We take a slight detour from the movies and onto the red carpet at this year’s Grammy Awards. And let’s not forget to swerve back into the Road to the Oscars, through the BAFTA red carpet. The music heavy hitters took their looks straight from the runway to the red carpet. We’re talking about Best Album winning artist Beck, in Saint Laurent, to the more popular provocateur Rihanna.

All hail Queen B. Beyonce graced the red carpet with a slightly, plunging neckline in custom Proenza Schouler with Lorraine Schwartz jewellery

Taylor Swift looking pretty in a fairy princess get-up in Elie Saab and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery

From one queen to another, Gwen Stefani was looking her edgy self in Atelier Versace and Lorraine Schwartz jewellery

Rihanna looked like the cutest cupcake around in Giambattista Valli Haute Couture. We’re not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing for little Miss RiRi

Bleeding all in red and winner for Best Actress, Julianne Moore looked like a pure siren in Tom Ford

Co-stars, Hannah Bagshawe and Best Actor winner Eddie Redmayne in Giorgio Armani, looked exquisite

These two looked too divine to be labelled as the new Bond Girls. The Italian goddess Monica Bellucci in Alaia, and the French temptress Lea Seydoux in Prada

Golden Balls was flawless as always. David Beckham looking GQ in a shawl collar tux

In a beautiful and simple number worn by Reese Witherspoon was a wonderful contrast to the red carpet. Stella McCartney dress with Tiffany & Co jewels

Looking for a midnight hurricane? Ciara took a fantastic dress from Alexandre Vauthier Haute Couture and almost looked unrecognisable

Three quick DIYs for your beau

day lovingThis week we scoure the Net to find some of the easiest yet most quirky DIY ideas to help you earn star beau status. We’ve featured a fun love potion for those of you tired of the same old mundane V day gifts such as handmade photo frames, while for others we have simple sharpie mugs and heart shaped teabags.

Love potionIf you’re feeling particularly crafty and want a last minute DIY idea, this is the gift for you. Meant for playful couples, the love potion consists of a few simple goodies you can find at home to build a kit that’s fun, heartfelt and full of love.

You’ll need1 crate3 mason jarsPomegranate juice in a jarColourful printed streamersGlass 7up bottles3 colourful strawsPrinted instructionsPoster paint

DirectionsTake your crate and paint it in a design of your choice. To keep it simple you may paint a string of hearts on it. Print captions for each of the mason jars. Cut them out and paste one caption for each jar. Remove the jar lids and place them in the crate, placing one straw in each jar. Place the 7up bottles in the crate. Sprinkle the printed streamers in the crate to add a festive look. Finally, print an instruction manual and run a string through it to have it hanging from the top of the bottle of the pomegranate juice.

Sharpie mugsAnother quick DIY idea for a Valentine gift, this one is for lovers of all genders. The key to really nailing this gift is to make sure your message is beautifully inscribed.

You’ll needMug of your choiceMarkers or sharpies in a contrasting colour

DirectionsWipe down your mug, making sure the surface is clean. Using your

sharpie, first lightly trace your message on to the mug, then begin filling in the spots to thicken the text. Give it an hour to dry and present it to your beau in a nicely wrapped package.

Tea for twoThe perfect gift for tea aficionados, these heart shaped teabags are cute, romantic and a delicious way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

You’ll needNeedleThreadPoster paper in pinkScissorsTea of your choiceConstruction paper

DirectionsTake the construction paper and cut it into a square shape measuring 4cm on each side. Cut out two pieces of this paper for each teabag. Place one paper on top of the other and laterally cut out one corner edge. Stitch along the cut edge and then stuff the tea in. Be careful because since only one corner of the square is stitched, the tea might spill. Using the first stitched side as a starting point, continue stitching a heart shape around the construction paper, adjusting the amount of tea leaves as you go to ensure that the heart is filled with just the right amount of tea. After it’s stitched, tie a knot and cut the remaining thread. Using your needle put it through and out the centre to make a string. Cut out a small heart from the poster paper and run the edge of string through it. Tie the knot and you have your very own teabag.

We take a look at the better tablets with keyboard combination

you. It possesses Micro-USB and Micro-HDMI ports, with a microSD card slot. Its keyboard dock contains a full-size RGB and a HDMI output, with two USB 3.0 ports.

HP Elite x2We’ve taken some harsh shots at HP before, with their overall failure rates. However, this 11.6-inch tablet, with a detachable keyboard, is very approachable. Not to mention, it’s slim yet durable. With the keyboard attached, it weighs about 1.2 pounds (540 grams). The model’s name can be a bit misleading, it really isn’t for the elite society members. It’s actually presented towards the business field. Quite professional for an HP.

Lenovo ThinkPad 10This gem has plenty of accessories

and add-ons that can make the tablet experience a fun affair. But it has a fine balance with seriousness too. It actually feels like you’re using a laptop with the addition of a small touchpad.

