WatchA Million Ways to Die in the West All you Seth MacFarlane fans are in for a treat. The Family Guy creator has taken his unique style of comedy in his first starring role in a live-action film. The multi-talented MacFarlane made this film his baby, as he is the producer, writer, director, and star. Co-starring Charlize Theron, here is an entertaining take on a Western. As expected, there is plenty of humour and a fair amount of physical comedy. At certain points, it feels as if you’re watching an episode of one of the animated episodes from his genius.

Without giving too much away, the story is about Albert who breaks up with this girlfriend Louise (Amanda Seyfriend), and is on a mission to get her back by making her jealous. In comes Anna (Theron), who assists Albert in winning her back. While MacFarlane’s humour may not be everyone’s cup of tea, he’s managed to haul in Liam Neeson, Giovanni Ribisi, and Neil Patrick Harris. The cast may be tempting enough for you to spend an hour and 45 minutes for this kooky wild west tale.

SeePenny DreadfulThe trend of binge watching won’t let up and it seems this show can be added to your list. Eva Green, Josh Hartnett, and Timothy Dalton have found themselves, like many other movie stars, on the small screen. The Showtime original is a horror show that mixes in plenty of scary classics we’ve come to know, bringing back memorable characters. The audience meets Ethan Chandler (Hartnett), who is an excellent marksman, and is enlisted by the mysterious clairvoyant Vanessa Ives (Green) to help find Sir Malcolm’s (Dalton) missing daughter. The three set out to battle the supernatural threats in Victorian London in search of his daughter. This looks to be an attention grabber for seasons to come.

Set your priorities Instead of going full throttle and doing everything at the same time – think and work on one thing at a time. If you have coke bottles, tissues, food, etc. lying on the floor, clear them first. Carrying a big plastic bag in which you can pick these up always saves time. You do not want the dishes to be lying on the dining table. As such collect them and take them to the sink. You can either have your dish washing session the very night or save it for the next morning.

However, a sink full of dirty dishes is not the best way to start your day.

Attending to the leftoversCollect all the leftover food and drinks. Refrigerate those which are still edible and discard the ones which aren’t, before they start giving out a foul smell.

A little scrubbing and mopping

A helping hand Do not get all worked up trying to do everything on your own. Get someone to help you with the clean up. The person (friend, spouse, kids) can at least chit chat with you while you clear things up. This will help you from getting stressed. It is surprising how smoothly things run when you have someone to have a friendly talk with and even better if he/she offers a hand or two in helping you.

The party is over, the guests have left and the house looks like a battlefield. It is time to put your Monica Hat on and clear the mess

Coming clean

You do not want any permanent stains on your sofa set, carpet and other precious furniture. It is best to mop the furniture of the party venue ASAP post the party. Once you are done picking up the empty cans, tissues, etc. you might as well give a quick mop to the floor. Place the sofa pillows, tablecloths, television remote, side tables and other things, whose position you have changed to make room for the party, back to their original spots.

A little self praisingOnce you are done with all these, pat yourself. Go to bed and hibernate like a polar bear. You have earned it.

Keeping your gaming consoles on drains plenty of energy and racks up on the electricity bill. While it’s recommended you take a break after an hour or two of gaming, many of us leave our systems on. What many gamers may not know is that Xbox One’s instant-on mode actually uses 30 times more power. It’s convenient, sure, but it risks your hardware to overheat. And that, friends, is never a good thing.

There are plenty of cool features while you’re on the instant-on mode but switching it to energy-saving mode isn’t that bad of a trade. If you can do without the “Xbox on” command or the two second boot-up and automatic updates, then saving some energy shouldn’t hurt. Using energy-saving mode uses 0.5W of power compared to the 15W in instant-on mode.

Here’s how to change things up:1. Press the Menu button on

your controller.2. Go to Settings, then to Power

& Startup.3. Highlight the Power mode

under Power Options. Press the “A” button to toggle between instant-on and energy-saving.

Three simple steps will lead to an orange glow from the LED on your power supply, instead of the usual white light.

The new Microsoft Surface Pro 3 flirts with the line between tablets and laptops. It’s not a laptop in the sense it’s missing key pieces you would expect in an actual laptop. But it’s not your average tablet either with its 12-inch display. It lacks the productivity characteristics you would find in a full featured laptop. However, this might take the attention away from people taking their ultrabook or MacBook Air and tablets with them at the same time. It’s lighter and thinner than the previous two models so off the bat, it’s an attractive item. The performance doesn’t lag behind either. The base model comes with an Intel Core i3 CPU and a 64GB SSD. An upgradable version possesses a Core i5 CPU with a 256GB SSD. Don’t get too excited, that type cover keyboard is sold separately. But it shouldn’t be a complete downer, the tablet comes with a battery-powered Bluetooth pen. It would seem as if

Loggr, for iOS, is a free productivity app that records certain aspects of your life. Right off the bat, it’s very clear about you not having to own any wearable devices to connect to the app. Which is something Apple is focusing towards with their new upgraded mobile technology. What you will notice right away is the

you’re holding a large notebook, while you’re taking down notes, sketching or drawing. If you are willing to pay that extra for its type cover, it will be worth every penny. The practical use of this attachment is a clever one. It’s used not only as a keyboard, but also as a screen protector, and a touchpad interface. The entire experience rivals that of a MacBook Air. Priced a little higher than the Air, the performance justifies the figure.

