What you need to know before you begin

1) Knowthecorrectyear,make,andmodelofyourvehicle.

2) BesurethattheradioyouareinstallingiscompatiblewiththeAxxesssteeringwheelcontrol(ASWC-1)interface(refertotheaftermarketradioowner’smanual).

3) GototheAxxesswebsite(axxessinterfaces.com)andclickonthelinkentitled“ASWC-1VEHICLEINSTRUCTIONS”,whichislocatedontherightsideofthescreeninthemiddle.Onceyouputyourvehicleinformationin,clickthe“SUBMIT”button.Thiswilltakeyoutoanotherpage,whereyouwillthenclickonthelinkundertheword“DOCUMENTS”.Thiswillprovidethevehiclespecificinstructionsforyourvehicle.Printthisdocumentsoyouhaveitwithyouinthevehicleduringtheinstallasitisthebest,andmostrecent sourceofinformation.

Note: Even though we have done extensive research and testing (to verify that the steering wheel control wires we list are correct) it is still your responsibility to verify the steering wheel control wires with a multimeter. If you find a discrepancy please notify our Tech Department at 1-800-253-TECH. Please be in the vehicle when you call, with access to the interface and vehicle wiring.

Section 1: Installation

OnceyouhavecollectedorprintedouttheinformationsheetonyourparticularvehiclefromtheAxxesswebsite(www.axxessinterface.com)you’rereadytoinstalltheASWC-1.

Installing the ASWC-1

1) ConnecttheBlackwireoftheASWC-1toground.Youmayusethesamegroundingpointastheaftermarketradio.

2) ConnecttheRedwireoftheASWC-1toa12-voltaccessorywire, onethatturns“On”and“Off”withtheignitionkey.

3) LocatethecorrectSWCwire(s)inthevehicle’sradioprimaryorsecondaryharnessasdescribedinthevehicleinformationsheetfoundontheAxxesswebsite.Connectthecorrectwirecolor(s)fromtheASWC-1tothesteeringwheelcontrolwire(s)inthevehicle.

Note: Metra recommends that the wire(s) are soldered for the best and most secure connection. T-Taps or scotch locks are not recommended due to the higher chance of an intermitted connection or change in resistive values.

4) IfyouareusinganEclipse,Kenwood,MetraOE,oranewerJVCradio,plugtheincludedfemale3.5mmconnectorwiththeBrownandBrown/Whitewiresintothemale3.5mmconnectoroftheASWC-1harness.

• For Kenwood and select JVC: ConnecttheSWCwire(normallyBlue/Yellow)totheBrownwireoftheASWC-1.IsolateandtapetheBrown/Whitewire,itwillnotbeused.

Note: Some newer Kenwood radios will auto detect as a JVC. If this is the case, you can use a 12k-ohm resistor (included) in line between the Blue/Yellow and Brown wire of the female 3.5mm jack during programming only. Or you can manually set the radio type which is in the radio programming section of this manual.

• For Eclipse:ConnecttheEclipseSWCwires(normallyBrown andBrown/Black)totheBrownandBrown/WhitewiresoftheASWC-1.BrowngoestoBrownandBrown/WhitegoestoBrown/Black.Sometimesthisisreversed,reversethewiresifneeded.

• For Metra OE: ConnecttheSWCKey1wire(Gray)totheBrown wireoftheASWC-1.

5) Forallotherradios,pluginthemale3.5mmconnectoroftheASWC-1intothebackoftheaftermarketradio,designatedforanexternalSWCcontrolinterface.Ifindoubtwherethe3.5mmconnectoroftheASWC-1goespleaserefertotheaftermarketradiomanual.Onceallconnectionshavebeenmade,plugintheaftermarketradioifnotdonealready.

TheASWC-1canbeprogrammedintwoways.(1)ItcandoitbyitselfthroughAutoDetectMode,or(2)itcanbemanuallyprogrammedinnon-datavehicles.ItisstronglyrecommendtostartwiththeAutoDetectModefirst.

Auto Detect Mode: OverviewTheASWC-1hastheabilitytoautodetectcertainvehiclesandtoknowwhataftermarketradioitisconnectedto.ThevehicleinfosheetfromtheAxxesswebsite(www.axxessinterface.com)willindicateifyourvehiclewilllikelybeautodetectedandwhataction,ifany,isrequiredbyyouforthisprocesstotakeplace.

