2016 Awards Changes Through the awards packet, all new changes for the 2016 season are highlighted in yellow. Here are the changes listed out for your reference.

Coaches will now have the ability to edit and add to completed nominations after the nomination deadline has passed. This will allow coaches and SIDs the ability to add stats and awards earned

after the nomination deadline (Nov. 26). ALL STATS MUST BE UPDATED IN EACH

ATHLETE'S NOMINATION.

COACHES WILL STILL BE REQUIRED TO NOMINATE ATHLETES PRIOR TO THE

DEADLINE. Coaches will not be able to submit new nominations after the deadline – only edit existing nominations. Coaches and SIDs will use the same nomination link to access previous nominations and make edits. Here are the items that will need to be updated:

o Updated Win/Loss records

o Updated Awards and Recognition with any potential conference awards

o Updated Stats vs All Opponents, Nationally Ranked Teams, and Top 100 Teams

o New Match-by-Match stats attachment

Because coaches will be able to update their nominations with new stats, voting coaches and

regional committee members will exclusively review athletes stats using the AVCA Stats

Portal. The AVCA will no longer email out spreadsheet comparisons of athlete stats. A link to the AVCA Stats Portal will be sent out with the voting ballot link.

The process for naming the AVCA Nationally Ranked teams is changing as well. This year, on Wednesday, November 9, the AVCA will download the full week-by-week RPKI rankings from Rich Kern. The 50 teams that appear in the Top 50 RKPI rankings the most during the 2016 season (not including preseason) will be named the 2016 Nationally Ranked Teams. The 100 teams that appear in the Top 100 RKPI rankings the most during the 2016 season (not including preseason) will be named the 2016 AVCA Top 100 Teams.

AVCA Postseason Student-Athlete Awards Information The AVCA women’s volleyball postseason awards program is in its 36

th year. The AVCA is proud to honor deserving student-athletes

annually by selecting All-Region (one 14-person team and six honorable mention student-athletes per region) and All-America teams (14 student-athletes per a first, second and third team), highlighted by the selection of the AVCA Division I Player of the Year. The AVCA All-America selection committee is comprised of ten members, in addition to the AVCA Awards chairperson (page 3). To ensure geographic representation, these individuals represent the ten AVCA Awards Regions listed on the previous page. The AVCA All-Americans and Division I Player of the Year and Freshman of the Year will be recognized at the AVCA All-America/Players of the Year Banquet at the 2016

AVCA Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio on December 16.

NOMINATING

PROCEDURES

The postseason nomination procedure is an online process. There are no restrictions regarding how many student-athletes one team may nominate, as there are no restrictions on the number of student-athletes that one team can have placed on the AVCA All-Region/All-American teams. Please use your professional judgment to only nominate those student-athletes who legitimately have a chance to earn AVCA All-Region

honors. The All-Region team members as well as Honorable Mention selections will be considered

for All-America first, second, third teams or Honorable Mention if a Video File is uploaded by Dec. 8

@ 5 pm (ET).

NOMINATION

RULES &

REQUIREMENTS

The general requirements for nominating a student-athlete for AVCA postseason honors are: • The student-athlete must meet all eligibility requirements as listed in the rules adopted by her respective

institution; • The student-athlete may be in her first, second, third or fourth year of eligibility; • The student-athlete must be nominated by her institution;

• The student-athlete must have participated in 2/3 (66.7%) of all sets (not matches) during the current season at the time of the nomination deadline;

AVCA Two-Thirds Participation Waiver: Student-Athletes who fail to participate in two-thirds of all sets (not matches) during the current season due to Institution-approved participation in Olympic, Pan American, World Championships or World University Games are eligible for AVCA All-America consideration if all other nomination requirements are met. All regular deadlines, policies and procedures remain in effect. No statistical information may be substituted. The official participation documents must accompany the nomination.

• All deadlines and guidelines must be met for a nomination to be considered – NO EXCEPTIONS; • The student-athlete’s head coach must be a member in good standing of the American Volleyball Coaches

Association. Head coaches have until Nov. 21, 2016, to become a member or renew their membership to ensure compliance.

TERMS FOR

DISQUALIFICATION

REGION FRESHMAN OF

THE YEAR CANDIDATES

Failure to meet the above stated rules and requirements may result in the disqualification of a student-athlete from AVCA All-Region and All-America consideration. Candidates for AVCA Region Freshman of the Year must be true freshman. Only one nominee per school is allowed per year. The AVCA National Freshman of the Year will be selected from the ten AVCA Region Freshmen of the Year and any freshman recognized on an All-Region Team (excludes All-Region

Honorable Mention selections) IF a video upload is submitted to the AVCA for these student-athletes.

Please Note: If a freshman is named as All-Region Honorable Mention, she will not be considered for

National Freshman of the Year. She must be named as the Region Freshman of the Year and/or

named to the 14-person All-Region Team and have video submitted to be considered. The National Freshman of the Year video footage requirements are the same as the All-America video footage requirements. Remember, if video footage is not submitted for a freshman who was selected as Region Freshman of the Year or named to the All-Region Team, this eliminates her from National Freshman of the Year and All-America consideration.

The regional committee will review the votes and name the 14 members All-Region team. Voting coaches and All-Region Committee members will still be encouraged to have fair representation from all positions.

