BRIAN LUKAS TO RECEIVE THE GOLD CIRCLE AWARDAT THE 2018 SUNCOAST REGIONAL EMMY AWARDS GALA

Brian Lukas is Chief Photographer at WWL-TV in New Orleans. He will be honored with the Gold Circle Award at this year’s Regional Emmy® Awards gala on December 1, 2018 at the Hyatt Regency in Orlando. The Gold Circle Award recognizes individuals who have worked with distinction in the television industry within the Suncoast region of the State of Florida, the State of Louisiana, the Mobile, Alabama – Pensacola, Florida television market and/or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico for fifty years or more.

In 2005 some of the first images broadcast nationwide of Hurricane Katrinaand its destruction of New Orleans and the Gulf Coast was shot and transmitted via satellite by Brian as he documented one of America’s most tragic events.

In 2010 Brian covered the tragic story of the Deep Water Horizon — one of the worst environmental disasters in the United States and the largest oil spill in history.

In 1967 Brian began his career in television immediately out of high school. At the age of 17 he started working in the business office, then the newsroom of local television station WVUE-TV in New Orleans. While attending college during the day, he worked in the evening answering viewers calls into the newsroom as a desk assistant, and then, film editor. In the early ‘70’s Brian became film and quality control supervisor over the 16mm film medium used as a visual broadcast imagery for newscasts.

After 13 years at WVUE-TV Brian joined WWL-TV in 1980 as special projects photographer and editor producing documentaries and special events in New Orleans, around the nation and overseas. In 1990 Brian joined an independent company producing television documentaries in Asia, Australia and in the United States, then in 1995, returned to WWL-TV in New Orleans where he is currently employed.

Brian has received multiple Emmy® Awards, in addition to numerous other awards from the Associated Press, United Press International and he hasdominated the New Orleans Press Club Awards, winning the first Presidents Award as Photographer of the Year, and then winning the award seven other times for an unprecedented eight years.

We congratulate Brian on his illustrious career and his many contributions to the broadcast industry.

SUNCOAST CHAPTER DONATES $10,000 IN HURRICANE RELIEFTO CASA DE TODOS IN JUNCOS, PUERTO RICO

HYATT REGENCY ORLANDO HOSTS THIS YEAR’S SUNCOAST REGIONAL EMMY® AWARDS

The Hyatt Regency Orlando is the host for this year’s Suncoast Regional Emmy® Awards which will be held on Saturday, December 1, 2018. The hotel’s centralized location means you’re only 12 miles from Orlando International Airport and, another key feature — the area’s major theme parks are only a few minutes away. There are seven different dining experiences at the hotel including Urban Tide, Fiorenzo Italian Steakhouse, the 24-hour B-Line Diner and the Market to name a few. Stay tuned to the chapter’s website for more details.

Earlier this year, the Suncoast Chapter made a $10,000 charitable donation to Casa de Todos in Juncos, Puerto Rico. Managed by Executive Director Sister Carmen Carmona, Casa de Todos opened its doors in 1980 and has since offered shelter and protection to abused children and battered women. Comprised of three buildings, Casa de Todos suffered great structural damage during Hurricane Maria which devastated the island during the 2017 hurricane season. The much needed donation will help in the rebuilding efforts which will include a computer lab and a therapy center. Sister Carmen says this donation is an answer to her prayers. The Suncoast Chapter wishes to thank Jose Cancela, President and General Manager, Telemundo Puerto Rico and his staff for helping to identify the organization and assisting in the check presentation.
