a decent sized lead on the points list, three players (Rebecca Wagner, Susan Williams and Sara Miller) were all within striking distance of the top spot.

The pool gods showed their mischievous side on this weekend as Store, Wagner Williams, Miller and Arizona newcomer Tina Hess were all on the same side of the board. Toss in former event winner Jaye Succo, Leandra Gaff and Ve-gas’ Ashea Erdahl and the bottom half of the bracket was a veritable minefield for any players hoping to advance. The marquee matches got going early on Saturday with Wagner defeating Store 7-5, Succo beating Hess 7-6 and Miller sending Williams to the left side 7-2.

Wagner would find herself on the one loss side one round later, after a 7-4 loss to road partner Erdahl. Meanwhile, Miller was sending Succo west to fight it out on the one loss side.

A couple of big surprises on Saturday were the eliminations of Susan Williams and Amanda Pulley. Williams won three straight on the one loss side, before dropping a 7-4 match to Store. Pulley held a sizable lead over Barbara Lee on the winners side but couldn’t get over the finish line and dropped the match 7-6. Pulley then lost to Store in her first match on the one loss side 7-4.

Sunday play got underway with four players left on each side of the board. Tuc-son’s Tracie Hamman handed Barbara Lee her first loss 7-4, and Ashea Erdahl sent Sara Miller to the one loss side 7-5. The next round would see Erdahl take the hot-seat with a 7-2 win over Hamman.

Bernie Store guaranteed herself the points list win with a 7-4 win over Susan Williams in her first match on Sunday. That would be as far as Store would get though, as she lost her next match to Sara Miller 7-4. Rebecca Wagner also sent Barbara Lee back to California in 5th place with a quick 7-2 scoreline. Wagner didn’t stop there as she next eliminated Miller 7-3 to earn her spot in the semi-finals.

The semi-final match would turn out to be a heartbreaker for Hamman as she held leads at 4-1 and 6-5 but missed the case nine ball at hill-hill and couldn’t stop Wagner from winning the final game.

The finals were an “all Vegas” affair between Wagner and Erdahl. Although the scoreline made it look close, Wagner was never really in any danger of losing the match and faded a late comeback from Erdahl for the 9-6 win and her third title of the season. Wagner ended up 5 points behind Store on the points list, quite an amazing feat considering she played in two less events than anyone else in the top four.

The second chance tournament on Sunday saw Amanda Pulley bounce back from a hot-seat loss to Beth Orth and exact her revenge in the finals for first place.

Assistant Tour director Tres Kane gave his thanks to Mike and Julie Bates, and the staff of Bullshooters for hosting and adding $300 to the main event and $100 to the second chance event, Jose Gonzales of Las Glorias Grille for adding $100 to the main event and his partner Kristie Ortega for running another fine event.

A year ago, tournament director Tres Kane, held Bull Shooters’ first Bank Pool tournament. To few people’s surprise, that tournament was won by Bill Garrett. Known simply as “Billy” to his peers, Garrett spends virtually every day of every week practicing his bank pool game.

Saturday, Nov. 29 of this year once again saw Kane bring the bank pool championship back to Bull Shooters. This time, the end result proved to be no different, but the road to that result was filled with a twist that held the outcome in limbo for a bit.

With the field being limited to only 16 players, it came as little surprise that all spots filled quickly and several people had to be put on a waiting list. Fortunately for a couple of those people, last-minute cancellations allowed them to play.

Maybe the biggest surprise of the tournament was young Skyler Flaherty. As a 7-rated player, few people were aware of the level of Skyler’s bank pool game. Skyler quickly educated them to that fact as he blazed a trail to the hot seat by beating Lance Smyth, Louie Fratini, Ed Gonza-lez, and then “The Man” himself, Billy Garrett.

Billy started his day on the winner’s side by beating Jerry Stuckart, Pat Dicker, and “Iceman” before losing the hot seat match to Flaherty. Over on the loser’s side he faced Tim Daniel – yes, the same Tim Daniel who took second place in the Mezz West State tour stop in San Diego two weeks prior – only to relegate Tim to a third place finish in this tournament.