Once online nominations close on Saturday, Nov. 26, the AVCA will ready the online regional voting. All AVCA member head coaches will vote for the players they feel are most deserving of the award. The voting

will take place from 8 a.m. (ET) on Monday, Nov. 28 through 5 p.m. (ET) on Friday, Dec. 2. Along with the ability to view the individual nominations, coaches will also have access to the AVCA online statistics portal that allows the ability to sort and review key statistics for each position and nominated athlete.

Rules and Notes regarding All-Region Selections

Regional Committees will review the voting and name the All-Region teams.

AVCA All-America Video File Upload Requirements

All NCAA Division I athletes named All-Region or All-Region Honorable Mention must have an All-American video

produced and sent to the AVCA by the deadline in order to be considered for AVCA All-American awards. First, second, or third team All-America honors will be selected from the All-Region selections. All American Honorable Mention

selections will come from athletes named All-Region or All-Region Honorable Mention. Video file uploads are due by 5

pm (ET) on Thursday, December 8.

Video File Upload REQUIREMENTS

Video File Upload:

Compile the necessary clips into one video file.

Upload the video to Vimeo (steps included) or Dropbox link provided by AVCA

Submit a completed Video Identification form via email to [email protected].

Video Upload Creation All Athletes at All Positions:

An on-screen identification must appear at the beginning of the video, including: • Athlete’s Name • Uniform number • An on-screen photo of the nominee is suggested

Two TOTAL segments in this order: one 2-minute highlight package segment; one 3-minute continuous play segment

o Rules for creating the 2-minute highlight package segment

One highlight segment maximum of 2 minutes. Footage from television matches may be used

and spliced into this segment. No sound, enhancement (includes slow motion), or

propaganda allowed.

o Rules for creating the 3-minute continuous segment: Before the continuous segment begins, coaches must include an identification card that shows

the athlete’s:

Starting position

Uniform number

Name of opponent and date of match

TV footage may not be used in the 3-minute continuous play segment.

The footage used must come from a single set (i.e., you may not use two minutes from the end of set 1 and the first minute of set 2).

Footage MUST be shot from the end line (elevated view preferred, floor-level view may be a

disadvantage).

The nominee may be on either side of the net for this segment of the video

You must edit out large stoppages of play including timeouts, floor wiping, officials’ discussions ect. It is important not to exclude any play during the editing process.

Do not edit short dead time between serves that does not include the above exceptions. Any

other editing will disqualify your student-athlete.

Before the start of each segment, coaches may choose to include an information card that includes impressive stats or achievements that could be used to boost the athlete’s candidacy as an All-American

Nominees will be disqualified for any of the following:

Late receipt of nomination materials and video upload file

Inappropriate editing of footage segments as detailed above

Any part of the requirements above are not met (including missing video segments)

12

Supporting Documentation:

You MUST include the official NCAA Box Score Forms for the 3-minute segment and the Video Identification Form (page 13). These must be emailed to the AVCA at [email protected]

Video Upload Files:

View and time your video file before submitting

o The AVCA highly suggests reviewing the video with other members of the volleyball staff

If the athlete is not able to be identified by jersey #, then the footage is not being shot close enough for adequate viewing purposes

Highlight the nominee, not the rally.

Showing the student-athlete in the best possible manner may mean including footage from a match against your strongest competition even if it is not your student-athlete's best match. The committee members are interested in rating your student-athlete against the best competition you faced.

For better player identification, zoom in as close as possible to the court; maintain the end line and the antennas

as your guide. (Antennas should be shown). Do not use arrows to point out athlete!

AVCA Coaches Award Programs The American Volleyball Coaches Association annually honors deserving coaches through its Regional and National Coach of the Year and Victory Club programs. REGIONAL/

NATIONAL

COACHES OF THE

YEAR

For the 38th year, the women’s volleyball coaches of the AVCA will select Regional/National

Coaches of the Year. The AVCA Region Coach of the Year Nomination Form is included in this

packet and can be found on page 17. This form must be received by the AVCA office by

Wednesday, November 30, 2016. All AVCA member coaches are asked to nominate someone in their respective region based on the following criteria:

1) team success during current season; 2) team improvement from previous season; 3) fulfillment of team potential; and 4) professional manner and attitude of the coach.

Because the AVCA has split the conferences into separate divisions, it is strongly

encouraged that coaches complete hand written nominations for Region Coach of the

Year. This is due to the possibility that the Conference Coach of the Year may be coaching

in a separate region.

Nominations should be sent to the AVCA office and selections will be made during the respective conference calls. Each Conference Coach of the Year is an automatic nominee for AVCA Region Coach of the Year. Each AVCA Region Coach of the Year is an automatic nominee for AVCA National Coach of the Year, along with the regional finalist coaches. Presentation of the awards

will take place on Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Jostens Coaches Honors Luncheon at the 2016 AVCA Annual Convention in Columbus, Ohio.

VICTORY

CLUB

Since 1985, the AVCA has recognized coaches who reach career victory milestones with its Victory Club awards. The AVCA Victory Club form can be found on the AVCA website here: https://www.avca.org/awards/victory-club.html. This form must be received at the AVCA office by

Friday, Nov. 11, 2016. We prefer that you mail or email the form to the AVCA office.

The AVCA will host the Victory Club Recognition Breakfast on Friday, December 16.
