Cosa significa per te Fedora, ed il suoriferimento formale alla bambolatradizionale russa che noi conosciamo col nome di matrioska e che tutto il mondoriconosce come tipica del tuo paese?Si tratta di tradizione russa, ma ha una formamolto minimale se confrontata con altreicone della tradizione russa. Inoltre, adifferenza di quello che la maggior partedelle persone pensa della Matrioska, non è così vecchia. Ha la stessa età delcinematografo e l’idea di vari strati che tiportano poi a trovare una bambola all’internoviene dal Giappone. Ma non preoccuparti…Tantissimi russi pensano che la Matrioskaabbia almeno 500 o 1000 anni; divertente, no? Ho parecchie bambole a casa. Ne ho una semplice e dipinta di un solo colore: oro.Nonostante io sia definito “il designer menorusso in Russia”, amo questa forma e pareche sia proprio nel mio DNA. Il nome Fedoraè un vecchio e dimenticato nome russo il cuidiminutivo è Dora. Lo adoro! Era il nomedella mia bisnonna!

Che rapporto hai con la tradizione, e con le forme del passato? Non intendo solo la tradizione Russa, in generale mi riferiscoalle storia delle forme che spesso influenzapiù o meno artisti e designers.Ho un rapporto abbastanza stretto con la tradizione. Sono un grande fan delminimalismo ma allo stesso tempo la miamente è sempre in contrasto a causa di influenze storiche. E non mi riferisco soloallo stile storico russo. FRAME in un suolibro dove si parlava anche del mio design ha scritto:”…forme sensuali…con unasensazione generale di nuovo lusso e di passato che incontra il presente”. Pare io mi stia divertendo con questobellissimo gioco nel design in cui cerco di sposare il moderno alla tradizione.

Negli oggetti che disegni esiste, a mioparere, un legame nascosto col passato che viene trasfigurato dalla naturaleconsapevolezza della tua capacitàcompositiva che è tutta contemporanea.Questo elemento nascosto è letteralmentefuso nelle tue realizzazioni che sono perciòspesso familiari e accattivanti,assolutamente nuove ma con un legamesegreto con la storia delle forme, come se il risultato scaturisse da una alchimia tra il contemporaneo e una “archeologiasognata”, un personale distillato dellastoria, che si condensa in una idea peròsempre nuova. Quale è veramente il tuoprocesso progettuale, il tuo habitusoperativo quando lavori attorno ad una idea, ad un prodotto, e in particolare ad una lampada?Non è strano che oggi in questo progetto io abbia deciso di unire il vecchio al moderno.In generale dipende dalla forma. Lo sai, ho disegnato tanti oggetti ultramoderni ma a volte semplicemente sento che le formeclassiche siano perfette da ridisegnare per farle diventare un prodotto moderno. A volte semplicemente sento che funziona.

Spesso in Europa, il gusto Russo e di buonaparte dell’est Europa viene identificatocome un gusto molto sofisticato, esigente,legato a stilemi storici, opulento, qualchevolta legato a rappresentare degli statussociali piuttosto che a reali esigenzefunzionali e di aderenza allacontemporaneità. Pensi che sia correttaquesta visione? Quanto la cultura locale e nazionale prevalente ti ha influenzato e quanto invece incide la globalizzazione deivalori nel tuo lavoro di designer? Cosa nepensi dell’approccio “glocal” nel campo deldesign? Quando disegni un prodotto ti sentiobbligato a rispettare un gusto prevalenteper assecondare un mercato o seguiliberamente il tuo istinto ed il tuo stile? Molte persone mi hanno chiesto del “gustorusso” ma davvero non ho saputo aiutarli.Non ho la minima idea di cosa succeda in questo campo. Probabilmente è per questoche non ho ancora disegnato per nessunaAzienda russa. Certamente ci sono differenzecon il resto del mondo. Nuovo denaro, nuovopotere, nuove modalità di espressione… i ricchi spesso sembrano strani ma quelloche ho notato è che imparano velocemente e stanno cambiando. Puoi facilmente trovareresidenze assolutamente moderne, semplicie lussuose così come abitazioni moderne in periferia per la classe media. E fortunatamente quello che ho riscontratonon ha una connotazione particolarmente“tradizionale”. Per quanto mi riguarda iniziola giornata con una tazza di caffè e i blog di design. Guardo molto tutto quello cheriguarda il design e non perché devo maperché questa è la mia passione, è partedella mia vita. Il mercato locale non miinfluenza, il mondo del design sì.

