Each colour translates to the national French mottos of liberty, equality and fraternity. Krzysztof Kieslowski weaves interwoven tales of each protagonist by making us critically question each theme, is it really liberty or anti liberty? There is an element of the opposite forces working in each story. All three movies are visual art, dominated by their respective colours.

Blue stars Juliette Binoche as Julie, a sole survivor of a car accident where she loses her renowned music composer husband, and child. As the story progresses we begin to see how tragedy engulfs her entirely, as she refuses to go back to her old life. Themes of liberty and anti-liberty plague the rest of the movie, where one is left wondering over and over again “will she or won’t she?”

Without giving away too much of the story, the movie essentially unravels Julie’s past life, first by finding her ex-boyfriend, then her husband’s pregnant lover and finally it hints at Julie being the real author of her late husband’s music. All the while we see it through a blue filter, most prominent in the beads of a chandelier.

Movies like these are food for the soul. It makes you think, critically about the world around you, about the people around you, the stories they have to tell, and the perspective you take while hearing it. Tragedy is sometimes insurmountable, and when faced alone, one can be swallowed by it, thus the theme of anti-liberty or be freed by it.

BlueWritten and directed by Krzysztof Kieslowski, the three colour trilogy is a critically acclaimed series of movies. The three colours represent the colours of French flag: red, white and blue Esha Aurora

Catch the third season of this thrilling drama that has viewers captivated. Claire Danes returns as Carrie Mathison, the CIA officer who helped Nicholas Brody escape after he was presumed dead. The cliffhanger Season 2 finale left viewers spinning and eager to see where the next episodes will take the storyline. “Homeland” is set to air on Star World on September 29.

This is a movie about six friends who find themselves trapped inside a building when the world outside seems to be falling apart. Tension mounts as their friendships are put to the test. Fans of “Pineapple Express” will be delighted to find that this movie features some of the same cast.

‘This Is How You Lose Her,’ the new book by Pulitzer Prize winning author of the ‘Brief and Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao,’ this book is about the various ways the protagonist cheats on his girlfriends and loses them. It is often times funny, sad, and heartbreaking at the same time.

5Tech & Turns

There are several song recognition apps out there, but this one just might top the cake. Over 20 million users around the world from Google Play Store alone have been enjoying this app’s extensive catalogue of synchronised lyrics. It’s like having your own karaoke machine on the go, and it allows users to fully enjoy music by learning and relating to songs through their lyrics. Sure, there are plenty of nonsensical songs, but that shouldn’t stop you from singing along. This app goes to work right away. Once you’ve downloaded and installed it, musiXmatch goes through your phone’s music library and instantly tags the lyrics to them. And if you ever think a song has the wrong lyrics, you can flag it to help them rectify it. That’s not all, it also comes with the basic song recognition feature. With Music ID, you are able to identify songs when they’re played from TV, Radio, or YouTube. All that can be done with a single touch. As mentioned, with this app you get your own portable karaoke with a beautiful user interface that plays each song in landscape view for a better read.

The latest update provides users with the following:l NEW: Equaliser and cover art fixingl NEW: Remove ads optionl Fix your music tag/ meta datal Get instant lyrics notifications from other music playersl Search for lyrics by typing words, artiste name, or song title

MusicXmatch is free to download and is available on Android, iOS, and Windows Phone.

It is slightly larger than its predecessor, but it’s thinner and lighter. At 8.3mm and weighing at only 168g, it’s easier to handle. Well, at least in the weight department. You still will need to use both hands in order to operate, but it’s a “phablet” after all. The screen itself is brighter, colourful, and very responsive, all aspects you should expect from the recent crop of large smartphones. In the belly of the beast resides a 2.3GHz processor and an impressive 3GB of RAM. Now, imagine the multitasking abilities on the Note 3. And no need to worry on the longevity front. The 3,200mAh battery, a strong suit in Galaxy phones, will make sure there is plenty of huffing and puffing left for this big bad wolf. There’s also a 13-megapixel rear camera that is placed

on what seems to be a leather stitched back. Yes, you read that right. However, don’t get your hopes up, people. It’s more of a leather effect with mock stitching. Regardless, it’s a nice change from the usual designs we’ve been seeing from Samsung. It is obvious Samsung is trying to portray a more expensive and sophisticated look for the Note 3, while staying practical. With a slightly larger screen and powerful performance, this becomes the perfect partner for the office. It’s the device that isn’t quite the tablet but gets the necessary multitasking out of the way and things in order, both in your personal and professional lives. Look out for the new Galaxy Note 3, which will be available in the market soon.