Microsoft Surface Pro 3We’ve already featured this monster of a tablet. Yes, it’s a bit on the pricey side, but the revamped design has made the Pro 3 a more attractive purchase. And let’s not forget that sexy Bluetooth stylus.

There are already the many phablets in the market and the fast devices blurring the lines when it comes to mobile devices. Tablets can actually get plenty of work done. There’s no point of discussing the most recent iPad Air simply because it isn’t as generous as some other brands out there, when it comes to tablets. While the listed tablets here aren’t the greatest around, they are solid performers in the tablet market. Here’s a few tablets with complimentary keyboards to make your life easier.

Toshiba Portege Z20tThis tablet is slightly on the larger side, one of those devices that blur the lines. The Z20t is a 12.5-inch 2-in-1 device. It’s one of those hybrids that actually perform quite well. If you really are leaning towards a laptop, this could be a good fit for

Road Rage

It’s Valentine’s Day and you know what that means! PDA! From couples duplicating those Bangla cinema skits where they finally meet after running for a mile and a half across the yellow crop fields, to those love bugs sharing a rickshaw ride and trying to exchange a little peck on the cheek, PDA is everywhere. But it gets blurry when it comes to viewer discretion. Here’s our rating of some of the most common PDA moves from around here.

The arm lockerWe see these couples everywhere - taking a little stroll by the sidewalk or on a rickshaw, holding hands and gazing into each other’s eyes. Subtle and old-school, this gesture never goes out of fashion.

The huggerLet’s be honest! A gentle hug never killed anyone. Haven’t you seen those women holding on to their hubbies by the waist while riding a motorbike? How adorable do they look? If it’s okay for men to take a leak in public, we could surely cut these romantic bugs some slack.

The strokerThese ones take PDA to a whole new level, stroking the backside of the lady love on a rickshaw ride or groping random parts of her wonderland in the bus, these ones just don’t know where to draw the line. No you’re not being subtle when you’re fondling her derriere while in line for a ride at Shishu Mela. Get a room you two, no one needs to see that!

The lip-lockerThere’s a place and time for everything. Lip-locking on the backseat of your car in the middle of the after school hours is absolutely not it. Don’t get us wrong, we’re all for showing love and affection to our other halves. But just keep that line between being sweet and grody in mind. It’s something best suited behind closed doors.

Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Sends it to us at [email protected], or post it on our Facebook wall.

The Keeway Blackster 250i is not your typical cruiser that loves to show off its shiny bits under the bright sun. It is a hardcore cruiser that you take out to enjoy your weekend rides. Not surprisingly then, the biggest talking points for the 250i are the styling cues and the features. And it goes without saying, that it does beat its competition hollow on both counts, mostly because they are non-existent.

DesignThe 250i doesn’t really have many chrome bits, except for the large chrome on the dual straight side muffler and the front fork tubes. The anti-chrome 250i loves to flaunt its dark side. The powder coated cylinders, front shock absorbers, crankcase, side panels, and even the aluminium alloy wheels. In fact, most of the other components such as the low-rise drag styled handlebar and the headlamp bucket are also finished in matte black. Even though the design resembles the old school looks of the sportsters from the late 50s, the murky 250i, with its limited use of the chrome bits in all the right places, doesn’t fail to deliver a relatively modern design.

Performance and handlingAt the heart of the 250i is a 249cc V-twin engine producing 24.2HP of power and 21Nm of torque. It also has a 13.5-litres fuel tank that makes is easier for the rider to take this bike out on longer trips without having to stop for re-fuelling every now and then. The six-speed transmission is engaging with a smooth yet precise feel in a one-down and five-up shift pattern. Unexpectedly the clutch in the 250i feels a lot lighter for a wet-clutch system. The engine is quite smooth when hauling in traffic with adequate low-end torque. It fits right

in when cruising around at speeds of up to 80kph. With disc-brakes both in front and rear, the stopping distance of the 250i has been minimised by quite a bit.

TechnologyThe only drawback to the 250i is that it doesn’t have much of the modern technology on it. Almost everything is old fashioned, from the gauges to the tail lamps. But it does come equipped with a smart key that has a sensor chip, which is made specifically for individual bikes, so that no other key can be used. It also comes with familiar switchgear and stylish new clip-on handlebars that have comfortable and truncated grips.

Overall, the Keeway Blackster 250i might not be a worthy candidate in terms of practicality but then again, weekend bikes were never about practicality. It would be obvious for us here in Bangladesh to compare it to, say, a Japanese or even an Indian motorcycle, which would fare better overall and that too at a much lesser price. But for someone who intends to buy something just to take it out on the weekends, there is no better alternative than the 250i. It is loud, brash and powerful and most importantly it gives out the bad boy impression.

