TRAVEL 8 / GOLF 02.10.2016 M y first Ryder Cup was in America — Oakland Hills, in Detroit, in 2004. Thirty minutes before I was due to tee off, the magnitude of the event suddenly hit me. By the time I got on the tee, I was practically shaking. It was loud, it was boisterous — that’s what you get from a Ryder Cup in the States. It’s an insight into the nation’s wider attitude to the game. Here, sport is very much a social thing. You combine it with seeing friends, maybe having a few drinks. That said, America takes its golf seriously, and the courses reflect that — they’re stunning, and usually extremely well maintained. For many, you have to be a member, or know a member, to play, even at my level. But there are plenty of great public courses where you can just turn up. Here are five of my favourites. BETHPAGE STATE PARK, NEW YORK We play such hard courses, week in, week out, so I really enjoy playing public ones, and the Black course here is definitely one of the best. There are holes in the sand dunes, holes in the pines — you feel like you’re playing three or four courses when you’re on it. The views, with all those Pacific rollers, are spectacular, and the 16th is particularly dramatic: a 231yd par 3 that goes straight over to an island green. It’s got tradition, too — it opened in 1928. HOW TO PLAY IT Cypress Point is a private course, but neighbouring Pebble Beach Golf Links offers much the same experience, with plenty of eye-catching oceanfront holes. They’re really into their golf and have a huge amount of courses, including Medinah, which hosted that amazing Ryder Cup in 2012, known as “the miracle” because of our comeback. Cog Hill is one of my favourites. There are four courses here, with No 4 the flagship. It’s known as “Dubsdread” — “dubs” is American slang for a poor golfer. It’s a parkland course redesigned by the golf architect Rees Jones, which means sectioned-off greens with lots of deep bunkers. You’d better be good out of the sand, as this course is a card-killer. There are five courses in total (Black, Red, Blue, Green and Yellow), so it’s a big open space, yet you’re just an hour outside New York City. The Black is famous — it has twice hosted the US Open — so people queue up to play, even sleeping in their cars to ensure they get a tee time. A bit like Wimbledon. SEMINOLE, FLORIDA This is widely considered one of the big four golf courses in America. Much of it sits below sea level, which is kind of an odd fact. It’s built on a coral reef, I believe. It’s mostly about the greens. Tee to green, it’s quite simple, but the greens have a lot of run-off — they’re kind of like upturned bowls — and it’s often quite windy, which makes it difficult to hit and hold them. For me, a memorable course is when you remember every hole after playing it just once, due to individual characteristics. That’s certainly a feature of Seminole. On the West Coast, at Pebble Beach, it’s AUGUSTA, GEORGIA The Masters is one of my favourite tournaments. I’ve played it 11 times. Augusta is certainly one of the most famous courses in the world. It is such a great design, and what makes it particularly special is the severity of the greens. It’s a much hillier course than people realise on television. It’s the first major of the year, everyone is excited and there’s just a different vibe about the place. There are also all the traditions, such as the par-3 tournament on the Wednesday and the Green Jacket for the winner. It’s green, it’s pristine and the TV doesn’t lie — it really is that pretty. HOW TO PLAY IT Simple. Qualify for the Masters, or drink in the same pub as Ian Woosnam, Nick Faldo or another former winner who can sign you in for a round.