Especially designed for the Japanese domestic market; it is available with only one engine variation in our country. Powered by a 1.5litre engine, which produces 110Hp coupled up with a Super CVT-i (Super Continuously Variable Transmission-intelligent) transmission that provides exceptional cruising performance. The Corolla Axio has adopted a light weight and highly rigid body which as a result made the passenger compartment a lot quieter and also gave it a more aerodynamic feel. Inside the cabin, the backseat floor hump has been minimised to create flat-surfaced legroom, which according

to Toyota is very comfortable for sitting three fully grown adults. Meanwhile the driver gets a steering wheel with a telescopic function that allows its position to be adjusted, front to rear. The wheel is complemented by a comfortable seat for a pleasant driving experience. The key components of the

front and rear suspensions have also been optimally tuned to provide speedy manoeuvring and cruising stability, as well as a comfortable ride. The Axio has a fuel efficiency of 12km/l and yet manages to do 0-100km/h in less than 11 seconds. The Axio not only looks good but it drives well, and to sum it up, it has a pretty adequate performance as well. No wonder people all over the world seem to like it. But if the buyers do venture over to the local Nissan or Honda dealers for a few test-drives, they are most likely to realise that the Corolla is far from the class leader it once was. By any stretch of the imagination, it’s not a bad car but over time its rivals have gone better, while Toyota stood there doing nothing.

1) Make a mental note of things she mentions: If she is home and craving a whopper burger, you showing up at the doorstep with a huge burger would definitely lighten up her mood. Try and keep count of a few of the goodies she may mention, and give it to her. It’s the small gestures that count.

2) Make her feel beautiful: Women love feeling that they are the most beautiful in their partners’ eyes. But sometimes diverting compliments from their looks to their talents would make them feel just as good. If she is a good swimmer, tell her that. If she is a good poet, take time, read some of her work and give her feedback about it. Remember, she’s more than just a pretty face.

3) Trust her: She isn’t going to catch the next bus and walk to the next cutie who smiles at her, so just relax. When she’s out at night, instead of asking her who she is with and what’s taking her forever, ask her if she’s had dinner and if she needs a massage. Instead of stepping on her space, let your woman have some peace of mind.

4) Respect her choices: You both may not see eye to eye about everything, hence, refrain from imposing your ideas on hers. If she wants to step out of the country and pursue a risky fashion career, let her go for it. Walk her through her passions; she’ll love you for that. If she fails and falls, then don’t give her the i-told-you-so look, hold her hand and guide her through her next passion (even if it fails.)

Ex-communications

Whoever told you that it’s possible to be friends with your ex is dead wrong. Well, maybe not completely, but 99.7% wrong. An exaggeration? Not at allMahmood Hossain

The fact that you’ve given the effort to remain friends with your ex is only proof that you’re deluding yourself. There is history there, sure. You’ve been through a lot together, but that ex of yours, like so many before her, is going to be a pain in the backside. She will, subconsciously, no, knowingly ruin any real chance you may have with a new girl. The ideal step to take is to keep the distance without offending anyone. The obvious thing to do is cut the cord completely. Delete all contact you have with her from the get-go. All the confusion and old feelings should

be put to rest from the beginning of the end. No reason to be sentimental here, your ex is called your ex for a reason. Now, if your family happens to be friends with her family, well, that’s a story for a different day. You should also know, this doesn’t just blow over in one night. It’s a process, just like everything else.Remember, it takes two to tango. You actually have to give the proper effort of paying attention to the new girl, which means there are things you should never do around her, such as mentioning your ex. NEVER mention your ex! The new girl doesn’t care,

and frankly, she doesn’t want to be compared with the past. It’s in poor taste, and a gentleman knows better.