Q

aDear KTake some time to think back to the day when you proposed to her and asked her to marry you. What made you make that

decision? Was it an honest and genuine desire to be with the women you love or did the question rise out of a seemingly romantic encounter with her? If the latter is the case then it’s best you rethink your decision. However, if it is not, perhaps you are suffering from cold feet and ravaged nerves. The best thing right now would be to talk to your fiancee and really voice your fears. Whether or not you’ll be able to discuss this with her depends entirely on you, however, if you think you two share a comfort level that allows you to convey your message, then go ahead. Speak up now or don’t. Make a choice before it’s too late.

Dina Sobhan is a free-lance writer, a part-time counsellor and a full-time mom

It’s been three months since I asked my girlfriend of two years to marry me. We have proceeded to talk to each other’s families and the wedding date is set for July this year. Although I do love her, I am having major second thoughts. I am only 29 and all my friends are single and

having fun. I am afraid of a life where I will be completely tied down to just one woman for the rest of my life. What if I feel like straying after I’m married? All my friends are living life to the fullest while here I am counting days to my wedding, deciding on insignificant details like the wedding flowers and the colour of her dress. I hate feeling this way. Should I call it off?K

Q

a

My daughter wants to move abroad with her father. He has been living in the United States for the last 15 years, paying us a visit every five years or so. Since our entire family is here, we decided that my daughter and I should live here and it would be a fair compromise for the sake of his career. However, now

that my daughter is growing up and she has her own opinions, she told me she wants to go live with her father because she wants to “start over fresh.” I don’t know what it is exactly that makes her want to escape this place so badly. But the problem is, if she goes I have to go with her. And I don’t want to leave my whole family behind. On the other hand, my husband is completely on board with my daughter; he says we should respect her wishes. What should I do?

I think 15 years is an awfully long time for a wife and child to be separated from her husband/father. While I understand your desire to be near your family, you need to consider the wishes of your immediate, nuclear family. Your daughter is growing up and is

entitled to the opportunities that the West will allow her. Living in Bangladesh, while having many comforts, is also restrictive and limiting for young people in particular. Furthermore, I think it’s important for a family to be together. With regard to whatever “problem” your daughter may be having, you can try to help her resolve it but chances are she will not confide in you, especially if it is something personal or embarrassing. Either way, you should not view it as her running away but a chance for all of you to have a new life together.

No pressureValentine’s Day and the married couple

So you’re married and love it or hate it, Valentine’s Day rolls around. We’re not sure about love, but the pressure will definitely be all around. Starting from weepy jewellery ads on the television to extravagant, romantic gestures your Facebook news feed will be throwing at your face, don’t sweat it. That’s all it is - pressure. You don’t have to succumb to it. Do things your own way. Always remember the wise words of Bhim Naroula when it comes to love. You have to love each other everyday! Don’t know about this gem of a man? YouTube him as soon as possible.

Stay inYou both probably lead busy lives and hardly ever get the chance to just veg out at home. Well, here’s your chance! Instead of dishing out big bucks at the trendiest new eatery in town that probably serves up mediocre fare, cook together. It’s a great bonding experience that most people tend to overlook. Have young ones? Let them join in the fun by giving them little tasks they can handle. They are a product of your love after all. If you happen to have surly teens, however, sending them over to a friend’s may be a better idea. Get in those pajamas afterwards and maybe break out a board game you all enjoy. As the saying goes - a family that plays together stays together.

The good giftContrary to popular belief, all women were not created the same and aren’t into romance overload. Over the top gestures can be straight up embarrassing at times. Not all of us are into flowers either, so don’t think that you can just get her a bouquet and let it slide. You know your partner better than anyone else. Put some effort into it and get her something she really wants, not what she needs. No vacuum cleaners please. And why should women be the only ones showered with gifts? Get your man that gadget he’s been eyeing but not buying.

The staycationSimilar to staying in, but 10 times better, staycations are what some busy couples, with not a lot of time to travel, are doing. Book a room in one of the many new boutique hotels for the weekend. The reason we recommend boutique hotels, is because they are easier on our wallets without compromising on the ammenities. Get some quality alone time in and keep that “Do not disturb” sign where they can clearly see it. Until you order room service, that is.

HOROSCOPE

LibrA (Sep 23-Oct 22)You may hear from a lost friend or lover. This will turn your week upside down, having you lost in the land of what if’s. Maybe this is the perfect time to rekindle that which was lost.

sCorpio (Oct 23-Nov 21)This week you will be strengthening those ties and enjoy true bonding sessions with your close ones. There will be love in the air, and you’ll be spoilt for choice.

sAGiTTArius (Nov 22-Dec 21)An event will make this week go topsy turvy. Think of it as an opportunity for positive change. Worry not because this change will mean only prosperity for you.

CApriCorn (Dec 22-Jan 19) There will be a wave of fortunate events. Although you can do a lot with being in this unexpected place, you may find yourself lost and disconcerted.