The specs:• 12-inch (2,160x1,440) touch

beautiful and easy to use user interface. From logging in your current form to data graphs, the characteristics of the app are well organised. They’ve kept it simple to avoid clutter and confusion, as it has plenty of data to present.

The concept is a refreshing take on a productivity application. There’s nothing complicated or out of the ordinary here. A huge positive is that it lets you track what you want to track. You are not limited to a few topics. You can type in your own category by simply tapping the “+” sign at the top of the app. You’ll have the usual health stats, from calorie count to the miles you’ve ran. But

think about how many pages you’ve read from a novel or your ability to cut down on caffeine. As you can imagine, there’s a host of logs you can keep through this app. Let’s not forget to mention that it also allows you to export the data through Excel docs, and the ability to share with your friends.

The only drawback of this app is that you have to enter everything manually. And if you’re really nit-picking, there aren’t any option to add negative values so that you can be more disciplined towards certain habits.

Anything that rolls down the Mercedes Benz production line has always been a complete eye candy for everybody. And the all new 2014 Mercedes Benz E-class is no exception. Known as the world’s most favourite sedan, the E-class is actually an eye stopper; proving you with even elegant styling and powerful features. An absolute beauty to fall in love with from the very first sight.

ExteriorThe exterior of the new E-class has completely been redesigned. With lustrous lines flowing from the front to the back, the car is nothing short of the true German beauty. The dual headlamps have been replaced with sparking single housing head-lamps with dual LED running day lamps. The older front grille has been replaced with an even bigger grille to add the menacing look to it. The door handles and the side view mirrors are available in the same colour tone that you prefer your E-class to be in.

InteriorOn the inside, the cabin is just phenomenal. The seats are wrapped in high quality suede leather and are really soft and comfy. They are so soft that you feel right at home, on your bed filled with roses. The cabin is very spacious with plenty of room for the passengers both at the front and the rear. The centre console consists of a sleek and burnished wooden inlay and also a trademark Mercedes analogue clock right in the middle of the console. However, the rear passengers can also enjoy the LED displays present at the back of the front seats. Even the cargo space in the E-class is superb.

PerformanceThe Mercedes Benz E-class is

powered by a 2.0-litre in-line four cylinder engine that produces 211HP. There is a power increase of 14HP from the prevision generation of the E-class. The engine is coupled up with a seven-speed automatic transmission that without a doubt delivers an improved fuel economy. Better yet, the direct control sports suspension and the sports tunes shock absorbers give the car a greater stability at high speeds and also make the cornering razor-sharp precise. Add all of them up and you get a superior performance package that is not available in any other car of its class.

road jerks| Sumaiya AfreenIrritating, rowdy, reckles. Yes, we mean traffic in Bangladesh. Everyone knows what traffic is like in Dhaka. There are no set rules on how to drive; no lanes, street signs, or stop lights for that matter. Drivers are always in a rush not caring for anyone on the road except for themselves. How a person handles driving shows a reflection of their character. For example; if a pedestrian is crossing the street, shouldn’t the driver slow down and let them cross instead of almost running them over? If one driver is trying to merge onto the street, shouldn’t the driver in front of him give him the space to pull in? Since most drivers don’t have the patience on the streets, who is to say, they will have patience as a person? A person’s distinctiveness is reflected through his/her actions. With that being said, Dhaka drivers portray negative personalities when driving.

The impatient raring to go from place to place are on the rise. Courtesy is thrown out the window. These days, drivers are uneducated on rules. It’s simple, civilian drivers have not been given the proper training that is required to maintain a driver’s license. A written test should be given on street civility. Maybe then will drivers and chauffeurs be more knowledgeable on how to drive in an orderly fashion. Could you imagine if people maintained a humane way to drive on the roads of Bangladesh? People would be more at ease not only with each other but with themselves. There would be less traffic, less frustration, and driving to places would actually be a leisure activity.

So, will these hasty drivers drive safer if someone tells them to? Most likely not. What can be done is that, we can teach new drivers to drive carefully, at our best. With the proper instruction, drivers will be more aware of their surroundings. Maybe we can send them to a resort or retreat where they can relax themselves. After they get back, their minds will be refreshed and ready to tackle the exciting streets of Dhaka. If only that was manageable, we would be more at peace. Till the new revolution arises, please drive cautiously!

how to clean leather car seats? Keeping the interior of the car neat and clean is often the difference between a well maintained and the not so well maintained vehicle. Luckily for you though, cleaning the leather seats doesn’t take very long. Before you get started at conditioning the leather upholstery, make sure that you have cleared off all the dust and oils that have accumulated since the last clean. You may use a microfibre towel or a very soft bristled brush or even a regular cloth. Then use a regular kitchen sponge to apply the leather conditioner liberally throughout the leather upholstery. Make sure to give it a good rub; the more you rub the conditioner, the longer it will last.