You want her to feel comfortable and safe, knowing there might be a bright future for the both of you.

Out with the old and in with the new. Keep running that through your head, and give yourself and the new relationship a chance.

v 2 nail polishes in separate shades (one light and one dark)v 1 topcoatv 1 small square of cellophane paper*v 1 sponge*v 1 toothpick

*You may cut out squares from any reusable plastic bag**A make-up sponge will suffice

Directions

1) Paint your entire nails using the lighter shade of nail polish. Wait five minutes for the polish to dry.2) On a cellophane paper, place one drop of the lighter shade. To its left, place one drop of the darker shade. Both these polishes should be placed in a manner that leaves no clear space between the two.3) Using a toothpick, gently make 1mm circles in the meeting point between the two polishes, being careful not to completely mix the two.4) Use a tiny square of sponge and dab the edge on top of the meshed polish on the cellophane paper.5) Lightly dab the sponge directly on your nails, making sure that the lighter shaded side of the sponge is near your cuticles. Keep dabbing until you have a light shaded effect.6) Wait three minutes for your nails to dry.7) Apply top coat to smoothen out the polish. Wait two minutes for the polish to dry.

Ombre nailsAt first, there were the classic nudes and gentle beiges quietly sitting on every finger. Soon, this trend of subdued shades transcended into darker counterparts that paraded in strong shades of auburn and coffee. Before they could go any further in the race of classic tints, bold reds, and solid maroons made their presence felt with striking statement hues. When the world was tired of dreary, solid shaded nails, then came the ombre nails: the gentle yet audacious mesh of shades that step into the world of multiple colours, opening up several creative doors for nail art fanatics. Simple, easy to do and enormously stylish, it’s time you tried out this trend and let your nails speak your mood Natasha Rahman

There is no doubt that people who control the internet also control our lives. So, when one day they suddenly decide to run hour long maintenance, we spiral into a vortex of boredom. Well, it doesn’t have to be that way. There are a few things you can do other than refresh your browser a thousand times a minute. Read a book: I mean seriously, pick up a real-life paperback and dig in. There is nothing better than curling up with a good book and getting lost in it. Also, reading books provides more educational value than seeing what your friends post online 24/7. If you can’t find a good book, grab a few magazines and read those. Read anything! It actually expands your brain, that’s a fact.

Clean your room/house: When was the last time you organised your space? I have days when I turn my room upside down looking for things. Months go by and things just keep building up. Take the free time bestowed upon you to reorganise. Trust me, it will be the best thing you do, and you might just get lucky finding money in your pants or bags.

Draw something: Remember the manual world of drawing on a piece of paper and not on your tablet or phone? Why not return to that world? The actual feel of holding pencil against paper will take you back to a simpler time. Get lost drawing crazy or, if you have real talent, beautiful things. Good luck, and have some fun getting to know the physical world again, even if it is just for an hour.

Life without internet

These days, it’s impossible to imagine life without the internet. We constantly go between tweets, status updates, sepia filtered photos of food on Instagram, messages on WhatsApp and the general nuisances of ‘LOL Cats.’

Miss Bibi is unhappy today. Staring down from her window, she can see her daughter’s friend, “little miss too fast for her age,” holding hands with a boy. Miss Bibi is at her wit’s end! What if this chit of a girl influences her daughter? Will she run away with Ronny from down the street? Will she? Miss Bibi’s mind begins to fill with horror and fear.

Rants

“Girls these days! My God! Do they not have respect for their elders? Sauntering down the street wearing clothes like that. So tight, they must have been sewn onto her. Shame, shame! In my day, my mother would have disowned me. Now, my own daughter demands I buy her western clothes once a month. Such disobedience from my own child is unimaginable. Wait till ‘The Mister’ comes home. I am full of complaints, he says. But he doesn’t understand how hard it is to raise a daughter these days.

My daughter wants too many things. More freedom, more designer clothes, more foreign vacations. How am I to protect her if she is away by herself most of the time? I don’t know all her friends

parents. Who do I call when she is ten minutes late past curfew? She says she is 25 and should be allowed to leave the house without a guardian, but she knows nothing. She just wants to run away with Ronny from down the street. I know it! It’s a mother’s instinct.