FortheAutoDetectfeaturetoworkthereare3possibleactions,howeveronlyoneactionwillberequiredbyyoudependingonyourvehicle:

• Turntheignitiononandnootheractionisrequired.

• Turntheignitionon,pressandholdthe“VolumeUp”buttononthesteeringwheel.

• Turntheignitionon,pressandreleasethe“VolumeUp”buttonrepeatedlyonthesteeringwheel.

Asstatedbefore,onlyoneoftheseactionswillneedtobedonedependingonyourvehiclefortheAutoDetectfeaturetowork.PleaserefertothevehicleinfosheetprovidedontheAxxesswebsite.

5) AfteracoupleofsecondstheLEDshouldstopflashingandnotlightupfor2seconds.Atthispointdonotpushanybuttons.

6) Afterthe2secondstherewillbeaseriesof7Greenflashes,someshortandsomelong.

7) TheLEDwillpauseforanother2secondsthenflashRedupto11times(refertoASWC-1ledgend).

8) Thisistheendoftheautodetectionstage.IftheASWC-1detectedthevehicleandtheradiosuccessfullytheLEDwilllightupsolid.

9) ForvehicleswithOEBluetoothbuttonspleasepress“Hangup”or“Pickup”onyoursteeringwheelcontrolaftertheLEDontheASWC-1goessolid.IftheOEBluetoothbuttonsareabletobeused,theLEDwillgooutafter3seconds.YourOEBluetoothbuttonsarenowprogrammedtoyouraftermarketradiosBluetoothbuttons(aftermarketradiomusthaveBluetoothcapabilities).

Tip: If the LED does not light up solid refer to the troubleshooting section.

10)Makesurethesteeringwheelcontrolbuttonsfunctioncorrectlyinthevehicleandenjoy.

Auto Detect Mode

SoyoutriedtheautodetectfeatureandattheendtheLEDdidnotstaysolid“red”.Insteaditstartedflashing,meaningthattheASWC-1didnotdetectthevehicle.

Followthesestepstodeterminewhatmayhavehappened:

1) Verifythatyouhave12-voltaccessoryandagoodgroundtotheASWC-1.Sometimesthefactorygroundisnotsufficient,achassisgroundishighlyrecommended.IfyourvehiclehasaSWCreferencegroundwire,chassisgroundthataswell,alongwithyouraftermarketradio.

2) Validateusingthevehicleinformationsheet(Axxesswebsite)thatthecorrectsteeringwheelcontrolwire(s),inthevehicle,wereconnectedtothecorrectwire(s)totheASWC-1.

3) Confirmthatthe3.5mmconnectorisconnectedtoyourradiosecurelyandinthecorrectlocation.

4) Ifusingthefemale3.5mmconnectorinEclipse,Kenwood,selectJVC,orMetraOEradiosverifythattheradio’sSWCwireisconnectedtothecorrectwiretotheASWC-1.

Manual Programming Auto Detect Mode

IfyourvehicleisnotlistedforautodetectionbytheASWC-1ontheAxxesswebsite,www.axxessinterface.com,youcanmanuallyprogramanon-datavehiclebythefollowingsteps(haveASWC-1legendavailable).

Note: Not every radio will have all the possible SWC commands on the steering wheel. Aftermarket radios that do not have Bluetooth will not recognize the PTT (Push To Talk) or “On/Off Hook” commands; however those buttons can be manually programmed to do other commands in some cases. Please refer to the radio owner’s manual or wireless remote for specific commands that the radio will recognize.

1) Completeconnectionstothevehicleandtotheaftermarketradio,makesurethe3.5mmconnectorisconnected.

IfthisisthefirsttimetheASWC-1isbeinginstalledinavehicle:

2) Turntheignitionon;theLEDwillstartflashingrapidly.

3) After10secondstheASWC-1willgointotheLEDfeedbackmode.AftertheseriesofLEDflashestheLEDwillstayinaslowconstantflashstate.Gotostep4.

IftheASWC-1hasbeeninavehiclebefore:

2) Pressandholdtheresetbuttondownformorethen10seconds.

3) Afterthe10secondstheLEDwillbeginaslowconstantflash.

