Three wedding favours you can make at home and on a budget

Not all weddings have wedding favours for their guests, but when they do, it’s always more about the packaging and personalisation than about the gift itself. Truth be told, it’s not as much as about what you’re gifting as wedding favours as it is about how you’re gifting it. Usually considered to be a costly luxury that can only be afforded when you’re organising weddings on a big budget, this week we help give you three wedding favour ideas that are affordable, creative and uber stylish to turn ordinary gifts into stunning wedding mementos.

Fortune cookiesInexpensive and very easy to create, custom made fortune cookies can be your way to wowing your guests with something out-of-the-box. Monogrammed with your name and full of quirky sayings, these cookies can be a fun way to leave your guests with an anecdote worth sharing time and again.

You’ll needDecorative paper (you may use wrapping paper)Double-sided tapeA large bottle lid to use as a templatePencilPrinter (optional)

DirectionsTake your wrapping paper and begin tracing circles using your bottle lid all around the paper. Cut out your circles. Take one circle and fold it in half to make a crease, make sure the printed part is on top. Once the crease is made, turn it around so that the patterned side is out. Rotate your circle so that the crease you made is now vertical. Then fold the circle horizontally in half without creasing it. Hold the folded half circle using your index and thumb finger. Using your other index finger push the centre of the circle on the crease you made. This will result in the corners of the half circle to turn upwards. Keep holding and pushing the circle until the corners are pulled in to take the shape of a fortune cookie. If that doesn’t help, use a bit of the double sided tape to stick the corners together. On separate papers either print or write messages for your guests. Cut them into small pieces, fold and place inside the fortune cookie.

Match made in heavenAnother inexpensive way to leave a wedding favour for your guests, matchboxes can be easily designed and decorated to create stylish and personalised gift box. Fill them up with miniature candies of your choice and you’ve got yourself an incredibly stylish gift that is as much of a pleasure to look at as it is to devour.

You’ll needPrinterPaperMatchboxesGlueScissors

DirectionsMeasure your matchbox. Using your computer, print out a personalised design to paste on the matchbox. You can use your initials, your name or even a small thank you note. Print out the paper, cut it into the shape of the matchbox and paste it on top. You may leave the matches in the box, but if you think it’s an unimpressive gift, you can fill it up with a note or small candies.

Wrapped with love Forget about the expensive chocolates and extravagant candies. Think simple – perhaps skittles or smarties? Instead of going for overdone square gift boxes, try out this striking and exciting candy packaging to add colour to your wedding. Line these wrapped up smarties and present them with an initialed signature for that personalised touch.

You’ll needSoft tissue wrapping paperThin lace of your choiceSmartiesPrinter

DirectionsTake your tissue wrapping paper and roll it out. Make a line of smarties near the edge and measure how much paper you will need to wrap around it. Cut your wrapping paper into equal sized squares based on your measurements. Using your printer, print out the sticker you want on your wrapped candies. Cut out the stickers and paste them onto the candy wrap one at a time. Allow them to dry. Once dry, begin assembling the smarties in a row and wrap them up as you would wrap a single candy. Tie the two edges with ribbons of your choice.

There are those of you who are well-versed in tech language, then there are those who don’t have a clue what certain terms mean at all. Here’s a short guide for mobile device owners, just to clear the confusion for the average consumer.

SymbolsIn every phone, you’ll see the little significant letters on the top of your display, letting you know of the type of network is in place. You’ll see E, 3G, H, H+ or 4G. The last symbol, also the fastest of the bunch, will be absent since we don’t have that type of speed in Bangladesh just yet for our mobile data services. E stands for the extension of GPRS, also known as EDGE; this is in the 2G network. 3G is faster than the GSM network and its successor. H and H+ stand for HSPA and HSPA+. H is faster than 3G, while H+ faster than the H.

PerformancesQHD is fairly new technology for flagship phones. Quad HD means it’s four times the resolution of HD, having at least 2560x1440 pixels in display. It has a greater resolution than Full HD (1080p) but not as many as 4K, which you won’t be handling anytime soon in a mobile. Another “quad” term comes in the form of a multi-core processor. Quad-Core Processor is like a dual-core processor but with four cores instead of two. As obvious as it sounds, it’s much faster than a dual-core. This is part of the CPU, not to be confused with the GPU, like the Adreno 330. GPU stands for Graphics Processing Unit, which handles the display and animation of visual elements.

