Holocaust Memorial Day
The Learning Centre and RS Department joined together to give students an
insight into the Holocaust, and the importance of Holocaust Memorial Day
27/1, through a week long exhibition. Students visiting learnt about
communities and individuals whose actions impacted upon the fate of those
caught in the Holocaust. The students reflected on who made the Holocaust
possible, questions of good and evil and collective and personal responsibility
and morality.
Darcy Yr8 “It must have been traumatic and heart-breaking… I think it was
important for us to learn about the Holocaust, because now we know what
happened.”
Abir Yr8 “I learnt that Nazis did not just kill Jews, they killed different races and
because of skin colour.”
Rhea Yr8 “We learnt how it felt to be trapped in the trucks they used to
transport people. It felt claustrophobic – I can’t image what it felt like for real!”
Molly Yr9 “A story that shocked me was of Dr Victor Capesius, he chose who
would be worked to death in the concentration camp of Auschwitz-Birkenau
and who would be going to the gas chambers. He went from helping people to
killing them.”
Tom Yr8 “In my opinion Irene Sendler stood out because she saved 2,500
Jewish children and was tortured.”

Exciting Changes To Your PTA 200 Club – Lucky Lotto!
We’re making some changes to the Thamesmead 200 Club which will benefit
both the school - through increased funds raised - and you, our members with
bigger monthly draw prizes!
Starting with this month’s draw, we are now going to use 60% of an increased
£15 subscription for the 200 Club cash prizes and 40% will go into the PTA fund
to be used directly for the benefit of our children at Thamesmead. The regular
monthly prizes for 200 Club Lucky Lotto members will increase from £12.50
and £7.50 to £25 and £15 respectively starting with the draw in February 2015
and we have moved the ‘Jackpot Draw’ to July 2015 - just in time for the
Summer Holidays! First place winner will win £200 and second place winner
will receive £75. Overall it’s a huge increase in prizes funds going to you – the
members! Join up now and you could be in with a chance of winning the
March draw!!!
Existing members who have paid £12 for their year will be entered into the
new prize draws automatically and can pay the new £15 annual entry when

the PTA fundraising and be in with a chance of winning cash in the next prize
draw.
PTA contributions are becoming more and more essential to providing items

Inter-House Competition Bake-Off Result
Wow, what an event and thank you SO much for all the staff support we have
had with this. The last two weeks have been extremely exciting for the House
Team and all the competitors. 12 participants made it through the tough
ordeal of making a whole cake for the final! The judgement (overseen by Mrs
Eley) was thorough and fair (of course) and the crowned champs were Meg
Matthews (KS3) and Lisa Kent (KS4).
Curriculum Enrichment
We are unable to make any more changes to the curriculum enrichment
options. Most trips are now available to pay for on Tucasi and please note we
do not accept credit card payments, only debit cards.
Readathon Roundup
We would like to thank all those who took part in our first ever Readathon last
term. Together we raised a staggering £2,007.77 in sponsor money which has
been divided between the four house charities.
Books of the Week
KS3- The Baking life of Amelie Day by Vanessa Curtis
Amelie Day loves to bake - cupcakes, biscuits, bread, tarts and muffins - so
she's thrilled when she's invited to compete in Britain's Best Teen Baker of the
Year. But Amelie has Cystic Fibrosis and some days she can barely breathe.
Determined not to let her condition, or her mum, stop her, Amelie musters all
her flour power, but will it be enough to get her there?
Though Amelie’s eyes, her sense of humour and love of baking, we glimpse just
enough of the darker side of living with a serious disability to really connect
with her character. We also get some of her great recipes as well! This is a
fantastic book, brimming with emotion and heart.
KS4 - Asylum by Madeleine Roux
Sixteen-year-old Dan Crawford spends the summer at prep school – boarding
in a dormitory that used to be an asylum. We’ve all seen enough horror
movies to know that this is never a good idea! He soon befriends Abby and
Jordan, and they find themselves exploring places that are “off limits”. Bizarre
notes begin to appear. Tension builds. And as they explore what it all means
they begin to question who they are, where they come from, and whether or
not they were brought to the Asylum by chance.
The clever use of illustrations from actual asylums adds immeasurably, bringing
the visually creepy element of ‘found footage’ to heighten the disturbing
atmosphere. While not the most brutal horror story, this creepy psychological
horror is definitely not for the faint-hearted!