SafetyThe engineers at Mercedes upgraded the old safety features and added a couple of new features to let you enjoy a stress free ride. The car comes standard with antilock disc brakes and stability that refrain the car from getting out of control. They also help prevent over-steer and under-steer. The traction control system on the other hand, is there to keep the car firmly planted to the road. It has front air bags, and side curtain air bags. And the newest additions are the front pelvic air bags and driver knee air bag to protect you from any kind of injury.

The unique E-class has been designed to impress; it’s absolutely eye-catching from every angle and its exceptional performance will not disappoint.

I am a 25-year-old gay man who just came out to his single mother. My mother won’t even look at me ever since my confession. She’s locking me up at home and has asked me to stay in my room until I can “fight this illness.” I feel like an animal caged in my own home. My uncle who lives with me has asked the maids not to wash my clothes with theirs, or even use the same spoons for cooking that I may use. He tried to take me to a hormone doctor. When my doctor said nothing is wrong, he INSISTED that I am ill. They just won’t accept that this is not a way of life I have chosen. This is just how I am. I am so frustrated I just want to die. Sweety pie, you have already cheated on your girlfriend. Cheating begins in the mind, then in the body and through actions. If you are a regular reader of this column, you may know by now I do not believe in a close relationship between a man and his best friend’s wife or girlfriend. It usually ends up in tears. Talking on the phone a lot? Who are you kidding?

Take a decision; you have two options. If your girlfriend is important enough to you, stop talking to the other lady. If you really feel the bond is so strong with the other lady, get honourably off your present relationship.

a

I have a crush on my girlfriend’s best friend. I’ve known her longer than I’ve known my girlfriend, and if she hadn’t dropped into my life I might actually have asked out her best friend one day. We’re very close friends and we talk for long hours everyday. My girlfriend is okay with it; she trusts both of us - which makes this situation all the more difficult. I know I’m not the only one feeling this spark. I know in my heart that she has a thing for me too. I don’t want to be the guy who cheats on his girlfriend with her best friend, but I can’t hold back these feelings forever. I need some help with this sticky situation. Any pointers?

ARies (MAR 21-APR 19) The week continues to be very convivial and primarily positive. The beginning of the week brings a chance to connect with others to brainstorm, get feedback, and interact for romance or business.

TAuRus (Apr 20-May 20)You might want to invest in improving your health by purchasing some exercise equipment or a gym membership.

GeMini (May 21-Jun 20)Your curiosity will peak, and your confidence will flourish, encouraging you to consider dating if you’ve been out of the loop for some time.

CAnCeR (Jun 21-Jul 22)You might be motivated to start on an idea you’ve been contemplating over for some time. Fear and doubt could raid you exactly when you need confidence and enthusiasm in order to move forward.

Leo (Jul 23-Aug 22)Conversations will lead to productive encounters, and opportunities to get involved in creative projects will arise. Do bear in mind that it’s not the right time to make snap decisions.

ViRGo (Aug 23-Sep 22)New career opportunities might pop up if you’re willing to step outside your comfort zone. However, an emotional surge may fog your thoughts midweek.

issues

The unacceptedI am sorry for what you are going through. I do understand your family being shocked and behaving in such a way. Give them time. You know YOU did not decide to be gay. You are gay, just as some men are heterosexual. Your family does not know it, they believe it is a sin and again they are tormented by the idea of what people will think or say.

Remember your mother’s love is still there, she really wants the best for you, so do not fight her. Write her a letter and tell her this is not a choice, you cannot choose not to be gay. Find some good articles online that talk about it, and how other families cope with this situation. Give your mother time, behave nicely with her, hopefully she will soon realise that her son is still the same loving son as before she knew his sexual preference. Fight ignorance with love.

Let me know how things turn out; your experience will help many other readers.

You’re blessed if you can smoothly sail through a day at the office. The rest of us have to deal with a number of characters everyday, some of who make us want to pull our precious hair out. Here’s a breakdown of some of the cast in the movie that is your work and how to deal with them.

The drama queenAll eyes must be on her. She walks into work in tears and needs to vent to you. She fights with her boyfriend/husband loudly on the phone, while you squirm uncomfortably in your chair. She asks you what she should do about her verbally abusive mate. When you try to help and tell her she may be in a dead end relationship, she claims you don’t understand their special “love.” What?

How to dealResist the urge to slap some sense into this one. Odds are good that she doesn’t need sound advice - she just wants attention, however and whenever possible. Next time she runs over to you with one of her never-ending sagas, tell her you’ve got piled up work you need to handle. She’ll probably get the message after you do this a few times and move on to the next sympathetic ear. Let them deal with her.

The pervThis is something girls usually have to encounter. It may happen to men too, in case you happen to be a hot piece of guy

candy. Dream on! There is always that creep who takes his time looking you up and down and can never make eye contact because his gaze is stuck on your chest. This kind of behaviour can make you feel all dirty but remember, it’s not your fault. A pervert is a pervert and an exposed ankle could send these fools over the edge.

