The Cover
I absolutely adore sunflowers and every year I attempt to grow them,
starting in March. Despite being apparently the easiest of plants to grow,
you have to keep a strict eye on them when they are small and outside, as
the dreaded slug and snail population makes a beeline for them. However,
once they start to become a bit hairy and unpalatable to the beasts, the
plants are usually ok. Helianthus (Sun Flower) follow the movement of
the sun across the sky from east to west once the heads are formed. The
seed oil is rich in minerals such as calcium and iron and is used for
cooking, painting, animal feed and bio-diesel. The sunflower is a fast
growing plant which can grow up to 12 feet plus, depending on the type.
On the head there is a spiral formation of seeds, black or striped, and
these can be used for oil and food for birds, squirrels and humans. This
year has not been the sunniest, but the sunflowers are in the garden and
are wonderful – just a bit more sun please.
If you want to show one of your pictures on the front cover of the BFN, I
would be glad to hear from you. Kris

News from St. Peter’s Church, Bratton Fleming, Summer 2016
We were really happy to take part again in the wonderful Bratton
festival with zip-wiring teddies from the tower and displaying
competition entries. The flower festival contained some wonderful
displays, and we were pleased to be able to display the banner
the school had made in celebration of the Queen’s birthday.
Congratulations to local couples Louise and Ian, James and Katy,
and Richard and Leah married this summer in the church here and
at Challacombe. We are looking forward to the visit of the Bishop
of Crediton, Bishop Sarah, for our confirmation service on 9th
September.
Our Messy Church continues to go very well, enjoyed by many
local families. These are held on the 3rd Sunday of each month at
3.45 – 5.30pm, all welcome. Monday lunches are growing in
popularity, and last month served 15 meals in the Wesley Suite at
the back of church. Welcoming Wednesday is also a great place
to catch up with friends and enjoy cake and refreshments.
I can’t list all that our church does but want to re-iterate that we
are here for you. If you or a family member would appreciate a
friendly visit from someone from our pastoral care team, please let
me know.
The church is open for quiet reflection and prayer every day, and
currently a refugee prayer walk can be found in the church to help
us focus on the needs of these vulnerable people. A rural life
exhibition is to be held in church at the end of October.
We are so grateful for all the support that the church receives from
this community and we look forward to seeing many of you for our
Harvest, Remembrance and Christmas services (and any time
between!). Rev Rosie

Dear Friends
On our return from holiday friends asked us if it went well – the reply
was “perfect!”. Given that we camp and sleep on the ground this might
be stretching the truth ….. ! There is of course no such thing as a perfect
day (despite the song of the same name). Perfection in any part of life is
impossible to attain. Mathematicians talk of a perfect formula and we can
see perfection in symmetry – but it isn't real life, is it? A better example
of how life can be, is represented by the Navajo Amerindian rug with
their complex patterns. There is always an imperfection woven into a
corner. For them it is where “the spirit moves in and out of the rug”.
The pattern appears perfect and yet there is a deliberate mistake.
Perfection is not the elimination of imperfection, rather it is the ability to
co-exist with imperfection. Without getting into a debate over whether a
rug can have a touch of God's spirit or not – it does help us to see that
trying for perfection is at best hopeless and at worst makes us into
“control freaks.” We see imperfection in our lives and that of the world
around us. As a Christian I try to accept my own imperfections and to
have the grace to accept the same in those around me.
For me this is grounded in a trust in God and a hope that despite the
imperfections in my life, God accepts me as I am. I hope we can accept each other in the same way, whether we are people of faith or none.

Penned after the murder of Jo Cox MP: (Sung to the tune of 'The Church's One Foundation'.)
O God of all salvation In this, our darkest hour, Look down at your creation With pity and with power. In all the pain we're seeing, For parent, partner, friend, We'll cling with all our being To love that cannot end. O God, your loving passion Is deeper than our pain, Look down, and in compassion Bring us to life again. When we are found despairing, When all seems lost to sin, We'll hear your voice declaring That love alone will win. O God, when hate grows stronger, With fear to pave its way, The cry, 'Lord, how much longer?' With broken hearts we pray. In all that is dismaying In humankind's freewill, We'll join our voices, praying That love will triumph still. O God, whose love will never Be silenced, stalled or stilled, Set us to work wherever There're bridges to rebuild. We'll take our life's vocation To make, like heav'n above, In this and every nation A kingdom built on love.