The Sony Xperia Z3 Tablet Compact is ridiculously slim, waterproof, packed with powerful specs and you can play the PlayStation 4 on it. No joke. It might be an attractive gimmick, but you can’t find this feature on any other tablet. Keeping an exclusive feature aside, we take a look into what it really has to offer.

DesignPure and simple, the larger yet smaller device is in the same design DNA as the brand’s flagship smartphone. At 6.4mm thin, it may feel a bit fragile but no less comfortable to hold. The 16:9 aspect ratio also makes watching movies better than the iPad Mini. Another advantage is the microSD card slot hidden under the waterproof flap to

the side. Its 8-inch display is full HD (1920x1080 pixels) and is still crisp, even if it doesn’t have the screen power of the iPad Mini.

FeaturesOut of the box, it’s set with the 4.4.4 KitKat with the company’s own signature user interface. Along with its unique UI, Sony has to have a host of native apps of their own stuffed in. Again, these are nothing new as you will find a familiar look to any other of their mobile devices. Under the hood is a tad different, of course. The 2.5GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 quad-core processor is paired up with 3GB of RAM. With or without unnecessary native apps, you’ll be able to browse and navigate smoothly throughout the tab. And don’t worry about this device’s charge either. With a 4,500mAh battery, you’ll be able to crank out 13-hours on heavy use, which was determined in a video-loop test by CNET.

With a standard 8-megapixel rear camera and a 2-megapixel front camera, there’s plenty to be

The iOS and Android app Over is a beautiful mix of costume fonts and lively artwork that can be used to level up your everyday photos. We’ve seen plenty of these apps before, free ones at that, but they have plenty of limitations. With in-app purchases, just like in Over, the free version of those photo editing apps can only take you so far. Okay, it’ll cost you to download this app, but don’t turn away from it without giving it a go.

Over isn’t just about impressing your followers on Instagram with your creative skills. In fact for the creatively in tuned, this can be a platform to show the world your work and what you can be capable of. Through various social networks and the many editing options, Over

can be your best outlet to share your artwork on the go. While it may not have detailed features like Photoshop, this can become the perfect substitute for the desktop software for your smartphone. Again, it’s the added advantage of taking your work in one hand.

As stated on their site, this app lets you, “nudge, size, rotate, fade, copy, centre your artwork and text, tint, crop, and stretch your text.” In addition, there are many colour choices that will make texts and artwork blend in the way you want. Over is still a new app, which means there are plenty of characteristics the developers will be adding and working on. And they take their service seriously. You can send a message directly from the app to the

happy about with this tablet. It may not have the incredibly impressive screen resolution like the iPad Mini or the Galaxy Tab S, but it’s the other features and specs that cover all the other necessary departments. At roughly under Tk50,000, you really are getting a proper Android tablet.

2014 Tata Indigo Manzaroad rage

There is always a massive traffic jam in the Town Hall area of Mohammadpur. There can be a number of reasons behind this – the countless number of schools in that area, the large number of vehicles or even the adjoining market place. However, one major problem which we fail to see at times is the fact that the buses are always kept parked on these roads. The roads by themselves are pretty narrow, and a major portion occupied by these vehicles further affects traffic movement.

Now that we have brought this into the light, it would be an easy option to blame the bus owners. But we need to ask ourselves why these people take such risks to begin with, and pay bribes to the authorities to park their vehicles on the road? The answer is right in front of our eyes – the lack of parking space in the capital city. Like all major problems, the root cause of this one too traces itself back to the government.

According to Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, there are 603,166 registered vehicles in Dhaka city. Providing a parking space for all of them in an area of just about 315-square miles is really difficult to say the least.

Nevertheless, instead of spending millions on installing escalators to ascend footbridges or powering the decoration on Hatirjheel bridges, the government should make a long term investment in regulating the number of vehicles operating in the city and once that falls into place, they can allocate parking lots in different parts of the town. To make it more sustainable, the authorities can impose some sort of bill to use these facilities depending on the size of the vehicle. Making laws stricter which control the licensing of vehicles will further help regulate the number of vehicles operating on the roads.

Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Sends it to us at [email protected], or post it on our Facebook wall.

When launched in 2009, this mid-sized saloon was more spacious than cars that were a couple of steps up the ladder. Even though, that should have been translated in terms of huge sales in a value-oriented market such as ours, the Manza didn’t get any success at all. But Tata had hoped otherwise. To turn things around for them, Tata has updated the Manza and rebranded it as the Indigo Manza to make it more desirable.

ExteriorThe Indigo Manza is based on the Indica Vista’s platform; it retains the similar Vista family look. However, the crisp lines and the subtle chrome inserts, tell a different story altogether. The more prominent hood, the new trapezium-shaped grille, and the three-barrel headlamps add to the stance of the Manza.

On the other hand, the rear end of the Manza is quite chunky and thus lacks appeal. With a combination of the wedge-shaped tail lamps and chrome strip on the bumper and boot, it rather looks bland from the back.

InteriorSince it shares the same Vista family genes, one may expect the Manza to retain the Vista’s rather daft interior styling and not to mention the shoddy built quality. But no, both the Manza and Vista have different design teams and the interiors of both cars are galaxies apart! The Manza has a more aesthetic dual-tone interior. The plastic quality is much better than the previous generation Tata vehicles. Functions such as the steering mounted audio controls, integrated six-speaker, USB

and auxiliary inputs, Bluetooth and digital driver information system are all standard features on the Manza. It also sports a white-backlit four-dial instrument cluster and the tachometer needle’s backlit changes from white to red at higher revs. On the bright side to fine tune your driving experience, the

Manza has driver seat height adjustment with lumbar support and a tilt-adjustable steering.

PerformancePowering the Manza is a 1.4-litre SAFIRE petrol engine that is borrowed from Fiat’s power-plant stable. This double overhead cam SAFIRE produces 90bhp and 116Nm of torque paired up with a five-speed manual transmission. But Tata has remapped the engine and redesigned the gear ratios for a better fuel economy. The electronic throttle control (ETC) on this vehicle makes the accelerator pedal very light, reducing driving fatigue. Though, the light pedal feels dead and reduces the sharpness of the throttle, nevertheless, the car handles it well if once the pedals are used in the right manner.

SafetyWith ABS, dual front-airbags, HVAC electronic control and collapsible steering system, this car is fully loaded with modern safety features.

Tata Motors has aggressively priced the Indigo Manza considering the overall package that it offers. It is much larger on the inside and the outside when compared to other cars in the same segment. Attractive features, ample rear seat legroom and a decent boot space, added with decent quality plastic make the Indigo Manza a complete value for its money.

Your wedding ceremony may have been glorious, but the odds are it was kind of tiresome and took a heavy toll on both of you. You get home to find an exquisitely decorated bedroom and just want to kick those shoes off and chill. Surprise! This may not be as easy as you’d think as different members of the wedding party can tend to linger on, putting a damper on you and your loved one’s privacy. Here are a few ways to politely tell them it’s time to go.

The eldersThe candles are lit and the fresh flowers strewn around are intoxicating, but your collective army of well wishing aunties and nanus want a piece of the action. Well, maybe not the “real” action, but they want to inspect all the beautifully arranged elements of the bedroom, check the thread count of your new sheets or even want to take a short nap on your new bed. What? It’s no surprise that elder deshi relatives can be very intrusive and try to pass off annoying behaviour as well wishes. This is where your close cousins can come in and save the day, or night rather. Pull them aside and let them know you don’t want to offend your relatives, but at the same time would like them to make their exit. They should be able to diplomatically whisper in your nani shashuri’s ear and tell them to take a hike in the most polite way possible. If they still won’t budge, wink at them and tell them you’re ready to supply them with new grand kids to spoil.

Telling them when to call it a night

The eager photographerAs if it wasn’t enough that the famed DSLR wielding man with the ever popular Facebook page was all up in your business, even when you were trying to calm those hunger pangs with the massive roasted goat, they may want to take a few shots of your bedroom as well. They will want to capture the scattered rose petals on the bed that translate into pure art. Heck, they may even want to take a few shots of the bride and groom in various poses to add to the amazing wedding album they will be putting together for you. When you’ve had enough, don’t pull any punches. Grow a pair and tell them to leave. Tell them you appreciate everything and show them to the door.

