Venue: RAOWA Club

Inner Peace and Meditation Workshop

Venue: EMK Center

see: GothamCreated by Bruno Heller, Gotham premiered on September 22, 2014. It is based on DC’s comic’s Batman franchise, particularly detective James Gordon and Bruce Wayne. Initially set on casting a light on Gotham’s early days at the Gotham City Police Force, the idea later evolved to include Bruce Wayne and the origins of the Batman villains - Penguin, Riddler, Catwoman, Joker, Poison Ivy, Scarecrow, Hugo Strange, Harvey Dent and Mr Freeze. At Captain Sarah Essen’s Gotham

City Police Department, detective James Gordon is newly appointed who teams with Harvey Bullock to solve one of the most cutting-edge murder cases at the time - the murder of Thomas and Martha Wayne. As he proceeds with the investigation, Gordon forms an alliance with Bruce Wayne that furthers his conviction to catch the killers. He later confronts some of Gotham’s future villains, and the unlikely friendship between Gordon and Bruce helps form the boy’s future as the Dark Knight.

read: The Paying GuestsFrom the best-selling author of Fingersmith and The Little Stranger, The Paying Guests is rumoured to be Sara Waters’ finest achievement so far. It is a romantic crime-filled story that paints life in a different time. In the early 20s, London is intense and Mrs Wray and her spinster daughter, Frances are forced to invite lodgers due to the absence of a bread-winning family member. As Lillian and Leonard Barber, a young couple of the “clerk class,” moves in, the regular routine of the household is shaken to bits. As the story unfolds, we realise how much of an effect the new tenants have on Frances, and as frustration reaches its apex, we see how devastating those effects really are.

Watch: A Walk Among the TombstonesBased on a best-selling mystery novel by Lawrence Block, A Walk Among the Tombstones is an American crime thriller that premiered on September 19, 2014. Directed and written by Scoot Frank, the film stars Liam Neeson as the unlicensed private investigator and former NYPD cop, Matthew Scudder. Scudder is hired by a drug dealer Kenny Kristo (Dan Stevens) to hunt down his wife’s murderers in New York City. The PI later learns that this is not the first time the murderers have committed such a crime, and it was definitely not going to be their last. As the lines between right and wrong blur, Matthew chases these terminators to the ends of NYC.

Five ways to funk up old mirrors using these fabulously easy tips and tricks

As the go-to accessory for most decorative walls, mirrors can either make or break the ambience of your room. The ideal decorative focal point in your room, it’s often hard to go wrong with a mirror. Visually enlarging your room, adding both dimension and glamour, even the plainest mirrors can be turned into beautiful pieces of art with a few DIY tips. Here’s a listing of our top five favourite ways to funk up your mirrors and add a decorative sparkle to your walls!

First crushThis crushed mirror barely requires any extra tools and looks incredibly stylish!

You’ll need• Any mirror (large or small)• A hammer• Glue gun• Glue• Newspaper

DirectionsPlace your mirror on a newspaper. Using a hammer or any strong, hard object, lightly hit one corner of the mirror. Using glue to paste on the back of each chipped piece, start gluing it back like a puzzle piece. It is okay to be slightly clumsy as that is part of the charm of this vintage piece. Continue with the rest of the mirror until you have it all glued together.

roped for lightYou’ll need• Two to three metres of rope• One circular mirror• Glue gun• Glue• Paint (optional)

DirectionsHeat your glue gun and place it aside. If you’d like to paint your rope in a different colour, use acrylic paint and dry it before you start your DIY project. Once dry, take the rope and begin wrapping it around the circumference of your mirror. Use glue to make sure the rope is secure and then wrap it around a second time leaving just enough to help hang the mirror on the wall. Glue the second wrap carefully to ensure that it doesn’t come undone.

pVc dramaThis PVC inspired mirror is incredibly stylish and looks stunning on a bare wall.

You’ll need• PVC pipes• Saw• Mirrors of

preferred shape

DirectionsTake your PVC pipe and start slicing it into 1-inch pieces. It’s advisable to get it done at a local hardware store if you’re not too comfortable with cutting the pipe. Be careful with the measurements or the overall look may be choppy. Measure your first slice of the pipe and then place your mirror on a flat surface on a table or floor and chalk out your design. This way you can figure out exactly how many pieces of sliced PVC you may need. Once you know, turn the mirror around and start gluing each piece to the back and outwards until your design is complete. Some pieces can be used to place directly on your wall to create decorative motifs.

pooled visionBoth thrifty and oh-so-artistic, this DIY technique will help revamp an oldie into a gorgeous new centre piece for your home.