I don’t understand why my daughter insists on wearing what she wears. I don’t understand why ‘The Mister’ thinks I overreact all the time. I don’t think they understand me at all. All I want is for my daughter to look respectable. Wearing jeans and a loose shirt is not respectable. Even if she insists she is old enough to make that decision, she isn’t.

Children don’t have a say in our culture, that’s how it’s always been. Suddenly, with her fancy foreign education she throws around words like ‘legal age’ and ‘free will.’ Girls are meant to be kept inside and controlled, and I don’t understand how she doesn’t know that or why ‘The Mister’ encourages her.

“Girls these days!”

Cutting hair is an art. It takes serious skill and talent to produce the right hairdo. Alongside this talent, barbers are skilled in shaving, facials, manicures and pedicures. They can do it all, so it’s wise to find the one that suits you, someone who understands you and your sense of style.

Here’s how to build a solid repertoire with your barber:

l Do the homework. Ask around and see if your friends recommend someone in particular. Once that is settled, ask for something simple,

like a short trim. Test the barber’s skills, and see if you walk out satisfied.

l Don’t be fooled by the environment. Expensive layouts and tools don’t necessarily mean a Tk500 haircut is better than a Tk100 haircut. You can look like you had a Tk200 haircut from a barber in Old Dhaka who only charges Tk80.

l The best barber not only has the ability to cut hair, but also has enough experience to provide the style you want.

l Talk to him and come to an agreement. You may want a certain hairdo that the barber does not agree with. Take his opinion, it actually matters, but also be firm about your own desires. As you talk to each other, you’ll eventually meet halfway and find yourself the perfect hairdo.

Tip your barber. The man deserves not only recognition, but also appreciation. Let him know that you value his business, which means a Tk200 haircut is actually a Tk300 haircut

Top of the head The art of negotiation goes beyond court rooms and business transactions, all the way down to haggling with your local grocer and barber. Having a personal barber is as important as having a personal tailor. Grooming comes first, outfits come second. If you don’t already have your own barber, there is a certain procedure to follow when it comes to finding one

There are several ways you can add a modern twist to this traditional event. For one take the usual color scheme of red and white and substitute them with seasonal trends like jewel toned rich deep colors such as teal, purple, deep reds, and forest greens. Wear short panjabi’s with dhuti style pants, or if you’re feeling

adventurous wear a real dhuti! For a slightly formal look, wear a sherwani. You can also take the uber tradition route and wear a white dhuti with a red panjabi or shawl. The modern twist can be added by using nontraditional fabrics for these garments. Basically you can keep the look but update it with silks, and cottons and khadhi cotton.

Accessorise with kolapuri style sandals or for a modern twist wear leather flip flops. Please do not wear socks and trekking sandals. In fact socks should never be worn with open toe sandals, ever. Now that you’re in on the some new ways to update an old look, go out there and shop till you drop. Just remember to keep it stylish.

Puja style guide

Q: Now that summer is over, can I no longer wear my colourful clothes and accessories?

A: Of course not! As we transition into autumn, there’s a mixology in place. It’s encouraged to keep a few items from your summer wardrobe going into the autumn months. The steps are quite simple. If you have a loud and colourful T-shirt, it can easily be muted down with darker tones. Think dark wash denim with a navy blazer, or a cobalt blue jacket with charcoal grey trousers and black shoes. The contrast needs to be darker in majority. The idea is to always have a colour that pops up in front of a darker background. A black double-breasted suit jacket, black shirt, black jeans, and black boots, and then, all of a sudden, there is a shock of blue or pink from the pocket square.

Q: Recently, I’ve seen a lot of hip-hop artistes at fashion shows. Is their style the new trend for menswear, are baggy pants back in?

A: Not really sure where you saw baggy pants on recent runways, but yes, you’ll see plenty of rappers and singers alike at fashion shows. It’s nothing new. You must remember, hip-hop is a culture that has gone side by side with fashion since the 80s. From the Adidas kitted out RUN DMC, to today’s pop stars and rapping kings rocking Tom Ford, celebrities will never disappear from the fashion scene. Not only do they indirectly support and endorse the popular labels, but they also provide a healthy showing that two industries can coexist and help one another. As for your baggy pants question, fashion doesn’t change for celebrities and the public; it’s the other way around. No, baggy pants are not in, unless you feel comfortable wearing those harem pants in a casual manner.

