Tresemme Tres Two Extra hold hairspray | N Anita Amreen

Price: Approx Tk800 to Tk1,000Rating: 4/5

Packaged in a classy looking, large round spray bottle, Tresemme Tres Two Extra hold hairspray is priced around Tk800 to Tk1,000. It’s quite pricey when compared to other hairsprays, however, once used, you’ll begin to appreciate the value for money it offers. When applied to teased hair, it’s light, strong and manages to hold the style without giving your hair the sickly, rock hard look that is so common with other brands. One spray works well to hold more densely teased hair while lighter styles will require a couple of sprays. Despite the layering, your hair is still light to touch and less prone to forming thick white layers that some hairsprays tend to result in.

Overall it works well with up-dos, given its long lasting power and light texture. Hair still looks natural and not overdone. With regular styles, it’s better to give it a couple of sprays instead of relying on a single spray. Usually this helps give the hair a just-left-the-salon look. The only drawback is that the hairspray smells pungent and can be so overpowering that even a few spritz of perfume cannot drown the stench. Best to give it at least an hour to air out before stepping out of your home.

It’s time to make some crinkle fans to survive the hot summer power cuts

We’ve come a long way in the world of technology. As the years go by, we advance. That’s a given. On many occasions we’ve found ourselves pondering whether to buy the latest tech gear or just play the waiting game. While most people are content with what they have now, some may be wondering if certain gadgets are worth the buy.

Recently, the trend has been around smartwatches from all the major smartphone companies. With Google’s Android Wear introducing the new Moto 360 smartwatch to the public, it seems quite tempting. The question remains, are these absolutely necessary? Ultimately, no. It’s a luxury item for the moment. But we also have a little bit of the past to learn from. Decades ago, we thought having a mobile phone was totally unnecessary. If a person needed to get in contact with you, they would have to make a call to your home or office. Mobile phones have gone from luxury to a necessity. Smartphones are literally life savers for many.

As sleek and beautiful the new line of smartwatches are, there’s not enough legitimate reasons for you to purchase one. You remember those wristwatches with calculators on them? They went in and out of fashion pretty quick. However, times have changed. Even though these large companies will continue to innovate to make profit, they’ll also give you reasons to buy their products. In most cases, they accomplish that goal. But you have to keep in mind these are accessories, and accessories you can do without, for now.

For those who have tablets will be able to see the significant difference in pixel density between what’s in your hands and what’s mounted on your wall at home. The HDTVs nowadays are an amazing experience, but you might be surprised to know that picture quality on the much smaller seven to 10-inch screens can produce sharper images. It’s not just about high-resolution though. You have plenty of factors to consider, like brightness, black levels, colour accuracy and range. Not only are you running apps, you’re listening to music or playing videos, and games as well.

With all that on the check list, here are a few tablets that have an amazing display:

Samsung Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4Here’s one of the most pixel-dense tablets in the market. With a 2560x1600 resolution, 359ppi, alongside the packed features from Samsung, this could be worth the buy. The price tag might scare a few people away, but then again it’s on the same range of the iPad Mini.

Apple iPad AirYou didn’t think we’d skip this super thin and sleek beauty. Apple has always arguably brought the best in the tablet market. It’s ridiculously light and offers high contrast with low black levels. And the colour accuracy

is definitely something to boast about, thanks to its Retina Display.

Amazon Kindle Fire HDX 8.9This may not be as pixel-dense as the Galaxy Tab Pro 8.4, but it still boasts a brighter screen. There is more accurate colours, sharp as it can get. It is slightly cheaper than the Tab Pro 8.4, but worth every penny, especially if you’re an Amazon Prime member. Look for a full review of this tablet next week right here on the Tech page.

Keep Shopping from keep.com is a fantastic experience for the fashionably in tuned. While you’ll see a majority of fashion products for women, the app allows you to search, like, and “keep” products from electronic accessories to home appliances. Guys, don’t be shy. This is a perfect app for the times you’re stuck trying to figure out what to buy that special woman in your life. The user interface is aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. It’s a tad similar to what you would see on Pinterest. The beautiful layout makes you want to browse through its handy features over and over again. Keep is very simple in function, as you are taken to a lovely welcome sign-in screen; you can sign in through Facebook or e-mail. Once you’re hooked up and logged in, you’re taken right into the Trending section of the app. Scroll down and you’ll see a list of

items that are in trend for the moment. Keep lets you like and keep those certain items into “Collections.” For example, there’s already a given Wishlist folder and For Others folder.