It was at this point that things got rather interest-ing. In an earlier arrangement, Billy and Skyler had agreed that they would split first and second

place, if they both made it that far. Although Tres Kane was fine with the idea of a money split, he was not fine with the idea of there not being a clear-cut champion.

So, out of respect for the TD (Kane), Billy Garrett and Skyler Flaherty played out the final match.

Billy won. (But the money was still split.)

Final Results:

1st Billy Garrett $1802nd Skyler Flaherty $1203rd Tim Daniel $804th “Iceman” $20

Junior & Bill Score Hill Hill Win

Skip & Jan’s was the host for another unique tourney format on November 8th with 17 & Under Scotch Doubles. This tournament saw winners side action on the 9 footers, and one loss side matches on the 7’ Diamonds.

Junior Flores & Bill Vander Weyst teamed up to take the hot-seat with a lop-sided 8-3 win over Bernie Store and Oscar Avila.

The one loss side saw Jeremy Gibbs & Brian Reich fighting back from a late loss to Junior & Bill. Jeremy & Brian took a close 7-5 decision over Steve Stowers & Lee Brown, but then dropped a 6-5 match to Bernie & Oscar in the semi-finals.

The first set of the finals was back on the 9 footers, as Junior & Bill were still without a loss. They would take that first loss 7-5 and the second set would move to the bar boxes. That would be where Junior & Bill would earn their final tournament win with a hill-hill victory.

Complete Payouts:1st Junior Flores & Bill Vander Weyst $800 (no sides)2nd Bernie Store and Oscar Avila $870 (with sides)3rd Jeremy Gibbs & Brian Reich $450

Desert Classic Tour Junior Program

The Az Desert Classic Tour has announced a new junior players program that will kick off with the 2015 season opener in February.

All Arizona players ages 17 & under will be welcome to compete on the tour at no cost. While these players will be eligible for the same prize money as all the players, they will not be charged an entry fee, greens fee or tour card fee. In ad-dition to the regular prize fund available at each event, the Phoenix APA leagues have graciously agreed to donate gift cards to be awarded to the top finishing junior players at each event.

As another part of this program, noted Az players and instructors including Jerry Briesath, Scott Frost, Carl Stewart and Roger Long have agreed to offer gift certificates for free lessons to be awarded to random junior players at each event in the 2015 season.

“The Junior players are the future of our game, and we want to do everything we can to nurture their love for the game” said Desert Classic Tour staff.

The 2015 Desert Classic Tour season is set to kick off on February 7th and 8th at Skip & Jan’s in Tempe Arizona for the Arizona State Barbox 10-Ball Cham-pionship.

Main Street Billiards hosted the tri-annual APA Fall Session Captain’s tourna-ment on November 11th. This session’s winner was a new player to APA. John A. Finitzer, who has played out of Main Street Billiards for the last 4 months took home the trophy and $450 cash for his first place prize. Main Street Bil-liards has been hosting this APA event for just over 2 years now. We Hold the Captain’s Tournament 3 times per year during each session of play. This event has grown over the past two years to a full board of 64 players who compete for some pretty good money. Keeping with the APA’s equalizer handicap system, the tournament is seeded into skill level tiers making sure that players are playing opponents of the same skill level at least most of the tournament. The structure insures that a lower ranked player will end up in the finals match, guaranteeing them at least a 2nd place finish. This time it was Marc Underwood taking second place and $280. There were 2 3rd place finishers, Sam Gambino and Nancy Ann Kennedy receiving $115 apiece for their efforts. Rounding out the final 4th through 8th places was Carey Nolan, Brian Chapin, Evan Brinkman and Bill Huddart, each taking home $50.

The Captain’s Tournament was created to show appreciation for the team cap-tains by allowing them to compete in their own tournament. If on occasion the team captain cannot play for his team, he is allowed to designate a player from his team to participate in his place. The team captains are the ones that make our team sport work and this is just our way of saying thanks to them said Doug Nowlin, the APA league operator.

The payouts come from a $15 entry fee and an add-in by APA Phoenix Metro of $200. This session players were competing for a total of $1160 cash. As always, everyone had a great time.

APA Juniors put on their first ever ‘Junior Challenge Day’ on Saturday, November 16th at Bullshooters. If these kids are any indication of what we can expect in our pool future, we won’t be disappointed. The future of pool here in Phoenix is in great hands.