The friend squadYour friends love you and have probably worked hard to make sure your big day was a memorable one. As awesome and touching as that may be, wanting to chill into the wee hours with the newly hitched couple can lead to an awkward situation. It’s no one’s business whether you two may want to get frisky or if you’re too knackered and just want to help your bride remove 134 bobby pins from her head and pass out. Getting rid of your posse should be the easiest out of the three groups. You should be able to make a small gesture: like tilting your head towards the direction of the door. Assure them you will have plenty of time to hang out in the very near future. They won’t mind.

This week we look into our very own colourful wedding households to identify the top four kinds of people who are either full of themselves, or are brimming with unbelievably annoying characteristics that drive you up the wall.

The control freakUsually one of your close ones, he/she is always the first to come to the bride’s rescue filled with golden promises of how everything will be “okay.” Usually the elder sibling or a cousin, they do have good intentions at heart but somehow lose themselves to the wedding frenzy. While it’s great to have someone to take on the workload that involves a wedding, it’s quite another thing to be ordered to wear, act and behave in the way they think fit. They often forget that what you need is a helping hand, not a bossy control-freak.

Negative NancyNo matter what an ideal match you make, or how perfectly courteous your family has been, there will always be one negative Nancy. The always irritated, constantly on-edge, nose-in-the-air character is the reincarnation of Kumud from Devdas. Think of a permanently

From the overbearing aunty-jee to the annoying elder brother, there’s always someone to get on your nerves

restive sour face, and a foul mouth to match. Don’t even bother to please this one because

none of your efforts will come to any avail. Word of

advice: ignore.

BridezillaSnapping at the smallest

things, losing it over a lost earring and shedding tears

that would put Star Plus to shame, there’s no one quite as obnoxiously overbearing as our Bridezilla. If there’s no Bridezilla, there clearly is no wedding. Word of caution: this sort of species is permanently suffering from the that-time-of-the-month syndrome so tread carefully. Very carefully.

The nosy auntFrom the dala gifts you’ve received to the amount of gaudy gold ornaments you’ve not received, it is ALL her business. From what your in-laws wore to how they smiled, your beloved aunty loves to indulge in demeaning, full-fledged gossip sessions to bring shame to your family or theirs. With only one goal in life - filling her constant hunger for attention by poking her nose in places where it doesn’t belong, she always has her hands full.

| Avenue T deskI was married for six years with a 3-year-old child. My husband and I separated three months ago not because of any

of us cheating or anything of that sort but we just weren’t getting along. Every day was a constant struggle. Ever since he’s gone I feel so alone and ill at ease. My family has abandoned me because they think I should have stayed and worked it out while his family fully supports his decision. My child is still so young and it breaks my heart to know that I have left her without a dad

because of decisions we’ve made. I feel so lonely and desolate I can’t function and I know my daughter feels the same especially when I take it out on her. How do I deal with this now?

A breaking of a marriage can be really hard on partners, especially when children are involved and

so much is at stake. It’s a difficult and emotionally draining process but you will get through it and recover. As a single parent with such a young child it must get hard

on you to deal with the day-to-day issues but remember that you really are not alone. Seek the support of your friends if you can’t trust your family. Join a club that you enjoy and socialise and find like-minded people to help you get through. Go to places where you can get chances to make new friends not only for yourself but for your child too. Also, remember that it is okay to feel upset but remember not to take it out on your child – find other outlets to help you let go of all this negative energy.

Now, for most men, it is usually a little difficult making room for another individual since they are completely in love with their little space they have in their rooms. Well, they do it all the same. And you may not notice, but usually it is harder for the bride because she has to move into a completely new house and call it home for the rest of her life. She needs to adapt to a lot of changes and nine times out of 10, she makes the compromises for you, so maybe it is on you to try and ease her into the whole process.

1. Throw the dirty socks and underwear (or anything you haven’t washed in over a month) away. Maybe you could try and make the room smell a little more welcoming.

2. Change the drab curtains and maybe ask for her opinion to

pick new ones.3. Throw away the old dresser and

get a new one that has enough space for the both of you.

