The Neighbors A family has recently relocated to the “Hidden Hills”. Gradually they realise that every neighbour living in the community is a species from another planet that has taken human form. These aliens have some really peculiar habits. Catch this sci-fi and comedy series on Star World.

PhilomenaJudi Dench stars as Philomena in this movie. The story revolves around a mother who confesses to her daughter that 50 years ago she had given birth to a son out of wedlock in a convent and then sent him off for adoption. With the help of a journalist she then tries to trace her long lost son. If you thought that Angelina Jolie’s “Changeling” was a bit over the top, watch this much subtle and thought provoking movie based on a similar theme.

Wuthering HeightsIf you thought Romeo and Juliet was too candy floss, read Wuthering Heights, the only book written by Emily Bronte during her lifetime. This is the passionate yet violent love story of Heathcliff and Catherine Earnshaw, who are childhood sweethearts. However, as they grow up, their social standing divides them. The moors, estate, and characters have a very gothic undertone. You will hate the characters at times and sympathise with them at others.

The world of music was happy, everybody had the most appropriate song to go along with their moves. Until a whole new type of sound started creeping into the world of music. The tri-stellar collision had just birthed a supernova, called rock & roll. The invention of a new culture, the American teenager, had been the nucleus of this supernova. These rebellious groups of teens needed a new sound to complement their rowdy, rough, bohemian lifestyle. The cry for a new sound obliged this perfect world of music to give rise to a new act. The bad boy of Mississippi, Elvis Presley, later crowned as the king of rock & roll piloted this act. A fantastic and charismatic performer, he produced the soundtrack of teenage experience. The construction of rock & roll was exceedingly supported by the youth and juvenile delinquents. The pioneers that steered this phenomenon further into overdrive were Buddy Holly with his influential creative force, Johnny Cash with his bass-baritone voice and

his “boom-chicka-boom” sound, and Jerry Lee Lewis with his great wilderness. The list goes on, but it’s time the early ladies of rock & roll get introduced. Janis Martin, nicknamed female Elvis, Wanda Jackson, and Brenda Lee kept the mix of sexes alive in the arena of rock & roll. However, this drive was very short-lived, February 3, 1959, officially regarded as “The day the music died” – refers to the death of three iconic rock & rollers, Buddy Holly, Ritchie Valens, and “The Big Popper” Richardson. Towards the end of the glorious 50s, a lot of other events earmarked the dip of rock & roll. Elvis joined the army, Little Richard quit music to preach God’s words, Chuck Berry got arrested for violating the Mann act, and Jerry Lee Lewis got entangled with harsh scandals. As the shimmering lights began to dim, the second wave of rock & roll began in the form of the British invasion.

Like its rivals, the A6 is mainly a standard sedan fitted up with a bolt-on electric drive-train. Between the 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol engine and the 40kW electric motor, is a thundering 242bhp and 480Nm of torque. When fully-charged, the battery has enough juice to see up to speeds of 100km/h on its own. Its makers claim that it would do 8L/100km. When the situation is right, the hybrid system will rise up to the occasion with a generous amount of “punch” to put you through aspirated acceleration. The electric drive-train on the other hand provides immediate propulsion with ease. Surprisingly, the 2.0-litre engine can toss out quite a bit of rumble when the pedal is floored.

The optional LED headlamps are unlike the ordinary HID - it emphasises a delightful ambience when viewed at night, courtesy of the glowing white hue. The choice of interior colours will drastically change the mood of the cabin. The dark-coloured interior gives rise to a solemn ambience, with textured aluminium trims adding an inherent feel to it. The hybrid is every bit as roomy as its direct competitors, but the far-reached dashboard, spontaneous layout, and top-notch material make it that much more desirable to have. There are no doubts that the A6 hybrid aces in terms of its fuel efficiency, but the Germans have also gone to show that hybrids aren’t always meant for

boring cynical bits of motoring that are meant solely for the earth lovers. It could very well be the way out for smart-car buyers who are looking to save on money without losing the premium grade and exclusivity of a luxury brand.