The purpose of this event was to raise money for the kids to go to the National event in July of 2015. Last year Phoenix APA sent 7 kids to the event on money the kids earned through raffles and other fund raisers. 2 of those kids out of a field of 113 players from around the country placed 1st and 2nd in their respective skill level tiers and brought home champion-ship trophies. Gina Nowlin, APA league operator here in phoenix says they plan on at least as good a showing this upcoming year as we had last year. This past year APA held its 1st annual Junior National Tournament in Davenport Iowa.

One of the biggest events of the day was the ‘Scott Frost Chal-lenge’. Scott donated about 6 hours of his time and $245 to take on players in a 1 game match to see how well they would fair against Phoenix’s own professional pool player. The most exciting part of the challenge was to watch Michael Dale, a 16 year old junior, run the table on Scott who broke dry. Nick Kline also beat Scott in his match. Both Michael and Nicholas are 7 rated players in the APA. Several players, both juniors and adults, showed some amazing skill on the table and a lot of generosity in their hearts.

The second part of the ‘Junior Challenge’ was the team challenge. 5 of the best kids against 5 of the best adults. This was a long anticipated match for the ju-niors, who threw down the gauntlet back in August. Their challenge was finally met on Saturday. The kids jumped out to an early lead with the first two players winning their match. The Adults finally prevailed by winning a nail biter in the 5th and final player’s match. Martin Rosales, for the Adults team squeaked by Selena West to get the victory. Among other activities going on at the event were several raffles for baskets and many other great gifts. In all, money raised to help the juniors go to the National event amounted to just over $2600 on Saturday alone. It was a great event.

APA Phoenix Metro have many people to thank for the success of this and all the charity and junior events. First and most of all thank you Scott Frost and Fast Lenny for your time and contributions. You two made this a very special event for the kids. The kids you inspired will look up to you forever (A couple of them will also be challenging you in a couple years). Also a big thanks to Mike Bates and his family and staff at Bullshooters for giv-ing the kids a great environment to learn the game they love so much. You guys have always been there for the APA, the kids, the parents and all the pool and dart players in the valley. You have made a huge difference in the pool scene here in Phoenix.

Thanks to all the parents of the juniors and especially to Ralph Craig and Donna Dale, who the APA juniors would not be possible without. Ralph and Donna donate two Sundays every single month to make the juniors program a success. Gina said she just couldn’t make it work without the parents being so involved. These kids are the future in everything, not just pool. Being able to give them an activity that they can build a skill in and entertain themselves keeps them occupied all year long.

Gina and Doug Nowlin would like to invite any person who is involved in the sport of pool or billiards and who loves children to come down to Bullshooters on a Sunday afternoon to watch these kids. You may say to yourself, that would be boring, or I just want to do my own thing. You have my personal guarantee that these kids will entertain you as much as watching any movie or show that you can imagine, Said Doug, who is co-owner of the APA with his wife Gina here in Phoenix. Some of the most precious moments I’ve experienced has come from watching these young people interacting with the adults, he said. Just call Gina or Doug at the local APA office for time and date of the next junior’s event.

If any parents out there have a child who might be interested in joining a junior pool league you can call the office. This program is open to any and all pool players, not just the APA.

Az Ratings Committee Bans Two PlayersAfter careful consideration, the Arizona Ratings Committee has voted to ban Alexander Torres and Omar Morazan from Arizona pool tournament play.

Torres and Morazan teamed up to win a scotch doubles event in November, in which Torres incorrectly reported his rating to the tournament director. The committee has confirmed with members that Torres was aware of his true rat-ing, and feels that the incorrect rating was reported to intentionally give he and Morazan an unfair advantage in the tournament. The committee also has reports that Torres and Morazan were overheard discussing the idea of giving the incor-rect rating before the tournament.

The members of the Arizona Ratings Committee feel that it is their responsibil-ity to protect the integrity of rated tournaments in Arizona and that a firm mes-sage must be sent that incorrectly reporting a rating will not be tolerated.

While the Arizona Ratings Committee can not force rooms to support this ban, it’s members have agreed to support the ban in any events that they run.

