DESCRIPTION

Potassium is a mineral that controls nerve and muscle function. Potassium comes from the foods we eat. Healthy kidneys remove excess potassium in the urine to help maintain normal levels in the blood. When kidneys fail they can no longer remove excess potassium, so the level builds up in the body. High potassium in the blood is called hyperkalemia, which may occur in people with advanced stages of chronic kidney disease (CKD). Some of the effects of high potassium are nausea, weakness, numbness and slow pulse.

People often do not feel any difference when their potassium is high.

Your health care provider will check the level of potassium in your blood and the medicines you take.

The level of potassium in your blood should be between 3.5 to 5.0.

Eat smaller portions of foods high in protein at meals and for snacks: meat, poultry, fish, beans, dairy, and nuts.

Use spices and herbs in cooking and at the table.

Salt substitutes often contain potassium and should not be used.

Potassium chloride can be used in place of salt in some packaged foods, like canned soups and tomato products.

Limit foods with potassium chloride on the ingredient list.

HOW TO LEACH VEGETABLES?

For Potatoes, Sweet Potatoes, Carrots, Beets, Winter Squash, and Rutabagas:-

Peel and place the vegetable in cold water so they won’t darken.

Slice vegetable 1/8 inch thick.

Rinse in warm water for a few seconds.

Soak for a minimum of two hours in warm water, use ten times the amount of water to the amount of vegetables, if soaking longer, change the water every four hours.

Rinse under warm water again for a few seconds.