It was inevitable that Nokia would take a shot at the tablet market. The new Nokia Lumia 2520 is actually a pleasant surprise. Running on Windows, the 2520 is pretty much a larger version of the 6-inch Lumia 1520. The design is like no other, though it’s not as cold and sharp like the other tablets in the market. At a glance it’s inviting, almost welcoming you to start playing with it right away. At 1.36lbs, it’s slightly lighter than the Surface but a bit heavier than the new iPad Air. Holding it feels more comfortable and smaller than Microsoft’s Surface. Naturally, the next category to dissect is the display. It’s like any other 10-inch tablet but it does look great in the landscape orientation. The 1920x1080 pixels work wonderfully under Nokia’s ClearBlack technology, the same tech

used for their smartphones. It’s really bright and works very well outdoors without any issues. Although the pixel density is at 218PPI, you really won’t be fretting over the smaller details, as you would over other small tablets in the market. There are also front facing speakers under the display that sound quite decent, as there are no distortions when turned to full volume.Nokia decided to slap on a 2-megapixel front camera and a 6.7-megapixel camera on the back. However, it seems that the company wanted to make use of this tablet mostly in its landscape orientation, since the front camera is at the top when in landscape. They’ve even offered a power Keyboard cover for $150 (around Tk11,600). The biggest selling points for the 2520 are cellular connectivity and its huge

8,000mAh battery. A user is able to play games, browse the web, chat, and dabble with apps all day and still have plenty left over by the end. All of which performing under an incredibly fast Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 processor. It’s fast, bright, has a great battery life, and definitely worth a try. The prices will differ from place to place so look out for the new tablet in the market soon.

A full head of human hair (about 150,000 strands) is strong enough to support the weight of two full grown elephants

Truth be told

The hair dryerIt starts with a wash. If you’ve got limp hair, go with a volumising shampoo and conditioner, and for hair that’s frizz-prone, try a smoothing shampoo and conditioner to match. With conditioner, always apply from mid-length to ends, and never to the roots unless you want to go for the greasy look. Run a wide-toothed comb through your hair to work out the tangles and to work the conditioner into your hair. This also minimises hair breakage. Gently towel

dry, blot or dab, don’t rub. Apply a small amount of straightening serum, and you’re ready. Divide your hair into sections about two to four inches wide and hold taut with a hairbrush. Direct the airflow downwards with the nozzle pointed toward the end of your hair. Use the medium heat setting for two minutes with each section of hair and then repeat using the cold setting. The result is beautiful straight hair with a silky tint to boot.

The flat brushYou could wash, or you could just wet your hair with a spray bottle. If you’re washing, make sure you leave your conditioner in for two or three minutes. Gently towel-dry your hair till it is damp to touch, but not dripping wet. For best results, apply anti-frizz serum, about a dime-sized amount, distributed evenly through your hair. A straightening serum will work as well but avoid sprays or mousse. Then head to a warm, dry place, like on a roof, a veranda or a garden, if you’re lucky enough to have one. If it’s raining, find a warm place indoors. Then use a flat-brush to brush out your hair. Use long, even strokes that go from your roots to your tips. Brush until your

hair is completely dry. The amount of time you need depends on the thickness of your hair, but usually it takes around 30 minutes. Remember to pay equal attention to all your hair and don’t do this in parts. Most importantly, be patient.