The ban for Torres will be six months, starting on November 15th. The ban on Morazan will be three months, starting on November 15th.

The Arizona Rating Committtee feels that this issue was only possible because of the delay in getting current ratings out to it’s members quickly and are al-ready undertaking changes to fix this issue.

Pettipiece Wins Round Robin One Pocket

A smaller than expected turn-out led to another round robin format at Kolby’s Handicapped One Pocket event on November 29th.

As is so often the case in a round robin event, the final match of the night deter-mined the event winners as both Bernie Pettipiece and Erik Lorenzen had made it through the day undefeated.

Lorenzen (an 8 rated player) was getting 11-7 from Bernie in their match, but it wasn’t enough as Pettipiece played two nearly flawless defensive games and won their match 2-0 for first place. With only that one loss, Lorenzen finished in second place.

The Future of the Game

By Carl StewartBCA Certified Instructor

In my lifetime I have seen a few up swings in the pool world, at least here on the west coast.

This has occurred when a new tour starts up, pool movie comes out, or a new product prom-ises to make the game so easy. Those trends have never really been focused on the life blood and the future of the game which is the youth players.

Many pool stories start with “my parent (father most of the time) took me to a pool room” and the child fell in love with the game. Then the child took it upon themselves to make it back to the pool hall even willing to cut school for the love of the game. To this day when I am asked how I made a particular shot, I tell them that I rely on “misspent youth”.

The youth of today have a lot of other options than playing pool and there are less pool halls to learn in these days. I was lucky and grew up with a pool table in the basement of my family home. I am sure for a lot of people a home table brings back memories, especially in the cold wet states like the Oregon Coast where I grew up.

At the age of 22ish, a pool hall moved into

my town and I drove by everyday for a month waiting for them to be open. A true pool hall is a very unique and hard to find. A lot of billiard rooms are bars first and pool halls second which makes it hard for the youth to even gain entry.

The pool hall has had a bad reputation for years and TV has not helped that. A pool hall on TV is where a person is going to get hit with a cue stick and all the crooks plan the next job.

All of these factors have lead to a down turn in youths getting introduced to the game of pocket billiards. Over the last 20 years I have seen a few high school programs, and youth leagues but overall the numbers are down and we need to work on changing that.

Ways we can help ensure the game’s longevity can be small and not very time consuming but make a world of difference.

Examples: When you see a junior player show-ing interest, lend them your knowledge and take the time to teach them any games other than the game of 9 ball. Right here in Phoenix we have APA junior leagues and events that are always looking for help and sponsors.

The local Arizona Tour Desert Classic Tour has recognized the need to support junior players and will be announcing exciting changes for the 2015 season.

We are all responsible to help keep this game we love alive and the youth are the answer to making that happen.

Scott Frost bounced back from a first round loss and went undefeated the rest of the way to win Bullshooters’ special two day One Pocket Madness event on November 8th and 9th.

Frost dropped his first match to Terry Osborne and knew he would have his work cut out for him if he wanted to maintain his one pocket dominance on this weekend.

On the winners side, tournament director Tres Kane crushed Paul Feltman Jr. 4-0 to take the hot-seat.

Frost was cutting a path through the one loss side with Satur-day wins over Bernie Pettipiece, Paul Feltman Sr. and George Teyechea.

When play resumed on Sunday, Frost kept his hot-streak going with a 3-2 win over Paul Feltman Jr. to set up the final match against Tres Kane.

The extended final match saw Frost defeat Kane 5-2 for first place.

The second chance tournament on Sunday saw Steve Lavalette defeat Eric Young 2-1 to take the hot-seat, but Young would not lose another game as he beat Paul Feltman Sr. 2-0 in the semi-final match and then defeated Lavalette 3-0 in the finals.

Mike, It seems a lot of the bars are trying to out do each other on big dart events, what are your thoughts? Being one of those “bar own-ers” this hits close to home, so I will give an honest opinion. And for anyone who says I changed my opinion since I owned a bar, they can read my articles from 20 years ago.

First, I am all for the dart play-ers and bars having big dart tournaments for the players and their establishments. Do I think some go to far, absolute-ly. Is it their choice, of course it is. Can I express my opinion, of course I can. Will everyone agree, absolutely not. That is why it is an opinion.