Puja is a just around the corner. It is time to get dresses and join all the festivities. Since its fall, the weather dictates a lot of what our attire is going to be

Long locksHair

Is there a more carefree and classic hairstyle than long , straight hair? Hair worn straight down is such a fresh and young look, especially when it’s with a middle part! Su Jorgensen

Trends

For healthy, long and straight hair, start with the right hair products to keep your hair happy and shiny. Look for a sulphate-free shampoo and conditioner that won’t dry your hair. Air-dry your hair as much as possible, and avoid the damaging heat of blow dryers and styling tools, like hair straighteners. If you’re busy, try giving your hair a break over the weekend. Go to a reputable salon or spa and get an aromatherapy hot oil head massage to strengthen your weak hair and help make it healthierThere are many ways to wear this gorgeous hairstyle. The key is to have healthy hair, rich colours (ombre is still in, but a more subtle version, reverse ombre, is more in style right now,) proper

partings, half fringes (if you can handle it in the heat,) choppy, textured base lengths, long layers, and front layers that frame your face. If you want more of a sexy, tousled look, which is very in right now, use a sea salt spray for a beachy, carefree, “just got out of bed” look, or, especially if you’ve just washed it, add some dry shampoo to the roots to make it look relaxed and natural.

Remember that you don’t have to over do it; there’s nothing wrong with a simple, classical, long-haired look as long as your hair is healthy and has some colour in it.

Perfect hair and make-up for Durga Puja

Flawless and fabulous

Day Look It’s hot out there and the fact that braids are trendy at the moment is a blessing. Sweep your hair to one side and go for a messy fishtail braid. Don’t forget to add a flower or two for a touch of festive cheer. Smokey eyes seem to be the traditional way to go. Opt for a lighter shade of bronze shadow with kohl liner during the day. Colour your pout with a nude gloss. Use a fine dusting of the right shade of loose powder to avoid meltdown. There is an innumerable variety of bindis you can choose from with such as glass beads, semiprecious stones and even metallic thread. Pick one that appeals the most to you and you’re set.

Evening LookEvenings are thankfully cooler so curl your tresses and leave them loose. You can part your hair on the side and secure it with a pinned flower.Go as wild as you dare with your make-up. Smudge some kohl on your eyes for a smokey look and slick on some bright red lipstick. A different look you can experiment with is toffee coloured lips paired with sexy, smudgy eyes for a modern take on the traditional.

Celebrate Durga Puja in style this year! Play around with hot autumn trends and blend in the traditional elements that will surely make you stand out from the rest

Beauty

The trick to finding the ideal shade of lip colour is quite simple: the most flattering lip tones are one to two shades darker than your natural lip colour. The next time you’re shopping for lipstick, consider the factors below to avoid making an expensive mistake.

Skin tone While picking the right shade is as easy as going a couple shades darker than your natural lip colour, the most important factor to take into consideration when choosing lipstick is your skin tone. Everyone's skin tone, rather than skin colour, tends to have a warmth or coolness to it. Yellow and olive skin tones have a warmth to them, while red undertones, tending towards pink and beige, have a coolness to them. Once you know your skin tone, apply that principle to lipstick.

Broadly speaking, warmer shades of lipstick, those with yellow and orange undertones, will suit a warm skin tone: think cappuccino, caramel, wine, mauves and certain browns with hints of gold and bronze. Cool skin tones work well with shades in the bluish-pink spectrum, including light pink, apricot, berry, blue-toned reds and classic beiges.

Intensity The brightness of your lipstick can have a serious impact on your face as a whole. A colour that apparently seems unsuitable might become suitable depending on the intensity of application. Sometimes, just the correct splash of colour on your

lips will make you look a lot fresher, even if you leave your entire face bare, with almost no make-up on. For lipstick that's a little too bright, you can tone down the colour with a darker liner before applying it. In the evening, take your daytime lip colour to a richer intensity. If you’re wearing a berry lip stain during the day, shift to a more dramatic look with a satiny, burgundy lipstick at night.