You know when a girl walks past you, flauting perfect-looking , pin straight hair, and your hand unconsciously goes to your own? This happpens in conjunction with that sinking feeling that your hair won’t look like that unless you spend a lot of time killing it with a straightener. Well Avenue T is here to tell you how to get that look and have your hair stay healthy on the same token Rohini Alamgir

However, you might wonder why you’ll be burned alive, just for trying to make a living. There is no real answer to that question though. Perhaps your life is not as valuable as the politician’s, even though when it’s time to vote, they make you feel like the most important person that has ever lived. Let’s forget the intense hypocrisy for a second and focus on the fact that all this upheaval is in fact an attempt to find your support for a cause. A cause that you have nothing to do with. You’re just trying to live. Make some money, feed your family, and send your kids to school. That’s pretty much how our lives go. I don’t think for a second that we are concerned with ideological demands unless they infringe on democratic principles. Now you might think what democracy? Well you’re right, we’ve never really had our

right exercised unless it benefits as a political tool. Unless you’re useful, then my friend you’ll get a hefty amount just to walk in rallies, burn some buses, uproot some rail tracks, and create a general atmosphere of intense fear. As a rule of thumb, people don’t generally care, unless they’re caught in some mindless violence. Even then their experience is either trivialised or simply ignored. After all, who really cares about a poor farmer here or an office clerk there, who just happened to be at the wrong place at the wrong time?

Sadly, they are just casualties caught in the country’s so called demand for democracy. (Mind you, the country has no demand other than to just live). How sad are we to let this culture of violence perpetuate to such depths that we no longer feel shocked or afraid? So we go about our day, aware that our CNG might be tipped over and set in flames. Our need for survival forces us to risk getting caught in a bomb attack or two. Seemingly there is nothing to be done, even though in actuality a real democracy would be nice for a change.

Speak your mindMoving around Dhaka these days is a dream. There is no traffic and the roads are wide and empty. Never mind that you might get caught in a riot or your vehicle might have a cocktail bomb thrown at it. Most of the time though, travelling around is pretty safe Esha Aurora

You’ve had to deal with your own exes, but it’s a whole different game when her ex gets involved. Remember the research you were supposed to complete before you hopped into a new bag of problems? The information you neglect will come to bite your back side. This time around, your current significant other’s psycho ex-boyfriend makes a cameo. He’s not just your playschool version, he’s the type to permanently mark a girl’s name on his body. Remind you of a 90s Bollywood movie? We can go on for days about how these

ex-boyfriends have mother issues, but the sole purpose here is how to deal with them. The moment he finds out that his ex-girlfriend has a new main squeeze, the ridiculous threats will follow. In his head, he still thinks the two will end up together anyway. If he can’t have the girl, no one else can. The level of craziness is off the charts, so what do you do?

1. The no-name phone calls Your mobile phone will ring more often than not with an unknown number. It starts with the heavy breathing and

ends with shouting and foul language. The idea here is to keep your cool at all times. Think about it, what will you achieve by wasting your time and energy feeding into his non-stop nonsense? No replies, no attention, and no tension.

2. Extract the truth A tete-a-tete is in order with your significant other. Secrets are good for no one. Plain and simple, you both need to be open about your past relationships. You shouldn’t judge

anyone by their colourful past, but it’s good to understand facts that will prevent you from serious and damaging issues in the future.

3. Get out while you can It’s not about jumping ship at the first sight of a problem. You have to take a step back, think about the entire situation, and judge if it’s worth fighting for. If it’s really serious to the point where the psycho becomes dangerous, slapping a restraining order on the guy would be the best idea, for both of you.

Lay low like a proIn one of our previous issues we talked about the downsides of going overboard on keeping your relationship under wraps. Since we don’t talk about problems without offering solutions, this week, we’re going to discuss ways in which discreet dudes can have their privacy without hurting their ladies Sabrina Fatma Ahmad

Social not working No one really likes other people butting into their business, but some guys are fonder of their solitude than others. So when you’re starting out on a new romance, and it’s too early to think about the future, the last thing you want to do is have everyone in your network breathing down your neck. That you can wait before becoming “Facebook official” is a no-brainer; but keep your status “Single” too long, and you leave yourself wide open to any number of intrigues that can happen on the site, but that’s another story for another column. The simplest thing to do would be to quietly select the option to hide your relationship status. Out of sight, out of mind.