By touching the little Keep logo at the top left corner of the screen or swiping from the left, you’re presented with a small host of features:

Trending – Here you will find all the current items in trend that others are looking through. My Feed – You’ll be able to follow other users that share the same tastes so you can personalise your Keep feed.Read – Short articles or posts are

shared through this well designed feature. From celebrities to styling tips, this is a fun and quick read.Like it/Toss it – Easier way to “Like” random items that pop in a slide show fashion. But if you don’t like something you just press “Toss” and onto the next one.

These tablets make for one hell of a show

road rage

A hypersport machine that moves as bold as its red-hot, provocative looks

After dawn| Adila HoqueA rumour has been going about town regarding a white Allion in Gulshan; kidnappers in “raincoats” riding this car have been mugging, kidnapping and cutting the good passers-by in that area. The following statement was brought to our attention by this anonymous well-wisher, who has battled one such evening a few days ago.

There were four men driving a white Allion; one of them was behind the wheel and two of them were carrying knives. The third man had his hands deep down in his pockets and I’m positively suspicious that he had a firearm in his possession. I was on a rickshaw, and the car went past us to stop in front of me. The three men got out of the car and grabbed my things; I complied, afraid for my life. On their way back to the car, a police van had arrived, followed by a G4S pickup truck. They ran to their car and I screamed for help. Almost immediately the police started chasing them and the cars disappeared. Later that day, I learned that the police had followed them into Road 108 before losing sight of them. This inability of theirs had visibly saddened the police officer, and even though I wish they’d get caught, I couldn’t be more grateful for my own safety.

when should the throttle body of the motorcycle be cleaned? One main area of maintenance that will make your bike run like new is cleaning the throttle body. If you have been noticing that your bike’s performance has started to lag, the engine idle speed is dropping lower than usual, and your bike just dies out while being stationary, then it is time to clean your throttle body. It’s not that time consuming to clean the throttle body. We at the Avenue T desk suggest that you clean the throttle body every time you go in for oil change. Many of you might think that there is too little carbon build up on the throttle body to be worried about but the fact is, a little bit of maintenance of the throttle body goes a long way.

This Chinese-manufactured 125cc motorcycle emulates a hypersport machine and it represents the encroachment into a sphere of influence up until now owned by Japanese manufacturers. Without a doubt it is one of the brashest contenders to yet to roll down the streets of Dhaka but a more appropriate question to ask would be, “Will we soon see a new chapter in motorcycling?”

DesignThe extravagant 125R was penned for maximum eye appeal. It seems like a studied accumulation of the design elements from some of the most successful sports bikes. If you look at it carefully the front end looks like a wasp and you can clearly see the similarities with the Yamaha R15. From other angles it reminds us of the Ducati 916 without the single sided swing-arm. And the welded tubular frame is something that was common with the MV Augusta. Even though it seems like a gathering of different bike parts assembled in China; its roots lie deep down in UK. Megelli is actually a UK based bike manufacturer that has its headquarters situated in London. The Megelli 125R was designed by the English design studio SLD, which is famous for designing motorcycles for well known brands such as Triumph and Ducati. So, from every angle the Megelli 125R looks sharp and its presence is more aggressive than those of the Japanese bikes in the same performance class.

Performance and handlingPowering the Megelli is a 125cc four-stroke engine that produces 11HP at 8200rpm. Even though it will rev all the way up to 11,000rpm, the screamer unit is quite reluctant to rev after 8,500rpm. But with that being said, the sound from the tuned exhaust is just epic. One twist of the wrist and you won’t be able to get over the eargasm. The 125R will chase up to 135km/h with an average fuel economy of 40-kilometres per litre.

With lowered suspension the ride comfort on the Megelli isn’t all that great but due to the low centre of gravity, the handling in straight line or in corners is fanatical. And the rotor petal disc brakes both at front and the rear add further more to the superb handling of the 125R.

TechnologyMotivating the Megelli is air cooled carburetted engine which is sourced from the Taiwanese manufacturer, SYM. And the wet clutch six-speed transmission makes it a potent contender by the Japanese standards. Megelli claims that the bike weighs just under 300lbs, adding up to a respectable power-to-weight ratio. The whole bike is rested on a cleanly-welded steel trellis frame and a unique T6-alloy trellis swing-arm. And even the brakes fluids are delivered to the callipers via braided steel-wrapped lines.

The Megelli 125R cuts a striking pose as a small repli-racer. It has a competitive power-to-weight ratio and a pretty reliable power train. The 125R has real potentials to shake things up in the entry level sports bike segment.

To protect yourself from possibly encountering a similar situation in the future, you must adhere to the following:• Try your best to follow a crowd;

avoid travelling alone as much as possible.

• Unless it is absolutely necessary, do not venture out late at night - especially not alone.

• When they ask for your wallet, watch, etc., do not resist.