RAINFALL The rainfall in Bratton Fleming during the months of May, June and July 2016 together with the averages for those months since 1992 has been as follows: May. 66.00 mm 2.60 ins Average 99.8 mm 3.93 ins June 152.5 mm 6.00 ins Average 94.39 mm 3.71 ins July 71.50 mm 2.82 ins Average 116.84 mm 4.60 ins The variations in rainfall during these particular months since 1992 have been: May varied from 30.23 mm (1.19 ins) in 1998 to 200.0 mm.(7.87ins) in 2006 June varied from 33.02 mm (1.30 ins) in 1992 to 241.8 mm.(9.5 ins) in 2012 July varied from 27.69 mm (1.09 ins) in 1999 to 279.0 mm (10.9 ins) in 2009 Once again we are faced with the fact that our climate is changing, with the rainfall in May and July being considerably less than average whilst June was virtually double. This change makes forecasting long distances impossible but logic tells me to expect a reasonably fine Autumn. This is not a forecast, this is HOPE! It is nice to enjoy a joke with you again! Bratton Fleming Festival 2016 - Beautiful Bratton Competition
Thank you and congratulations to all our entries.
Despite the difficult growing conditions this year (and especially the recent monsoon rains) our judges were really impressed with the entries and the passion, creativity and sheer hard work that was evident in them all. At the end of a very wet morning – and a busy, stimulating and very enjoyable day of judging - all the results were collated and moderated to ensure a consistent standard across all classes. A very big thank you to all our judges and especially to our external Guest Judge Sue Hoyle – a very experienced Britain in Bloom Judge, visiting us all the way from Yorkshire – and to Sue Denham and Linda Martin who judged Class 5 – The Children’s Novelty on the theme of ‘Our Queen’. The only entrant in this year’s competition to achieve the coveted PLATINUM level AWARD was Rosa Williams (aged 7 years) who achieved an astounding 98%. Entrant Class Award Standard

Swifts
I remember, as a boy, lying in bed and looking at the
window to watch swifts diving steeply from their nests in
the roof. As their speed increased they were able to rise
and then fly around catching the insects on which they fed
themselves and their young.
Swifts spend their lives in flight even sleeping on the wing.
They only cease to fly when nesting. If ever a swift is forced
to the ground it is unable to go anywhere. Its legs are
short and its wings are long and it is unable to take off,
without help, if it is forced to the ground.
They fly from Africa to U. K to make use of regular nesting
sites. Here, in Bratton when I came fifty years ago, swifts
nested every year in the Methodist Chapel and the Village
Hall. After the Methodist Chapel was converted to a
dwelling they were no longer able to access nesting sites
in the roof. They continue to nest in the Village Hall and an
attempt was made to provide extra sites. Swift nest boxes
were obtained and fixed on the Village hall and the school.
Sparrows have appreciated these for nesting but swifts
have shown no interest. It is only a small number in the
Village Hall but if you look up when passing there they can
be seen. Hopefully numbers may increase . They are social
and like to form groups and then they can have a
screaming party. I don't know that they regarded the
banner on the hall a welcome but it didn't, drive them
away.
Since Oct.1st 2006 all parishes have a DUTY to look after
its wildlife so I do hope that we shall make these visitors
welcome. Ray Steele. Parish Tree Warden

Did you know the local NHS has a Patient Advice and Complaints
Team?
NHS Northern, Eastern and Western Devon Clinical Commissioning Group (NHS NEW Devon CCG) patient advice and complaints team is a service to provide patients, carers, family members, the public and staff with help, advice and support with concerns or comments relating to NHS services. The team provides free and confidential help to investigate and resolve problems as they happen and aim to do this as quickly as possible. They can also organise in depth investigations of any problems relating to healthcare across a number of different services. Hearing from patients helps us to make improvements and gives us early warnings of system problems. It is very important for the CCG to hear when things are going wrong.

ALLOTMENT NEWS I was lucky enough to acquire an allotment this Spring at Haxton Lane. My
sister and brother-in-law were also very keen so it became a joint
enterprise which was splendid. After clearing and preparing the ground
we planted lots of seeds which mostly grew. There were a lot of raspberry
bushes dotted around so we moved them and made a fruit area. We had
lots of advice from other allotment holders which was immensely useful.
Over the season we have managed to harvest a variety of fruit and
vegetables which was brilliant. As I write this in August there is still a lot
of produce still growing.
The generosity of the allotment holders is also very heart-warming when
they offer their excess produce to avoid wastage. Our main contribution
are some of our cabbages as we planted far too many seeds. We will know
more next year as to what and what not to plant.
It is very interesting and social and it is lovely to chat to all the other
allotment holders as well as the walkers and dog walkers passing by.
The "Beautiful Bratton Competition" included allotments as one of the
categories this year and I entered. I won "silver" which was splendid, but it
was actually third out of three or "last" as the little girl next door called it.
I was very pleased though and the framed certificate was very lovely to
receive.
I think it would be interesting if new or experienced allotment holders
could send in any news, photographs or gardening tips so that we could
learn about or improve our plots over the winter in preparation for next
year. Linda