You’ll need• Plastic spoons, at least 30 pieces• Circular mirror• Paint• Glue gun• Glue

DirectionsMeasure each spoon both vertically and horizontally. Then measure the circumference of your mirror to figure out how many spoons your mirror will need if you place each of them vertically pointing outwards. Once you have the calculations down, paint each spoon in a colour of your choice. Turn your mirror on its back and begin placing each spoon on the back, one layer at a time. Keep turning the mirror around from time to time to see how it looks. Once done with the first layer, start with the second layer by placing the spoons halfway down the back of the spoons in the first layer. Do this a third time if you want to create a third layer.

reflective playA creative way to make use of old badminton or tennis rackets. Ideal for a play room or just the hallway, let your imagination run free!

You’ll need• One or two old rackets, with

the strings removed• Mirror cut into the shape of

the racket hole• Cardboard

DirectionsPlace a thick cardboard behind the racket and trim out the edges so that the board fits perfectly within the racket. Place the board and glue it to the back of the racket. Take a mirror in the shape of that cardboard piece and fit it with glue on the board to create your new racket mirror.

It doesn’t matter if you have a new iPhone or not, the updates will still roll in to better the Apple experience. Here’s how to prepare yourself for new iOS updates so you don’t encounter any inconvenience along the way.1. Compatibility is the first thing

you should check. You need to be aware that some updates require higher specs and certain devices. The iOS 8 is compatible with iPhone 4s, iPhone 5 (5s & 5c), iPod Touch 5th generation, iPad 2, iPad 3rd and 4th gen, iPad Air, iPad mini and mini with retina display.

2. Make sure you free up some space before updating. The last over-the-air iOS 7 update was around 700MB, but users needed to make sure at least 3GB of space was free. The iOS 8 will require a bit more, so be aware. If you don’t know where to start, go ahead and delete apps that you rarely use or have been sitting there for ages for no use at all. You can also move your photos to iCloud, Dropbox, or Google Drive.

3. Once the basics are out of the way, connect your device to your computer to check how much space is available while the device checks for the update. You’ll also have the option to back up your device. The chances of something going completely wrong, like losing all your data, are very slim. But you can never be too sure so it’s better to back your device up into your computer. This works best if you have Wi-Fi set up nearby.

There’s one thing in particular to watch out for. Older devices might suffer from going into the next level of software. There have been plenty of complaints that it drains a lot of the battery so perhaps you might want to hold back on the upgrade or buy a new phone.

Motorola finally produces a proper flagship

Here’s a list of beautifully designed apps to help with your day-to-day

The new Moto X from Motorola actually looks and performs like a leading smartphone. The changes aren’t drastic but significant enough for it to have a fighting chance in the Android market. The new version might look and feel like its earlier model, but there are noticeable changes to its design and display.

DesignThere’s no taking a back seat when it comes to the looks and build of the new X. For one highlighted difference, the new model boasts a 5.2-inch screen, which we can all agree is the industry standard. It has also been bumped up to a beautiful 1080p HD AMOLED display, which has a pixel density of 423-ppi. The biggest difference is of course the all metal frame around the phone, while remaining balanced once held. In addition, Motorola seeks to get even more personal. The 4.4.4 KitKat ran Moto X also gives you

the opportunity to swap the back cover. There are plenty of colours to choose from but its variety of real wood back plates are the real attraction. For example, there are bamboo, teak, walnut, and ebony finishes.

FeaturesThe X functions from its 2.6GHz quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 chip, backed with 2GB of RAM. The camera has slightly improved, naturally. Its 13-megapixel camera has a 4K video capture capability, which may come as a nice bonus. However, for some it may be a bit of worry with its 2,300mAh battery. Again, it’s a small bump from the past model. For regular use, you can push out a little over eight hours from the battery. But for the average consumer, this shouldn’t be too much of a problem. Talking about problems, it still lacks an SD card slot so you’ll have to settle with either the 16GB model or the 32GB one.

SpinMeA very interesting way to get the day started. Many of us moan and groan when having to get up early in the morning. There are countless times when we’ve reached for the snooze button, resulting in an unfavourable situation. SpinMe makes sure you get your lazy, tired tush up from the get go. How, you ask? The only way to turn the alarm off is by placing both of your thumbs on the screen and spinning around in that position. This app is free to download on both Apple and Android devices.