• Always take the most direct, shortest route to your destination. The less time you spend in a quiet neighbourhood, the slimmer your chances are at getting mugged.

• Gear up - carry a cell phone with a fully charged battery, wear shoes more suited for running.

• Try to get out of the house as less as possible just before and right after iftar, as this has been known to be the time when the streets are most frequented by these mysterious men.

I lost my parents at a very young age; ever since, the only parent I knew was my uncle. He brought me up, sent me to university here and then he got me married to the son of one of his friends. My uncle and father-in-law have been best friends for decades. This makes my situation all the more difficult. My husband abuses me - in all kinds of ways. We live with his parents so I assumed once his parents found out they’d tell him to stop. I was wrong - very wrong. They encourage his abusive behaviour in all kinds of ways. The other day I accidentally burnt my husband’s breakfast because I was running late for my office, and my mother-in-law slapped me. I wanted to report to my uncle about this but I figured I shouldn’t ruin their friendship; after all, I am indebted to him. My patience is running thin, and I don’t want to feel like a victim all my life. I wanted to file for divorce; but I have been having second thoughts, especially since I’m four months pregnant right now. I don’t want my child to grow up in a house where his father does not respect his mother. But I’m not sure if divorce is the correct solution to my problem. What should I do AA?

My dear lady,You owe your uncle gratitude and love, and after that you owe him nothing; you do not owe him your discomfort or unhappiness. What you can do, is to go to your uncle and tell him what is good about your life, and then you tell him that life has been difficult but you did not want to bother him. Now things are not too good with your husband and your mother-in-law and you have been abused by them for the last few months/years. You would like his advise on how to go about it. You would like the marriage to work but you find yourself so unhappy and you are worried about the baby. You want the baby to be raised in a loving family but you feel you cannot do so in such an environment.

Tell your uncle that your husband’s parents know about the abuse but they are not doing anything about it. Maybe you could suggest you could go and have a break from your husband to make him realise the situation is really intolerable. You need peace and serenity for the baby’s sake as well as your own.

Please let me know what is the result of this conversation and we will proceed from there. Keep calm, be as positive as possible but tell your truth.

Dear Stranded,Some say there is no smoke without fire but this isn’t always entirely true. Sometimes there truly isn’t any fire, but people talk anyway. For you to be confident and brave enough to love her for who she is, is commendable. However, if she’s really threatening to break up over something like your inability to buy her expensive gifts then this is time for an intervention. Perhaps you are misunderstanding her demands or are reading too much into it. In that case, give her a chance to prove otherwise. Gently explain to her that you cannot afford to buy her all that she demands and that it is hurtful when she threatens to break up over something as materialistic as this. If she sticks around, quits her nagging and is with you, you know your heart is in the right place. If not, then perhaps there really is no smoke without fire. Call it quits before it’s too late.

I’ve been in a relationship with K for the past eight months. She has always had a very bad reputation in our friend circle, and I was continuously discouraged to date her. People called her a promiscuous woman, a coquette and even a gold digger – I’ve heard it all. I never paid heed to others’ comments and loved her for who she was. I just got a promotion at work two months ago. Ever since I told her about my raise, she somehow keeps hinting about gifts she wants me to get for her. It would be okay if they were reasonable demands but they are not! I just bought her two very expensive designer bags last month. This month, she’s been nagging for a very, very expensive watch. She emotionally blackmails me saying I “don’t take care” of her and even threatens to break up. What is going on?

From the window rattler to the quick, muffled shot – men have mastered the art of expunging gas. By now we’ve seen (or heard) all about what men have to offer. While men make a quicker transition from the gentlemen to the carefree caveman, women seem to take a tad bit longer to let you in on what’s really brewing in the backyard.

0 – 4 monthsIn the first few weeks of the relationship, the two are at their best. He’s acting the part of real gentleman, and she, the ever-so-charmed lady love, the epitome of beauty, grace and perfection. In this stage of the relationship, no matter how steamy the two get, when nature calls, the lady will keep herself as tightly corked as a fresh bottle of wine. A storm may be raging in her backyard, but her face will always remain as a mask of serene innocence. Men, too, refrain from letting it rip; the last way he wants to rock her world is with a fart quake. A delightful stage.

5 – 9 monthsThe relationship eases into the honeymoon period and soon that too, is over. He’s wearing sweats and she’s finally going make-up free. Both understand and accept the part-and-package of each other: sneezing, coughing, blowing your nose, asking for second helpings and even zits are accepted. The human side finally

emerge and they accept each other, nose-blowing and all. Gas releases still

demand a minute’s distance and are usually out of ear-shot, but they are

still a potential possibility.

