This biweekly ritual of the Fall may not only be the greatest out-door party in the country, but it also best represents a culmina-tion of all the things to be thankful for in our fair city. The beau-tiful people, immaculate weather, essentially open bar... or tent, and a communal spirit unrivaled. Now if only the tailgate would migrate into the stadium to help celebrate the Knights migration to the Big East. Check out our short list of things to be thankful for in Orlando, and feel free to send us your favorites to [email protected]!

The other night, as I settled into the butt groove I have so delightfully created over the last several seasons as an Orlando Magic season ticket holder, I came to a harsh realization. As I stared out on to the court at the Amway Center, I asked myself, “Hey handsome, who are these strange new people wearing Orlando uniforms?” And then it struck me, as if waking from a coma brought on by months of overdone sports news rhetoric – we have entered the era of beyond he who shall never again be named. Thus, we introduce ourselves to the new names and faces who came over in the blockbuster trade that sent He Who Shall Be Known Only As Assface Buttmunch (Dwight Howard, in case you’re having trouble following along) to the L.A. Lakers, and what better time to do so than with our Pulitzer- and Peabody-winning 101 Things to be Thankful for? Correct, there is no better time. Well, there is, but it involves me, a hot tub, Luther Vandross’ greatest hits, a case of Dom and the entire Magic Dancer squad, but according to an email from the Magic’s media relations: “Stop it. Never. Seriously. Stop asking.” So you’ll have to settle for these 10 Magic players and personnel to be thankful for.

Rob Hennigan – He’s just 31 years of age, which makes him younger than me, and I’m not resentful about that all. Sure, I’ve been a season ticket holder for longer than he’s been a General Manager, and I’ve been a fan of the team for more years than he’s been out of college. And while very few people on this planet know more about what it takes to build a championship NBA team than I do, I guess I’m willing to put my faith in Ol’ Robby Boy, because I already like what he’s done in the wake of Assface Buttmunch. But that only stands if he agrees to be my best friend. I’ll assume he has already said yes.

Jacque Vaughn – Another nOOb, as the cool Internet kids say, Vaughn turned a lot of heads when he was hired as the Magic’s replacement for my former best friend, Stan Van Gundy. People were all like, “Whaaaaaaaa?” And Robby and the ‘Gic were all like, “Damn straight.” From eve-rything I’ve read about Vaughn, he was born to coach a pro team, so I’ll trust him. But I’m keeping my eye on him. Not because he’s new, but because his name is French. No surrender.

Arron Afflalo – So what about the new guys who are actually playing for us? The first guy you need to know is Arron Afflalo, because his name is very difficult for me to pronounce sometimes, and I end up saying things like Alfalfa and Affalaffalo and Smith, because I get tired of trying. But he also might be the first great SG that this team has had in years. You know, the kind that we needed when Assface Buttmunch was here.

Andrew Nicholson – I’d say that Afflalo has the most potential of the new players the Magic acquired, but Andy Nicholson is definitely the guy that I’m most excited about, when it comes to watching him grow into an NBA quality player. For the people who were pissed about trading off Ryan Anderson, I like to think that Nicholson is the cheaper replacement with a higher ceiling. (I still miss you, Ryno.)

Moe Harkless – Harkless is regarded as a raw, young talent with a ton of potential, so when people were crying that the Magic didn’t get any good draft picks, this kid was sort of like an extra draft pick, because he’s still a work in progress. A lot of analysts expect him to be awesome, which is good because Otis Smith collected young talent like Assface Buttmunch kept promises.

Nikola Vucevic – Now that Assface Buttmunch is gone, Nikola figures to be part of a young, rotating group of big men. But none of that matters, because I’m excited about yelling “NII-IIIIIIIIKOLAAAAA!” like those old Ricola commercials.

Kyle O’Quinn – If you’re a big college basketball fan like I am, you’re probably already fa-miliar with O’Quinn, as his Norfolk State team became quite the Cinderella story last year. He’s a passionate big man who could be a quality big man in the NBA. Analysts called him a steal, and I hope they’re right because I can’t take any more letdowns.

Glen Davis – We all know Big Baby already, but now that he’s the veteran leadership of this team, I thought we could pretend like this is his first season. You know, start over and forget last season’s sloppy long jumpers and sliding on the court. Please, God. Let me forget.

DeQuan Jones – He’s the feel-good story for this team. He’s the kid who busted his ass to make the opening day roster and he’s the reason that the Magic were willing to eat $4.5 million to send Quentin Richardson packing. DeQuan is a hero just for that.

Magic Dancer Nicole – Hey Nicole, what’s up? Section 110, stop by and say hi sometime. 21

THE T-DAY STUFFING!Looking to fill up on the good stuff on TDay, what brews would you suggest that could be a meal unto themselves?

Dopplebocks are historically called ‘liquid bread’. This is because monks fasted during the Lenten season and only drank these malty, higher alcohol beers. They were required to fast for different bouts at a time, the longest being Lent, so they would make plenty of this liquid rather than bread. At more than 7% ABV, no wonder it was called liquid bread!

What about some flavorful brews that would go alongside a total pigout session?

