2. INTRODUCTION

A) INTRODUCTION

The original P180 design was a collaborationwith Learjet to develop a high speedturboprop executive aircraft that would befast yet economical to operate, given theproblems associated with fuel availability andcost.

The partnership lasted three years but endedin 1986 in with Piaggio continuingdevelopment on its own.

The prototype Piaggio P180 flew on 23September 1986 and U.S. and Italiancertification was obtained on 7 March 1990. Itwas not until an injection of capital frominvestors headed up by Ferrari in 1998 thatreal progress was made on the road toproduction.

The 100th. P180 was delivered to itscustomer in October 2005 and a further 50airframes were produced over the followingthree years.

In November 2005 an improved version namedAvanti II, obtained European and U.S.certification and six months later, 70 planeswere already ordered, including 36 byAvantair.

The Avanti II improvements included upratedPratt & Whitney Canada PT6 turbopropengines giving performance improvements,an all-new “Glass cockpit installationprovides advanced avionics, real timeweather radar and graphic depiction andcollision avoidance systems.

The Avanti's turboprop engines are positionedwell aft and are housed in nacelles mountedin a high-aspect ratio wing located behind thecabin. This design provides for uninterruptedroom in the cabin and distinct sound

deadening advantages. Compact, multi-blade“pusher” props are more efficient thanstandard propellers.

The advanced wing design although very shortin cord, combines with forward winglets in a“canard” style configuration, with automatic“flaps” on the trailing edges that operatewith the main flaps to produce maximum lift.Laminar flow reduces drag by up to 50% withthe advanced airfoil shapes. As a result ofadvanced design techniques, the wing is 34%smaller than that of a conventional aircraft ofsimilar dimensions and performance.

A “t” tail configuration counteracts the nose-down tendencies exhibited by a centre ofgravity that is well forward of the centre oflift..

The design of the cabin is in itself a from ofairfoil section and according to Piaggio, actually contributes to the lift qualities of theairframe by as much as 20%.

B) SPECIFICATIONSCrew: one or two pilotsCapacity: up to nine passengersCabin dimensions: 1.75 m (5 ft 9 in) high, 1.85m (6 ft 1 in) wide, 4.45 m (14 ft 7 in) longPayload : 907 kg (2,000 lb)Length: 14.41 m (47 ft 3½ in)Wingspan: 14.03 m (46 ft 0½ in)Height: 3.97 m (13 ft 0¾ in)Wing area: 16 m² (172.2 ft²)Empty weight: 7,800 lbUseful load: 1 4,350 lbMaximum takeoff weight: 12,150 lbPowerplants : 2×P26A-66B Turboprops, 634kW (850 shp) eachPropellers: 2×Hartzell 5-blade 85” dia.

11,900 m (39,000 ft) with reservesService ceiling: 12,500 m (41,000 ft)Rate of climb: 14.98 m/s (2,950 ft/min)Wing loading: 327 kg/m² (67.1 lb/ft²)

C) WALKAROUNDApproaching the AvantII from the front, thefirst items to notice are the forward“winglets” Not strictly “canards” they haveno control surface but do have integrated“flaps” on the trailing edges which operatein tandem with the main wing flaps. You willnotice that they also have reverse dihedralto counteract stall characteristics of such asystem.

The nose wheel is fully steerable and retractsinto its well and is completely covered by thegear doors which, like all moveable parts ofthe fuselage, are a flush fit.

Immediately forward of the nose gear is aretractable housing that carries the landinglamp arrays. This is operated from thecockpit when the landing lamps are selecteddown.

Several pitot probes populate the nose andfeed the vast array of high techinstrumentation to be found in the cockpit.

Moving down the left or port side of thefuselage, the main entrance door is split intoto sections. The upper segment opensoutward as per a “normal” door while thebase segment drops downward to form aboarding step arrangement. This obviates theneed for any kind of separate boarding ladderor steps.

Again, the doors fold to a flush fit in theaerodynamically shaped fuselage. Even thehandle is recessed into a special housing. The windows allow for maximumuninterrupted viewing and the wing mountedwell-aft means that nothing gets in the way!The shape of the fuselage is apparent as onemoves further aft. Its subtle airfoil sectionblending perfectly into the pointed tail, where one finds “Learjet” style fins tocounter stall.

The wings are extremely advanced pieces ofengineering and apart from being very thinare also narrow resulting in an elegant shape. The leading edges of the wings containheated sections for de-icing. Such is thetechnology of the paint systems in thisremarkable aeroplane that no further de-icing boot is required. The paint handles anyheat generated.