9 –13 months This is when their smelly friend starts becoming a living, pulsating reality that they can’t contain. At

first the stench is blamed on the dog, but soon that turns into a code word for the

shockwave of flatulence that both partners need to get used to. One partner, if

not both, comes clean with their biological exclamations. Men even begin turning the situation into a running joke, sometimes pulling this feat off with style, adding bubble beats to his nightly exercise, much to the lady’s amusement.

13 - 18 months The true intimacy levels have just been reached. Dirty sweats, unwaxed hands, stretches of make-up free days are no longer foreign to either party. Quakes and rattles become customary goodnight signals. Some men even consider this period of the relationship to be the prime time for adding some shabang to the shower playlist. For some letting it rip may even become a competition. Finally, a few months down the line, farting becomes as natural and irrelevant as breathing. This is when the boundaries are truly blown away, or shall we say “gone with the wind?”

Firstly, you must accept that your boyfriend is a raging alcoholic. He has been both emotionally and physically abusive with you and that should be enough for you to take a step back from this relationship and really evaluate the situation. Remember that nobody can

change another person unless that person has the will to change himself. You can cry, cajole, beg but the truth will remain the same – he will resist your efforts the more you try to force him to change his ways. Instead of focusing on him, for once, focus on yourself and really think about what you’ve had to go through. You say you love him, but can you really tell yourself why? He has hit you, he abuses you and demeans you. You must answer yourself and figure out why you believe you deserve to be treated this way. Ask yourself questions and make an honest decision. Do you really deserve this relationship?

- AvenueT desk

aI’ve been in a relationship with F for three years now. We have always been in a long distance relationship, with both of us living in two

different cities. From the offset I knew he had a drinking habit. He drinks over the weekend, sometimes even during the week. The last two times he came to visit me, we went out with his friends and of course, he drank. The first time he got very aggressive about me talking to other male friends. I knew he was just drunk and not in his senses. When we went back home, he slapped me and threatened to choke me to death if I ever spoke to any male friend again – his or mine. This really scared me. He woke up the next day, apologised profusely and promised he’d never do it again. Even when he’s not visiting and is drinking with friends, he gets very aggressive on the phone. Swears at me, calls me names and verbally abuses me. All his insecurities reach a new height and he goes mad with jealousy. I’ve asked him to quit drinking but he hasn’t. I cannot bear to see him like this, I love him very much. How can I help him?

Chime away your worries

wind chimes for your air-senal

DIgs & FInDs decor

| Adila Haque

For hundreds of years, wind chimes have been used as simple and elegant ornaments for our balconies. In ancient China, they were used as scarecrows believing they would shoo away evil spirits. These graceful little devils, however, are capable of serving a higher purpose than decorating your home. According to popular feng-shui ideology, they’re used to get rid of prolonged laziness, combat depression, ensure a balanced flow of beneficial energy in your home as well as attracting happiness, prosperity and wealth.

In feng-shui, wind chimes are one of the most effective enhancers and are also rumoured to be a remedy to many hurdles. The magical sound of the rods swaying in the wind is used to clear negative energies so the environment is harmonious again. In accordance to almost any other form of medication, wind chimes have their positives and negatives, depending on various factors that should affect their placement in your house.

materialWind chimes can be made of many different kinds of materials, the most popular ones being metal, wood, bamboo, ceramic and glass. In the North, Northwest and West, metal wind chimes are a good choice while wooden wind chimes work well in the South, Southeast and East. Ceramic or glass is usually preferred in the NE or SW direction.

Hollow tubes vs solid tubesAlthough there is a constant debate regarding these two types, they’re both known to be equally effective.

number of rodsFour, six, seven, eight and 18 rods are most popular when purchasing wind chimes to raise flow of positive energy, whereas five best suppresses negative energy.

LocationSelect a location for your wind chime where it can have complete freedom of motion. Nevertheless, make sure that you do not hang them in places where there is a chance of strong winds breaking their way in.

In addition to these guidelines, you must also follow the rules listed down below when it comes to picking these little pieces of art:

• Don’t hang your wind chime where you work, eat or sleep. Make sure it is never over your head so you don’t run a risk of being a hindrance to it harnessing its energy 24/7.

• Do your best to find the dome-shaped chimes; they work best as energisers than the flat-topped ones.

Working those musclesIf you have struggled through the first week, your body should already start responding and growing stronger. Intensify the pace this week. If you went walking last week, pull up the pace, walk faster and time yourself. If you have been easing into tabata yoga, then mix up the workout with some beginners’ weight training for about 15 minutes. If the way you roll is by hitting it hard, cardio style, then either try a longer workout or pick out a new set of cardio workouts to keep challenging your body. After doing a week’s workout, your body now knows what to expect. Throw in the unexpected. This will surprise your body and you will burn more calories than you would have if you stuck to the previous routines.