AquArius (Jan 20-Feb 19)Minor failures or distraction will have you on the edge this week. This is a week full of possibilities – anything can happen. Keep your cool and you’ll be fine.

pisCes (Feb 20-Mar 20) Your pessimism needs to take a backseat this week dear Piscean. Your worry may drive yourself into panic. If you’re forced to address anything unexpected, take a breather and then find yourself a mild solution.

I’ve been dating someone for the past three years and we got hitched six months ago. The one thing I have always loved and wanted (as any woman would) was a beautiful ring of my choice. I have given him more than enough hints, tips and we’ve even gone ring

hunting before. However, when it came to the ring he chose to propose to me with, it was nothing like I imagined it to be and it really broke my heart. It’s pretty and not too bad, but it’s not what I envisioned. I’m not sure if I can tell him this or even if I should consider telling him this, but I know one thing for sure – I totally cannot see myself wearing this for the rest of my life. Should I consider talking to him about this?Z

Q

Ringing alongDear Z,Sometimes there are a few things that are best left unsaid. However, having said that, if you really hate the ring he so lovingly chose for you, perhaps

you can gently mention you’d like to change it. No matter how understanding and loving he may be, be prepared for him to at least be slightly hurt by your hard heartedness. It would be better if you waited until after you’re married and settled in, perhaps even for your first anniversary to tell him that maybe you’d like to revamp it.

Get creative with your throwaways

| Adila Hoque

Let’s face it - most of the things we throw away, we do it for a solid reason. However, there are tonnes of different projects you can do with your trash can items that actually make for stunning home decor.

Read on to find out how to keep your dumpster free of re-useable items, and give your home a little decor boost. These projects are quite easy, take little time and also help you re-purpose the trash into something useful. Yes, you know, Bangalis do not like throwing things away.

1. Table to deskTurn a broken table into two multi-purpose desks. This is a great idea

for tables that might be damaged at the centre. Simply separate the two sides of a table, and affix them to the wall.

2. Broken plates for ground coverYes, if you have children around, you most possibly get a lot of these. I know, it is not easy to see a part of an otherwise perfect dinner set

Fancy trashrotting under layers of garbage, so here’s what you need to do with it. Instead of filling the ground space around your plants with pebbles, use these multi or mono coloured ceramic pieces to give it a more exciting look and texture.

3. Broken ceramics into posh plantersUse all of your broken teacups, plates and saucers to decorate a terracotta planter. They will look unique and beautiful without you having to put in too much effort.

4. Lights from broken globesNow, many of you may have known about this particular trick from long ago, but this never gets old. When your globe is going off at the seams, mount the lights inside them to create a very unique and fun lampshade.

5. Broken crayons + Empty jars = Colourful candlesYour kids’ broken crayons normally end up in the trash, but for once, you can actually make something useful out of them. Melt the crayons and pour them in colour by colour, keeping the wick stand upright at the centre. Also, remember that the older the jar, the more classic your candle should look.

6. Broken chairs to veranda swingsYou can finally get rid of the noisy, crippled chair in your guest room. Cut its legs off and attach thick ropes to the four sides and hang it from your veranda’s ceiling. Ta-da! You just made yourself a brand new swing!

Chocoholics rejoice| Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

Whether you’re trading Hershey’s kisses with your bae, or bingeing on Toblerone while crying over a Ryan Gosling flick, or even just biting into the silky sensations of a Lindt truffle because you deserve it, one thing is for sure: chocolate and Valentine’s Day go hand-in-hand the way panta bhaat goes with Pohela Boishakh.

If you needed any more reason to bite into that rich, seductive delight, we’ve got plenty

Stressed out? Have a KitKatDark chocolate is said to relax blood vessels. This means lower blood pressure, which in the long run, is good for the heart. Numerous studies have also linked dark chocolate to stress relief. In fact, eating dark chocolate every day for just two weeks have shown a marked reduction in stress hormones in the body. And you know what that means? Less stress means less collagen breakups, which leads to younger, firmer skin.

The skin I live inWhile on the subject of skin, chocolate with a high cocoa content is rich in flavonols, which help your skin protect itself from UV damage. A regular consumption of dark chocolates also reduces inflammation, which is good news for anyone suffering from skin conditions such as rosacea, acne and wrinkles.

Brain trainAnother positive outcome of the anti-inflammatory properties of chocolate is that it can help heal brain injuries like concussions. A recent study has also found that flavonols can help treat mild age-related memory loss.

Not the doctor’s enemyChocolates make you fat, right? Not always. A March 2012 study showed

that a regular consumption of chocolate leads to a lower body mass index (BMI) than for those who ate it less frequently. In fact, nutritionists recommend chocolate milk as a post-workout beverage to get all the nutrients you need after you sweat. Also, remember what the dentist told you about sweets and your teeth? Researchers at Osaka University, Japan discovered that parts of the cocoa bean can kill mouth bacteria and prevent tooth decay.