Texture and finish Shopping for lipstick doesn’t just end with the lipstick’s colour or your skin tone. You also have an array of choices in terms of textures and finish, often with different formulae names depending on the brand. It’s important to understand what these different formulas offer in order to achieve the look you want.

Lip talk“If I had to teach someone just one thing about lip colour, it would be this: find a lipstick that looks good on your face when you are wearing absolutely no make-up,” Bobbi Brown – ‘Beauty’ Tilat Khayer

Tilat Khayer is an international make-up artist who has worked with celebrities at London Fashion Week and Britain’s Next Top Model. Her brand Roshi operates in the UK and Bangladesh.

Glossy: Sticky and wet in texture, lip gloss is a sheer veil of colour that allows the natural lip tone to shine through by creating a see-through effect.

Shiny: A cross between lip gloss and lipstick, this is suitable for those who are not too keen on the heavy formula. Though smooth and moisturising on application, this lipstick’s colour sometimes fades out, making it ideal for a more natural look.

Creamy: Often highly pigmented, this type of lipstick is perfect for those with cracks or lip lines, as it covers up most imperfections. Creamy lipsticks are great for the less intense colours, as with the brighter colours there is always the danger of colour running or “bleeding.”

Semi-matte/satin:“Semi-matte” refers to lipstick that starts smooth and creamy, but dries down to a finish that is almost matte, with a very slight sheen. This lipstick is great for bright colours, has opaque coverage and is long-lasting.

Matte: This lipstick is ideal for brighter colours. Colour payoff is serious and wear time is incredible. Nothing short of oil will get rid of matte lipstick. The only problem is that it’s very dry, and can be harsh on the lips.

Stonewalled marriage

Photos: Big Stock

Dear AA,My wife and I have been married for a year and half now. She’s my best friend, and we married out of love. Recently, our home has turned into a hellhole, with both of us losing our tempers at the slightest aggravation. We argue about every little thing, even on the phone. I get the feeling that she takes out her anger on me and it hurts my feelings. She doesn’t understand that and shuts herself out, after which we end up fighting all over again. Is there any way I can bring up these problems without either of us getting defensive about it?JM

If you were to share this problem with your friends, you’d be surprised by how many of them go through the same scenario in their marriages, and more than once. If the fighting goes on for more than a few days, you need to sit

down with your wife and talk about it. There may be difficulties with the parents or in-laws, trouble at work, a health problem or feelings of depression. However, the first thing you need to do is try not to react to her anger. She may feel unloved, overworked or unhappy with how your relationship is going. I know it’s difficult not to react to other people’s anger, but you’ll be surprised at how much easier things will become once you try. Here is how to do this:

l Promise yourself that you’ll try not to overreact and make patience something you want

l Remind yourself that you love your wife and would like to make the marriage work

l Know that your ego will not be bruised if you do not reply with the same anger

l Most importantly, breathe out as she gets angry with you, and count to 10, 20 or a 100, if need be, before you reply

l Speak gently with her: do not use the same tone as she does. Yes, I know this is difficult, but it can be done. It’s in your power, do not give in and use the same method as she does

l Do not forget: YOU do not like her method, so don’t use it

l Remind yourself that you want the marriage to go well, and it’s worth the effort. Next time, she may have to do the same for you

l Once she sees you are not battling with her, take her out for a cup of coffee, surprise her by asking her to meet you for a quick lunch and be more affectionate

l Remember, we women are suckers for affection and a gentle touch. A cup of tea served to us, rather than the reverse, will do wonders

l If none of the above work, keep digging deeper

This is a difficult situation, your wife’s behaviour tells us there is a deep pain inside her, as well as some possibly stunted development. You probably fell in love with her “outrageous behaviour.” She seemed fun at the time, but her “fun” behaviour did not stop when you got married. I believe it is worth talking to each other. Condemning her only makes matters worse. Why not ask her what she would like out of the marriage, and what would make her happier in life and in the marriage. Be prepared to listen and not take what she says as criticism. Listen with an open heart;

no happy person wants to behave in the manner you described of your wife’s behaviour. Since you care about your daughter, it is worth the effort: everyone will benefit, you included. Let me know how the talks are going, and I may be able to suggest a different approach. One important thing to remember: COMMUNICATION IS ABOUT LISTENING, NOT ONLY ABOUT WHAT WE SAY. If you listen with an open mind and heart, without condemnation, you will be in charge of your communication: instead of reacting, you will answer in an appropriate manner.