Plating a nutritious iftarAs your iftar plate is a mix of the good and the bad, it’s time you change up the menu to confuse and stimulate your body all at the same. How? Try adding one or two new items to your iftar every day. If you have opted to have a cup of guava and some oats with milk the first day, pick out oranges and some high fibre biscuits like IKO or Muesli with skimmed milk for the next. Every day for this week, pick out a few new items that will give your body a different nutrient benefit. You could also opt for a combination of fruit and veg on a daily basis; for instance have a cup of papaya and some carrots, or some grilled aubergines or broccoli and green apples. Gulp down freshly squeezed papaya juice or grapefruit juice before tucking in. This will keep you hydrated and also act as a bar from allowing any of the grease to reach your beloved love handles.

Sleep easyEating clean shows its perks on everything. You suddenly feel more energetic in the morning? Or are you feeling more agile and light? If yes, then the first week has been good to you. The second week should be sweep clean easy for you to get by. Do get your eight hours of sleep no matter what. Even if you wake up for sehri, eat moderately and please do not stuff yourself! Do walk for about 10 minutes before you rush to bed. Your sleep pattern should improve by now and it should be easier to wake up in the morning. The more organic you eat, the less heavier you’ll feel, and waking up in the morning can be less of a wrestling match.

From being involved in school theatre productions from

the age of nine to becoming the Station-in-charge of Radio Shadhin, your illustrious career has taken quite a few interesting turns. What made you believe that radio was your true calling?

My first experience in radio was as an RJ and I loved

every bit of it! I think radio has a magic like no other. It has the ability to connect and create a bond between people who have never even met. It also enables us to use our imagination, allowing us to create an image of a person, scenario and space. In a society and culture like ours it also has the power to be the platform and the voice of the people or the youth since it’s one of the most personal and interactive mediums. In a country like ours where almost everyone is a cell phone user, radio is literally in every one’s hands, at all times. All these made me realise the power of the radio and I knew that this was my true calling (or at least one of my true callings since I think I am too young to decide on only one path or adventure; keeping my fingers crossed, and am hoping to have many more adventures in the days to come). Anyway, this led to the birth of Radio Shadhin 92.4 FM - a channel whose philosophy is best encapsulated by the words of Bob Marley, “Emancipate yourself from mental slavery, none but ourselves can free our minds.”

When it comes to media arts you have always been a

powerhouse of talent – whether it’s behind the scenes of Radio Shadhin

or debuting on the forefront of Usha Ganguly’s play “Nam Gotrohin Mantor Meyera.” Tell us why you chose this as your theatre debut.

It wasn’t really a matter of me choosing my theatre debut. It

was rather a case of me getting a scope or chance to act in this wonderful production “Nam Gotrohin” – the 44th production

of the renowned theatre group Nagorik Natya Shampradaya. And it has been my great honour and privilege to have been chosen or cast in this play by the renowned and veteran actor/director Usha Ganguly.

You’ve been quite a torchbearer for the empowerment of

women. Do you think this stems from your all women’s education at Smith College?

Smith College has definitely shaped by personal philosophy

in life whether it is about empowerment of women or about my work ethics. At Smith I was steeped in an environment where I felt like I could be anyone I

A powerhouse of talent, this versatile artiste has already had an avalanche of activities this year – from running the show at Radio Shadhin as Station-in-charge to debuting in Usha Ganguly’s play “Nam Gotrohin Mantor Meyera,” she has managed to stay at the top of her game despite her gruelling schedule. The inimitable Sriya shares anecdotes, talks about her love for radio, and why you should never be caught with dirty feet on her bed.

wanted to be. I also believe that I grew up in a family where I’ve had many women role models who are very empowered such as my mother, grandmothers and aunts. The men in my life have also been very supportive in this regard. My father and elder brother, since when I was a child, told me that the world is for my taking and I deserve

the best life has to offer. My family has always sensitised me about the need for empowerment of women in our society so that has been a big influence for me as well. And now my husband is a very supportive partner who encourages me to pursue all I want to do in every way possible and he is a champion on women’s empowerment issues as well. I think all this helps me to strive for empowerment of women.

In terms of your career at this point, do you see yourself

more of an actor or an RJ?

I don’t necessarily think I need to choose one or the other. I would

love to continue with both. But since I have just started acting I would love to put my effort and pursue that properly and fully.

To be declared as a star child all the time, it must seem

burdensome.