4. Quit hogging all the table and drawer space. She has her stuff to stack away too.

5. If your bedroom has enough space, throw away the single/twin bed and get a queen-sized one. Everyone loves beds.

6. Women love decorations. You could maybe have a photo of you two framed and hang it in your room to keep those memories alive, and also to let her know that yes, it is now her home too.

7. If you already don’t have one, get a mirror that is large enough to fit both of you in the frame. It will become a hassle when you will have to get ready and suit on together.

8. Transfer your Xbox/PlayStation to the living room, unless your to-be wife is a gamer too.

9. Increase closet space by going through old clothes and re-thinking which ones you really don’t need any more.

10. Get a dressing table, if you don’t already have a large one. If your room is lacking space, you could get one of those drawers that go on the wall behind a full length mirror. There, conserve space.

11. Try and renovate the room altogether. Change the old mattress, get a softer one (if that’s what you’re both comfortable with).

This is your first step to letting your life partner into your life. Make it special.

Making room for two

What’s a Bangladeshi wedding without some kookie-ness spilled here and there? Here’s a listing of some of the craziest wedding traditions from this part of the hemisphere. Enemy at the gatesThere he is, the handsome, impressively dressed groom, confidently making his way to the altar in his 50k worth sherwani and pagri, when who shall he counter at the entrance? It’s none other than the bride’s mamato bhais, fupato bons and chachato khalas. They stand in between the groom and the blushing bride like a Mexican standoff or a rugby match with 200 people on each side - and all this for a noble cause - to rip him off until he hands the last penny out of his wallet to the bride’s younger siblings as a token of appreciation. The white bedsheetAn age-old practice was to adorn the newlyweds’ bed with a fresh, new, white bedsheet to test premarital abstinence (specifically of the bride). But thankfully that has been chucked out of the norm as it was nothing short of disrespectful but rumour has it that it is still part of many wedding rituals in Bangladesh. Moolah flauntingThis has been made popular in our wedding tradition by all the aunties who make it their business to outdo the bride with expensive bling and clothes. Don’t, under any circumstances, point torchlight at them – the aftermath could be blinding. Nevertheless it’s always fun to watch them join the shindig and bless the couple.

When pre-wedding butterflies turn into stress induced hives

Pre-weddingstressmanagement

Planning a wedding takes a lot of time, effort and energy. Whether you’ve started planning yours six months back or a year ago, chances are one thing or the other somehow won’t go exactly as you expected. There are thousands of things to pin down on your checklist, and it is not easy to take care of them all single-handedly. A wedding can be stressful but there are ways to deal with the pre-wedding stress, wedding day stress and post-wedding emotional agonies even in the middle of all the chaos and trauma.

Signs of stress: Wedding stress includes a wide range of symptoms such as stomach aches, headaches, sleep problems, poor concentration, moodiness, irritability, and racing thoughts.

Tips for relieving wedding stress:If you are aware of these symptoms of stress overload, then it is high time to take care of them to reduce your tension.• Meditate: A wedding comes with

a lot of tasks and you might feel overwhelmed while you’re at it. Meditation may help reduce stress in situations like these. It will only take a few minutes of your day to clear your mind of worries. Take some time out of your schedule for meditation and let it relax your brain, mind and your muscles.

• Exercise: In between organising and planning your wedding, you might feel the need to shed those extra kilos and stay and feel

healthy at the same time. Don’t sweat it, exercising will help now. Not only will exercising help you stay in shape, it will also relieve stress and tension. Engage yourself in exercise for about 30 minutes a day. Whether you’re at the office or home, grab those dumbbells and sweat it out.

• Eat: It is natural to worry about how you will look in your wedding dress and many brides and grooms, in an attempt to lose weight drastically, stop eating

altogether before the big day! But they forget about all the negative effects of this action - it will not only harm your body, it will affect your mind as well. So eat properly and maintain a good, healthy diet. Visit a nutritionist if necessary and stick to your diet chart as the big

day draws near. And dear brides, please eat on your wedding day. Starving yourself on your D-day is the worst thing you can do to yourself.