How to dealThis is a bit tricky. If you decide to go to HR, make sure they don’t mention your name when they call him out on his crass ways. Creeps have a way of making some women feel like it was their fault in the first place and things could get ugly. You could also grow a pair, walk straight up to the guy and tell him you know what’s up. He definitely won’t be expecting that and will probably be too scared to look your way again.

Our Agony Aunt is a life coach and a relationship coach as well as a corporate and organisational consultant. AA lives and works in Bangladesh but travels extensively around the world to attend seminars and see her clients

Well, my dear, it is not only your gut that is telling you what is happening, you have hard evidence. Before the matter gets worse, inform a relative of his and tell them about your worries. They will not like what they hear, but in the long run you will do him a favour.

His family may choose to look the other way and ignore it, since he may still look okay and behave in an acceptable manner at home. In that case, withdraw slowly and tell him that if he chooses to get help you will be with him and of course, you love him but you cannot stand there and do nothing. He is worthy of your fight for him - the person you fell in love with. You want that person back into your life.

Sadly, drugs savage people’s brains and attitudes and only the onlookers realise this grave situation, while the drug takers live in a la-la land thinking their lives are okay. Inform and retreat.

aI have been with someone for almost two years now, and so far it has been pretty smooth. He has recently started pursuing his Master’s and hanging with a different crowd of people who indulge themselves in all kinds of things including partying, drinking and doing drugs. I think they’re introducing him to a lifestyle I don’t approve of. My gut tells me my boyfriend is actually changing into someone else, even though neither of us like to admit it. He treats me differently and recently even considering taking up drugs, and that is something I never thought would cross his simple mind. I’m afraid that this relationship will soon go downhill because of his laid back attitude and indifference to my wishes. Is there a way to stop the inevitable?

We at The Party Popper believe throwing a party is easy, if you know what you are doing. But planning a themed party takes time and thought. There are a number of things you need to know and do before you can get started with the planning of a party with a certain theme. Ask yourself a few basic questions - “What is the date?” “How many guests will be there?” “What is the location?” “What type of party will it be?” “What is your budget?” “Is there going to be music or entertainment?” What actually makes a great themed party? RESEARCH! Once you have chosen a theme all you need to know and find out are the different elements of your theme. As we run our little themed party event company we have learnt that it’s not just having a theme. Many people come to us with a theme but have no clue what exactly they want. Hence, the best thing to do is research. Do not just restrict yourself to the internet; there are magazines, your surroundings, pictures of other people’s parties and books on decorating which will be your friend for life. Once you have a list of items or elements of decoration that you want in your party, the next step is organisation- the number one key to planning a party for yourself or others.

World Cup themed partyHave a football turf tablecloth, goal posts and cupcake bleacher stand that could be customised to colours of your favourite team! You can also have a scoreboard inspired invitation. You can have cupcakes that are dressed up with football player or different team with cupcake toppers. Get someone to volunteer to paint face! It helps increase blood circulation and also relaxes the muscles. Various research show that stress is one of the major causes of various kinds of illnesses. Laughter yoga helps attack this very cause and acts as an antibody for depression, blood pressure related illnesses, and also cope with the pressure of chronic diseases like cancers. It helps bring an overall balance in our lives by attacking emotional, physical and mental stress factors surrounding it. A 10 minute of a laughter yoga session can do wonders; it is a more effective cardio-exercise than spending 30 minutes on a rowing machine.

There are days when you are in a good mood and then there are those when you have a bad one. These mood swings affect the overall productivity of your entire day. Laughter yoga helps release a particular type of chemicals, endorphins, which have the ability to change your mood within minutes and help you remain cheerful for the rest of the day. It helps you develop a good sense of humour and gives a more positive outlook

towards life by attacking the negative elements.

Laughter yoga boasts your energy by assisting in increased release of carbon dioxide. This keeps you energised and you can go about facing your daily routine with an added breeze of energy.

Laughter yoga is usually done in laughter groups. As such it promotes and provides a rich social network where you get to meet new people with similar interest. This helps provide a sense of bonding and emotional security which in the long run help fight stress.

You wake up with a parched throat, dim memories of telling strangers you loved/hated them, head pounding to the beat of hammers at the construction site next door, swearing you’ll never have another drop to drink. Whether you were drinking away your sorrows or just getting through a typical Thursday night reliving your college days, you sir, are hung over. Resist the urge to roll over and go back to sleep. Your body needs some tending to. Here are some options:

chugging it at this point may make you have to hug the toilet, if you

already haven’t a couple of times. Your sugar levels will probably

be low as well, so try and drink some Gatorade or better yet, a

glass of good old Orsaline to balance yourself out.

burnt toastSome swear by eating a slice of charred toast.

The burnt bits contain carbon which helps your body rid itself of the toxins that those endless glasses of wine left behind. We’re not talking about golden brown toast here. You need the burnt black kind.

Hair of the dogThis should never be your go-to option. Sure, drinking a little the next day might ease the pain temporarily, but it will only delay your hangover and you’ll have to go through the symptoms again. Deal with it and do it the right way.