Being the child of parents who are celebrities and individuals

who have played a pivotal role in shaping the socio cultural scene of our country is definitely a pressure at times. You always know you are being held up to very high standards and I know that I have to do something crazy brilliant to get people to take notice, which definitely can be burdensome. But being a star child also has its perks for sure! I have access to people, places and scopes to which I wouldn’t necessarily have access to if I didn’t come from the family I come from.

You’ve always had a unique sense of style, what are a few

local brands you swear by?

I absolutely love junk jewellery and ethnic, hip and chic wear.

Some places I love to shop for junk jewellery and clothing are Aarong, Aranya, Ideas, Deshal, Chondon, Jatra, Shoily (online shop), Orange Theory (online shop), Mayali (online shop) Tangail Saree Kutir, Urban Truth, Astorion, etc.

In spite of your gruelling schedule, you’ve managed to

keep fit. Any secret “actress diets” you’d like to reveal to your fans?

I have recently lost some weight. A good work out, a low-fat diet

and plenty of water are what truly work. And oatmeal is a great rice or carb replacement. It has lots of fibre and can be sweetened or cooked with masala. Also almonds (I love slightly toasted) and green apples make great snacks!

Three things you secretly love about yourself?

My confidence and ability to speak my mind, my sense

of humour, my eyes and my curls (yes I am being vain)!

Any pet peeves?

YES! Quite a few actually. Dirty feet on my bed, nasty

bathrooms, body odour, public spitting, burping, picking one’s nose and scratching private parts and the list goes on. Take your pick!

Never slotted with any single genre of art, what’s next on

the cards for you? After your success with “Nam Gotrohin Mantor Meye,” we’re expecting to see more of you.

I’m looking forward to lots of theatre, quite a few audio visual

productions be it television or film.

And finally, on a lazy Friday afternoon, where can we find

Sriya Sharbojoya?

Hopefully (if not at shoots or rehearsals) lazying around in

her pjs at home, spending quality time with her family and loved ones and her spoilt cats!

I have recently adopted the hijab, and am pretty new to this. I want some wardrobe

suggestions that are modest and still stylish. I don’t want to limit myself to salwar kameez only.

And nor should you. We’ll dedicate this week’s column to helping you keep it stylish

without compromising on your faith.

On the goThe extra devout will prefer long skirts and fuller silhouettes that disguise the shape of the legs. Salwar kameez sets are definitely a practical option if you’re out and about and have places to go and things to do, particularly in this weather, but there’s no need to limit yourself. Palazzo pants are a fairly trendy option you can try. With the monsoon bringing the heat down to a tolerable level, you can now throw on a summer cotton cardigan over a loose tank or sleeveless blouse and accessorise with a chic pendant. Something geometric or Art Deco inspired would be your best bet. Finally, use a long scarf with a bold print as your hijab.Dressy casualFor dawats and get-togethers, there are two awesome options you can try. Pair a bold, drapey pantsuit with a blazer and a killer cuff. Or go for a long, billowing maxi dress worn with an open chambray shirt. Both looks are super trendy without compromising on modesty.

Formal and fancyHere’s a riff on the sari ensemble you could try. Instead of the traditional one-shoulder draping that would require you to invest in a full-sleeved blouse, drape your anchal halter style, thus covering your chest and neck, as your adopted dress code dictates. Youtube “convertible dress” for tutorials on how to do this. Now, in lieu of a blouse, wear a cropped bolero. You can now wear your hijab turban-style and rock a pair of statement earrings and still be all covered up.

This rain gets on my nerves. I want to stay dry but I don’t want to look huge in a bulky jacket.

How can I stay stylish without worrying about getting wet?

Well, for one, you can maybe start sporting an umbrella. You really

aren’t sacrificing much apart from a sore wrist. You can always wear a windbreaker. It’s super-light, battles the wind, and keeps you dry for the most part. You could even carry an extra towel in your bag to wipe yourself off later, if you think you’ll melt like the wicked witch of the Southeast. It’s not just about your distaste towards bulky clothes, you have to keep in mind that water will build up and you’ll become heavier. As for the mud, well, just watch your step.

I know that slim fit is the best way

to wear clothes, but is that always the case, even with casual wear?

Slim is more flattering

but you’ve raised a good question. We all know how foul our weather can be in the city. This means you shouldn’t wear clothes that could stick to your body. Yes, that goes for slim fit outfits. Designers are now producing the right fit clothing without it being too suffocating. And that’s the point of casual wear. You want to feel relaxed. As mentioned, you’ll be introduced to lighter fabrics that are cut to fit, allowing it to be more manoeuvrable. More importantly, it’s breathable, which makes tolerating the heat somewhat better.