Fighting a lost causeDrama Mama

I’m a 42-year-old man married for the last 18 years to S. I met her when I was in the US and she was just another outrageous woman I dated for a brief period of time. I had no intention of getting serious with her, but before I knew it, she got pregnant, and out of my duty to the mother of my child, I married her. Ever since, my life has been a nightmare. S is an alcoholic who drinks and barely takes care of our child. As a new mother who moved to Bangladesh, she refuses to agree to this society’s norms. She stays out late, rebels against my parents, and even leaves our daughter unattended for hours at a time. Once, she even got into a drunken accident with our daughter in the car. I have only been with her this long for my daughter’s sake, but I can no longer trust her. I want to break free, but I’m afraid of leaving my daughter with bitter memories. What should I do?

Letters to Venus

I am a 23-year-old woman working at an ad firm. My boss and I started dating about four months ago. Everything’s going fine, except for the fact that he doesn’t want anyone in the office or his family to know what’s going on between us. We have to be careful where and when we go on dates, and he sometimes cuts our calls short when he thinks someone might be onto us. I am starting to suspect that there is another woman in his life, and that I’m just someone he’s having an affair with. What should I do?

I can understand he needs to be careful, as he is your boss, but, here is the big BUT: you may be right. He may be married or committed to a marriage, and you may be “the little bit on the side.” Talk to him, and tell him you would like to introduce him to your family and friends. If he finds an excuse, you will soon know his intentions. The sooner, the better! If your fears are valid, refuse to see him, even if he makes

promises and asks for more time. If he is married and says his wife does not understand him, or that he’s staying married at the moment for the sake of his children, run for your life. If you do give in to his requests, you will be sucked into the relationship, and it will be more difficult for you to get out of it. The pond is full of fish and he is not the only one. Look after yourself and your future.

Butterlicious Tips & Tricks

Butter, the golden queen of baking has always been a staple for those of us who enjoy cakes, ice cream and chocolates. What most of us were unaware of is its ability to be more than just that vital ingredient in our baking expeditions. Not only does butter help onions last longer, they also remove the ghastly smell left on your hands as you work with raw fish. Read on to find out more Natasha Rahman

Eliminate ink stainsDitch the idea of toothbrushes and bleaching products and use butter to remove ink stains instead. Whether it’s a stain left on your table top or ink stains left on your child’s pencil box, rub a little butter on it and wait for two minutes. Rinse with soap and water to reveal a clean surface.

Remove the smell of raw fishWhen preparing raw fish for cooking, it often leaves quite an unpleasant smell on your hands. Rub your hands with butter and then rinse with hand wash to completely remove the stench.

Untangle jewelleryIf you’re fed up of patiently working through a mesh of entwined jewellery, use a teaspoon of butter on the tangled area and then use a sharp pencil to run through it.

Preserve onionsIf you’ve cut and used just half an onion, do not worry about the rest of it getting spoilt. Rub butter around the unused section, wrap it in aluminum foil and store it until its next use.

Mexican cuisine has a seductive appeal for food lovers. The spicy, delectable crunch of tacos and their mouth-watering appearance make these tortillas filled with grilled meat and hot sauce a fantasic favourite for foodies to indulge in Abdullah-Al-Mamun

Tips and tricks for decorating your studio apartment

r Lack of adequate light can affect your mood. Parting the drapes and adding plenty of light fixtures will help you sleep better and stay positive.

r The whole idea is to make your studio apartment look complete despite having limited space. If a table, chair and lamp constitute a reading area in a corner, go one step further by defining that smaller space with a rug and framed print.r Vertical storage on the walls

allows you to free up valuable space on your floor (which is sparse) by mounting everything from your bike (literally) to your jewellry.

r Opt for furnishing items that do double-duty. Example: Some footstools or seating cubes open to provide handy storage.

r To avoid giving your studio apartment a messy look, provide open spaces which will allow the eye to rest, and be selective about the objects you display.