LumosityHere is an app that challenges the brain, making good practice for your intellect. It’s a beautiful process of training your mind so that you can stay sharp at

any waking hour. 15 minutes a day for three to five days a week, you’ll be able to take on exercises that have been created through scientific research. Think of this app as your brain’s personal trainer that lets you play games that’ll assist you in discovering what your mind is able to accomplish.

HuminThere’s a scene in “The Devil Wears Prada” in which Meryl Streep continuously leans towards Emily Blunt’s character in order to put names to faces at an important event. After she hits a mental block, Anne Hathaway chimes in with the right name just in time before the

two parties greet. With Humin, you probably will never have to face that problem. This is a brilliant app that gathers as much information as you can get from added contacts to your phone. It captures all the information and presents them to you as you would naturally think. Humin is free to download on Apple devices, soon releasing for the Android users as well.

road rage

Battle of the loudest

| Tausif Sanzum

Durga Puja celebrates the victory of good over evil but when will we win over the noise monsters on our roads? Sitting on the eighth floor in my office in Panthopath with the windows and doors shut, I can still hear the honking of vehicles from the roads. There is no use drawing attention to the official papers highlighting figures and facts about the noise pollution created and how they severely affect our health as most likely those papers are the ones in which peanuts are being sold at traffic intersections.

You are on a rickshaw in a jam and the cars behind you start honking like there is no tomorrow. All you want to do at that moment is get down, walk up to them and ask them where exactly do they expect the rickshaw to go in the traffic jam?

You are in a car and since the roads are so narrow, you can hardly turn it around. However, the rickshaw pullers have to use their bells and as if that’s not enough, they will resort to using their mouths which serve as loud horns leaving your driver so confused that he will end up blocking the road further.

You are just about to cross the road when you realise that there are vehicles coming from all sides. There is no traffic signal to stop their movement and even if there is any, anyone hardly cares to abide by them. Keeping your life on the edge you decide to cross the road and just then the honking from all sides starts leaving you in a condition of utter chaos with a high chance of being run over.

The dilemma which arises is how exactly should one move around in this city – on a rickshaw, in a car or by foot as none of them seems very reliable.

Got a peeve to share about the state of the city’s roads and traffic? Sends it to us at [email protected], or post it on our Facebook wall.

Top city commuters

Ford FiestaThe 2014 Fiesta is a truly brilliant car in its own rights, blending a top notch driving experience with a modern and sophisticated design. This fantastic little car provides a driving experience that is beyond its class. The fact that the Fiesta isn’t so small anymore, there’s a lot of space and it simply feels like it has succeeded to grab the drift from the class above it.

Kia RioThe 2014 Kia Rio, with its aggressive and sporty look, marks its territory in the class of much more expensive vehicles. This visual appeal from the exterior follows into the interior as well. Buyers looking for fuel economy in particular aren’t going to be let down with this efficient model. But if power is what you desire, that is where it will let you down.

Toyota YarisWith the 2014 Yaris, Toyota still continues to supply its customers with a quality car that has remarkably less fuel consumption, surprisingly comfort and stunning features. It might not be big on space but it is definitely big on luxury. The immaculate versatility and Toyota’s renowned reliability make the Yaris a perfect day-to-day commuter.

Hyundai AccentThe 2014 Hyundai Accent is pretty much the same car it was a couple of years ago. It is amazing how it manages to feel like a bigger car than it really is. With less harshness over rough surfaces, the ride is quite smooth. It is mind bogglingly fuel-efficient. The 2014 Accent does not shy away from making a case for itself as a substitute for a number of larger vehicles.

Honda CityThe Honda City still administers to deliver the best package in the class. Even the likes of the ever-reliable Toyota Yaris or the exciting Ford Fiesta can’t keep up with it. The 2014 Honda City remains on top, leading with a stylish exterior, quality interior, superb ride comfort and brilliant handling.

My parents are splitting up. They’ve been together for more than 20 years and now they have decided to end it. My father cheated on my mother for four times - with four different women. It is not easy looking past mistakes as big as that but he is my father no matter what. I was always taught that family sticks together no matter what happens and now my family is falling apart and I cannot do anything about it. My baby brother is very young and he loves both the parents very much and I do not think he’d take it well at all. I don’t know how to make them change their decision - if it’s any of my business anyway. I don’t even know where to look for help; everyone is giving us the sympathetic look everywhere we go. What should I do?