The art of introductions You don’t like labels, and maybe she’s okay with that. Sometimes, though, there are situations where you run into

someone familiar when you’re out with her, and introductions must be made for the sake of politeness. How do you avoid the label thing without leaving your woman out in the cold? Avoid mention of the nature of your relationship altogether. Just go with the name and occupation, and interject with something about it being nice to see them, and the moment for labels will pass.

All in the family If this is a relationship that’s lasted longer than a year, it’s natural for her (or even you) to want to include each other in family events. How do you do this without raising eyebrows or creating unnecessary pressure to commit? Invite each other over in a group, along with other friends. We won’t lie - it will be a little awkward at first, but soon enough, once you’re familiar enough with the home crew, no one will bat an eyelid when you hang out together.

The key here is to work together to create the impression that whatever you are to one another, it’s no one else’s business. If you present a united

Autumn upgrade

Articles by Mahmood Hossain

This winter’s king of jeans will be of the black variety. It’s the sharpest contrast you will find for the season. Black jeans is a double threat for your style arsenal. On one front, you have the standout statement. Avoiding the all blue wash will set you apart from the rest. Even though we all love our regular blue lot, the black will have to have reservations to exclusive seats. On the other front, you can dress up or dress down your black jeans. You’ve got your casual cool outfit. You can combine it with a black leather jacket, white t-shirt, and round things up with some Chelsea boots. Something so simple makes the best impression. If you’ve got the right quality denim, you can make the same impression with a touch of sophistication

by dressing things up. Substitute the old navy blazer/suit jacket with navy jeans for the black. A casual black blazer has a better effect with the darkest denim. Add on a charcoal grey or white dress shirt and some classy lace-ups to complete the outfit. Remember, different brands have different washes and design differences. One pair maybe darker than the other, and another may look closer to a worn out, dark grey shade. Limiting yourself to just one black pair is an injustice. Having a choice from a couple of jeans will sharpen any ensemble. Spending a little extra when you can won’t hurt anyone, so make like the late Amy Winehouse and go back to black.

Take out the blackwashed denim for an edgy cool look

Q: I have plenty of winter clothes, but I have noticed sweater vests in a couple of stores I like to shop at. Are those still fashionable?A: You won’t see too many reaching out for sweater vests, but it shouldn’t be looked down upon. If you do things right, it will have that “geek chic” effect. If you are thinking about wearing one, there should be certain things to keep in mind. First, make sure the sweater vest is not chunky or saggy. You always have to make sure it fits (just like everything else). It better hug your body like a Teflon shield. Second, always stick with solid coloured designs. Apart from stripes and argyle, there shouldn’t be any other patterns on the vest. For those of you who are bold, go ahead and have fun but don’t overdo the geekness.

Q: I was wondering if it was ever appropriate to wear sneakers with suits. I’ve seen celebrities on the red carpet and other events pull this look off. I’m thinking of wearing the look to a wedding in the near future.A: Celebrities? If Usher called you up one day and asked you to jump off a cliff, would you? There is a time and place for certain outfits but there are certain rules you simply do not break. It’s someone’s wedding, not a music awards show. In other words, you have to show some respect. Unless the dress code on the invitation specifically says semi-casual, you have no business putting on sneakers with your well fitted suit. It doesn’t matter if it’s a Balenciaga, Gucci, or any other high-end label pair of sneakers. But if you like the look so much, and you believe you can pull it off, there are plenty of events you can rock that to. Just leave the weddings alone.

Style tip: Regardless the colour, you always want to keep a balance from top to bottom. Never walk out with the same coloured top and bottom, unless it’s a suit

Style Session

This one is for the gentleman who is health and body conscious. And with winter soon to grab hold of us, hitting that gym and keeping that body warm isn’t a bad idea. Just like any other event, there are dos and don’ts on what to wear during your workouts at the gym.

TopsThe easiest choice here is a simple t-shirt. The obvious would be to choose tops from athletic brands like Nike and Adidas. But make sure the t-shirts you choose are made out of light and breathable material. Cotton is a yes, polyester is a huge no. As usual, make sure it fits; it can’t be loose, and it can’t be too tight where your nipples are showing like George Clooney in Batman & Robin. And always remember to wear darker coloured tops. You should avoid those visible sweat stains and dirt.