Once you give something to a group - be it dart players, pool players or regular patrons - and you take it away they feel like you wronged them. Right or

wrong that is what happens. Free coin drop this tournament, why not next one and the one after. Lower payout, what happened? $5 entry, what about no entry. You can’t keep it up or you will lose money.

It is economics, you have to make a profit to stay in business or you have to have an endless supply of money you don’t want. What is sad about Arizona darts today is that there is so much separation and it continues to build. The loyalty has been lost in the money. “Where can I make the most money and spend the least?” has become a reality.

This happened in the 90’s with soft tip darts and nearly killed it, until the bar owners figured out that no one was winning. We set it up so each Satur-day afternoon there was a big shoot amongst the four main dart bars, which were Cheers Too, Big Daddy’s, Back Tracks, and Rick’s Black Bull. The guys would rotate weeks for afternoon big tournaments ($1000 payouts were big) on Saturdays. I would say they

By Mike Bates

Ask Mikeaveraged about 70-90 players each week. It work for a very long time and brought the darts back in Arizona. All did their own Friday or Saturday blind draws, but agreed they would rotate the big Saturday afternoon tournament.

They also understand that certain bars had yearly events that they did and most supported the other bars. Back Tracks did the Mick and Mack and when they closed, Dave at Toso’s did it. On that day you supported the event, you didn’t try to out-do the other bar, that was unheard of. Don Henson, was at Cheers Too, and now Bull Shooters. Mick’s Tournament of Champions is still at Champions in Chandler. They and others should be supported not only by the shooters, but by the bar owners. How do we make sure things don’t happen on the same day, we talk to the dart papers, vendors etc. Maybe even call the other bar.

We had something planned for a Sat-urday night in September until I found out Metro had something similar, so I moved it to Friday. I didn’t have to, I don’t owe them anything, it is what I did. In closing, I hear that I do things against other bars or copy them. I would love to hear one time that this happened. Our pool tournaments are set at the beginning of the year, we do darts every Friday night, the Lady’s No Balls every other month, the Sunday shoots when a holiday falls on Mon-

day, the Turkey shoot, a special Christmas shoot and our ban-quets, that is all.

I back any and every fundraiser that I hear about with prizes or donations or both. I love do-ing these things and I love the game of darts and the people who play it. I am saddened by the lack of loyalty and how some can throw away friend-ships for stupid reasons. I would be willing to work with most of the bars to help support tournaments and not step on toes.

I have played soft tip darts for 34 years and have seen AZ darts go to the top of the ladder in all phases of the game. I want to work to keep it and bring it back.

These are just my opinions and I may be wrong, but I doubt it.

The Dart Thrower: Mental Quickfix

By Karlheinz Zöchlingwww.dartbase.com

Sometimes we find that things aren’t going the way they should, and we are playing weaker than we know we can. If you discover that something is wrong mentally, it is time to go into red alert mode. In this issue, I want to give you a short checklist (and a nice story on strange thinking in the end) to use in an ongo-ing match, when you discover that things are slipping out of your hand.

The main reasons why a match gets lost mental-ly are poor energy state and negative or strange (unconcentrated) thoughts. While mentally weak players can’t do much about this ‘cause they simply don’t know there are strategies against, other players have some kind of a list of parameters they are checking and changing when necessary.

So whenever facing troubles in a match of darts go through this useful list:

Quickfix Checklist1. Check your energy stateCheck your energy state like this:

• Are you having fun? Do you enjoy yourself and the match? If the answer is yes, then your energy state is perfect. If the answer is

no-• Do you feel bored or down? Then you run

on very low energy. Put all your effort into increasing your energy level.

• Do you have negative thoughts, do you grumble or are you even highly upset? Then you run on high negative energy. You must try to move to positive energy. Say “stop!” to negative thoughts, you are playing a game you love, right?

2 Check your nerves Are you nervous, are your knees or your arm shaking? If the answer is yes, use a relaxation technique, like “The Quiet Place” described in my article in the July 2014 issue.

3. Do you have negative thoughts or fear of losing, even if your energy state is okay?

Say “Stop!” to your inner self when discovering negative thoughts (works pretty well!). Try to talk to yourself quietly like this: “I am having fun. It’s all okay. I’m cool. I know how to play well and I just have to do it now.” This kind of self - persuasion will turn your thoughts posi-tive again.