4) Atthispointpressandholdthe“VolumeUp”buttononthesteeringwheelfor7secondsuntiltheLEDgoessolidred.Nowreleasethe“VolumeUp”buttonandtheLEDgoes“Off”.“VolumeUp”hasnowbeenprogrammed.

5) Nowpressandholdthe“VolumeDown”buttonuntiltheLEDgoessolidred.ReleasethebuttonandtheLEDwillturn“Off”.The“VolumeDown”hasnowbeenprogrammed.

6) AtthispointgototheASWC-1LegendButtonAssignment(remapping/manualprogramming)section,page19,andcontinuewith“SeekUp/Next”button.

7) Youcanendthishalfoftheprogrammingin2ways:

(1) Afterthelastbuttononyoursteeringwheelhasbeenprogrammed(youdonothavetogothroughthewholelist)holddownthe“VolumeUp”buttonforatleast 10seconds.TheLEDwillgointoaslowconstantblinkmode.

--- Or ---

(2) Afterthe18thbuttonisprogrammedorskippedtheLEDwillgobacktotheslowconstantblinkmode.

Note: If at any time an error is made hold down the reset button on the ASWC-1 for 10 or more seconds. This will restart the manual programming. Go back to Step 4 and start again.

8) Pressandholdthe“VolumeDown”buttonfor5secondstilltheLEDstartstoflashquickly.

9) Releasethe“VolumeDown”button.

10) After4secondsoftheLEDflashingquicklytheLEDwillgooutfor2seconds.

11) ThentheLEDwillflash,upto11times,dependingonwhatradiotheASWC-1thinksit’sconnectedto.

12) Makesurethenumberofflashesmatchwhatradioyouhaveinstalled.RefertotheChangingRadioTypesection,pages13-14.

13) IftheLEDflashesmatchtheradiothenholddownthe“VolumeDown”buttonuntiltheLEDgoessolidred.

14)Programmingforthevehicleandtheradioisnowcomplete.Testoutthesteeringwheelcontrolfunctionstomakesureitworkscorrectly.

Changing Radio Type

IftheLEDflashesdonotmatchtheradioyouhaveconnected,youmustmanuallyprogramtheASWC-1totellitwhatradioitisconnectedto.

1) Tomanuallyprogramtheaftermarketradio,pressandholdthe“VolumeDown”buttononthesteeringwheelcontroluntiltheLEDgoessolidred,thenrelease“VolumeDown”.

2) AtthispointEclipseisprogrammed.IfyouareusinganEclipseradiogotostep3.Ifyouareusingadifferentradiogotostep4.

3) Pressandhold“VolumeDown”for5seconds.TheLEDwillflashoncethengosolidredindicatingtheprogramminghasfinished.Goenjoyyourradio.

4) IfyouhaveadifferentradiothenEclipse,presstheVolumeUpbuttonagaintilltheLEDgoessolidred,thenrelease“VolumeUp”.YouhavenowprogrammedKenwood.

5) Hereisthecharttoshowhowmanypressesofthe“VolumeUp”buttonisneededforwhichradioyouaretryingtoprogram:

6) Oncetheradiomanufacturerhasbeenselectedhold “VolumeDown”foratleast5seconds.TheLEDwillflashthenumberoftimeswhichradiowasselectedthentheLEDwillremainontoindicatetheASWC-1hasfinishedprogramming.

Manual Radio Type Programming

Ifonlychangingtheradiotypeisneededthenfollowthisprocedurebelow.

1) Withinthefirst25secondsofturningthekeyon,pressandholdthecar’s“VolumeDown”button.

2) After15secondsofholding“VolumeDown”,theASWC-1’sredLEDwillgoon.

4) Pressandreleasethe“VolumeUp”buttonforthedesiredradionumber(pleaserefertotheASWC-1legend).ForeachpresstheredLED.Itwillgo“On”andthen“Off”whenreleasedforfeedback.

5) Whenthedesiredradiotypehasbeenreached,Pressthe“VolumeDown”button.

6) TheLEDwillgoonandwillremainon(approximately3seconds).The ASWC-1 is internally computing and storing this new information.

7) TheLEDwillgo“Off”indicatingitiscompleted.

Note: If at any time the user fails to press any button for a period of 10 seconds or more, this programing mode will abort.