For your traditional turkey, I would suggest an amber ale like an Oktoberfest, a brown ale like Brooklyn Brown, or a strong golden ale like Chimay White. And for dessert, pumpkin pie, I’d suggest a spiced ale like Samuel Adams Imperial White, or a winter warmer like Anderson Valley Winter Solstice.

After a night of craziness with the family and friends, what’s a nice hair of the dog

brew for the TDay hangover?Three beers that I would recommend for the day after a hangover are Reigl Shandy, Leinenkrugel Summer Shandy, and the Curious Traveler House of Shandy. These are all Shandy or shandygaff beers. They are lower in alcohol and they are beers that are mixed with citrus-flavored soda, car-bonated lemonade, ginger beer, ginger ale, or cider; making them very easy and enjoyable to drink the day after.

Everyone likes their Turkey shots, what’s a good ‘shooter’ brew?

For those that want something lighter and sweet, I’d sug-gest a Dirty Hoe. This is a mixture of Hoegaarden, a white wheat, and St. Louis Framboise, a raspberry lambic. For people that want something higher octane, I’d say a 12/90. This is St. Bernardus ABT 12, a Belgian Quad, and Dogfish Head 90 Minute, a double IPA. Lastly, if you want to go the traditional route, get an Irish Car Bomb. Since we don’t have liquor, we substitute the Bailey’s and Jameson with Whipped ChocoVino with Guinness. All great shots!

aXis thoughts #9: “Does your workout make you nervous?…It should!” 27

aXismag.com • November 2012

aXis: After reading about your diet, some people argue that how you’re eating is not healthy?Jamie: It’s valid. When they challenge me, it actually gives me an opportunity to explain that what we’re doing is to an excessive or extreme level because we’re trying to achieve a specific look. There’s a dif-ference between eating to be healthy and eating to be lean.

aXis: Why do you say to avoid chemicals and arti-ficial foods, but you yourself use Splenda?Jamie: Splenda, unfortunately, is one of the only op-tions out there that doesn’t add carbs. Truthfully, we watch every single thing that we put in our mouth and I just can’t eat all the natural sweeteners when I’m trying to get lean. A packet of Truvia or xylitol, which is what I typically use when I’m not trying to lean out, is three carbs for one little packet. So you put that in a recipe in cup sizes and you’re adding a considerable amount of carbs to something that’s already got a high amount of carbs.

aXis: Anyone who says to avoid eating certain kinds of fruit always raise some questions?Jamie: Fruit’s amazing for you but it’ll spike your blood sugar even though its fructose and natural sugar. If your goal is just to be the same shape you were before and just a smaller version of yourself, by all means eat fruit – it’s a great low calorie snack. But if your goal is to actually become lean and toned, you cannot eat fruit all day long, so you want to choose fruits that are a little bit lower glycemic so that they don’t spike your blood sugar.

aXis: Why can’t you just eat what you want and then workout to burn off the extra calories?Jamie: One of the biggest myths I hate because I hear it all the time and I cringe every time is – all it is is calories in versus calories out – there could be noth-ing further from the truth. If that were the case, I could eat two pieces of cheesecake for my food for the day and because I exercise and stay under my calorie requirements, suddenly I’m in shape. That’s not the case at all. Macronutrients – the proteins, the carbs, the healthy fats – those things matter. The type of food you’re eating matters. There are certain things that you need and when we eat all this junk, it’s like putting bad gas in a car – it’s going to run, but over time you’re just breaking down your body. You’re wearing it out.

ADVICE FROM Andres D’Antoni3rd yearMedical Student

Q: Is it just me, or does anyone else feel sleepy after Thanksgiving meal? Right when I ease into that lazyboy to watch the big game I’ve caught myself nodding off? I’ve heard people say it’s the Turkey, is that true?A: Actually, there is some truth to that. Turkey contains Tryptophan, an Essential Amino Acid that we obtain as part of our diet. One of Tryptophan’s functions is as a precursor to Serotonin, a neurotrans-mitter that helps regulate sleep. Tryp-tophan is also found in many other foods we eat like chicken, tuna, salmon, & soy beans to name a few. But here’s the kick-er, its effects are usually enhanced when combined with a carbohydrate rich meal ie. Thanksgiving. The other factor that can’t be overlooked, is that we usually end up stuffing our faces; this slows our digestion and redirects the blood flow away from other organ systems to our gut; leaving us kicked back in the recliner. So in this case it is a quality and quan-tity issue, because the food is so good and we usually go for seconds and maybe thirds for the big boys. Happy Thanksgiving!

OK, so we know you are going to pig out this Thanksgiving, and you deserve it... no really! So if you are going to shovel it down, then you might as well wash it down with something tasty, yet light. Pinnacle vodka may not be known for being low cal, but properly mixed it can be less risky than most cocktails. check out the ‘creamsicle!’ There’s probably a sim-ilar Creamsi-cle recipe on the Pinnacle Vodka website, but here’s how I make mine: pour approxi-mately 1-2 shots of Pin-nacle Whipped vodka over ice and then fill the glass with seltzer and a splash of or-ange juice.