Most rain gear comes off unattractive and heavy. We’re here to let you know that you don’t have to sacrifice certain aspects of your personal style. The wind, in general, is a very welcoming element in our ridiculous climate. The rain, however, can be nasty. Our unpredictable weather gives us the opportunity to keep things even simpler.

If you’ve got yourself some rubber boots to take on the showers and mud, you’re a step ahead. For those who don’t, there are alternatives to make things work.

The most important accessoryAn umbrella. Don’t like carrying it around? Too bad. Unfortunately, we can’t hop into a Burberry store to grab their signature trench coats. We have to make do. If the wind gets too much to handle, a hoodie does just fine. Whatever you bought and saved from winter can come into effect here. But to keep things simple, while wearing the least amount of layers, get yourself an

umbrella. You’ll be able to buy a quality umbrella for less than TK1,000.

no rubberGet your mind out of the gutter (pun intended). We’re talking boots here, gentlemen. Not everyone is willing to go out to buy a pair for the wet environment. One thing you should never wear is suede. We cannot stress

that enough. Canvas sneakers are your best bet; it’s light, comfortable, and can take a hit when it pours. When it gets dirty, you can simply toss them into the washing machine. If you’re on your way to the office, it’s recommended you wear dress shoes with a little height in the heel. In addition, it wouldn’t be a bad idea to buy some water repellent spray for those shoes.

For every season, there’s a guideline you should follow. The summer is about colours and lightweight clothing. Make it easier for yourself by keeping the right items in mind.

Started from the bottom, now we’re hereFlip flops? For the love of all that is good, stay away from these! Unless you’re taking out the trash or walking around your home, you have no business wearing these. No one wants to see those battle tested feet. Even if you regularly get pedicures, these are a sign of laziness. What you want is to have simple crossover slip-on sandals – nothing that separates your toes. They are much more elegant and fashionable with casual wear. Think leather on your feet when it comes to sandals.

pour hommeFragrances are as important as the rest of your outfit. During the

winter we result to heavier scents for an everlasting effect. The hotter months are the complete opposite. You never want to mix sweat with your cologne. That’s why you see lighter and cooler scents making their faces seen in fashion ads. Look for colognes like, Dolce & Gabbana Light Blue, Burberry Sport, Bleu de Chanel. These will cost you in the range between TK5,000 and TK7,000.

Swapping the denim outMost of you aren’t willing to part from your beloved pairs of jeans, but this season really gives you the opportunity to throw off a little bit of weight. Colourful trousers, in small prints or solid, provide that extra kick into your look. If

you’re already used to wearing suit trousers to work and other events, what’s to stop you from going casual? They are made to fit, and project that sprezzatura attitude.

You left the house with a bare face thinking it was just going to be another drab day at work. That’s all fine and dandy until your boss let’s you know you have a meeting with the board members in 10 minutes about a promotion. What? Don’t freak out. Here’s how you can breeze through this situation and come out on top. Just remember to tote along your make-up bag with you on a regular basis

Let’s talk about some of the products mentioned in the other trending article. Order them from the multiple online stores on Facebook so you are always armoured to deal with beauty emergencies

Easy, breezy, beautifulhot products

Face firstYou’re not going to have time to fully paint your mug. Forget the heavy coverage products as they take too long to blend. Keep a tinted moisturiser in your bag that you can just slap on in a hurry. Use a bit more on the problem areas you need to conceal. Skip the powder. However, if your skin is super oily and resembles a wok at the end of a busy day at a Chinese restaurant, use grease blotting paper - a lot of them if necessary.

EyesLine the inner rims of your upper eyelids with a pencil for instant definition. Use an under eye illuminator to mask shadows or any major baggage. Layer the mascara on thick. Don’t channel Twiggy in this case though. Clumps won’t help you look very professional and in charge.

Lips and cheeksIf you haven’t jumped on the lip tint train, it’s high time you do! They are the most versatile product a girl can have in her bag because you can use it both on your lips and cheeks. You can build the colour up or play it down, depending on how much to apply. If you don’t own any yet, just blend a bit of lipstick on your cheeks for a subtle glow.

HairWe’re hoping that you at least made an effort with your hair even though you sported a bare face. In case you didn’t and your crowning glory resembles a crow’s nest, brush it through and pull it off your face. Don’t have a cloth covered rubber band? The painful brown office version will have to suffice.

Tinted moisturiserPretty self-explanatory, these are lightweight formulas with a hint of colour to them for women who don’t need or want full coverage. There are tons of brands that carry tinted moisturisers, so just pick one that co-operates with your skin best. Do extensive research and read reviews of the ones that catch your eye because once you’ve ordered from abroad you can’t really get an exchange or refund.

illuminators“Ooh la lift” from Benefit Cosmetics is a lifesaver and every lady should be equipped with one. Light reflecting particles help mask the damage done by late, sleepless nights. It’s suitable for all skin tones. And a perfect mid-day perk up.

