WELCOME

Hello.elcome to this jam-packed autumn issue of t. In this issue, we paid a visit to one of the many agricultural shows that Tesco attends up and down the country each year. As someone who

the Great Yorkshire Show was a real eye-opener for me and a fantastic chance to see how we build and maintain great relationships with the farming community. Find out more on pages 10-15.

As the veganism trend continues to grow, mushrooms are becoming more and more popular. Smithy Mushrooms in Lancashire has been one of our suppliers for decades, but I had no idea about the science and dedication that goes into growing this versatile ingredient. See pages 30-33 for more.

Five years ago we opened our store in Stourbridge to better serve customers, colleagues and local communities. To celebrate their anniversary, we visited the store and found out how the team have successfully integrated the store into the community.

Bags of Help and Free Fruit for Kids are hugely popular initiatives with both customers and colleagues, but did you know

they are a part of our wider Little Helps Plan? The plan builds on the progress we have made so

far to make a positive contribution to our customers, colleagues and communities. Look out for it in action throughout this issue. If you have anything to share, drop us a line at [email protected]

MY LIFE IN…

The initial sparkWhen I was about 12 years old, an exciting new TV show called Robot Wars burst on to our screens. Seeing what people could create out of everyday things and being able to compete with them sparked an interest inside me and has driven me ever since.

For Darren Mitchard, Night Shift Service Coordinator at Didcot, tuning in to Robot Wars as a kid sparked a lifelong interest in robotics

Piri-piri is a winner!

To help customers reduce food waste, we removed ‘best before’ dates from around 70 fresh produce lines. Although it’s too early to tell what impact this move has had, many customers have told us they prefer to judge their fruit and vegetables by the look of the product, rather than any date code.

Our school uniform now comes with a 100-day guarantee. Colleagues and their kids put it through its paces

Did you know that more than 100 injuries happen each day across our business? Most are minor, but that’s still too many, so we’ve placed posters around our workplace, helping you take a moment to stop and think about your own safety.

No one should get hurt while working or shopping at Tesco and this poster campaign is just one of a series of initiatives designed to reduce the risks in our business.

Our Chief Executive, Dave Lewis, says: “Over the last three years we’ve made a number of investments to improve the safety of our operations. We’ve

we still have a situation where injuries are happening each day across our business.

“Thankfully, the vast majority of these are minor, but minor injuries can be seen as major injuries that we have only narrowly avoided.

“Please help us to raise awareness by taking responsibility for your own safety as well as others around you.”

WELLBEING

Why Nick Elston, Customer Delivery Driver at Bristol Yate Express, uses his own experiences to support others struggling with their mental health

hroughout my childhood I had severe OCD. The treatment at that

grew up, it left me with recurring anxiety. I would build simple

things up in my head until they completely overwhelmed me. I wore a series of masks that suited the situation I was in, but people rarely ever saw the ‘real’ me.

I was working in a corporate world and one day I left a meeting and my anxieties completely boiled over. I had a nervous breakdown. I’d reached rock-bottom and I knew I had a choice: let my anxieties consume me or let them out.

Perhaps strangely, I decided to start speaking publicly about my issues. The place I felt safest was in the business world, so I began by doing 20-minute talks to colleagues. It was a great form of therapy for me and then I realised it was helping people in my audience too.

Seeing the power of speechI really started to enjoy speaking out about mental health and I began to see the power in it. I did some professional speech training

did about 600 speaking events. I’m so passionate about the power of

talking to each other about our problems that I decided to leave my job and pursue it further.

At about the same time, I saw an advert for a Customer Delivery Driver at my local Tesco store. The hours and the location were perfect. It meant I could drive in the evenings and weekends and pursue my speaking career on the other days.

I started work with Tesco in October last year and I love every minute of it. My colleagues all know what I do and my back story. People come and ask me for support

environment and I never feel judged.

Although the blocks are currently produced by John’s business partner in Kosovo, plans are afoot to build a brand-new site in Ormskirk within the next 18 months, which will allow Smithy to run the entire growing process in Britain.

The popularity boomThe current veganism trend has seen Smithy’s business boom as more people are tempted to try them and experiment

Derek Sarno, Chef Director of our Wicked Kitchen range, is a huge mushroom and Smithy fan. He says: “If you show customers all the amazing things that mushrooms can do, people will want to know how to get their hands on them.

“They can easily mimic meat, using varieties such as king oysters for ‘scallops’ and lion’s mane as ‘steak’.

“We include king oyster mushrooms in our BBQ Mushroom Sourdough Pizza and Naked Burrito, pulled and roasted eryngii in our Hoi Sin Mushroom Wrap, braised oyster mushrooms in our Nana’s Mushroom Bolognese and cluster mushrooms in our Wicked Teriyaki Noodles.

“When treated right and cooked in a delicious way, mushrooms will continue to grow in popularity and this will create increased demand.”

QOne of my customers gave me four large bags of smaller bags that she’d collected from her home deliveries. Could we refund the bag charge if customers return bags for recycling?Antony Jury, Dotcom Driver

A Our bag charge is driven by government legislation and the money made from charges goes to local projects or schemes through our Bags of Help scheme. So far, more than £56 million has been invested in local projects. Home delivery customers can order a bagless delivery and we encourage customers to bring their own recyclable bags into stores when they shop.

QSome fresh products are received in reusable trays in the Distribution Centre. Can we increase the number of products received this way?The team at Livingston DC

A We are always looking for more opportunities to use reusable alternatives to packaging – bread trays and green trays are great examples of this, and we are continuing to look for other products we can deliver in this way.

Could Tesco introduce paper bags instead of plastic bags for fruit and veg?Karol Gyore, Transport Clerk

A We know people feel strongly about this issue and we are currently reviewing alternatives including paper, reusable string bags and home compostables. Paper is heavy and generates more carbon emissions; not many people home compost and we are waiting to see what customers think about reusable string bags before we make a decision. There’s more to be done, but we are making progress.

Do we have a recycling shroud we could put over a cage to encourage customers to recycle plastic packaging in-store?Samantha McPherson, Lead Grocery Manager at Lee Mill

A We have shrouds available in all large-format stores where customers can place carrier bags and packaging for recycling. These are normally located at the store entrance or behind the checkouts.

84 million trays easier to recycle and

also 5% lighter.

As part of our Little Helps Plan, by 2025 we have committed to making all packaging fully recyclable or compostable; ensuring all paper and board used is 100% sustainable and halving packaging weight compared to 2007 levels.

We have big ambitions and we can’t do it all on our own. To achieve our aims, we need to work in partnership with the government and our suppliers to create a ‘closed loop’ system for packaging. This means removing, reducing and redesigning packaging; improving recovery and recycling; and educating our customers to positively change the way they behave towards recycling.