BottomsShorts, of course. What else would you choose? A cotton or mesh gym shorts work perfectly fine. Although, wearing sweatpants aren’t a bad idea either. Nowadays, brands are making sure everything is fashion forward so sweatpants won’t look too baggy on you.

And for the love of all that is holy, please stay away from spandex.

Shoes and socksWhere socks are concerned, it won’t be too much of a problem. You can choose from your knee-high to ankle-high sports socks. Yes, gentlemen, this is the only place where it’s okay to be wearing white socks. As for the shoes, it all depends on what you are aiming to do. Shooting some hoops on the court, obviously, requires proper basketball shoes. Track shoes for running, cross-trainers for every other workout and so on.

Main accessoriesCheck these off one by one, what type of item you should buy will be discussed on another day:

1. Gym bag2. Extra towel3. Water bottle4. Body spray or deodorant5. Armbands or wristbands to

wipe the sweat off when you can’t reach for the towel

Q&A

sensitive issuesThere are tons of lotions and potions dedicated to oily, dry, and mature skin. What’s a girl with sensitive skin to do? Sabah Rahman

While many brands in the West have products that target this issue, almost every company on this side of the world seems to have jumped on the whitening wagon. There are many factors that can trigger off your skin, causing sensitivity - the sun, food, stress, and even that time of the month. Make an appointment with a dermatologist to rule out skin conditions such as Eczema or Rosacea, as they will be able to prescribe you with a treatment. Here are a few tips for those plagued with red, itchy, and dry skin.

Pay attentionOur systems change over the years and sometimes, we develop allergies to certain things we were able to tolerate before. Pay close attention to what you have been eating or elements you have been exposed to the next time you have an allergic reaction. Spicy foods and shellfish can aggravate sensitivity on an already irritated skin. If you get reactions around specific areas like your mouth or eyes, the lipstick or eye cream you use

may not be suitable for your skin. Look for replacements that work for you.

Test productsAlways try new products before shelling out your hard earned cash. Rub a tiny bit on your jawline and give it some time. If there is no swelling, redness or irritation after a few hours, you’re good to go.

Go naturalGo for delicious smelling body lotion that reminds you of freshly baked cookies, or your purple tinged lavender body wash. Sounds tempting, but bear in mind that most highly perfumed products usually contain dyes that sensitive skin will not be able to handle. Use shea or cocoa butter based washes and lotions whenever possible to hydrate your skin and soothe any irritation.

Rose waterRose water has been proven to decrease redness and calm the skin. Many companies abroad use elements of

rose in their sensitive skin lines. Dabur, an Indian brand, which has products widely available in Dhaka, has a rose water spray which is very popular among sensitive skinned ladies. Store the bottle in the fridge and spray generously onto the face anytime it feels dry or itchy. The cooling effect of the spray reduces redness and inflammation.

1 Keep the fit of the blazer in mind. If the store does not have a return/exchange policy, try it on. If the button does not close without pulling, it is not the right size for you. Take a good look at the front and back, if the back bunches up, you may have to go up a size. The perfect blazer should button up without trouble and once buttoned should graze your body. You shouldn’t see any pulling at the waist or the back.

2 Take a good look at your body. A blazer that works for one person may not work for another. If you are top heavy, opt for a blazer in a dark colour. If you have a bit of extra weight around your mid section, pick a blazer that cinches at the waist and flares outwards creating an hourglass shape.

Blazers 101Now that it’s chillier out, there is nothing more necessary for a fashionista’s wardrobe than a couple of nice blazers - a great blazer that elevates a drab pair of old jeans into something chic and styling. Here are some tips on finding the perfect blazer to accent your winter get-up no matter what look you want to go for Maya Almuqtadir

3 Spend your money wisely. Trends don’t last forever and just because that Tk4,000 neon pink blazer may be hot right now, chances are it will fizzle out. Unless money is in abundance, spend your cash on a well-tailored, black blazer that will last forever.

