Talk by Mitch Jones on 'Some Famous and Infamous Prisoners

held in the Tower of London'

Retired Yeoman Warder, Mitch Jones, will bereturning to talk to us about some of the mostinteresting prisoners who have been held in theTower of London.

These could be tales to make your hair stand onend – not to be missed!

Wednesday 16th October - 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre

Presentation by Barry Price on'Photographs and Memorabilia of the 1st

and 2nd World Wars'

Barry Price has an extensive collection ofphotographs and also memorabilia from the twoWorld Wars.

As part of his talk he will be bringing along someof the most interesting and unusual items from his

collection to put a new perspective on these two conflicts that now are historysubjects for our grand children!

Thursday 12th November - 7.15pm at the Riverside Centre

The AGM and update by Mike Greenslade

The AGM will, besides the normal items, deal with theretirement of long serving Committee Members and theneed for new Committee Members if the Association is tocontinue.

Mike Greenslade, the NT's Manager for the Island, willbe telling us about his first year in post and his plansfor the future, particularly in respect of the ComptonBay Project

Saturday 14th December – 7pm at Arreton Community Centre

Christmas Buffet and live entertainment

Following last year's successful use of ArretonCommunity Centre with its good facilities and carparking, we are going to use this venue again thisyear.

There will be the customary buffet meal withentertainment by the Island group 'Millicent'sFavourite'

Wednesday 8th January - 2.15pm at theRiverside Centre

Talk by Patrick Keen on 'Through the AmazonRainforest to find the King George Falls'

Patrick will take us on a unique and epic journey ofdiscovery through the Amazon rainforest to find theremote and rarely visited King George VI Falls.

He will describe his encounters with species suchas anacondas and mountain lions and with theindigenous Amerindians who had never seen white men before and who hunt withbows and arrows and deadly blow pipes.

Wednesday 12th February - 2.15pm at the Riverside Centre

Mark Russell will be giving a presentationon 'Exercise and the Green Gym'

The Green Gym is a well established Isle of WightCommunity Group who carry out conservationwork whilst at the same time improving their health.

The success of their activities was recognised bythe presentation of a Queens Award for VoluntaryService over 10 years ago.

Wednesday 11th March – 2.15pm in the Riverside Centre

Talk by Mark Earp on 'Prince Albert on the Isle ofWight'

Prince Albert's childhood was difficult with an unloving familyaround him.

But he was able to blossom and use his creative skills when hemarried Queen Victoria – really a case of 'called out of darknessinto the light'

Mark's talk will explore this truly remarkable transformation.

Annual Members' Spring Lunch

In view of the success of last year's lunch at theNew Holmwood Hotel in Cowes, it has beendecided to again use the hotel for the Spring Lunch.

BOOKING IS ESSENTIAL FOR THE LUNCH

Numbers are limited and places will be reservedas and when payment is received. A 'reserveslist' will be maintained in case of cancellations.

Talk by Adrian Searle on 'Sophie Dawes'

Sophie Dawes is the subject of Adrian Searle's latest book.

Sophie, was born 1792, the daughter of an alcoholicsmuggler in St Helens and spent her childhood in abjectpoverty. She was eventually sent to the workhouse inNewport, and from there, via a very circuitous route, becomethe mistress of the Duke of Bourbon, who was soon tobecome the last Prince of Conde.