I am so sorry for what you are going through. No matter how old the children are, a divorce or an unhappy relationship between the parents is devastating. Even 30-year-olds, whose parents divorce, do find it very difficult; after all we take our parents as always being there together, for us. If your parents are determined to go ahead with it, it may be better in the long run for you and for them. It is difficult for a partner to forget and forgive adultery – though it is possible - but four times, it seems to me

one too many times. What can you do? Love each of them, but most importantly reassure yourself that YOU can be safe even though your parents are not together. Everyday life will be different, your father may marry one of those ladies; do not make them your enemies for your father will be your father for the rest of your life. The same goes for your mother. When you are hurt, talk to your father about you feeling sad but do not accuse him of his deeds, it will not help. In fact, it will drive a wedge between the two of you.

The parental split

| Agony Aunt

I have been dating a girl who is four years younger than me. We’ve been together for almost a year now, and I feel like this is it. I know I’m happy with her, and until last week I thought she was happy too. However, she has been hinting that she is no longer interested in me, and that she should get a chance to really date a few people before making a decision that could potentially change her life. I cannot handle any of this because I have already spoken to our parents about us and they’ve given us their consent. Our families have been friends for quite a long time and if we broke up it will create enough drama to last a lifetime. I do want to be with her, but I will not force her against her will. Even then, how do I explain the severity of this situation to a child like her without creating even more damage?

Q

Strained relations A child like her? She is a child because she is honest? It is a good thing she realises now what she needs, rather

than get married and fool around like many people do. If you love her, give her the space. So what if the parents know about your intention? Wouldn’t her parents and yours want their children to be happy rather than trapped in a contract where one partner is not so sure?

Remember the role of courtship is precisely for the purpose of getting to know the future partner and, if need be, break up the courtship.

Durga Puja is enjoyed with much fanfare across Bangladesh, as the victory of the warrior goddess Durga over the buffalo demon Mahishasura is celebrated. As one of the most sacred occasions for Hindus, they celebrate the festival with 10 days of continuous ceremonies. This includes several rituals, fasts, feasts as well as festive singing and dancing. If you are foreign to puja celebrations and want to join in on the festivities this time around at any of the beautifully decorated pandals around the capital, read on to find out a few quick dos and don’ts.

Do choose the timing of your visit carefully. Since the main Durga Puja event lasts for three days, do your research and then decide which day and what time you’d like to visit. The most popular time for visiting is during the night when the stages are completely lit up and in full festive vigour.

Do exercise modesty. Be modestly dressed so as not to offend the Bengali culture, regardless of which religion others around you follow. However, this does not mean you aren’t allowed to dress up. One of the sayings of Durga Puja goes like “Dhormo jar jar, utshob shobar,” meaning religions may differ from person

to person, but the celebration is for people from every religion, and every

walk of life to enjoy so don’t shy away from that red sari or the

big festive bindi. Do take off your sandals

before approaching the “pandals” (temporary

structures set up to venerate the goddess). The moment you near a

“mandap” (a stage where the puja takes place), you must take off your shoes as a sign of respect.

Don’t loudly repeat mantras if you aren’t clear about each line. During the Anjali (the prayer offering with Sanskrit mantras), many people will repeat each line after the priest. A few of the Sanskrit words may be difficult to repeat, do so quietly so that you don’t distract others with your mangled speech.

Don’t use your left hand to take or receive any offering of food.

Don’t carry too much cash, especially if you are amid a large gathering. Be careful of your belongings and keep an eye out for pocket thieves.

Finally, make sure you join in the festivities and share the joy of the occasion, be it by feasting away or by singing along!

I was dating this guy for six months, and then one day, he told me he cannot be with me anymore. Everything seemed to be going smoothly - better than smooth actually. He told me he loves me and is excited for the future of our relationship, and then all of a sudden he changes his mind. I tried asking him but mostly I ended up getting lost in his vague answers every time. I do not understand the sudden change of heart but would love to. How can I find out what really happened?

Born from the combined power of all the Hindu gods, Durga is the saviour of mankind. Hence the occasion of Durga Puja calls for the most grandest of celebrations. Here are some decorative ideas which you can use to make this festive season delightful for your friends and family

| Tausif Sanzum

Welcoming maa durga

Home of the GoddessThe temple in your house is the most vital place during the puja. Clean it up thoroughly and decorate it with flowers and garlands. Light diya (lamps) all around so that the light emerging from the temple is visible from other rooms too. Change the flowers on a daily basis to retain the fresh feeling in the temple.

