What is the Integrative Medicine?

Ayurveda

Holisticmedicine

Personalized Allopathic (Western) biomedicine

Yoga Naturopathy

Homeopathy Siddha

AcupunctureChiropractic

Traditional Chinese Medicine

Osteopathy

Anthroposophic medicine

• Integrative medicine aims to practice a new paradigm of medicine – one concentrated on complete restoration of a patient’s health in sustainable and scientific manner.

• It merges allopathic medicine with complementary and alternative medicines.

• Holistic approach also means personalized medicine – fine-tune particular mixture of pharmaceutical products for each individual person.

• Integrative medicine treats the "whole person", focuses on wellness and health rather than on treating disease.

• It is holistic approach that aims to treat the real cause of problem instead of treating symptoms (consequences) only.

China: integration of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and Western medicine

The Chinese integrative health care system was purposively created and promoted by Mao Zedong in 1956:

“to integrate the knowledge of Chinese medicine and materiamedica with the knowledge of Western medicine and pharmacology, to create our unique new medicine and new pharmacology.”

The Model of Integrative Medicine Research Centre

• To conduct clinical trials, registries, comparative effectiveness and clinical

• To conduct basic research in the areas of psychoneuroimmunologyand -endocrinology to further explore and explain the mind-body mechanisms, and lay the foundation for new and improved integrated therapies

• To become knowledge resource and databank on IM-related treatment methods and their safety and efficacy

• Research projects in ayurveda, yoga and other therapies should rely on recruitment via general practitioners and hospital ambulatory care, and via informational material, media and word of mouth

• Multicentric RCT’s in collaboration with the Indian Universities and teaching hospitals.

The third stage envisages to establish a network of clinics (outside

Riga) for longer term treatments.

Additional branch of the project is to develop a pharmaceutical research

that would lead to drug development through utilizing traditional health

systems and reverse pharmacology.

3rd stage

The second stage envisages to create a clinic for consultations in the field of

integrative medicine. This project would build on specialists prepared during the

first state of the project that is still ongoing.

Consultations would be fee based. The current business models of ‘’ARS’’ or

’’Veselības centrs 4’’ could be a proxy.

2nd stage

The first stage of the project started in July 2012. The MOU for research between Dr. V. Pirags Professor and

Head of Internal Medicine at the University of Latvia and the Arya Vaidya Chikitsalayam & Research

Institute (AVCRI) in field of type 2 diabetes mellitus was signed.

The project was further expanded with the MoU between both institutions in the field of educational

programme at the University of Latvia. The programme currently focuses on continuing education in the field of

complementary medicine. 65 students completed the Ayurveda study programme in 2015.