Drink responsiblyPrevent a hangover in the first place. Drink a glass of water between each lethal fruity concoction you consume. Never drink on an empty stomach unless you don’t mind puking your guts out all over your boyfriend’s new Ferrari Polo. Warning! Ferrari Polos have been known to induce vomiting! Jokes aside, save yourself the pain of wondering about the many ways you made a fool of yourself. Cheers.

The big summer bashThe big summer bash

10 | Trial room

| N Anita AmreenThis week Avenue T talks to Tootli Rahman, leading event manager, fashion designer and a pioneer in garden landscaping to help readers plan out their very own summer bash. This go-to guide to décor and catering ideas can help you breeze through the planning period and ease into the party itself. Read on to get the party started!

PlanningWhether you choose an outdoor setting or prefer the comfort of your home, it’s best to plan out your guest list and then decide on décor/seating arrangements/catering and so on. While summer bashes usually call for indoor parties, it’s also possible to hold a grand outdoor event. “Just because it’s summer, you don’t necessarily have to throw an indoor party and limit yourself. You can always throw an outdoor bash, with a beautifully set canopy that is lined with tarpaulin. Moreover, you can even hire A/Cs to beat the heat,” says Tootli Rahman. Once you have your guest list and choice of place ready, it is much easier to decide on the other elements of your summer bash.

Decor“Summer invariably calls for pastel themed décor; soft yellow, powder blue and peach are excellent choices,” suggests Tootli. However, she also mentions that when choosing a colour theme, you must first have a look at your surroundings, “While everyone would love to settle for a pastel theme, it’s not always possible to do so if your house is decorated in a completely different shade. For instance, if your living room or dining space is decorated in bright shades of maroon or blue, opting for pastel themed décor wouldn’t be too flattering. It’s always good to work with what you already have. If your home

is decorated in basic shades of beige, nude or white, it’s easy to play with pastels and work on softer décor ideas.”

Once your colour scheme has been selected, you can then move on to the finer details. “You can keep it hassle free and ask a decorator to rent out chairs that you can drape with pastel shaded cloth to add glamour to your bash. Smaller flower arrangements can be placed in your entrance area and as centrepieces. You can either buy a few flowers yourself and place them in vases, surrounding them with a few candles to create an ambience, or you can even ask any local flower shop to help if it seems like too much work.”

Whether it’s a dinner or a lunch bash, a nicely laid out table that is both eye-catching and inviting is always a welcome addition. Although it isn’t necessary to have an elaborate meal that has more courses than you can count, even a small four course dinner can be laid out with the same finesse. “To make it interesting, match your tableware with the colour scheme you have chosen. Use your best china, place coloured napkins and napkin holders to add elegance to your table. A summer bash will be incomplete without a well laid table.”

If you’re having a high tea party or a full-fledged dinner, you can set up a separate dessert table or a tiered rack full of delectable

finger food. “These days people are very big on elaborate dessert stations. Not only does this double up as a centrepiece, but it has also become a central part of big bashes. Although we love dessert tables, truth be told most of us are very conscious about what we eat – why not try setting up a light soup station or a salad bar? Personally I think that’d be a far more practical and interesting alternative to dessert tables.”

CateringFood is almost always half the party itself. Bengalis love a full, wholesome looking table filled with delectable dishes. “When it comes to us Bengalis, a party is the equivalent of a feast. We love and enjoy the festive feel of a full table,” says Tootli.

If your summer bash is meant to be a high tea event, it’s nice to have the regular items such as sandwiches, scones, teacakes, etc. along with slightly heavier, yet bite sized servings of different kinds of meat rolls and spring rolls. “Even when it comes to high tea parties in our country, the menu may just offer “finger food” but it usually consists of everything from the usual sandwiches to rolls, lasagna, pasta and even parathas to cater to our bountiful appetite,” says Tootli.

As for a regular summer dinner, Tootli emphasises on the

importance of presentation. “A dinner doesn’t always need to have several types of entree’s, main courses and dessert items. A few selective dishes can be a success as long as you present them right.” With summer rolling in, Tootli believes that switching the heavy food trend on to something lighter such as soup and salads can be a better option. She adds, “As I

mentioned before, some people have tried presenting guests with a soup station and a salad bar. Unsurprisingly, it was hugely successful.” Different kinds of interesting salad mixes and dressing can be paired to give guests a varied choice of salads to create their own.

Along with the food, remember to have a large array of cool, refreshing summer drinks.

Flavoured iced tea, mojito mocktails and even ice popsicles can be served for those in need of a chilled thirst quencher. After all, what is a summer bash if not a way to take a cooling break away from the unbearable summer sun? Pre plan, list, and tackle each part of your summer bash beforehand to make sure you have a relaxing, fuss-free evening to look forward to and enjoy.

I haven’t had time to work out much, so my arms are getting flabby. There are a few parties

coming up, and I want to look nice. I know all about avoiding cap sleeves, but what are some sleeve options that are suitable for this humid weather?