Adding the extra streak of coloursAlthough, some people buy new furniture, you do not need to do so if your budget doesn’t allow it. Just change the bedsheets, tablecloths, cushions and sofa covers. Colours such as orange and red add to the festive mood.

The colourful floors

How can a festival as colourful as Durga Puja be complete without an alpana? Make your favourite designs either on the floor right in front of your door or in your temple area. This will add both colour and authenticity to the festival arrangement.

Little artistsIn case your little ones want to be part of the decorating arrangement, allow them to make puja themed paper crafts which you can use as wall hangers. They will not only look nice as decorative items but create a memory which you can cherish for years to come.

Floating candlesBuy a few large bowls; the prettier the better. Fill them up with water and place floating candles in them. Scatter petals all over the water. Place these bowls in the drawing room, prayer place and wherever you may please. Lighting them at night will add an extra edge to your puja decorations. Floating candles of different colours are available at Aarong.

Flowery delightIt is the easiest but most effective way to decorate your house. Buy fresh flowers and put them in vases for a stunning display.

An important tip which you NEED to keep in mind is that in all your creativity do not clutter your home which will affect movement around the house. You wouldn’t want to welcome Maa Durga into a crowded place.

Ayurvedic benefits of fasting during puja

9Take care |

DigestionHindu fasting is normally described as self-restraint from all food and drinks for a single or several days. It’s an essential part of the Hindu religion. According to local customs and individual beliefs, Hindus perform different types of fasts. On selected days, the men fast for conserving their energy by taking simple food or completely restraining themselves from taking any food at all, and thus letting their digestive organs rest. Fasting is a blessing to one’s digestive system. An alteration in the food intake is good for the system. A break in the digestive system only aids in performing it more resourcefully.

PacificationAlong with the physical benefits, fasting has immense religious benefits. Our mind, which is preoccupied with thoughts of taking food, takes a twist to

transcendent deliberation of god, purifying the mind and soul. Fasting is a resourceful brake to the challenging senses and redirects one’s requirements to pacify the mind and soul.

PurificationThe fundamental hypothesis of fasting can be found in the prehistoric Indian medical system called Ayurveda. It is evident that the contaminated materials that we gain from food intake, accumulate in the digestive system and create various types of diseases. We can keep ourselves healthy by regular distillation of contaminated materials. All body apparatus are purified by fasting as the digestive organs rest during the process. A complete fast aids for good heath, and the rare intake of warm lemon juice during the period of fasting prevents flatulence/acidity.

Mind and bodyAccording to Ayurveda, the human body is composed of 80% liquid and 20% solid, similar to the earth. The gravitational energy of the moon affects the liquid contents of the body. The manuscript of Ayurveda firmly recommends avoiding mental stress during fasting. That’s why it causes emotional inequality in human psychology like tension, irritation and violence. Fasting lowers the acid content in the body which helps people to preserve their sanity and therefore, works as the antidote for human mind and body. A healthy fasting brings about the sense of feeling light, increases energy and strengthens your soul. The fasting process cleanses the tongue and makes the breath fresh.

QYou’ve been juggling quite a few very creative career paths -

artist, filmmaker and photographer. Does it ever get difficult to balance it all?Filmmaking, photography and illustration are connected in that I’m making pictures. Although one is a still image and the other is moving and has sound, so there is definitely a difference in the process. Because there is a connection, the balance is already there. It can get difficult when I can’t make enough time for everything - time is always ticking and there’s never enough of it!

QWhat do you personally believe is the key to finding balance?

Making mind maps. On a piece of paper, it can be huge or tiny, I put a picture of me in the middle and write out all my goals around it. These are personal as well as work goals, so health and fitness are in there with film ideas. You can put anything and everything you want - it’s a great way of mapping out a cluttered head. I colour code them and from one main goal I branch out into smaller steps and put tick boxes next to them. As time goes by, the map gets filled out more, things get crossed out and others get added. Putting thoughts from pen to paper - that’s the way forward.

QAs someone constantly in touch with her creative side, what is

the best way to foster creativity in children? Children are way smarter than adults. They have a remarkable understanding of things and they take in information like a sponge. They also have an innate ability to simplify things, which I think we tend to lose when we get older. Fostering creativity in children is easy because they’re completely open to anything. I don’t have children but if I did I would let them paint walls, make things out of recycled materials and watch all of Hayao Miyazaki’s films over and over again.