• Take care of your body: The stress will surely take a toll on you – it might even be visible on your face and body. Now is the time for some pampering and taking care of your precious temple. Make an appointment for a body massage, a facial or even a spa treatment – whatever your heart’s been longing for. Don’t ignore those precious knuckles of yours – go for a manicure and a pedicure, it will help you unwind in addition to staying clean.

• Stay connected: Share your feelings with your future wife or husband. Exchange thoughts, ideas and your worries as well, it will help you two figure out where the roots of your anxiety are. The burden is lessened when shared and especially when it’s with your soon-to-be better half.

Since accidents don’t announce themselves before they happen, here’s a list of things to keep handy in order to prevent a wardrobe malfunction.• A mini sewing kit. Basically,

needle, thread, and a tiny pair of scissors, for that unexpected rip.

• Safety pins and bobby pins.• Hairspray. Not only can you tame

the flyaways, you can actually spray some onto your skin to prevent your underwear from hitching or slipping.

• Lipstick, nail polish and remover pads. For touch-ups.

• Breath mints. The bride is going to be up on that stage for a long while, with people coming over to hug and kiss her.

• Deodorant. For the same reasons as above.

• Band-aids. Not just for cuts, these can be a great source of relief for when the shoes start chafing and causing blisters.

• Spare earring backs or “push.” Because you know you’ll lose the originals at least once.

• Blotting paper and tissue. Those sun-lamps and camera flashes will get hot and bothersome soon enough.

• Aspirin. Be it the heavy veil, or the noise, or even dehydration, a headache is a foregone conclusion.

Styling tips for the women in the blushing bride’s lifePut together an emergency kit for the bride

It may be one of the biggest days of your life, but guess what, your family and close friends feel the same. It’s a huge deal for all the important ladies in your life but sometimes they seem to get their outfits all wrong. Horribly and embarrassingly wrong at times. Let’s avoid the many faux pas that can ruin what can be a perfect night

What about the rest?

Sisters If you are the younger sister of the bride, don’t try to age yourself up in matronly wear. You can go as bright as you want. Like chiffon? Wear it. Prefer modern, printed silks? Go for it. When it comes to the jewellery though, don’t overdo it. Avoid wearing a noth and a tikli at the same time. That is probably what the bride will be wearing and you absolutely cannot outshine her. Keep it classy as well by not showing a vast amount of skin.

Friends and cousinsIf you happen to be a relative or a close friend of the bride-to-be, there is a chance that she will present you with a sari to wear on the occasion. Respect her wishes in this case. You may not want to wear the net and lace confection of fabric, but it’s not about you. Don’t sweat it too much. Since she is your friend and knows your taste in clothing, she probably won’t torture you in that way.

The othersSpotted in a handful of recent wedding events, there is always that one lady that looks like she intentionally showed up dripping in gold to outdo the bride. This is a big no! Save it for your own big day.

The groom’s crazy exYou know who you are. Do not show up at an ex’s wedding looking to stir up some drama. Don’t go there!

What’s in your bag?

Mother of the bride(Aunts too)Hey mama, there is no need to want to be completely invisible in a plain kota sari. While these are completely appropriate for the gaye holud, celebrate your daughter’s special day in the classiest way possible. Think soft silk, Dhakai katan, gadwal and even benarasis. Don’t forget about high-end jamdanis, the epitome of elegance, when you’re out shopping. When it comes to colour schemes, choose soft champagne shades, soft yellow or peach hues. An important tip to remember is to balance out your bling. If you opt for a heavy neck piece, keep the earrings simple. Go for footwear that is pretty yet comfortable as you’ll have to be on your feet greeting guests. It should be all about grace. Exude it.

Growing a moustache and a beard during “Movember” is for a good cause, except it only lasts a single month. Does this mean the job is done and shave away? Of course not! You’re a man, dang it. This winter, it’s all about channelling your inner warrior of ancient lore. Well, perhaps a bit more neat and trimmed than the ones sported by the Norse gods. Whether it’s a stubble or a full grown lumberjack status, here’s the right way to keep things as manly and stylish as possible. Not to mention in having the ladies swoon over you.

Level settingFirst things first, you’ve got to decide how far you want to go with the facial hair. For most men, a stubble can be developed from three to five days, whereas going past five days is a full, legitimate beard. It’s vital to keep things trimmed and lined up because just like a full beard, things can get out of hand very quickly.