4. Check your awareness

Do you have things under control or are you drifting out of the situation? It’s important to anticipate the things going on, and to be aware of your overall mental state. Only if you know what you are doing, you will be able to take proper actions against things not working right.

5. Check your concentration

Are you annoyed by these foolishly talking guys in the background? Or are you thinking about things like where to go for dinner after the tournament? A fully concentrating player would never consciously hear spectators talk-ing and would never let thoughts not concern-ing the game in his mind. Whenever I discover that I feel diusturbed by something around me I think of the world class billiards player Blom-dahl. After a successful final he was asked by a reporter if the sometimes very loud applause was disturbing him. He answered: “Applause? Was there any?”

These five points should serve you well as a during-the-match-quickfix.

(Article continued on page 21)

PAGE 21

Arizona Billiard & Dart NewsDecember 2014(Dart Thrower Article Continued from page 20)These five points should serve you well as a during-the-match-quickfix.

I especially like the Blomdahl quote, because maintaining concentration seems tricky even for some great sportsmen. What strange thoughts some people can have during a competition is shown by an anecdote of former chess world champion Mikhael Tal. Once in a chessgame he was think-ing about the sacrifice of a knight, and he suddenly remembered a russian song about a hippo falling into a swamp. He tried to develop a strategy for getting the poor animal out, but everything he could imagine didn’t work. Finally, fed up by the impossibility of a rescue, he sacrificed the knight on the chess board intuitively. The day after a newspaper wrote “At this stage Tal made a well - thought knight sacrifice...”

So whenever I discover a hippo or some other strange creature in my mind during a match of darts, I think of Blomdahl and Tal and ask myself honestly: Is there any? That’s all it needs to vanish.

Wiley & Moore Win at Kittys

Joe Wiley & Randell Moore teamed up to defeat Alexander Torres & Manuel Pinon two out of three times to win Kitty’s 13 & Under Scotch Doubles event on November 1st.

The first win was for the hot-seat, where Joe & Randell won a close 8-7 match.

On the one loss side, Chris Carpenter & Jim Digregorio were mounting a come-back after a winner’s side loss to Alexander & Manuel. Chris & Jim eliminated Tony Norton & John Walsh just out of the money in 4th place.

The semi final match saw Alexander & Manuel run over Chris & Jim 8-1.

The first set of the true double elimination finals was more of the same with Alexander & Manuel cruising to an easy 8-3 win. The second set would be a mirror image of the first set though, with Joe & Randell scoring an 8-3 win to capture first place.

Martinez & Pinon Take Kitty’s Event

Joe Martinez & Manuel Pinon teamed up to top sixteen other teams and win Kitty’s 12 & Under Scotch Doubles event on November 22nd.

Martinez & Pinon made their way through the winners side and defeated John Walsh & Chris Carpenter 7-4 for the hot-seat.

JW & Chris found Mark Norman & Matthew Ludlow waiting for them on the one loss side. Mark & Matthew had lost to JW & Chris in the first round, but made their way through the one loss side for another shot at JW & Chris in the semi-finals. Unfortunately, that match would go the same way as the first meet-ing with JW & Chris winning 7-3.

The double elimination finals saw JW & Chris break a 5-5 tie score to win two games and force a second set, 7-5. That second set would not be as kind to JW & Chris as Joe & Manuel won 7-4 for first place.

Kittys Scotch Split

Harold Lyons and Charlie Taylor teamed up for an undefeated run to earn the lion’s share of the prize money available at Kitty’s 15 & Under Scotch Doubles event on November 29th.

Lyons & Taylor would face off against Andy Benavidez & Percival Jauregui for the hot-seat, and win the match 9-5.

On the one loss side, Travis Jackson & David Lee were trying to make their way to the finals via the long route. After a loss to Harold & Charlie in the final four on the winners side, they had won two on the one loss side. That run would come to an end though, courtesy of a 9-5 loss to Andy & PJ.

Considering the late hour, the final two teams agreed to a 60/40 split of the remaining prize money.