QDo you think there is anything wrong with encouraging

children to move towards creative expression from an early age? Is there anything called “too early?”

Absolutely not.

QDrawing from your own personal experiences, what role

does your school/childhood play in making you who you are today?Well, my parents are very liberal people, so I don’t think I grew up as protected as a lot of girls. Having said that, we weren’t allowed to go to parties and stay out till late, which in hindsight I’m quite grateful for! I spent a lot of time playing with my cousins, going to both my mum and dad’s village homes and then later, a lot of time watching films. I went to an English-medium school, so we weren’t allowed to speak in Bangla, and I spoke in English a lot with my parents so now it comes more easily. I wish I cultivated Bangla literature because there is so much out there that I haven’t read.

QWhat inspires you?

Travelling. As soon as I leave my comfort zone, I find so much more to be excited about. And when I come back I’m not the same person as I was when I left. Seeing other countries or even other towns or areas can change one’s perspective. And the colours change too. Book stores are especially fun to get inspiration from. Inspiration is really everywhere, but getting out of your home is a good start.

QHow do you define your personal style?

That depends largely on factors that have nothing to do with clothes. It depends on what’s been in the wash, what’s been ironed, how much time I’ve got to get out of the house and what mood I’m in. I’d say eclectic, possibly quirky. I would love to be donned in tailored three piece suits but I end up in a pair of jeans, trainers and a top that doesn’t need ironing. In an ideal world, beautiful clothes would need no ironing.

Q I’ve been noticing more people embracing the maxi dress

trend. I really want to try one, but not sure if they’ll suit my plus-sized figure. Is there hope for me?

A The graceful silhouette of a drapey maxi dress is actually

a great choice for an outfit that’s slimming. Stick to a solid colour, or vertical stripes, and something with a V-neck, which draws the eyes in a vertical line.

Q I’ve recently put on a lot of weight, and among the many

woes I’ve inherited is the tendency to look like a tyrannosaurus when I carry my old purses. Could you please suggest an appropriate bag style for a big girl, so that I don’t have to worry about buyer’s regret?

A Don’t fret. Choose a medium to large bag with a boxy shape

to balance out your newly acquired womanly curves. Not only are big bags glamourous, you’ll now have room to carry everything.

Q I’ve inherited a lot of lovely georgette saris

from my grandmother that I want to repurpose into kurtis and kameezes, but I’m a little concerned that the vintage prints might make me look old. Any suggestions?

A First of all, give us a moment to indulge in our envy. Choose

a modern silhouette and dress up your outfit with trendy accessories and you will be just fine.

life now. Like how you used to towel-dry your hair like a maniac, assuming you’d end up with a cold if the water remained in for a long period of time. This vigorous action actually harms your hair every time you attempt to use this method. Wet hair is weaker than when its dry, which means more breakage and more hair fall. So after a shower, air-drying your hair is the way to go.

Darker the betterHere is something you can be happy about. It’s safe to say 99% of us Bangali men have dark hair. It gives us the advantage to block harmful sunrays from penetrating our scalp. It’s recommended you use hair products in minimal doses. The shine will only attract more heat to your head.

It may not seem like it, but technically, summer is over. We’re still in the transitional period, not fully embracing the style change. While some articles of clothing, like a panjabi, may seem comfortable to wear during the weekends or on special festivities, you’re left with something to be desired. Certain colours, patterns, and cuts can make a huge difference. Let’s do it right this season.

RelaxedUnless you’ve got it done by a tailor, everything off the rack is regular fit. What that means is, with minor alterations, the entire fit will be loose enough for you to sweat freely. Generally, menswear has slightly tightened the fit for a more flattering

cut. We recommend you apply the deodorant on your body before heading out anyway. Another common look is the length of the panjabi will go past your knees. Don’t be afraid to shorten the hemline a bit at the tailors.

What’s your flavour?Solids, stripes, or checks are your usual choices. But take things a little further this season by going floral. The floral pattern is more attractive with better quality fabric, especially when used for the evening ensembles. This is where you need to use your head. Keep the simple and loose fitting panjabi for the daytime, as the evening gatherings

will acquire you to turn it up a notch. This is where the floral comes into play. Soft hues and larger prints make for a sophisticated look. It doesn’t hurt to don a sherwani either.

