The 2013 Donor Recognition Reception Honors Generosity

It all started with a gift from Helen McKennan. Thanks to loyal donors, community partners and friends like you, that gift has grown and continues to make a difference in our community. The Avera McKennan Foundation is fortunate to be part of the generosity to further the mission of delivering quality health care guided by Christian values.

This year, key donors, business partners and volunteers attended a Donor Recognition Reception on Nov. 14, 2013, at the Washington Pavilion. To all past, present and future supporters, thank you for supporting our mission and special thanks to our 2013 award recipients.

Simply bring your mobile phone to the event and conveniently enjoy your evening dining and sipping while keeping an eye on your auction item. For those who cannot attend, the show must go on. But thanks to text to Bid, you can still take part in the silent auction from the comfort of home. For more information, visit TheBigGrape.org.

The Big Grape: Next Generation is setting the stage for another magical and magnificent evening of fine wine, craft beer, gourmet food and an exclusive silent auction, all to support the health of children in our community. But you won’t want to wait – tickets vanish quickly. Visit TheBigGrape.org today to order your tickets and get a sneak peek of silent auction items, featured wineries and menu items.

Approximately 60 percent of breast cancer patients in this area choose the Avera Cancer Institute for their care. From enhanced programs to state-of-the-art equipment, Avera remains dedicated to cancer care. Recently, an 11-member breast cancer research team, led by Dr. Brian Leyland-Jones, has joined Avera and credits our mission as a key factor for the move.

Dr. Leyland-Jones oversees genome sequencing, which personalizes chemotherapy for breast cancer patients. He feels confident the field will find a cure within the next five to six years based on this level of research.

“We were attracted by Avera’s mission,

its culture. My team is compassionate and

I too have deep religious beliefs. We’ve

very much loved the

concept of delivering

quality service guided by

Christian values.”

Welcome

But they don’t fight alone. Thanks to you and support from fellow participants, volunteers and community partners, the Avera Race continues to grow. Each year, numbers climb, raising awareness and dollars to find a cure. Join us in welcoming the latest group of ladies and add to their strength by joining them on May 10 as we all take on breast cancer at the Avera Race.

And in this corner, we have the Avera Think Pink Ladies! Thank you to these brave women for graciously volunteering their time to become the newest faces and voices of breast cancer awareness for the Avera Race.

’ve been a breast cancer survivor for the past 27 years. On the anniversary of my diagnosis, I was very emotional as I thought back to the day I received the news. Even though I had the best care available at that time, it was still devastating. Thankfully, I’m here today to tell the story. As a testament to all breast cancer survivors, my sister Peggy Kirby and the Junior League planned the first Race Against Breast Cancer in my honor over 25 years ago. It started out small, but over the years, I’ve watched the race grow and make a profound impact in the community.

It just so happened that on that very day, I attended a board meeting for the Avera McKennan Foundation. We toured the new genetics lab and received the news of the world-class team of breast cancer researchers who had recently joined Avera.

I was overwhelmed with joy. Just think, on that very day 27 years ago, I received very grim news. Today, we’re taking cancer research to a whole new level. I’m proud at how far we’ve come in treating breast cancer and the hope this gives to women diagnosed today. Thank you to all who have supported the Avera Race and cancer care at Avera.”

A warm bed, hot cup of coffee, the colorful outdoor gardens

bathed in sunlight. These are all part of the quality care and

service for patients and families at the Dougherty Hospice

House. When you make a gift to support a hospice endowment,

you are investing in the comfort and care for your loved ones,

family, friends and people right here in our community.

Caring for Community through Assurance “The Dougherty Hospice House and

Home Hospice continue to take the lead in providing the highest quality hospice care for those in need. Our interdisciplinary team is humbled to walk this sacred path with those who are transitioning from this world to the next. Thanks again for saying yes to being our partners in this loving ministry.”

The End of the Journey is Only the Beginning

the dougherty hospice house opened its doors in 2007 and today, we continue to serve patients and families in our community who are in need of expert end-of-life care. Warm surroundings, highly trained, caring hospice staff and family-friendly rooms create a place for families to be together comfortably during their final journey. all this has been made possible through the generosity of partners like you. We deeply appreciate your past and ongoing support of our hospice ministry.

as health care reimbursements continue to decline and our deep commitment to excellence in hospice stands firm, we recognize the ongoing need to grow our endowment. the dougherty hospice house has been a blessing to so many patients and families. unfortunately, there are often no rooms available to patients and families at a very vulnerable time. We continue to plan for future growth to meet the needs of our community while the current focus is growing the endowment to support operations now and in the future.

“Happiness is not measured by the assets one gathers but rather by the peace and joy one receives from one’s Faith, from a career one enjoys, and from loved ones.

I’ve had a full and exciting life blessed with a loving husband, family and friends. I’m thankful to God for all my blessings and for all the good memories they provided.”