Ideally, you want loose sleeves that end past the elbows. Bell-sleeves, dolmans, and flutter

sleeves are all great options. Billowy sleeves will not only disguise your arm flab, they will do so without clinging to your skin in the heat.

I’m so into summer whites that I went and got myself a pair of white denim, and am currently suffering

buyer’s regret. How does one where white in this dusty city?

Well, for starters, don’t wear them on days you’re not travelling by car. White denim less forgiving of

VPL’s, so before you wear them out, do a few trial runs at home in various lighting, and a couple of underwear options, so that you’re not showing more than you intend to when you’re out. Other than that, there’s no reason to regret your purchase; white jeans are all the rage right now. Pair them with a loose button down, loafers and scarf during the day, and take it to night-time with a halter top, or an embellished kurti and heels for evening parties.

I got some printed leggings last year, and they’re still in great shape. How do I get a few more wears out of them without looking dated?

For a casual look, you can pair them with a long tank and a summer blazer. Accessorise with

a long pendant, an envelope bag, and strappy flats. For a more luxe party appeal, try a flowy silk top with dolman sleeves, or a short kurti in a bright solid colour, throw on some sparkly, dangle earrings, and you’re ready to get your groove on.

pool partiesWhether you dare to bare and get in the water or not, let’s get something straight - avoid heels at all costs. You may want to strut your stuff poolside like a Victoria’s Secret model, but you’ll be far from that when you fall on your face. On a more serious note, you could really hurt yourself. Think rubber jellies, cute flats or even basic flip flops.

outdoor shindigsBe it an outdoor wedding ceremony or a garden party, here is another situation where you may not want to reach for the spike heels. They will sink into the ground beneath your feet and make you walk funny. Wedges are the way to go. They can be as high as you want so you don’t

have to sacrifice any height.

Lately, hardly a weekend goes by when there isn’t a theme party going on in Dhaka city. However commonplace the concept is, some women seem clueless when it comes to picking the right shoes for a specific event. Let’s make things easy and break it down for you

Dance dance danceHere is where you can go wild with the footwear. Parties at someone’s home or indoor locations will usually have tile or wood flooring. Flaunt your highest, sexiest sky scrapers if you dare. Remember it helps if you are already comfortable in heels in general. There is nothing

worse than walking around barefoot at a party while you

step on broken glass and drunk people stomp on

your toes.

Page 15: Avenue T Volume 2 Issue 7

Moccasin boat shoes are a unique blend when it comes to stylish footwear. You don’t have to own a yacht or be in one to rock a pair of these in leather or suede. There are also pairs from certain brands that have spliced these loafers with driving shoes soles. You know, the

tire-like finish to the bottom of the shoe. This has quickly become the go-to semi-casual shoes for the daring and chill alike.

Whether it’s heading off to a Friday night party or a casual kickback at your uncle’s, these go

perfectly fine with jeans or casual trousers. You’ll be able to take it up a notch with contrasting belts or bracelets and watches in a similar shade of colour. The entire vibe behind these shoes are of a classic Mediterranean look, given that you have the entire outfit in sync.

Another wonderful bit about the moccasin boat shoes is that they can be worn for almost every occasion, apart from weddings and funerals of course.

There are more positives than negatives to them. Light, comfortable and ridiculously suave, it’s all about walking into and out of a scene with swagger. Its lightweight

materials make it easy for you to place them in your luggage or duffel bag when you’re on the move. Jumping out of the locker room and into your “get fly” outfit will be as smooth as butter. And if it’s suede you’re worrying about, you can always get those shoe bags to toss them into, protecting them from the rain.

don’t mind the dJFirst thing is first, the pre-game procedure is vital. It doesn’t matter where the shindig is, your grooming has to be nearly flawless. Just because you might be wearing a mask in a tacky masquerade doesn’t mean you won’t be taking it off later for some face time. If you catch the drift. Your hair, your face, and the rest of the body need some quality attention before you head out. Smell is also important. Try and spray a scent that can last the entire evening to the end of the night. That doesn’t mean very strong scents, just a cologne that has a lasting effect.

Your footwear is the second most important. Everything at this point should be premeditated. You have to know how many hours you’ll be on your feet and how much dance floor time you plan on taking. If it’s at the beach, you have your sandals. If it’s seaside, the loafers come out to play. If it’s at an upscale venue, lace-ups (oxfords) should be in order. If it’s at the club or the roof top, a pair of

derby shoes (leather or suede) is the right choice.

Last but not least, please make sure your clothes fit. Before you plan on grinding with someone on the dance floor, it is best that nothing is flailing about like some

juvenile lost at the mall. And keep the accessories to a minimal. Your partner,

whoever she is, won’t be able to take her eyes of a man who is dressed sharp and ready to dance. And you better make sure that man is you.