Here’s the catchBefore you go nuts at the Cadbury aisle, however, there’s a catch. Milk chocolate usually has higher sugar and milk content than dark, and not enough antioxidant content to bring the same benefits. If you really want to max out on the boons of the cocoa bean, aim for dark chocolate that has a cocoa content of 70% or higher. But beware, the darker the chocolate, the higher the caffeine content, so don’t try this before bed.

Give yourself the gift of chocolate. Science has your back

My editor asked me to write a guide to love. I think it’s meant to be funny, because I’m 33, fatter than the three fattest people you know combined, and I live in my parents’ basement with a bunch of jerky cats. But in spite of that, I’ve touched almost two women in my life without their calling for help, and only one of them was my mother. (The other was my cousin.) So here’s what I know about love and relationships. Don’t take it too seriously though, because like I said, the only pair of lips I’ll be kissing on Valentine’s Day are drawn on my hand with lipstick, under a picture of Misha Showdagor’s character from Gunda Number One.

I’m writing from a male heterosexual point of view because in Bangladesh, the overwhelming number of relationships starts with the guy initiating. It shouldn’t be that way, of course, but it is. And we men tend to be dumb and inconsiderate. At least, I am. Misha Showdagor’s boyfriend probably isn’t.

Why should she care? This is an old advertising question, ie the “Why should I give a **** factor?” Think about this before you do something dramatic. (In my time, standard practice was either writing a really long letter on some paper torn out of your notebook, or calling her house phone repeatedly until she picked up, saying “I love you” and then hanging up. It might be different now.) From a practical point of view, if you can define the ways in which being with you is good for her, you stand a better chance of getting the girl. From a human decency point

of view, think about the fact that a girl is constantly having guys ask for her number, tell her they love her, making suggestive comments, trying to touch her, etc.

I mean, that’s not even the worst of it. If you get rejected, whatever, you smoke a John Player’s Gold Leaf, listen to Aurthohin’s Odbhut Cchele parts one through five, and play table tennis with local hero Hitlar Khondoker. Worst-case scenario, her father will shout at you. For her though, worst-case is too horrible to consider in a country where “spurned miscreants” (to use journalist

language) show up with buckets of sulfuric acid. So this is one of the only times I will recommend *not* listening to the advice Tabij Faruk puts forth in “Bhalobashar Gushti Kilai.”

When you show her that you’ve put yourself in her shoes and have thought about how you can serve her, it starts things off right. It shows that you’re not just thinking of yourself or feeding your desires. Plus, if you put yourself in her shoes, that means you have a new pair of shoes! Probably red!

Love the personIf you want to be in a relationship with someone, it’s not going to be endless tickle fights and arguments of “No, *I* love you more!” You’re going to deal with tragedy, disappointment, boredom, ennui — and that’s kind of the magical thing. You can only have this if you love a person and not just an ideal of romance. And you must love that person, whoever she is, with all of her faults and adorable quirks and the way she laughs too loud and the way she’s hopelessly unpunctual. (Okay, I’m thinking of a specific person here, and god save you if you fall in love with her.)

Women from every continent, including Antarctica (it was online) have lined up to tell me that they are not interested in dating me. So many women turn me down that I feel like a superstar — how did they even hear of me? I get pre-emptive rejections before I’m even introduced to ladies. They will tell me they do not want to “get too serious” or “have dinner sometime” or “be in the same building as you, you gormless, bloviating jackanapes.” (That last girl had a PhD.)

But every time, they’re happy to be friends. Because that’s the Kazi

secret. If I love you, and I mean YOU, dear beautiful reader — it means that I will love you regardless of whether you want to hold my hand and listen to Sting or Coldplay or whatever terrible music people in love listen to. I will love you at the Western Milon concert, where we’ll go because we’re pals, because — and this is my point — loving someone means appreciating who they are!

Learn to let goOh my Bassbaba, where to begin? I guess it’s pretty simple actually. If she says no, let it go. By all means

make your case to her. Post the lyrics of that song where Sumon Bhai stops everything and says “Beach” before starting a really rocking bass solo. Eat up to five (but not more) boiled duck eggs late at night in the Maghbazar intersection. But then, when you wake up the next day, don’t start bothering her.

I say this mostly out of concern for the millions of girls who are at this very moment, so close to Valentine’s Day, being bombarded with Lalmatia lotharios drunk on visions of Intekhab Dinar saying “I just love you” to his mute cousin in

Offbeat. But I think the true lesson of that natok was that Tahsan was the bigger man. By biking away, he showed that more than touching his forehead while Arnob sang “She Je Boshe Acche,” more than drinking Pepsi, more even than pairing white suits with a Rahul cut, he respected the fact that his lady love made her choice, and it wasn’t him.