Come non mai per la cultura Russa la luce è un elemento metafisico, e la pittura diicone che ci svela Pavel Florenskij ne è laprova più consistente. In questa prospettivaculturale, progettare la luce comportaqualche riflessione in più? Hai unaparticolare predisposizione al progetto di lampade o per te è indifferente disegnareuna sedia, un tavolo, piuttosto che unalampada?Disegnare lampade è uno degli aspetti delmio lavoro che preferisco. L’idea include cosìtante sfaccettature…: forma ed estetica, laluce, i raggi luminosi, le ombre. E tutti sidimenticano dell’oscurità; con un gestoillumini l’oscurità. Quale altro prodotto di design può farlo? Ovviamente però nondisegno solo lampade. Per esempio,attualmente sto lavorando su un sistemaacustico innovativo.

Facciamo un gioco! Io elenco una coppia di parole, non necessariamente opposte o perfettamente dialoganti fra loro, e tu, se vuoi, fai un breve commento, o miracconti un aneddoto, o fai una riflessione. Il gioco serve per permetterci di capire ilvalore delle parole e cosa innescano in noi,a seconda della cultura di appartenenza edelle esperienze che abbiamo avuto. Usa se vuoi anche l’ironia:

What does Fedora mean to you? And whatabout its formal reference to the traditionalRussian doll we know as matryoshka andwhich the whole world typically associatesto your country?It’s traditional Russian, but it has the mostminimal shape comparing with other Russianicons. Besides, despite what many people arethinking about Matryoshka - it’s not too old. In fact it’s the same age as cinematograph.And the idea of many layers when you mayfind one doll inside another came from Japan.But don’t worry! Many Russians are thinkingthat Matryoshka is 500 or 1000 years old.That’s funny! I have several dolls at my home.It’s simple and painted just in one bold color -gold. Despite people called me “the lessRussian designer in Russia”, I love this shapeand it seems it’s in my DNA. The name Fedorais the old and forgotten Russian name. Andthe short name is Dora. I just love it! That was the name of my great-grandmother.

How close are you to tradition and to shapesfrom the past? In other words, not onlyRussian tradition but I mean the history ofshapes which often somehow influenceartists and designers.Quite close. I am a big fan of minimalism. But same time I always have this contrast inmy mind - historical influence. And I mean notonly Russian historical styles. FRAME wroteabout my design in their book “…sensuousforms… with an overall feeling of nouveauluxury and past meets present”. It seems I amplaying a wonderful game in design when I amtrying to marriage modern and traditional.

I think the objects you design have a hiddenconnection with the past which istransfigured by your natural awareness ofyour contemporary creative talent. This hidden element is literally melted inyour works which are therefore oftenfamiliar and appealing, brand-new but witha secret connection with the history ofshapes; it looks as if the result arose froman alchemy between contemporary art and a “dream archaeology”, a personal essenceof history which every time turns into a newidea. How do you actually work on a project,I mean what are you used to doing when youwork around an idea, a product and inparticular a lamp?It’s not like you decide to connect modernand old in a new project. It depends on theshape in general. You know I have manyultramodern things, but sometimes I just feelthat this classical shape will be great toredesign and turn into the modern product.Sometimes I just feel that it works.

In Europe the Russian as well as theEastern European taste is often identifiedwith a very sophisticated, demanding,historic, classy and fancy style meant toenhance a social status rather than to meetan actual contemporary need. Do you agreewith this view? How much has thepredominant local and national cultureinfluenced you? How much has theglobalization of values “shaped” your job asa designer? What do you think about the“glocal” approach in the design industry?When you design a product, do you feel youhave to follow a main taste to go along witha market or do you freely follow yourinstinct as well as your style?Many people asked me about «Russiantaste». But I can’t help them. I just don’t knowwhat’s going on in that field. Maybe that’s whyI haven’t designed for any Russian companyyet. Of course, there is the different with otherworld. The new money, new power, new waysof expression. Rich people often looksstrange, but what I noticed - they learned fastand they are changing. You can easily findabsolutely modern, simple and expensiveresidences as well as modern townhouses in suburbs for middle class. And what I sawdoesn’t looks like too «traditional» luckily. As for me I start my day with a cup ofespresso and design blogs. I am checking a lot of design content, but not because I haveto. That’s my passion, that’s a part of my life.Local market doesn’t influenced on me at all,the world design does.

Now, more than ever, light is a metaphysicalelement for the Russian culture and the icon paintings revealed by Pavel Florenskijare the most significant pieces of evidence. In this cultural perspective, is there morereflection when it comes to designing light?Are you particularly keen on designinglamps or do you indifferently design a chair, a table rather than a lamp?Designing lamps is one of my favorite part of my work. It has so many layers inside of the idea. Shape and esthetic, the light, the light rays, the shadows. And peoplealways forget about the darkness. In one turn you light up the darkness. Which otherpiece of design can do that? But of courseI design not just the lightings. For examplenow I am working on innovative hi-endacoustic systems.
