There was a Dr. Who episode in the Tom Baker era where the crew of a crashed spaceship was always repeating “The Quest is the Quest”. [Dr. Who, for those of you who don’t know, is a British sci fi television series that debuted the year I was born. When the lead actor changes, the Doctor “regenerates” and there are cult followings for the various doctors. Tom Baker was my first and as the old saying goes, you never forget your first.] Turns out, the ship was perfectly fine to fly and they’d just forgotten what the purpose was beyond their daily tasks. But they went through those tasks with alacrity. Recently on a new tv series Heroes Reborn, one of the lines was, “If the quest wasn’t hard, it wouldn’t be heroic.” It made me remember the old Dr. Who line. So why do we do it? And should we continue to do it, or shift our focus to something else?

As a small business owner, this is a necessary question to ponder often. Do you double down when times are challenging? Or do you take Kevin O'Leary's [of Shark Tank fame] advice and never “throw” “good” money after “bad” into the place where "money goes to die." I've left the steel and metals industry more than once in my career and yet somehow have always been drawn back in. Arguably we’re in one of those dark times where it's hard to be optimistic about the future. Is this just an abnormally brutal down cycle or has there been a structural shift in the industry with the massive global overcapacity (in steelmaking) that will make “winning” impossible for the foreseeable future?

There aren’t any easy answers. I made my bet by starting a firm targeting the steel industry in the face of overwhelming odds and accepting the nomination to the 4-year term of vice presidency to the presidency of the NY AWMI chapter in 2012.

We, the AWMI NY Chapter Board, are thrilled to report that despite the difficult industry environment this year, the chapter reached 104% of its membership goal and after many years of underperformance, is once again in compliance with its charter. Over

the past four years, the board has worked diligently to regain a solid financial footing and now has begun to look at how the chapter can “give back” to its members and the metals community in the northeast region. We thank all of you for your continued support and look forward to incorporating your innovative ideas into the governance and purpose of the chapter. We couldn’t have done it without you.

The association is 100% volunteer managed and we need you to get involved. Please ask one of us about areas that would be of interest or would help you gain skills that would be useful to

the progression of your career. We’re Here For You.

A woman bends over me, Searching my reaches for what she really is. Then she turns to those liars, the candles or the moon. I see her back, and reflect it faithfully. She rewards me with tears and an agitation of hands. I am important to her. She comes and goes. Each morning it is her face that replaces the darkness. In me she has drowned a young girl,

and in me an old woman rises toward her day after day, like a terrible fish.