Tahsan is many things — musician, actor, professor, relatively hairless in the chest area. But to me, his actions in Offbeat are a shining example of what a true gentleman does.

Style challenge part 2Valentine’s by Viola

As the mercury finally begins to rise, it’s time to pack up the sweaters and shawls. Here’s how to ensure your woolly wonders stay fresh till next winter.

De-pillEven the best sweaters can, over time, form pills, or those little nubs of wool that form over the surface of the sweater, attracting dirt. Scrub gently with a pumice stone to remove the pills, and your cardigans are as good as new. For other problems such as lint and dandruff, use an old baby toothbrush to gently brush off the flakes.

WashMachine washing, even with a wool setting, can stretch out your sweaters. For your extra soft (cashmere), pricey buys, consider hand washing with medium to cold water. Save the wool blankets and shawls for the machine. Adding a few drops of vinegar to the rinsing water can restore fluffiness to tired wool.

StowWhen storing away sweaters, don’t hang them; fold them instead. Hanging can, over time, stretch out a sweater. Freeze your woollens for 3-4 hours, air dry, fold, and pack tight into Ziploc bags, and they will keep, moth-free and fluffy, until next winter.Show your winter wools some love, and they’ll love you back with great wearability.

The end of sweater weather

As we have done before, we challenged Viola, one of our favourite fashion boutiques to show us how they would dress a lady for her Valentine’s date, whether she steps out during the day or night.

“Geometric and bold prints will be a hit in the spring of 2015. For a casual feminine look, maxi dresses in floral prints will continue to rule this year. 90’s fashion of high-waisted, semi-loose trousers with a vintage blouse tucked in is back in trend. This year, girls will like long chic gowns with a medium slit for a fun and flirty sheer look. I know for sure, long kameezes will fuse with gown pattern throughout 2015 and the trend will continue.”

Whether you are as green as the grass in Amsterdam or a seasoned playboy in Vegas, there’s a suave look for any Valentine’s Day date.

BeginnerFirst date? Blind date? Heck, it’s probably your first V-Day with an actual girlfriend. First impressions aren’t always everything, except on this occasion. When it comes to grooming, make sure everything is lined up. Your hair should be trimmed and your beard (if any) should be properly groomed. Just don’t get your haircut the day before the actual date. All these grooming rituals should be an everyday habit, no matter the significance of the day. As for your outfit, and we’re assuming you’re new to the style game, it’s best to keep things as simple as possible. A winner for first timers is a classic one. A spring influenced colour polo shirt, a pair of dressy jeans and a fresh pair of casual sneakers. And as always, make sure everything is slim fitted.

AdvancedYou’ve made your rounds, been around the block a few times. You aren’t a stranger when it comes to dressing to impress. Take things up a notch by rocking those new tasselled loafers with your crisp dress shirt and casual, slim trousers. Adding a few key

What I hate is when I want to wear a sweater, I can only wear it during the evening.

Whereas the day time, it’s quite warm. How do I hold onto my outfit without having to change?

A: Invest in plenty of deodorant, body spray or powder. Sorry, we’re only

half-joking here. Before you step out of your place, it’s always smart to apply some cooling agents that will have your skin breathing throughout the day. Second, mind your fabrics. The weather might be warm, but compared to the rest of the horrible weather we have to deal with, it should feel like bliss. Even though it might be sweater weather, you have to make sure that the fabric is light and breathable. It’s not just about sweaters, you can always swap them with another long sleeve top like the Henley. You’ll be somewhat warm, and won’t hesitate to roll up those sleeves. The Henley won’t lose any of its appeal if you do.

My wife recently bought me this beautiful leather, weekend bag. I’m pretty good

at taking care of my leather shoes and other accessories, but I’m not too sure how a bag should be cared for?

A: Things can get dirty really quick in a crazy city like ours. You can always reach

for those leather care products, and sprays like Scotchgard for protection. If you’re really uptight about taking care of your bag, you should regularly wipe it with a dry soft cloth to get rid of dust. Whatever you do, never use the same products you use to clean your leather shoes. Believe it or not, the materials do differ, as the leather can easily be damaged. However, some rules do apply to all leather goods. Always give your bag some time to breathe. Placing it in an open area after use for a few hours does the trick, and never shove them into tight spaces if it can be helped. You want to retain the original shape as much as possible.

Start the new season off with the right colours

Love has plenty of style you’ve never noticed

Press start

Style like sugarThese new tidbits to add to your fashion choices in spring are going to be head turners. We all have established that the spring season is all about bringing in more colours and lightening the load, so to speak. Here are a few key moves in the men’s fashion game for the new season.

Taste just like ice creamSorbet has always been a lovely and delicious colour to play with. Whether or not your office dress code allows it, there will be plenty of other occasions to make this style move. Your grey suits or blazers can come alive with the coolest touch of your favourite shade of sorbet. This can also be splashed on your dress shirts or pocket squares. Make sure that it’s a light grey coloured item you’re working with, it’ll make the contrast a pleasurable one.