Rock the boat I have to admit, I’m guilty on going commando from time to time. Especially during the summer. Is it

ever okay to go commando? For those who aren’t aware, going commando means going out without any underwear. Why in

the world would you do that in the first place? There seems no legitimate reason for you to rid of your underwear. There are so many unfortunate incidents that you might trip into. You ever think about skid marks? Or perhaps the trousers clinging onto your butt crack? Do you see where this is all going? Free balling is highly unat-tractive. And God forbid you de-velop a rash when wearing denim. There’s a reason underwear is part of an outfit, it’s not a fashion statement. It protects your pri-vates and keeps the family jewels intact. You must keep in mind there are comfortable substitutes to Superman’s outermost layer.

Every time I go to a club or a dance event, I see plenty of guys in these long sleeve shirts. They are a sweaty

mess at the end of the night. How can they go in, while looking styl-ish, without worrying about being drenched?

The reason why those ill-advised gentlemen are dipping through Niagara Falls is because of either

two reasons. One, they can’t help it. Biologically, their sweat glands are running through a process like dolphins during mating season. That’s fine, and mind you they are giving it their all on the dance floor. Second, those shirts are of uncomfortable fashion. Say no to polyester. It’s the warmer days so it’s perfectly fine to be wearing light cotton shirts. Most likely, those guys figured, hey it’s something shiny and it’ll stand out. Don’t do it.

Summer has been served up with a heaping side of humidity. What’s a girl to do when she needs to look her best but has make-up melting down her face instead?

14 | Tempt

The heat is on

Clean linesSkip the pencil eyeliner and shadow. Instead, prep your eyes with powder, and use a bright liquid eyeliner to draw a simple line on your top lids. Since it’s liquid, the formula will be melt-proof. Choose anything from bright blue to neon green to really make them pop. Follow with a few coats of waterproof mascara.

Haute TrendUpdate the still-popular winged liner with the hot new trend: coloured double wings. First, using a black liquid liner, draw your basic cat eye. When that dries, draw a second line over the first, this time in a bright neon or metallic colour. Finish off with a sweep of mascara, and voila! You’re ready to hit the town.

Powder upIf you don’t need a lot of coverage on your face, skip the foundation altogether. If you can’t leave home without it, go for a powder version. This can also double up as a concealer, so you won’t have to layer on any more goop.

HairOutdoors events in this heat are probably not the right time for elaborate hairdos. Unless your hair is re-bonded, don’t try to force it straight. Remember that the minute you step outside, the humidity will play a number on your hair even if you have used a straightening iron. Play up natural texture and add a few braids here and there for interest. A modern bun could be your go-to hairstyle this summer.

Shopping 101Check out the vast array of online shops on Facebook to order any of the products mentioned here and have them delivered to your doorstep.

My boyfriend and I are going on a beach trip in five weeks. I’m mortified because this is the first time he will see me

in a bathing suit. I have cellulite and I could lose a couple of kilos and I’m not entirely comfortable going without make-up. Help!

Don’t flip out. Five weeks is enough time to prepare and get yourself into gear. Start a

cardio routine and stick with it. Take the stairs whenever you can for added results. As for the cellulite, there are a few things you can do to make your skin appear smoother. Use a body brush everyday pre shower to get your circulation going. Get in the habit of using ground coffee beans as a scrub, as the caffeine helps make skin look taut. Finish off with a firming moisturiser, which can be found in Priyo stores. If you still feel insecure about your body, wear a sarong or cute cover-up while frolicking on the sand with your sweetie. As for the make-up, use a rosy face tint on the apple of your cheeks and lips. You can use waterproof mascara as well, as long as you’re not planning on going deep-sea diving. Even waterproof formulas will make those eyes burn!

Backpacking in BdThe boom of online stores in Bangladesh is not unfamiliar to us social media savvy folk. But we also find it difficult shopping online since we don’t have our own licensed version of Amazon and eBay sites. Most likely, we depend on family and friends from abroad to bring us our desired items. Backpackbang.com is your source of the easiest and safest way of ordering from the web. What we have here is a one of a kind website that helps travellers and shoppers connect in a new way. It

completely avoids the messy, insecure process when buying something overseas. Above all, it’s easy to use.

The home page of the site requires you to sign-in through e-mail or Facebook. Once you’ve signed in you can start shopping for items through the net. Once you’ve chosen the desired item (searching for the most affordable version) you choose travellers that are located in certain parts of the world. You are then able to negotiate a price and fee with the traveller over the item. So far, from

experience, the negotiating process is a cinch. And to a certain extent, it’s the most comfortable way of negotiating. Once the deal has been confirmed you just have to wait until the traveller has made the purchase and is ready to receive his or her fee.

The site makes it very convenient for shoppers, as each traveller’s arrival date is shown to the right when you are asked to choose a traveller. You can virtually shop for anything a person is willing to buy and bring for you. The advantage for those going

abroad can enter their travel plans and start earning money through the negotiations. Think of it this way: if you pay for a gadget here for Tk36,000, when the actual price is TK28,000, you’re spending too much. Although the travellers request a small fee, you are still saving plenty of money. Ultimately, it’s a fair addition to your total price. The entire experience is a very pleasant one. For those of you who love shopping, here’s a new online addiction.