What To Look For In A Pool Instructor, Part 2

By Roger LongCertified Instructor

So now let’s examine the things that really should be important in a search for a good instructor.

Taking pool lessons should be just like going to grade school, high school, or college. Can you imagine enrolling in classes at any of those schools and finding out that there are no sched-ules? No lesson plans? No organization?

Suppose on the first day of your high school World History class that the instructor had begun with the final days of World War II. Would that have been an appropriate place to start teaching the history of the world? Sup-pose as you started your initial grade school math class that your instructor began with high school algebraic equations. Would that have been right? Or suppose your grade school science teacher had begun trying to explain advanced physics, rather than covering basic science principles first. Would you have been ready for that?

The answer to all of the above questions is: no. There is a logical order to the way things should be taught, and to take things out of that logical order lends nothing but confusion and misunderstanding to the learning process.

Pool is no different. Before you can learn how to run a rack, you have to learn how to position the cue ball. Before you can learn how to posi-tion the cue ball, you have to learn where to strike it. Before you can learn where to strike it, you have to learn HOW to strike (stroke) it, and so on, and so forth. You have to begin at the beginning. And even when advanced play-ers find themselves doing things wrong, they usually have to go back and re-check things from the beginning (read, fundamentals).

This is the type of structure that good pool instructors will be able to offer you. They will have a program that will have everything laid out in a logical, progressive manner, starting at what should be the beginning. And they should be able to show you their course outline, as well as give you a short demonstration of their ability to communicate well, before you ever sign on the dotted line. You might even want to test their communicative ability by asking a question on how to perform a certain action, and then see if they not only give an explana-tion of how to do it, but also give an explana-tion of why it should be done that particular way.

Also, you really shouldn’t be concerned if your prospective pool instructor has never played professionally, or isn’t even known as one of the top players in your area. As I stated in Part 1 of this article, being a great player is far from being the mark of a good instructor. All that is important is that the instructor is able to dem-onstrate the proper execution of the shots being taught. And if the instructor has the correct knowledge of the physics of the game and has a personal grasp of the necessary fundamen-tals, proper execution will not be a problem for him/her to demonstrate.

Another thing you might want to do before making a final decision on an instructor is to get references. Whether you’re a beginner, intermediate, or advanced player; try to find someone around your same level that has taken lessons from your prospective instructor and see what they have to say about him/her. Ask them questions like: Was the instructor punc-tual and was he prepared with the exact materi-als that were scheduled for each day? Was his material presented in a logical, organized, and understandable manner? Did he take extra time to explain things that might have been difficult to understand the first time around?

Metro Sportz Bar was the scene of a controversial tournament on November 15th when Omar Morazon teamed up with Al-exander Torres for an undefeated run through a field of twenty seven teams to win the 14 & Under scotch doubles event.

Torres had been added to the list - a week before as a seven rated player - and had been informed by other tournament directors that he was a seven, but still reported himself as a six rated player at the Metro event. While the one game difference didn’t determine any matches on this day, Omar & Alexander did have close matches that they could have lost had they been racing to their true rating.

Omar and Alexander would take the hot-seat with a 6-3 win over Troy Conley and Jake Degayner.

On the one loss side, Justin Turner & Luke Haggarty were bouncing back nicely from a final four loss to Troy & Jake on the winners side. Justin & Luke eliminated Dee Riley & Chris Carpenter in 4th place and then sent Conley & Degayner to the seats in third place 6-3.

The finals match was all Omar & Alexander, as they cruised to a 6-1 win in the first and only set.

The incorrectly reported rating has been addressed by the ratings committee (see article on page 13), as well as Metro Sportz Bar. Both Metro and the ratings committee are taking steps to address issues like this and make sure they don’t happen in the future.

