Cultural Note: Formal Vs Informal

In Spanish (and many other languages), there are two words for “you” – one that is formal and one that is informal. Tú = you (informal)

used with friends and family Usted = you (formal)

used with strangers and people in authority

As we went over vocabulary, what did you notice about how Spanish is different from other languages in terms of how it is written?

Cultural Note: Written Spanish á, é, í, ó, ú (accents)

Put emphasis on a syllable

ñ (tildes) Make a “ny” sound

¿Cómo…? (question marks) Let you know ahead of time to read it like a question

¡Qué…! (exclamation points) Let you know ahead of time to read it like an exclamation

el / la (both mean “the”) There are actually 4 words for “the” in Spanish. We’ll learn more about

that later.
