SELECT REHABILITION NEWS By: Director of Rehab, Lauren Krisch

A Brand New Year - Older adults can benefit from regular physical activity. Growing evidence shows physical exercise does not have to be strenuous or even require a major time

commitment. It is most effective when done regularly, and in combination with a healthy diet, mental activity and social interaction. There are significant health benefits that can be gained with a moderate amount of daily physical activity. As metabolism naturally slows with age, maintaining a healthy weight is a challenge. Exercise helps increase metabolism and builds muscle mass, helping to burn more calories. Physical activity also reduces the impact of illness and chronic disease. People who exercise have a lowered risk of several chronic conditions including Alzheimer’s disease, diabetes, obesity, heart disease, osteoporosis and colon cancer. Please call Lauren Krisch if you have any questions about starting an exercise program or other therapy-related issues. Therapy department phone number is 568-5171.

Stravinsky blended Russian folk traditions and brilliant orchestral colors with his unique style of rhythmic irregularity. The first half of the concert features Bartók’s first Violin Concerto, written two years before The Firebird. The work wasn’t performed until after his death. It was inspired by an infatuation he had for a younger woman. Bartók wrote that the first movement was to “idealized violinist Stefi Geyer, celestial and inward,” the second a character that was “cheerful, witty and amusing.” The concert begins with Khachaturian’s incidental music for a play that is best known for its waltz theme.