Fowler style flaps extend outward and

downward using screw jacks (look closely andyou will see these operating) housed instreamlined “pods” at the rear of each wing.Lowered to full extension these flaps allowthe AvantiII to take full advantage of smallairfields with short strips. So, in real terms, there is no need for operators to build inlarger airports and fields into their flightplanning. Smaller, conventional inner flapsoperate in tandem to maximize the lift of thewings.

The advanced ailerons have distinctivebalance horns at the ends which housenavigation lamps.

Each nacelle houses a powerful Pratt andWhitney PT6 Turboprop engine. Uniquely, theengine is mounted in “pusher-prop”configuration. The leading edges of theintake mouths are fitted with de-icing bootswhich automatically inflate to disperse theice quickly. Props require no de-icingequipment as they live constantly in the hotexhaust gasses produced by the engines.Access panels fitted to the nacelles allow forinstant and easy-access servicing of theengines and equipment. The port nacellehatch on this simulation can be lifted toreveal a detailed engine beneath!

Moving back to the fuselage, the main geardoors are split. The forward door remainsopen when the gear is lowered but the aftdoor retracts once the gear is clear, to retainaerodynamic efficiency and reduce buffeting. The gear itself is quite complex and rotatesup and down in a distinctive manner, finishingup inside the airframe at a 90 degree angle. This system is often seen on highperformance jet fighters. And is designed toconserve space.

As a result, two large luggage lockers areavailable behind lockable hatches whichincorporate the trailing edges of thewingroots. This gives the Avanti II a cargocapacity of 44 cubic feet. A lot more than anexecutive overnight bag!

The big tail section is of “T” configurationwith a large elevator carried on a movablehorizontal. The horizontal can rotate up anddown by degrees, to provide trim to theairframe when in flight.

The rudder is conventional and carries a trimtab.

Moving inside the aeroplane we now head forthat technically advanced cockpit!

‘Glass Cockpit’ ARRAYSThere are basically three main displays tounderstand here:1) Pilot and co-pilot’s PFD (Primary FlightDisplay)2) Central EICAS ( Engine Instrument andCrew Alert System)3) FMC (Flight Management Computer)

PFD

This screen displays the most importantinformation for flying, which is why it iscalled the Primary Flight Display. The toppart shows the AHI (Artificial HorizonIndicator) 1, with the Flight Modeannunciator (FMA) on the top 2, whichdisplays the autopilot modes, the AIRSPEEDis on the left 3 and the ALTITUDE on theright 4.The bottom part shows the HIS (horizontalsituation indicator) with the currentheading 5, and the VOR1/VOR2/ADFneedles 6. On the left and right you can seethe selected VOR1/VOR2/ADF station withits name and distance when available7. Onthe bottom part, you can read the GroundSpeed (GS) 8, the UTC time 9 and the TrueAirspeed (TAS) 10.

By clicking the centre of this screen (andthe centre of the MFD screen) you canbring up a separate zoomed version toposition in your screen for reference.

MFD

This screen has 2 main functions:Navigation Display (ND) and EngineInformation Display. In ND mode, thecurrent flight plan is shown in arc or rosemode, with the heading, distance and ETA(estimated time of arrival) to the nextwaypoint 1. On the top part, you can alsoread the current heading and course forthe VOR1/ILS 2. On the bottom part, youcan read the GS and TAS like on the PFD 3,and also the SAT (Satured Air Temperature)4. and TAT (Total Air Temperature) 5.

You can click on the FORMAT button (topright button) 6. to change the format ofthe ND: arc, rose or plan.

The arc mode displays what is in front ofthe aircraft while the rose mode displaysall around the aircraft. The plan mode is different because it isalways north-oriented and centered on thewaypoint that is first displayed on the FMCflight plan page. The plan mode is useful toscroll around your flight plan and see howit looks. The ND range can be adjusted with theRANGE knob, on the left of the MFD 7. Theweather radar image can also be shown onthe ND view by pressing the RADAR button(on the control panel): press once to turn iton in “test” mode, press it again to make itactive 8.

Pressing the ENG button (below theFORMAT button) 9. displays the engineinformation screen which displays theengine information: TQ is torque, ITT isinter-turbine temperature. You also haveinformation about oil (temperature andquantity), fuel flow, Hydraulics fluid(pressure and quantity) and fuel quantity.

