LONDON’S MARKETS
Street markets are fun to visit although you don’t want to buy anything. Many of
London’s street markets have existed since 1600s or earlier and sell everything from
flowers and fruits to books and furniture. There are local markets in almost every part of
London. Many of them are only open on some days of the week. Here are a few of the
most famous ones.
Covent Garden
In the past this area was called Convent Garden because in the Middle Ages
the land was part of the gardens of a convent. The monks cultivated there
their food. In 1670, it became a fruit and vegetable market. In the 1970s, the
fruit and vegetable sellers moved to another part of the city and Covent
Garden became full of shops which sell: clothes, jewellery, toys or souvenirs.
Shops are open 7 days a week.
Camden Lock and Camden Stables
Market
These two markets are young and very
popular markets that started in the 1970s.
They sell clothes of all sorts, from the latest
street fashions to vintage clothes, jewellery,
leather, books, records, crafts and antiques.
The best time to go is at weekends, where
there are street performers and lots of small
shops selling delicious food.
Portobello Road
This long street goes from Notting
Hill Gate to Landbroke Grove.
Along the street, the shops change
from antiques and jewellery to fruit,
vegetables and other foods and
then to second-hand clothes,
music, street fashion ... Shops are
open during the week but some
stands are only there on Saturdays.