Out of the blueLet’s try and steer away from the usual navy and uniform blues. Instead, take a swing at uncommon hues in the same family. Try putting together teal, slate blue and navy, which are combinations that steer the spring season in full gear. It would be even a better choice to contrast those combos with a soothing brown tone.

Spring royaltyPurple and gold (or at least yellow in our eyes) have been synonymous with European royalty for quite some time. While the Lakers might be the only ones who make this combo look good on a regular basis, you can pull it off too. Yellow, in general, is a difficult colour to pull off when it comes to semi-formal or formal wear. Keep in mind, we’re not talking about those flashy, polyester yellow ties. Try and check to see if you can

get your hands on a smoother tone of yellow that perfectly compliments a purple cotton dress shirt. Lavender is always a good replacement if the purple becomes too dark. And make sure the tie isn’t as wide as Karl Lagerfeld’s preference. Stick to the trendier, narrower and skinnier ties.

accessories, like a minimally designed wristwatch or a weaved leather bracelet, will keep her staring at you for quite some time. Keep the colour tones down a tad. You are, after all, spending the evening with a beautiful woman so keep things sophisticated throughout the night.

ProfessionalWhy should we ever attempt to give you advice on style? Simple, it’s because you are no style god; not everyone can be David Gandy. Consistency is key to every season, no matter the trend. What does tend to happen are those momentary lapses you don’t think twice about. You might have a very expensive wardrobe, or even a walk-in closet, but that doesn’t guarantee you a hit like a Michael Jackson record. Even the best have made mistakes. At this stage, men begin to try something adventurous, treading into foreign territory. Keep it easy and cool, gentlemen. Blazer (preferably linen or light cotton), a polo, dress pants, with a pocket square to match can make the woman you love melt like butter.

No matter the difficulty level, you have to remember to keep your confidence in check. Your clothes nearly tailor-fitted, and don’t overdress to look desperate.

This Valentine’s Day, why not steer clear of elaborate and complicated hair dos? Wear your hair soft and tousled instead. They call it bed-head for a reason.

Long and lovelyStep 1Wash your hair with a volumising shampoo unless you’ve been blessed with loads of natural texture. Condition only the ends as you don’t want the hair on your crown to flatten out.Step 2Apply a styling cream to damp hair and divide your locks into six sections, and clip them up.Step 3One by one, take each section and twist with your fingers, away from your face and blast it with a blow dryer. Step 4Once dry, spritz your beachy waves with a tiny bit of hairspray. It’s important to go easy on the products as too much can make your crowning glory a sticky, unpleasant mess. Don’t worry about it being too perfect. You want it to look like as if zero effort was involved.

Short and sexyWho said short hair can’t be sexy?Step 1Again, what you’re going to want is tons of texture, whether you’re sporting a bob or a pixie cut. Shampoo with a texturising product. The volume enhancers will get the job done as well.Step 2You may need even more volume, so apply an even amount of volumising styling spray on to damp hair. Step 3Use a medium sized, round brush to lift up those roots while you blow dry.Step 4Finish off with a fine mist of shine spray or serum. If you opt for serum, use a tiny amount to avoid the grease factor.

Scentual seduction

The power of fragrances is no secret. They can help transform moods, trigger hunger and even evoke memories, pleasant or otherwise. No wonder aromatherapy actually works. However, we’re not here to delve too deep into that. Since it’s the month of amour, let’s talk about what scents double as aphrodisiacs.

The right fragrances to get you both in the mood

The power of fragrances is no secret. They can help transform moods, trigger hunger and even evoke memories, pleasant or otherwise. No wonder aromatherapy actually works. However, we’re not here to delve too deep into that. Since it’s the month of amour, let’s talk about what scents double as aphrodisiacs.

Au NaturelYes, pheromones will always beat the other contenders. Having said that, please don’t stop showering. While women love the way a man naturally smells and vice versa, not taking care of yourself can make things funky and not in a good way. It’s not the sweat itself that’s stinky, but the accumulation of bacteria that produces B O.

Did you know? Many perfume makers bottle their products with pheromones guaranteed to drive us mad with desire. There is no scientific proof that these versions work, so wait until you spend a bucket of cash on one of these babies.

VanillaYes, it smells like cake and most men love the effect it has on their olfactory nerves. Strangely though, there is a bit more to it than just straight up smelling like dessert. It helps calm nerves so you

can avoid any awkward bedroom moments. Surveys say that a whole lot of men prefer perfumes laced with vanilla. Try to stick to the natural versions though, as the synthetic ones can smell sickeningly sweet. The best part is that you can consume it as well. Try putting a few drops of vanilla essence into your boo’s coffee or cocktails.