4 If your friend owns a beautiful blazer that looks great on you, borrow it for a few days and have something tailored. We in Bangladesh are lucky to have tailors around every corner, who do great work.

Instead of always pairing blazers with pants, try layering it over a simple tank dress for a fresh new look

Q. Where can I get a stylish jacket or coat this winter?A. We may not be spoilt for choice when it comes to winter wear in Dhaka, but there are a few fun options we can pick and choose from. Urban Truth usually carries knit blazers in basic colours when temperatures drop. Stores like Artisti and Cats Eye also have jackets in stock. You could always visit the market opposite to Dhaka College for a wide variety of sweaters, thick trench and pea coats, and trendy jackets. You could also choose to stand out among the masses this winter and get a one of a kind piece made. Buy some thick fabric, such as corduroy, gabardine or denim, paired with thinner fabric to use as lining. Remember to buy some buttons too, Chandi Chawk Market has an amazing variety. Make your way to your favourite tailor with a picture of the kind of coat you have in mind, and a few days later, you’ll have an original.

How many of us are actually using the right products for the look we want to achieve? Did you know, using too much of any miracle in a bottle gives us unpleasant results, leaving us with a greasy mess on our heads? However, fret no more-your days of confusion are finally over. Avenue T breaks down the leading products in the market and walks you through their proper usage.

Heat protectantsOur hair needs a layer of protection before we blast it with blow dryers. These products usually come in spray form and are meant to be misted onto damp hair, prior to blow-drying. There are also different formulae that should be used on dry hair before heat styling. Heat protectants can be a life-saver for women who use hot tools on a regular basis as they shield the hair from further damage, dullness, and dryness. Regular

use will also help you achieve healthier strands. Keep an eye out for versions that possess a UV filter and colour protection.

Volumising productsWhether you purchase a mousse or a spray, thickening products are heaven for those with naturally fine hair. Work a coin size amount of the product into the roots while hair is slightly damp.

Most women have an army of hair products on their bathroom shelves and cabinets. Some even have more than they know what to do with and tend to just stare blankly at the colourful bottles and jars, scratching their heads, wondering where to even start Sabah Rahman

Immediately blow-dry in sections with a large round brush. If not, the product will dry naturally on the hair if left on too long, producing sticky roots, which is the exact opposite of what you want.

Frizz fightersEverybody has bad hair days, but some of us tend to find ourselves having a daily battle with the monster called frizz. Here is where anti-frizz serums come to save the day. Every woman with unruly curls needs to own one of these formulae. There are new versions available as creams and are easier to work with, as they are lighter than serums. Remember to use a pea-sized amount, steering away from roots to avoid weighing hair down.

Dry shampooA summer favourite, dry shampoos are essentially a powder in spray form. Greasy hair can be salvaged by spritzing this product underneath bangs and roots lightly, followed by a good brushing. Remember to hold the can 12 inches away from your head to ensure even distribution. There are also colour specific formulae available to avoid any white residue. If you’re not a fan of washing your hair daily, use a dry shampoo in between washes to keep your crowning glory fresh and styled.

Curling creamThis one is for the curly haired ladies out there. Curling creams are to be used on damp hair to help moisturise, define, and shape curls. Keep the thickness of your mane in mind, to determine how much of the product you will need. Rub the cream between the palms of your hand before applying to hair. Follow with a blow dryer with a diffuser or let it air-dry. There are a few types that can be used on dry curls as well, as a styling agent.

straightening creamFor girls who have slight waves and prefer not to use a straightening iron, straightening creams smooth down the hair shaft, resulting in shiny, straight hair. Use a pea-sized amount on damp hair and dry with a paddle brush.

Texturising productsFrom pomades and waxes, to powders and sprays, these products are ideal for choppy layers and short hairstyles. While pomades and waxes work best for messy or spiky tips, sprays and powders can add some much needed oomph to fine, layered hair. Always use a light hand during application. It’s easy to build up to the amount of product you want in your hair, as opposed to having to wash it and start over from scratch.