FMC

The CDU (Control Display Unit) is thedisplay unit of the FMC (Flight ManagementComputer). The CDU has several pages:

1) MENU page: direct access to other pages+ ability to import a Flight Simulator flightplan. The FS flight plan must be created orloaded into the flight planner first, then itcan be imported in the FMC using thisoption.

2) STATUS page: shows the status of thenavigation database (AIRAC) with itsactivity period, and the current date andtime.

3) POS INIT: Useful to set the initialposition of the FMC positioning system. Youcan use the stored FMS position or thecurrent GPS position. Click on one of themto fill the scratchpad and press the theRSK5 (5th right button) labelled SET POS toenter the position. You can also enter an airport ICAO code onLSK3 to take this airport position as areference.

4) FPLN page: First enter the departureand arrival airport ICAO codes. When this isdone, the total flight plan distanceappears. You can enter a flight number onLSK4 if you wish. Then you can press RSK6to access the LEGS page.

5) LEGS page: It shows the legs of yourroute. It initially shows only the departureand arrival airports. You can insert as manywaypoints as you wish by entering theirname in the scratchpad and click on theLSK that corresponds to the waypointbefore which you want to insert thewaypoint. If several waypoints correspond to thename you have chosen, the DUPLICATESpage appears to let you select the one youwant. Each time you insert a waypoint, the flightplan is recomputed and the heading anddistance between waypoints is displayed onthe FPLN page.

6) DEP APP page: You can press the DEP ARRbutton to access this page. It lets youselect the departure and arrival runwaysand procedures (SID/STAR).

SETTING THE CURRENTPOSITION ON THE FMSTo set the current position on the POS INITpage, you can get the GPS position byclicking LSK2. The GPS position comes inthe scratchpad, and pressing RSK5 lets youset it as the current position. You can alsoenter it manually using the format: XXXX.XXA/YY YY.YYB where XX XX.XX is thelatitude (A is N or S) and YY YY.YY is thelongitude (B is E or W). For example, to enter43°25.10N/01°22.15W, enter 43 25.10N/0122.15W in the scratchpad and press RSK5.

WEATHER RADARTo activate the radar display, use thebutton on the Pilot’s control panel marked“Radar”.

Press once to put radar into Test mode.

Press again to activate the radar screenand press a third time to close the radarscreen. The Weather Radar covers a range from 20to 80 NM. Therefore, the ND mode must beset higher than 10 NM.

NAV/GPS FLIGHT PLANAfter loading a flight plan, the NAV/GPSbutton is inoperative and the aircraft cannot fly the flight plan.Indeed, there is a function that blocks theGPS guidance mode, otherwise it wouldconflict the FMS guidance mode.

In order to fly a GPS flight plan, load theflight plan in FSX and activate the “IMPORTFPLN” function on the MENU page.

4) FLYING THE AVANTI

A. OVERVIEWSome points worth mentioning before weget going.

First thing to remember is that you areflying a turboprop, not a jet. It is easy toforget when the engines and props are wayout of sight! Unlike many conventionalturboprops the AvantiII uses just two leversper engine to control major functions. The“throttles” control engine power settingsand lift and pull aft for reverse thrust onthe props. A second lever controls fuelshutoff for engine start and stop, selectsthe idle speed and controls propeller RPM.

The fuel pumps, ignition and start switchesare mounted in a panel on the console, ahead of the engine controls.

As mentioned earlier, nosewheel steering isavailable via the pedals but controlled by ahat switch on the pilot’s yoke, for taxi orrunway operation. Pressing the hatswitchwill activate (or-de-activate) the nose-steering, much like locking and unlocking atailwheel in a conventional “tail-dragger”.

All engine management, navigation andsituational awareness is recorded anddisplayed on the screens in fron of you.Thoroughly familiarize yourself with theoperation of these displays before youattempt to fly!

The Avanti II is a fast , thoroughly modernaeroplane that is easy to fly once thesystems are mastered. Runway speeds arehigh for a turboprop and well in excess of100 knots indicated will be seen before thenose will begin to lift. Although veryefficient, that thin wing needs a lot ofthrust to generate lift!No yaw damper is necessary thanks to thetail fins and the Avanti II is a sweet

tempered flying machine in all axis andstall is benign. The front wing goes firstresulting in a gentle nose-down attitude install.

OK let’s get started!

For the purposes of this guide we willassume a “cold, dark cockpit” that is allsystems including batteries shut down.
