Good afternoon and welcome to The

Meadow for this league match against Dunstable Town.

Today’s match represents a rare chance for the Ducks to do the double over a rival team – a feat only achieved against Yaxley so far this season – having won the away match 2-1 in November.

Dunstable Town haven’t scored in their past three matches, losing 5-0 away at Thame United last weekend, drawing a blank against Kempston Rovers, an conceding seven with no reply at home to Peterborough Sports.

The Ducks scraped a draw here against Cambridge City last weekend, thanks to Aaron Berry’s 92nd

minute equaliser, but we also have failed to win in the past three league matches, so both sides will be eager for three points from today’s game.

A quick note on the title race. Bromsgrove Sporting overtook Peterborough Sports to claim top spot, with a 2-1 victory over their promotion rivals last Saturday. But

Peterborough are only two points behind with three games in hand. Corby Town are also still in the hunt, a further two points behind. The Ducks have to play all three of these teams in a trio of consecutive fixtures in April before the end of the season.

Up the Ducks!

About Aylesbury United

Aylesbury United was founded in

1897 when three local sides, Night School FC, The Printing Works and Aylesbury Town, decided to merge. The club, nick-named the Ducks, has experienced some incred-ible highs over its 112-year history but are now without a home ground to call their own.

United played in local leagues before joining the Spartan League in 1908 where it remained until the Second World War.

Fame and the FA Cup

Aylesbury turned semi-professional in 1976 and joined the Southern League, kicking off the club’s most successful period. In 1983 the club appointed Trevor Gould as manager, and a year later a local lad called Cliff Hercules made his debut, hanging up his boots some 20-years later smashing club records with 669 appearances and 301 goals.

Promotion to the Southern Premier was

achieved and the Ducks moved to their new Buck-ingham Road stadium. Gould’s talented squad secured the Southern League Championship in 1987-88 and were promoted to the Vauxhall Conference. That year the Ducks became the only ever non-league side to take on the full England team, as more than 6,000 packed into Buckingham Road.

Between 1985 and 1992, Aylesbury boasted the best FA Cup record of any side outside the Football League, reaching at least the first round proper every season. And in 1994-95 the club became famous for the ‘Duck Walk’ celebration as Aylesbury reached the third round, losing to Pre-mier League Queen’s Park Rangers at Loftus Road.

Ups and downs

In 1998-99 the Ducks were pipped to the Isthmian League title by Sutton United and the following season were fighting for survival on and off the pitch.

Despite defeating Foot-ball League side Reading in the Berks and Bucks Senior Cup, for the sec-ond time in four seasons, the club was relegated to Division One for the first time in their history.

But nothing was to match the low point of summer 2006. Former chairman Bill Carroll cut ties with the club he had been involved with since 1997 having failed to convert the Buckingham Road playing surface to a third generation artificial sur-face. Local businessman Graham Read took over the club, but Aylesbury was left homeless after its lease expired.

Since then the Ducks have been forced to play their ‘home’ matches out of Aylesbury while the committee work hard to keep the club alive. The campaign to ‘Bring the Ducks Home’ generated plenty of publicity, but sadly nothing concrete in terms of a new home for the club. In the interim, the teams plays home matches at neighbour Chesham United.

Today’s visitorsThe great escape

towards Southern Premier League safety was nearly secured in the last week of April 2018. The heroics of Dunstable Town’s unpaid players went down to the wire but events saw the relegation trap door open. The Club had gone through the 2017-18 season without a playing budget and without even being able to offer traveling expenses to players and staff.

In May 2017, the Club stood on the verge of folding as the (former) chairman and board resigned their posts believing they had taken the club as far as they could. A group of the club’s fans ook over the reins to save the club from going under. With only enthusiasm and a passion to guide them this disparate group got to grips with the momentous task of running a football club. Tony McCool appointed Gareth Jackson to be his number two, and with support and advice from former Luton and QPR star Kevin Gallen, a squad of hungry

and talented players were assembled from a group of 200 trialists. How many of those players were aware of the club’s history that boasts the presence of both George Best, Jeff Astle and Kerry Dixon as notable former players is not known.

Tony McCool left in January 2019 having gained the reputation as a young manager with a gift for helping young, talented players achieve their potential and encouraging his team to play attacking football. Attractive on the eye and a pleasure to watch, the team was ravaged by injuries and a goalkeeping crisis which meant performances didn’t always get the deserved results. Gareth took over and began his managerial reign with a home win over Bromsgrove Sporting. Gareth is assisted in his duties by development team coaches Colin Lauder and Valentino Qoku.

Despite the disappointment of relegation last season, the

club developed strong links with local schools, particularly Weatherfield Academy, our Community Partner School. The club recently received recognition for it’s off field work through the FA Community Charter Standard Development club award. The move to becoming a members’ run club was rewarded by a doubling of the membership and a 20 per cent rise in home attendances. A huge amount of time went into uniting the three different sections of the club under the DTFC umbrella which is bearing fruit and gives cause for optimism for those who love the club. This season the club has linked up with Mind BLMK (Bedford, Luton, Milton Keynes) to support the invaluable work Mind does in the mental health field. Members of Mind receive free training sessions at the club and discounted admission to home games. There are also collections at selected home games and articles highlighting local Mind groups’ activities published on the website and digital programme.
