Award-Winning Organometallic Chemistry: The 2012 ACSAward in Organometallic Chemistry
In this issue, we again recognize a recent recipient of the ACSAward in Organometallic Chemistry, which can be considered
the namesake award of this journal.1,2 The honoree, ProfessorPhilip P. Power of the University of California, Davis, waspresented with the prize following a banquet held at the SanDiego ACS meeting on March 27, 2012. As shown in Figure 1,the award consists of a framed certificate, as well as a $5000grant. The sponsor of the award, the Dow Chemical CompanyFoundation, was represented at the ceremony by Dr. James C.Stevens, someone withmany accomplishments in organometallicchemistry in his own right.Professor Power is well-known for his decades of trailblazing
research in main-group organometallic chemistry, and hislaudatio reads as follows: “For recent achievements in organo-metallic chemistry: extending our knowledge to new classes ofcompounds and demonstrating that these unusual compoundshave remarkable reactivity with important small molecules”.A brief biography of Professor Power, who hails from Irelandand has spent his entire scientific career at the Universityof California, Davis, can be found in the award article thatfollows.Phil, please accept our congratulations for your numerous
accomplishments that served as the basis for this award, as well asthe significant portion of your oeuvre that has greatly impactedmodern inorganic chemistry. You have taught us much aboutbonding and discovered several unexpected reactivity modes thatcould only have been dreamed about without the unusualmolecules synthesized by you and your co-workers. We look
forward to your continued scientific leadership and many futurethought-provoking papers from your laboratory.