Ultra Music FestivalThe Ultra Music Festival is the boldest and brightest electronic music festival in North America and takes place between March 28 and 30 in Miami, Florida. Last year the concert was rocked by performers like Swedish House Mafia, Afrojack, Fatboy Slim, Crystal Castles, Armin Van Buuren, and Deadmau5. This year the headline appearances were made by Armin van Buuren, Carl Cox, Avicci, David Guetta, Afrojack, Hardwell, Fedde Le Grand, Krewella, New World Punx (Markus Schulz and Ferry Corsten), Nicky Romero, The Glitch Mob, M.I.A, Tiësto, and Zedd among many others. The fete has passed, but hey, you can always book early for next year’s!

CoachellaThe Coachella Valley Music Festival is a two-weekend and three-day long music and arts festival held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, every year. The 2014 summer festival featured 184 artists, including Pharrell Williams, Lana Del Ray, Empire of the Sun, Calvin Harris, Lorde, Bastille, Foster the People, Broken Bells and The 1975 among many others. The magic of the night was magnified as Beyonce, Justin Bieber, Jay-Z, Puff Daddy, Deborah Harry, Drake and Childish Gambino showed up to make surprise appearances! It is said that Pharrell Williams had the maximum number of guests - Nelly, Snoop Dogg, Gwen Stefani and Diplo. The festival was held on April 11, 12 and 13, and then again on April 18, 19 and 20. Even if you’ve missed this year’s carnival, don’t make the same mistake next April.

Bonnaroo Music FestivalThe Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival is a yearly four-day music festival created and produced by Superfly Presents and AC Entertainment. The festival was held from June 12 to 15, at Great Stage Park in a 700 acre farm in Manchester, Tennessee. The main attraction of the festival lies in the diversity of music genre - indie rock, world music, hip-hop, jazz, Americana, bluegrass, country music, folk, gospel, reggae, pop, electronica, and other alternative music. This year, too, the Bonnaroo gala did not disappoint. Artists like Wiz Khalifa, Kanye West, Lauryn Hill, James Blake, Janelle Monae, Elton John, Lionel Richie, Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend, Phoenix, Jack White and Frank Ocean rocked the fest this year, in the company of many other Billboard toppers. It was truly an eclectic event. You’re out of luck this year; maybe next time you’ll be a little more careful booking tickets!

LollapaloozaLollapalooza is a music festival featuring the very popular alternative rock, heavy metal, punk rock and hip hop bands, dance and comedy performances. It was created in 1990 by a few band boys as a farewell tour for Jane’s Addiction, followed by an inception in 1997 and since its reawakening at 2003, it has been one of the biggest and hottest summer music festivals conducted throughout the globe. This year, too, Lollapalooza is going to organise the biggest concerts at Grant Park, Chicago from August 1 to 3. Unfortunately, but predictably, all the tickets sold out within twenty minutes of release; all they are left with are the platinum and travel package. This year’s lineup includes Eminem, The Kooks, Arctic Monkeys, Skrillex, Kings of Leon, Calvin Harris, Lorde, Foster the People, Zedd, Krewella, Highly Suspect, Rocky Business and Royal Blood to name a few. Book your tickets before there’s none left!

BestivalBestival is a music festival organised by DJ and record producer Rob da Bank along with his wife Josie. It is held at the Robin Hill country park on the Isle of Wight, England, and it has been held annually since 2004 late summer. This year Bestival’s theme is Desert Island Disco. Outkast, Foals, Beck and Chic Featuring Nile Rodger will perform the headline acts, accompanied by Disclosure, Major Lazer, Busta Rhymes, Paloma Faith, Basement Jaxx, London Grammar, Shitfaced Shakespeare and Major Lazer among several others. It’s going to be held from September 4 to 7 this year, so grab your tickets before someone else does!

Discover the flavours of Szechuan and Cantonese cuisine at The Westin Dhaka’s Seasonal Tastes (level 2). A press conference was held on June 12 at the Westin Dhaka Silver Room. Qu Guangzhou, chargé D’Affairs, Embassy of the People’s Republic of China, Dhaka, Bangladesh and general manager, Daniel Muhor from the Westin Dhaka with their senior management inaugurated the ceremony. Guest chefs Sam Zheng and Cary Deng from China presided over the Kitchen of Tastes restaurant with their expertise and passion of Chinese cuisine. Szechuan & Cantonese cuisines have their unique style of cooking. Szechuan dishes are spicy, although a typical meal includes non-spicy dishes to cool the palate. Szechuan cuisine is composed of seven basic flavours: sour, pungent, hot, sweet, bitter, aromatic, and salty. Cantonese cuisine is one of the eight culinary traditions of Chinese cuisines. Many cooking methods are used for this cuisine, with steaming and stir frying being the most favoured due to their

convenience and rapidity. Other techniques include shallow frying, double steaming, braising, and deep frying. In Cantonese cuisine, a number of ingredients such as spring onion, sugar, salt, soy sauce, rice wine, cornstarch, vinegar, scallion oil, and sesame oil, suffice to enhance flavour, although garlic is heavily used in some dishes. The special attraction of the festival is the dimsum which was served during the festival to represent the authentic Chinese cuisines.