You don’t have an extended family network to fall back on, or you just don't want to impose on them. You also don't have excess cash to pay rent for a full apartment, yet you need a place of your own. Studio apartments are the answer.

A studio apartment is very modest in size, with a small, basic kitchen, a toilet and a room that functions as a combined living room, dining room and bedroom. These types of units are common in crowded cities, such as Hong Kong, where space is premium. Dhaka is in dire need of the same.

As a growing economy, we see more and more young people joining the white-collar workforce. With many family units no longer conforming to the traditional definition of a household, a lot of frustrated individuals and young couples are desperately looking for an affordable address to call their own.

a Nazimgarh Resorts’ new ventures, “Wilderness” and “Nature Park” are located at Lalakhal, in the north-east corner of Bangladesh, nestled at the base of Jaintia Hills in the Indian state of Meghalaya. Lalakhal was once a part of the ancient Jaintia (Khasi) Kingdom, of Jaintiapur. A portion of this kingdom today is Jaintiapur upazila

a Sand and other minerals flow from the hills into the river

that give the waters a unique blue-green colour. While in the dry season the river is mild, its crystal clear water of an emerald colour, in the rainy season it become a raging torrent, at times over flowing its banks

a Around 1340 AD, Ibne Battuta of Morocco, one of the greatest travellers of all time, is said to have ventured down this river on his return journey after visiting Hazrat Shah Jalal in Sylhet

a Lalakhal is truly a magical place. First time visitors as well as seasoned travellers are enchanted by the cloud adorned mountains, the lush green forests and the blue green waters of the river. This location is bound to become one of Bangladesh’s premier tourist destinations

Did you know?

Nazimgarh “Nature Park” is located on the banks of the Sharee River at Lalakhal, a picturesque place at the base of the Jaintia Hills. The “Sharee” originates at a height of 1420m (4650ft) from a place called Mitimyntdu, close to Jowai town of the west Jaintia Hills. There, the river is known as Myntdu or “Ka Tawiarka Takam” (Our Guardian Angel) in the local Pnar (Khasi) dialect. Encircling Jowai town on three sides, the Myntdu flows south through Leshka valley to reach Borghat village within Jaintia Hills before entering Bangladesh as the “Sharee” at Lalakhal. The resort is on the banks of the river Sharee, near its sister resort “Wilderness,” which is located on the hillside. The “River Queen” restaurant is the focal point with its panoramic view following the bend in the river. The “Adventure Camp” tent site is nearby, under the shade of the surrounding trees. Eight comfortable tents with a capacity of 30 persons give guests a sense of nature and adventure rarely available in other places. The clear night sky allows one to see stars with such clarity that its needs to be experienced to be believed.

Nature Park: Wilderness:

“Wilderness” is in a spectacular location where a gushing mountain river, lush green forests, blue skies, and cloud-adorned mountains all come together. Countless shades of green, yellow, and brown from the trees, forests and paddy fields, mesmerise the visitor. The monsoon rains are an experience rarely found anywhere else in the world..The privacy, tranquility, and the sheer quietness, the only sounds likely to be heard are of birds chirping, make it not just a resort, but a sanctuary. The resort with its 40 rooms is spread over several closely grouped buildings and is centered around a blue infinity edge swimming pool and wooden pool deck. The surrounding hills and valleys are landscaped with fruit trees and flower gardens. The trees and gardens are also home to a variety of tropical birds. Walking and trekking trails, outdoor sitting areas, observation lounges and large ponds give guests a sense of serenity. The resort is approximately 45km from the city. One has to take the National Sylhet-Tamabil (N2) Highway to Shareeghat (38km) and then it’s another 7km to Lalakhal. One can also take a mechanised boat from Shareeghat, the cruise takes between 20 to 40 minutes, depending on the type of vessel and the season.