Use a clarifying shampoo once a week to rid your hair and scalp of product build-up and residue

How would you like to eat fine Italian cuisine with fine cutlery, but in a car? Club Wheels is a themed restaurant like no other. Established by the owners of the automobile importing and sales company “Wheels,” this restaurant is crafted to impress thoroughly Fahad R Khan

You enter and the first thing you see are car parts, car parts everywhere. Walk in a little bit more and there’s a car. An entire car is inside the restaurant. Outfitted with seats and a table, the car can seat four people and has working doors and all. On the other side, there’s another half of a car, which is a design aspect. The tables have real car engines under them, the smoking zone has piston ashtrays, and the walls have springs, brakes, and other parts serving as decor. There are three floors and each of them specialise in specific things. The ground floor has a cafe and a fast food restaurant, which also serves as a general hangout spot. The second floor is for fine dining and the third floor is a party centre that seats about 60 people. The menu features food from every corner of the world and a very capable kitchen crew. The kitchen is headed by

two chefs who hail from the kitchens of Radisson and American Club. And if you have ever been to the aforementioned venues, you can attest to their quality. Food ranges from tacos and fajitas to rib-eyes and tenderloins. Mexican food starts at Tk330 for a Quesadilla, to Tk600 for a Beef Minute Steak with sauteed mushrooms. CinnamonCinnamon is rich in natural compounds called polyphenols. This compound acts like insulin in our body to help regulate blood sugar levels. It is also known to aid in fat burning. A consistent intake of cinnamon daily can help reduce glucose, triglyceride, and LDL cholesterol, for people with type-2 diabetes. It also provides manganese, iron, and calcium.

ClovesIt was found to have the highest antioxidant content among all spices. It can be used as a painkiller and has been

used for centuries to treat tooth aches and gum pain. It also eases cold and allergies. Oil of clove is used as natural antiseptic in mouthwash.

TurmericThe bright neon yellow colour of turmeric comes from the phytochemical “cur cumin” which can eliminate cancer cells, help reduce obesity and metabolic diseases. It also reduces inflammations and improves joints.

GingerOver 50 antioxidants have been found in ginger. It helps increase blood circulation and calms digestive problems. Ginger is also used to treat food poisoning and arthritis. It reduces inflammation, lowers cholesterol, and can be used to help increase insulin sensitivity in diabetics. It can decrease motion sickness, nausea, and can ease a sore throat, when mixed with tea.

RosemaryRosemary has the ability to fight ageing

by rejuvenating small blood vessels under the skin. It blocks carcinogens found in grilled meat. Moreover, rosemary oil improves cognitive performance and fights off free radical’s which can cause Alzheimer’s, stroke, and dementia.

mustardMustard is used in cooking because of its intense taste and smell. The compound Allyl isothiocyanate (AITC), an organosulphur found in mustard is an anti-cancer compound and studies have shown that it has stopped the growth of bladder cancer by 33%.

oreganoOregano is an antiviral, antibacterial, anti-cancer and an antibiotic. It is extremely high in antioxidants. Serving as an excellent counterpose for the chaturanga dandasana, this is one yoga pose that you should try to incorporate into your yoga routine.DirectionsSit in the staff pose, placing your hands behind your hips, with your fingers pointing towards the front. Allow your knees to bend and then place your feet on the floor and raise your heels. Your heels should be a good feet away from your buttocks. Exhale as you press your feet and hands down on the floor, lifting your hips till your body forms a reverse tabletop pose.Breathe deeply while following this step until your torso and thighs are parallel

Aiming at not losing the height your hips have reached, straighten out your legs one at a time. Try to lift your hips higher, however, be careful not to harden your buttocks while doing so. Your shoulder blades should be pressed against your back, this will give you the support you require to lift your chest upwards. While breathing, slowly tilt your head backwards, hold this pose for 30 seconds and while exhaling, sit back down in dandasana.