Paradise Pool League began their holiday season with their 2nd Player Appre-ciation Tournament of the year. This event was held at Skip and Jans on Nov. 22nd and like their first event in the spring, there was a lot of excitement in the air. Sticking to tradition, the Paradise Player Appreciation Tournaments bring a unique format for the players as well as a lot of added money. This event fea-tured blind draw, 3 person teams with every team getting a lower handicapped, middle handicapped and high handicapped player. This turned out to be a really fun format and the feedback from all the Paradise players was very positive. Combine this with the fact that the event featured multiple raffle prizes (includ-ing a custom cue) and free food for the participants, this turned out to be an-other fantastic event for Paradise Pool League and all it’s extraordinary players. Congratulations to the top 4 teams: 1st Place Dueces Wild (Dean Martin, Randell Moore, Tony Davis) $6202nd Place Trip 9’s (Jeremy Gibbs, Chris Negrin, Tami Hathcock) $420 3rd Place Cheeseheads Doc Rice, Ron Snater, Mark Catanzaro) $2704th Place 3 Kings (Steve Sword, Jamie Goodwin, Debra Rodgers) $90

Who are they? Professional pool players, that’s who.

And what does this mean to you? Well, if you’re not into pool any more than maybe being a ca-sual player, then it means very little, if anything at all.

But if you’re one of the thousands in this state who plays pool in a league or in amateur tourna-ments, then having true professional players visit our area can mean loads.

On January 10 & 11, the Mezz West State Tour will hold a 9-Ball tournament at Bull Shooters in Phoenix. The Bull Shooters tournament will be the only stop in Arizona in the inaugural year of this new tour. The Mezz West State Tour is oper-ated by Oscar Dominguez, a Californian who is not only a professional pool player, but just happens to be so good at his chosen profession that he was selected as a candidate to be on Team USA for 2015 in the Mosconi Cup series.

Joining Oscar in the Phoenix tournament will be his father, Ernesto, who also happens to be a top-flight professional player and turned in a great performance in this year’s U.S. Open 9-Ball Championship. In addition, it is expected that several other players of a professional level will travel from surrounding states to compete in this tournament.

Now on to what this means to our local players:

This tournament is going to give our best locals a chance to test themselves against true profes-sionals in a professional format. No more having to wonder what it would be like to square off against champions in serious competition. The

opportunity is finally com-ing to their doorstep. No huge travel expenses. No huge entry fees. No huge time commitment. All they have to do is pony up $65; set aside one weekend; and they’re in! It doesn’t get any better than that.

But no one has to be left out. Even if your game is not of a level that you feel like you want to enter this tournament, there is still much to gain from it. Like, haven’t you had those times in local tour-naments and league play where you thought you were playing very well but still wondered how your game would compare to that of a professional? Sure you have. We all have. We wonder how a pro plots a run-out versus the way we usually plot it. We wonder when it’s best to play safe rather than go for the run out. We wonder how the pro strokes the ball as compared to the way we stroke it. We wonder how the pro breaks the balls and we wonder what pre-shot routine the pro uses. And we wonder how a pro handles losing as compared to the way we handle it.

Well, your opportunity to answer all those questions, and even more, is on the way. It won’t really cost you anything, either. There is no cover charge. There are no lesson fees. All you have to do is come to Bull Shoot-ers on January 10 & 11 and plop your butt down on one

of the many stools provided there, and then pro-ceed to study the pros.

So, if you’re into pool, this really is a big thing. Don’t miss out on this rare opportunity.

They’re Coming To Phoenix! Will You Be Ready?

(Roger Long Article Contined from page 24)

Did he provide handout materials for them to take home for future refer-ence? Were his rates reasonable for what he taught? The insight you can gain by talking to past students should be the type of “certification” you’re most interested in. Since students have to pay for their lessons, they will have a tendency to be more honest with their true feelings about what they received for their money. On the other hand, a written certificate is, well, just that…a written certificate. The instructor is the one who pays for it, and the issuing party bears no responsibility after its issue. Therefore, a certificate may not carry much meaning.

I’d like to conclude this short series by pointing out that there is a differ-ence between an instructor and a coach. A coach is a person who teaches you what to do, rather than teaching you how to do it. Coaches are great for teaching strategies that they’ve learned from their personal experi-ences. For intermediate and advanced players who already possess good fundamentals and good knowledge of billiard physics, a coach may be a better choice for them. However, confusion exists whenever coaches are advertised as instructors. As I said, there is a difference, but it is up to you, as the consumer, to figure out which is which.

So, identifying a good instructor might sound tricky, but it’s really not. Just remember to first communicate with your prospective instructor to see how he or she is going to communicate with you.

Good luck.