Remapping the SWC (Steering Wheel Control) Buttons

OnceyouhavetheASWC-1programmedyoucanthenchangethesteeringwheelcontrolbuttonassignment(s).Suchas,programingthe“SeekUp”buttonasa“Mute”function.FollowthestepsbelowtoremaptheSWCbuttons:

1) IdeallyhavetheASWC-1visible,soyoucanseetheLEDflashestoconfirmbuttonrecognition.

2) Turning“Off”theradioisrecommended.

3) Withinthefirst20secondsofturningtheignitionon,pressandholddownthe“VolumeUp”buttonforatleast20seconds.

4) TheLEDwilllightupsolidred.Release“VolumeUp”andtheLEDwillgoout.“VolumeUp”hasnowbeenprogrammed.

5) FollowthelistintheButtonAssignmentsection,page19,toreferencetheorderofwhatbuttonsneedtobepressedand/orhowtobypassabutton.

6) Afterthelastbuttonisprogrammedonyoursteeringwheel(youdonothavetogothroughthewholelist),holddownthe“VolumeUp”buttonforatleast10secondsthentheLEDwillgoout.

Resetting Orginal SWC Settings

Ifforanyreasonafterremappingthesteeringwheelcontrolsyouwanttorevertbacktotheoriginalsteeringwheelcontrolsettings,followthesesteps:

1) Withinthefirst20secondsofturningtheignitionon.Pressandholddowntheoriginal“VolumeDown”button(notthe“VolumeDown”buttonyoujustremapped)foratleast25seconds.

2) TheLEDwillturnonthenreleasethe“VolumeDown”buttonandtheLEDwillturn“Off”.

3) Theoriginalsteeringwheelcontrolsettingswillberestored.

If the next function on the list is not on the steering wheel press the “Volume Up” button for 1 second, until the LED comes on, then release the button. This tells the ASWC-1 that the function is not available will move on to the next function.

*Note (section B): If the ASWC-1 flashes 7 times and you do not have an Alpine radio connected to it that means that the ASWC-1 did not see any radio connected. Verify the 3.5mm connector is connected to the SWC input on the radio.

Dual Assignment Instructions

Note: Seek up and Seek down are already set to Preset up and Preset down for long press.

1) Turnontheignitionbutdonotstartthevehicle.

2) Pressandholddownthesteeringwheelbuttonthatyouwanttoassignalongpressfunctionto,forabouttensecondsuntiltheLEDrapidlyflashesgreen.AtthispointreleasethebuttonandtheLEDwillgosolidgreen.

3) PressandreleasetheVOLUMEUPbuttonthenumberoftimescorrespondingtothenewbuttonnumberyouselected(seechartbelow).ThegreenLEDwillblinkrapidlywhentheVOLUMEUPispressedandbacktosolidgreenwhenreleased.(Caution,ifmorethantensecondselapsesbetweenaVOLUMEUPbuttonpress,thisprocedurewillabort,andtheLEDwillgooff).GotothenextstepwhentheVOLUMEUPbuttonhasbeenpressedthedesired numberoftimes.

4) Tostorethelongpressbuttoninmemory,pressthebuttonthatyouassignedalongpressbutton(thebuttonhelddowninstep1).TheLEDwillnowgooffindicatingithasbeenstored.

Note: These steps must be repeated for each button you would like to assign dual purpose action to.

Toresetabuttonbacktoitsoriginaluse,repeatstep1above.ThenpresstheVOLUMEDOWNbutton.TheLEDwillgooffandthelongpressmappingforthebuttonwillbeerased.

3)IralapáginawebdeAxxess(axxessinterfaces.com)yhagaclicenelenlacetitulado“INSTRUCCIONESASWC-1Vehículo”,queseencuentraenelladoderechodelapantallaenelcentro.Unavezqueustedponesuinformacióndelvehículo,hagaclicenelbotón“Enviar”.Estotellevaráaotrapágina,dondesehagaclicenelenlacedebajodelapalabra“documentos”.Estoproporcionarálasinstruccionesespecíficasdelvehículoparasuvehículo.Imprimaestedocumentoparaqueustedtieneconustedenelvehículodurantelainstalación,yaqueeslamejorymásrecientefuentedeinformación.