17Tucked In

Decorating a room for your daughter doesn’t have to be the most expensive thing in the world. You just need to be creative, know what your daughter might prefer, modify or buy a few pieces of furniture and play with a few themes and colours. By colour however, it does not necessarily mean the wall paint, it includes accessories on the walls, bed sheets etc. Don’t go overboard though, you don’t want your daughter’s room to look like an art museum. Make it comfortable and decorate it with accessories which go with her age. It is important that you don’t accessorise her room too much though. Since too many accessories could pose risks to her safety and well being. On the other hand you can decorate the room with cute photo frames, jewellery boxes, stuffed toys etc.Let’s face it, studying can be dreadfully boring at times for children. Kids love to get attention and do things that make them feel important. Add an interesting twist to your daughter’s study table. Give

it a mini-office look, keeping in mind to not make it boring. Storage is a very important factor and you cannot ignore that in your child’s room. Have enough storage space for your daughter to keep all her essential things

in. However, refrain from implementing a complicated storage system, which might lead to confusion. Curtains are an essential part of a room’s decor thus refrain from using dull drapes for her room. Avoid using a single type

of fabric, rather hang several types in a colour your daughter prefers.

Add a little drama to the decor of your home to make things really interesting!

Moving into a new home (Part II)Now that you have moved into your new house, it is time to settle in. Your little princess needs her own room. And then there are budget constraints Tausif Sanzum

Turtle careTurtles are expensive and time consuming , and while they’re not cuddly, turtles are definitely cute, and they make the coolest superheroes Rohini Alamgir

Decor

Getting it rightBefore you start, know your breed. For many animals, a general care guide will suffice, but turtles are temperamental creatures, so they need a lot of specific care.

A place of their ownTurtles need space. To start, you need a tank with a 150-litre capacity. But remember, while they like their time in water, they’re amphibians, and need an equal amount of time on land. Therefore make sure you divide the tank into land and water areas. A lot of people use styrofoam to build up the land part, but that’s not necessarily a good idea. The best option is to use colourful pebbles, especially since turtles love pebbles. Turtles also need UV rays, so make sure your tank is in a well light spot for the day time, and for the night or overcast days, set up a lamp next to the tank. Stay environmentally friendly, and go with the energy saving bulbs.

Care factorsTurtles have delicate immune systems, so it is very important to monitor their tank and water temperatures regularly. The exact temperatures depend on your turtle’s breed. On that note, try not to take your turtle in and out of their tank frequently, because that might just get them sick. Change the water daily, but clean the tank and change your turtle’s bedding around once a month.Turtles are hibernating animals and need to hibernate for at least 10-20 weeks, usually just before winter hits. For that time of the year, you’ll need to create a hideout for your turtle, a cave-like structure that it can crawl into and nap undisturbed. During this time, make sure your turtle isn’t moved or disturbed in any way, because that can be emotionally stressful for them.

Food for thoughtBaby turtles need to eat every day, but with adult turtles, you can get by with

three times a week. Turtles are mostly vegetarians, so they usually eat all kinds of fruit and vegetables. Turtles like bite-sized portions, so make sure you chop or shave your turtle’s food and mix it well, otherwise it might just turn its nose up and starve. Make sure you mix in good sources of proteins and vitamins, because turtles are picky and do not eat a whole range of foods from which it could otherwise have easily received these nutrients.

What to do

Dublin, IrelandHome to many famous literary giants like James Joyce, Samuel Beckett, W B Yeats, and Oscar Wilde; Ireland is lovingly called “The emerald isle” for its lush green landscape. The country is divided between Northern Ireland and The Republic of Ireland. The birthplace of Saint Patrick’s Day and the myth of the leprechaun, Ireland offers an amazing cultural experience and picture perfect settings of emerald green landscapes and towering castles. In the centre of all this poetic beauty lies its capital Dublin. Dubliners are famous for their rebellious nature.