Weapon of choicePhilips’ Norelco is a very popular

brand in the world of beard trimmers. You don’t necessarily need to purchase a Philips but buying a beard trimmer is a must. Trimming the beard is as important and time consuming as regularly shaving. Expect to spend between Tk5,000 to Tk6,000 for a quality beard trimmer that you can find at stores like Mustafa Mart at Bashundhara City.

Keeping things in lineAs mentioned countless times before, it’s not just about keeping the length in control. It’s also about lining things up, whether it be sharp lines at each angle or simply getting rid of stray hairs. Remember, sloppy is never a good sign so make sure your cheek lines and neck lines are tidy and under control.

Pamper groomingThe toughest part of growing out and maintaining a beard is the unavoidable itching sensation and ingrown hairs. This is where deep cleansing comes into play. Try to find a daily face wash that has

glycolic acid in it. Even if you’re left with the face wash you have now, it’s always important to moisturise afterward. Repeat after us, “mois-tur-ise.”

What, you didn’t think it was that easy to keep a beard did you? Did we mention how this wins points with the ladies? Oh, you bet.

Are shorts ever appropriate for an evening party? Does it depend on the venue or

impression given by the hosts?

Unless you’re home or at the beach, keep your shorts in the closet, fellas. Even if

you’re simply dropping by, dress appropriately. If you show up and the host is up to his or her dress code, consider yourself a style sin. We’re talking about an evening shindig here, there are certain procedures and rules you cannot break. As for the venue, it really doesn’t matter unless it’s some kind of a pool party. Surely, the hosts will let you know what kind of party it is. If you ever find yourself confused about the dress code, you should always ask in advance. It’s not too difficult to reach for your phone and call the host of the party to make certain you’ll be dressing appropriately. And in this day and age, you should know better than to be wearing shorts to evening events. You’re a grown man so you should dress like one.

I love going to Nando’s quite often, and recently with a very good friend of mine.

Funny enough, I’ve never been to Nando’s with this particular friend. I later realised he eats with his hands at Nando’s. I thought you were supposed to use utensils while dining out, am I wrong? Isn’t that the gentlemanly thing to do?

Gentleman or not, you really think pizza was made to be eaten with a fork and knife?

How about a table of fresh-water crabs? So you see, it’s perfectly fine to eat at Nando’s with your hands. In fact, they encourage you to do so. It’s like eating fried chicken, except it’s healthier. And, well, a bit more on the unnecessarily expensive side. But hey, how can you resist that Peri Peri?

A couple of winter staples to keep you warm and stylish

Tis the season for manly facial hair

Rough and rugged

Dynamic duoWearing a leather jacket over and over again can become really boring, real fast. It shouldn’t be a surprise that old school staples from our youth can make their way into our wardrobes today, substituting for that sweet leather jacket. The majority of us may not have the cash to splurge on a fancy coat but we can definitely take advantage of what we have in front of us.

Welcome to the hoodHoodies, for quite some time, have been the perfect combination of comfort and warmth. For many it’s a symbol of relaxation and pure laziness. Well, as you’ve guessed, times have changed. The hoodie can

now be seen worn with blazers or semi-casual suits. While

we won’t be taking things too far, we’ll keep the new line of fitted hoodies for casual purposes. But don’t be discouraged, if you have the know-how, you are more than welcome to pair it with a blazer.

Bombs awayBomber jackets look incredible for those semi-casual occasions or even with office wear. Nowadays, you’ll see a slight fusion applied to the traditional bomber jacket. We’re talking about faux-leather or “pleather” and nylon. There’s no need to feel fake when you decide to wear one of these, it’s perfectly acceptable. However, we recommend you aim

for authentic leather. Quality in your investment is always encouraged. And don’t confuse coated leather with faux-leather either. That shine you see on jackets are actually meant to look that way.In addition to these two, you’ll also find plenty of hooded jackets that can be as stylish as the rest. And don’t expect to pay more than Tk3,500 for either of the jackets mentioned.

Why should the ladies only have to worry about primping? Men need a few helpful tips too. Well, some men just seem lost and need a lot of them. No matter what category you fall under, here are some things you may want to do before your wedding day.