JasmineSexy and exotic, the essence of this flower has been known to get both of your motors running for ages. Great for a massage for your loved one, don’t fret if you can’t find the essential oil in our local stores. Boil the petals in water, as you normally would if you were making rose water and mix the concoction with olive oil. You can even mix a bit of it in your bathwater. You’re welcome!

A note for the menCucumbers? Woman are said to be turned on by the scent of fresh cucumbers. And no, it has nothing to do with the shape! Numerous researches have been done on this subject and the verdict is that this unlikely candidate causes arousal in women. Why not buy your lady a few cucumber scented candles for the bedroom and find out for yourself? Another one you can try is almond based products to massage your lady love with. They won’t be able to get enough.

Shopping note:Check out Lavender in Gulshan, or Priyo or Almas in Dhanmondi for a wide selection of hair products.

YOLO when you’re solo

It’s time to fly solo

Ibiza, SpainSun, sand and endless ways to party the day and night away, Ibiza can be the single man’s dream come true, but that shouldn’t deter the ladies that are looking for a good time. Eye candy anyone? This is a place known to be teeming with beautiful people and there is plenty for every gender. Make sure to hit up the clubs featuring famous DJs but remember to fill up on some amazing local fare before your night out. Ibiza has more to offer than just the club scene. Visit some of the many beaches and get your shopping done from the unique boutiques.

Bangkok, ThailandAh Bangkok! The go-to destination for so many locals still has many interesting areas to be discovered and will definitely be easier on the wallet than Ibiza. Soi 11 on Sukhumvit is a street many are familiar with, but why not break out of your comfort zone and venture farther? Thonglor should be on your list the next time you visit Bangkok. Not yet ruined by countless tourists, this gem of a neighbourhood is every foodie’s dream. Especially if you happen to be a fan of fresh Japanese food. It doesn’t just stop there. You can enjoy meals from all over the world and visit some of the many trendy but unpretentious clubs and bars. This is where most expats live, so you’ll find it easier to get by speaking English.

Breathe in that fresh air and truly enjoy your time alone.

Don’t sweat it if you don’t have a sweet Valentine this year. Stop sulking around the house in your frumpy sweats envying all your coupled up friends. It’s time to take matters in your own hands (pun intended). Whether you’re a man looking to frolic on the beach with gorgeous specimens of the opposite sex or a lady who wants to “Eat, Love and Pray” or vice versa, Avenue T’s got you covered. Aphrodisiacs are meant to rev up the love quotient and get you in the mood for some intimate loving. Some claim it’s just a myth we feed ourselves to spice up our love lives, while others find aphrodisiacs to be a true blue way of adding some sweetness to our love sessions. Regardless of whether the science holds true, this week we list out some aphrodisiacs that have a reputation for heightening your romantic senses and igniting the friskier side of you.

Chilli peppersWhen it comes to adding spice to the bedroom, clearly there’s no easier way than to pop some of these exotic spices. Chilli peppers are hot, red and full of promise. If there’s anything that can increase your heart rate, make you pant and leave you feeling utterly breathless, it’s chilli peppers.

BananaYes, as surprising as it may sound bananas are an aphrodisiac. Apart from its highly suggestive shape, bananas also have an enzyme called bromelain that triggers the level of testosterone production in your body. Moreover, it also allows for some intense love sessions, thanks to the potassium and vitamin B that help increase your energy levels.

ChocolateRich, smooth and just oh-so-sensual, nothing melts in your mouth as beautifully as the feel of chocolate. If that’s not reason enough to

excite you, then the love chemical phenylethylamine (PEA) that is also present in chocolates surely will.

HoneySweet and luscious, honey is the ultimate sign of reproduction. Back in the day, brides and grooms were given an alcoholic drink made from honey to celebrate their “honeymoon.” Honey also has boron, a special substance that manages estrogen and testosterone levels in the body.

CoffeeIf anything can wake you up, it’s our beloved coffee. Revving up our energy levels, increasing our heart rate and easing blood flow, coffee is the ultimate stimulant.

Whipped CreamNot only does this look like a tuft of desire, whipped cream is reputed to have women swooning with breathless abandon. While there is no proof to suggest the claim’s legitimacy, it’s always fun to get your share of this creamy delight.

WatermelonWhat you believed to perhaps be an innocent looking fruit is actually the slycopene king. In other words, it can relax your blood vessels, enable blood circulation and give you ample reason to get you in the mood for some fun.

Olive oilThe benefits of olive oil are endless. In ancient folklore, olive oil was used as an aphrodisiac. As an excellent alternative to saturated fat, olive oil also promotes internal lubrication. Need we say more?

StrawberriesThis seductive fruit is all about femme sensuality. Known as the symbol of Venus from the times of ancient Rome, this is the ultimate tool of seduction. Rich in both folic acid and vitamin C, strawberries not only are an aphrodisiac by sight, it also increases sperm count and sperm motility.