No exceptionNo matter the style of clothes, there is no excuse when it comes to grooming. Beard or no beard, keep your hair on your head trimmed and tidy. If you’ve got scalp issues, keep things short. For those who have plenty to mess around with up top, heavy and wavy locks are in order. More importantly, keep things natural – lesser the hair products, the better. Keep the heat in mind.

I came across a few bow ties that I ordered online. Would you recommend I wear a regular neck tie or a

bow tie to work?We must commend you on taking the initiative to do something different. Wearing a bow tie to

work is obviously not common, which gives you an advantage. First off, no one else is bold enough to try what you’re aiming for. Second, it’s quite refreshing seeing a gentleman pull off something out of the norm. Keep the colours simple so you’ll be able to incorporate each bow tie to many outfits. More importantly, make sure the size of each tie is proportional to the size of your head. Sounds silly? Better not. If your bow tie is too big, you’ll look like a goofball. In addition, remember to rotate your variety throughout the week.

I might be a little too late to the fashion scene, but recently I’ve been focusing more on my closet. I was

wondering what types of shoes are acceptable nowadays. As I am in my mid-40s, what would look appropriate for me to wear to formal events?

We’re assuming “formal events” are weddings and such. At that age, you can pull off almost

anything - proper lace-ups that is. Brogues are your best bet. They’re the most sophisticated choice of the lot. And it all depends on the colour of the suit or trousers you’re wearing. If you have a grey or navy suit, for example, then brown brogues will make one hell of a statement. Black also goes with the grey and navy but it’s a better contrast if you take on brown. If you want to go black, get your hands on some patent leather lace-ups. The beautiful shine looks best on black.

It’s bad enough we have to deal with our toxic environment taking hits on our scalp. Age takes a toll too, as a majority of us aren’t blessed with thick healthy hair. There are, however, careful steps you can take to protect what you have, while you try to age gracefully.

No compromising with qualityIf possible, stay away from hair products as much as you can. But what you do need to stock up on are specific shampoo and conditioners that will help boost the health of your hair and scalp. They might be more on the expensive side (still affordable), but they will pay off in the long run. Look for terms like “thickening” and “volumising” on the labels. Also look for ingredients such as peptides and silica. Just like anything else in grooming and fashion, this should be an investment not taken lightly.

The jewelled dosalon 101beauty session

With sabah rahmanhair

While there are scores of hairdos that claim to be “just perfect,” not all of them are as on-trend as the ones we’ve featured this week. This feature brings an update to basic updos adding a jewel here and a headband there, without being too precious.

It’s that time of the year and the festivities seem to come rolling along. Going to a beauty salon is a great way for women and men to unwind, relax and prep for big events. However, did you know that there are some basic steps you may not be taking that could harm you?

Hygiene issuesMake sure the person who is threading, waxing, or giving you a facial, washes and sanitises their hands. You never know whose face or other body parts they were touching right before yours. Another important thing you need to ask them to do is to properly clean all the tools before you get a manicure or pedicure to avoid any bacterial infections.

Are they pros?A fan of facials? Great! However, if the person messing with your delicate skin has not been trained properly, they can really do a number on your face. Improper extraction of clogged pores, blackheads and even steam therapy can make you break out worse than falling face-first into a greasy pizza.

BYOB (Bring your own basics)Unless you are a regular at a highly reputable salon, bring your own stash of beauty products with you. You’d be surprised if you knew the kind of low quality products some places use; from shampoos that will strip your hair of its natural oils and dry out your locks, to facial products that may alter the natural balance of your skin. So be prepared!

Retro floralThis look is an update on the basic bouffant-bun as it pairs a messy tease with pretty florals. If you’re in the mood for some floral fun then this updo is right up your alley. Make a short mid parting and then begin teasing your hair all the way from the top of your crown till halfway down your head. Take the lower half of your hair and tie it into a ponytail. Take the tail end and wrap it around the base, securing with pins so that it forms a small bun. With the teased upper section, cover up the inner bun, tucking the long edges of your hair into it as you go. Spray on a misting of hairspray, smoothening out the top and then place your floral head piece like you’re wearing a headband, securing with pins.

