Book of The BoThy

‘It’s a glorified shed surely?’ I exclaimed when I first caught sight of The Teahouse. Unlike the stone shelters I’d stayed at before, this one seemed uncannily small and cabin-like. It looked like a miniature version of the huts you’d expect to find in the Alps rather than a run-of-the-mill bothy.I’d spoken to other walkers who’d been here before and they advised me not to plan an overnighter – too cold, they’d said. But now when I arrived at the end of a summer’s day, it was as though it had been storing up sunlight for the last eight hours and now felt cosy and warm. The whole place seemed like it touched the people who visited. One kind soul had even brought wood treatment in to attempt to paint the wood – it didn’t need it, the wood was meant to be left in the

elements to build up its own protection – which a note kindly informed any future do-gooders.

There were cups and containers for collecting water, and on the wall by the door was a bookshelf containing, among other things, some copies of Beatrix Potter’s books about Peter Rabbit.

I hadn’t read the stories about the adventurous bunny since I was a child. Now, in this pretty little valley, in the kind of shed I imagined the grumpy Scottish gardener Mr McGregor from Potter’s tales would have used to house his tools, I was a child once more. Nestled away in my little den, I was no longer in Scotland, but among the potatoes and cabbages of the garden with little Peter lost in a world of imagination. When I came to the part when Peter’s mother put him to bed, I got in bed too. I made some camomile tea and, like Peter, enjoyed my brew one spoon at a time...

iSle of Skye

The LookoutA former coastguard’s watch post with

unrivalled views of the sea

There’s something special about the Isle of Skye – the constant sea views, the layer upon layer of volcanic rock scoured into other-worldly shapes and towers. The northernmost reach is arguably one of the best spots and is home to the Rubha Hunish, a headland that seeps into the water in a jagged fringe of rock. Above, the cliffs sharply rise up in dramatic fashion, the white stone seeming to glisten as brightly as the nearby lighthouses on the Isle of Lewis. At the top of this natural tower is something manmade – a small bothy.

Built in 1928, The Lookout was just that – a former watch station for the coastguard – which accounts for the superb views out over The Minch and the Isle of Lewis and Harris in the Outer Hebrides. Come the 1970s, with advances in technology, it was no longer needed and became something of a

Walking the Jurassic CoastDorset and east Devon – The walks, the rocks, the fossilsRoNALD TURNBULL

This World Heritage coastline is named after a 60-million-year span of geology, and so the enjoyable walking is only half the story. This guidebook includes over 30 walks to the Jurassic Coast of Devon and Dorset, stretching between exmouth and Swanage, with some routes venturing inland. Ranging from short easy strolls to longer challenging walks, the spectacular geology encountered is brought to life and explained in an accessible way for all readers.

SUe VICCARS

A 187km (116-mile) largely off-road walking route across Devon. The route is described from south to north, from Wembury on the south coast, through Dartmoor and mid-Devon, then across exmoor to Lynmouth on the Bristol Channel. The trek can be adjusted to suit each walker, and can take between a week to 10 days, through Devon’s remote and peaceful countryside, often far from the holiday crowds.

Greensand and Chalk which were

the bed of that soupy sea slice clean

across the older beds, chopping off the

tops of the older (Triassic and Jurassic)

rocks. At any one place (Golden Cap,

say) it just looks as if the Chalk sits on

top of other rocks in the ordinary way.

It’s over several walks, or in the cliff

diagram at the back of this book, that

you appreciate that the Chalk doesn’t

just sit on the earlier rocks, but actu-

ally cuts across them.

An unconformity is where one

rock sits on the eroded down remains

of an earlier one, implying a time-

gap of missing rocks between. The

unconformity at the base of the Chalk

Sea can be traced from Hampshire

to Devon: it’s known as the Great

Unconformity.