TintsBenefit Cosmetics was also one of the pioneers of lip and cheek tints when they launched Benetint. This little beauty in a bottle is a sheer rosy stain that can be blended on the apples of your cheeks for a completely natural look. The best thing about it is that it lasts all day. Even after a roll in the hay. It can also be used on your lips and topped off by gloss. A huge number of cosmetics brands now have their own colours in a range of prices.

Hot air balloonIf you are bored travelling by airplanes where you get to see nothing more than mere clouds, then it’s time for you to take a ride where it all began. Hot air balloons provide you with the ultimate flying escapade where one can literally feel the soothing sensation of either flying above serene locales in the Loire Valley of Paris or the wildlife in the Serengeti National Park – just to name a few.

Being on the safer sideIn case you are a little scared about accidents caused in various sky diving activities, you can opt for parasailing. In this you are attached to a parachute which is connected to a vehicle. As the vehicle gathers momentum, you are suspended into the air. You can experience this safe but nevertheless fun recreational activity as long as the vehicle maintains a consistent high speed.

Soaring high in the airA little less extreme compared to parasailing and also more expensive, para-diving is a free flying activity involving a person being attached to a wide parachute shaped canopy. He/she is then lifted to a height from where they can dive freely into the air. Able divers can fly even for extended periods of 2-3 hours.

Rewinding the funBungee jumping has its fair share of fun but it’s time to move over. Reverse bungee gives you a feeling of disorientation but this is what makes it one hell of an experience which you would want to put on repeat. It consists of a two person seat which is attached to two elastic ropes, each hanging from one tower on opposite sides. The passenger seat is kept on the ground with an electromagnetic latch as the wires are stretched. As soon as the controllers switch off the electromagnet, the riders are pulled to heights ranging from 50-200 plus metres. The riders keep bouncing up and down until the elasticity of the ropes relaxes.

Eating outHow can we leave out food from this list? On the 63rd floor of the Lebua Hotel, Bangkok, you can get to eat at the award winning restaurant, Sirocco. If this height is not good enough for you, then we have the world’s tallest building at your service. On its 122nd floor, roughly at an altitude of 1030-metres, sits the At.mosphere that holds the world record for being the “highest restaurant above ground level.” If you feel that we are leaving out on nature, think again. The cliff side restaurant, Berggasthaus Aescher in Switzerland blesses hikers with breathtaking views of the surrounding Alpine area in Wasserauen.

Palate pleasers at Antipasto

18 | Tantalise

review

| Khan N Moushumi

To start off, we tried their Cream of Mushroom/Chicken Soup (priced at Tk180). This creamy, lip-smacking concoction was nothing short of amazing and it deserves 4 stars on a scale of 5. The garlic breath was totally worth it.

Their Virgin Pinacolada (Tk225), served with a drizzle of coconut syrup and coconut milk was equally irresistible with even a creamier consistency. Resisted myself from chucking it all down in one go; this one deserves a 4.5.

Next it was Lasagna Al Forno (Tk700) in order. Here’s the deal with it – it had green spinach pasta cooked al dente in olive oil. However, since it’s so easy to go wrong with creamy pastas with tomato sauce slathered on, I found it a little too pungent for my taste. This has to settle for a 3.5 for now.

We then tried their Fore Rib Eye

Steak (Tk1,125) and goodness gracious, did it taste irresistibly foodgasmic! If there’s one thing we’ve learned about the Italian restaurants in Dhaka is that they sure know how to mess up a steak. But Antipasto did it justice. Accompanied by spaghetti Bolognese that was moist and not soggy, this one gets a solid 5.

We still had some room left for their Chicken Teppanyaki (Tk850). Now I know it may seem a little odd for an Italian restaurant to be serving Japanese food, but one of the entrepreneurs of Antipasto, being a huge sushi fanatic himself, insisted on incorporating teppanyaki and other sushi items in their menu. The chef did a great job preparing the teppanyaki right in front of us on the iron griddle, tossing in the right amount of spices, vegetables, rice, and finally topping it with garlic chips – all cooked to impress. A 4.5 for this one.

Comfortably curled up on 138, Gulshan Avenue, Gulshan-2, Antipasto has more than just pasta and steak to offer. Simple yet tasteful, the décor stands out with chic wooden columns and suave blinds in the background. Ivory lamps adorn the ceiling like little trinkets, and couches and tables are neatly aligned on clear sheen floor. However, the service, although friendly, could have been a bit quicker.