The necklace wrapIf you’re low on the headband arsenal, worry not. Take a sneak peek at your necklace collection to find one that can double up as a headband. If you have straight hair curl it into small tight curls, spraying as you go to give that lived-in texture. Leaving your fringe aside, lightly pull back your hair into a low ponytail. For a more vivacious look, try not to make it too perfectly smoothened out as the natural waves in your hair will give this look so much character. Divide your ponytail into two sections. Braid each section using a necklace or even a long yet narrow scarf that is bound to any one of the three strands. Braid the other section in the same manner and then wind each braid around the base of the ponytail to form a large, glamourous braided bun. Secure the ends with bobby pins.

The peek-a-boo ponyWhile the sleek ponytail is an old school favourite, give it a youthful spin by adding a sly braided twist and a few accessories to liven it up. Begin by carefully straightening your hair completely. Section one side of your hair, bunch it up into a thick strand, twist it around and then loosely french braid it till you reach the base of where your ponytail will start. Secure the braid with pins and tie your hair into a sleek ponytail. Use gel to smoothen out flyaways. Pair this look with hair accessories, clips or even bold loose flowers.

It’s time to clean the streets, put on your new clothes and welcome Maa Durga to vanquish all evil. On the eve of one of the most colourful festivals in Bangladesh, Avenue T lists down some of the most visually extravagant celebrations from around the world which you might want to take into account before planning your next vacation

Desert Festival, JaisalmerIndia is home to some of the most vibrant festivals. The Desert Festival is held in the desert state of Rajasthan every year in January or February for three days. The three day long raw extravaganza consists of cultural events, camel races, turban tying competition, polo matches, Air Force display, and the very peculiar but nonetheless exciting mustache competition. The event ends with a spectacular folk music concert under the night sky lighted by the moon and stars amid the Sam sand dunes.

Chinese New YearPeople in China take weeks off from work to prepare for the longest and most celebrated festival held in the month of January or February. Legend has it that once Buddha asked all animals to visit him and 12 turned up. He named one month on each of them and people born in a particular month will have some characteristics of the animal the month is named after. People wear red clothes, give children money in red envelopes, doors and windows are covered in red paper with poems written on them and there is the world famous display of fire crackers. This festival calls for family reunion and people hang lanterns in temples and carry them in parade under the light of the full moon. The highlight is the dragon dance which one shouldn’t miss.

The Carnival of Rio de JaneiroThe Rio carnival has become a standard next to which carnivals all around the world are measured. Celebrated annually over a period of five days in February, the lavish event gives a chance to the world to party from dawn to dusk. The music played during the carnival is Samba which is uniquely Brazilian. The most recognisable part of the carnival is the Samba Parade

which consists of groups from the lowest strata of the society who practice all year round for this event. There are bands in every street you visit.

Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta, New MexicoThe Balloon Fiesta dates back to the 1970s and has now become the premier balloon event in the world. Held in the month of October for nine days, this event attracts visitors with an array of hot air balloon activities. The Dawn Patrol consists of hot air balloons flying before sunrise, Mass Ascensions consists of a number of balloons flying at the same time, and the Special Shape Rodeo gives you a chance to see balloons of various shapes such as piggy banks, cows, etc.

colours of joy

Holi, DelhiWhat can be more colourful than a festival based on just colours? The celebrations start with the Holika Dahan where people have a bonfire around which they sing and dance. The next day is the battle of colours when children and adults come out on the streets and playfully fight with colour guns, water balloons, etc. People also consume bhang laddus. After that they put on new clothes and visit their family and friends. A lot of popular Bollywood music tracks are inspired by this festival.

In Germany, Bangladesh is known as a garment producing country. The label “Made in Bangladesh” can be found on many garments that are sold in Germany. However, currently hardly any piece of clothing is designed in Bangladesh. Although students of fashion design in Bangladesh will produce for markets in the US, Asia and Europe later in their career, during their studies and their work life they have only limited access to information about current international fashion trends. On the other hand, fashion designers from Berlin only know Bangladesh, one of the most important countries of garment production, by hearsay. Within the framework of the international fashion design a project titled “Local International” is about to be launched at Goethe-Institut Bangladesh, where young fashion designers from Berlin and Dhaka are invited to participate in an International Tandem Project taking place in Berlin, Germany, and Dhaka, Bangladesh, from autumn 2014. Goal of the project is the joint development in tandem teams and in consultation with cooperation partners and NGOs. Project results

can be creative solutions, fashion concepts, single products or even collections in tandem teams. The project will start in November 2014 and end with exhibitions in Berlin and Dhaka in Summer 2015, during Berlin Fashion Week. The project will be conducted by Prof Heike