7 daysUse the last seven days before the events to hit the gym and tone up your body. Stock up on your vitamins and eat nutritious foods as well.

5 daysTry on your various outfits. In case there are any issues, you will still have a bit of time to make minor alterations. Take a trip to your trusty dentist and get a proper cleaning too.

3 daysInstead of saving skin treatments for the last minute, it’s best to get them beforehand. This gives you enough time to allow your skin to get back to normal. Groom those unruly eyebrows. There is no shame in getting rid of the dreaded unibrow.

The big dayGo on and get a clean shave. Make sure your sherwani or suit is clean, pressed and runway ready. And please get a manicure. Manicures don’t just mean nail polish. Buffed and filed nails are always a bonus and real men know that. A pedicure won’t hurt either.

Food Republic starring:

Continental palate pleasers The new eatery is just about hits, no misses

| Khan N Moushumi

In the rise and fall of all the sprouting eateries around town, it’s hard to tell which ones will stand the test of time and which ones will crumble. But we have high hopes for Food Republic, the new joint at 35 Kemal Ataturk Avenue, Banani, Dhaka. Why you may ask? Well for starters, from the chocolaty drinks, to the purely divine Thai appetisers to the Oriental dishes, everything comes with an affordable price tag. Ivory walls, dark wooden seating and pendant lamps light up the simplistic décor, creating an upbeat ambiance of a spacious joint that’s bustling with friendly staff as they emerge from the kitchen with one platter after another.

DrinksWe kick off with an Orange Lemon Mint (Tk119), Nutella Shake (Tk189), Oreo Shake (Tk169) and an Ice Lemon Mint (Tk89). The Orange Lemon Mint is a sweet and sour concoction packing an addictive, tangy punch that we loved every bit of. The Nutella and Oreo shakes are creamy and have a thick consistency. But the green Ice Lemon Mint, which is nothing short of a sweet, minty temptation that’s too hard to resist, has the upper hand of the lot.

StartersA much hyped appetiser on the menu and one of our favourites at Food Republic, their Grilled Squid and

Octopus (Tk239), although slightly on the dry side, is superb. It comes with a neutralising chilli sauce and is served on a bed of thinly sliced cabbage. The perfectly balanced out spices dominate the dish, making it taste truly otherworldly.

Yet another fabulous bargain, next up is a marvelously executed Chicken Cashew Nut Salad (Tk249) that comes smeared in an alluring sweet sauce, stacked on a neat porcelain platter. The crumbly chicken strips with a

hint of perky mint leaves bring out added depths of crispness, tempered with sliced onions and nuts roasted to a caramelised crunch.

Their Gai Ka Bung (Tk199), had it not been overpowered by a burst of salty sharpness, would have been perfect. Unlike anything we’ve tried before, with a layer of minced chicken sandwiched in between two crispy sheets of patti, it’s accompanied with a hummus-y flavoured, white sauce as a dip.

Mains As for their mains, we first try their Black Pepper Beef (Tk199) with Steamed Rice (Tk89). Anchored by what tastes like temptingly dark oyster sauce, the beef is brilliantly cooked in a thick hot gravy, punctuated by diced, green capsicum, all the spices being potent but not overpowering – just the way we like it.

While we feast on their Tom Yum Cream Pasta (Tk249), Basil Chicken (Tk199) and Spicy Beef Noodles (Tk199) – all with proportionately sourced ingredients and perfectly complementing each other, the one

dish that truly has us transfixed is their Sea Food in Mushroom Sauce (Tk269). This Thai sea food dish, infused with garlic and pepper, drenched in thick mushroom sauce and delicately studded with basil leaf, is so good that it has to be tried to be believed.

What surprises us most is that the joint just DOES NOT have any mediocre offering. As soon as we settle on one dish as our favourite, the next one outdoes it by a mile.

“I tried the Grilled Squid and Octopus at Food Republic and it was too spicy. If you’re not a ‘jhal’ lover, then don’t try it.” – Raunak Monir

“It’s nice but didn’t like their burgers. Patty was watery. Along with mayo the burger had wasabi sauce in it. It was different, but not my thing. Orange lemonade had too much sugar. Other than that the rest of the food is great!” - Ahmed Rabib Towsif