Garden club notes.
Saturday 28th May was a lovely sunny day for the visit to Atlantic
Botanic Nursery who specialise in coastal plants, design and landscaping. An amazing selection of healthy plants including fruit trees did justice to the enthusiasm and expertise of the young Atlantic Botanic residents. Long may they continue. The Club visit on 25
th June to Little Webbery was a delight. After a
warm welcome by Mr & Mrs Yewdall we were treated to 3 acres of well tended gardens with trees, ponds, roses, vegetables and a riot of flowers before tea and cakes. Our village garden safari took place on a sunny Saturday, 30th July. The first garden was Helen's - ponds, water features, trees, shrubs, pergola, seating areas, you name it ... It was a treasure trove of delights divided into different and separate areas, in a relatively small space, all set off by some wonderful ceramic creations of the owner's making. The second garden was Alan's - 'the Fuchsia Man'. It was packed with hundreds of varieties in every combination of colour, form and hardiness. There were certainly many to admire and fortunately, many were for sale, though it was hard to make a choice with so many varieties all together in one place. Our last visit was to Tina and John's, which included banks of shrubs, extensive lawn and a large gravel garden with many and varied low growing plants and shrubs in pots, all set off by a wonderful view down the valley. They also hosted our afternoon refreshments, tea and cakes served outside on beautifully laid tables. Many thanks to Tina and her neighbours for providing this very pleasant ending to our afternoon. Donations given will go to Sense UK a charity for deafblind children. Saturday 10
th September The Autumn Show, the fiftieth show since
the club was formed in 1998. Thursday 22
nd September the evening talk is ‘Gertrude Jekyll, her
plants and designs’ a presentation by David Usher who spent 18 years as Head Gardener at Hestercombe. Thursday 27
th October the subject is ‘Raising Cacti and Succulents’
by Ralph Northcott from the Mail order Shop ‘The Cactus Shop’. Thursday 24
th November speaker still to be arranged but the
meeting will include Christmassy refreshments. For more details of any of these events contact Lizzie on 710709.

FESTIVAL
Once again, the Festival was a great success. Linda and I would like to
thank Nicky Rock and the Committee for giving us the honour to be
Judges. We both know from past experience the amount of hard work
that goes into organising and running the day takes. It was nice to be on
the other end for a change. It was like old times to see so many

THE SAD PASSING OF COMMON SENSE.
Today we mourn the passing of a beloved old friend, Common Sense, who has been
with us for many years. No one knows for sure how old he was since his birth
records were long ago lost in bureaucratic red tape.
He will be remembered as having cultivated such valuable lessons as knowing when
to come in out of the rain, why the early bird gets the worm, life isn't always fair
and maybe it was my fault.
Common Sense lived by simple, sound financial policies (don't spend more than you
earn) and reliable parenting strategies (adults, not children, are in charge).
His health began to deteriorate rapidly when well intentioned but overbearing
regulations were set in place.
Reports of a six-year-old boy charged with sexual harassment for kissing a
classmate; teens suspended from school for using mouthwash after lunch; and a
teacher fired for reprimanding an unruly student, only worsened his condition.
Common Sense lost ground when parents attacked teachers for doing the job they
themselves failed to do in disciplining their unruly children.
He declined even further when schools were required to get parental consent to
administer Panadol, sun lotion or a sticky plaster to a student; but could not inform
the parents when a student became pregnant and wanted to have an abortion.
Common Sense lost the will to live as the Ten Commandments became contraband
and criminals received better treatment than their victims.
Common Sense took a beating when you couldn't defend yourself from a burglar in
your own home and the burglar could sue you for assault.
Common Sense finally gave up the will to live, after a woman failed to realise that a
steaming cup of coffee was hot. She spilled a little in her lap and was promptly
awarded a huge settlement.
Common Sense was preceded in death by his parents, Truth and Trust, his wife,
Discretion; his daughter Responsibility and his son, Reason. He is survived by three
stepbrothers: I Know My Rights, Someone Else is to Blame and I'm a Victim.
Not many attended his funeral because so few realised he was gone.
If you still remember him pass this on.

Thursday Club Sadly the Thursday Club has lost two of its members in recent months. Joyce Heal and
Peggy Hopkins were stalwart supporters of the Club for many years, Peggy being one of
the founder members of the Club back in 1983. Joyce had not attended recent meetings,
having moved to South Molton, but we were pleased to see her at the December
meeting, when she enjoyed the Carol singing. Peggy survived a serious heart operation
last year and had begun regularly attending meetings again, where her friendliness and
humour were always much appreciated. Our sympathies go to Joyce’s sons, Brian,
Morley and John, and daughters, Margaret and Heather and their families; and to
Peggy’s husband Bryan, sons Grahame and Stephen and their families. Both ladies will
be sorely missed in the Thursday Club.
Thursday 2nd June
A combination of illness, holidays and visiting relatives meant that the group was sadly
depleted when Mr Pat Kingston came to talk about the Devon Air Ambulance Trust. The
people who were there were treated to an excellent and informative presentation about
the history and activities of the pilots, paramedics and back up staff who do such sterling
work in helping people suffering from medical and trauma incidents. They are always
interested to hear from patients and their families when the emergency is over.
Thursday 7th July
The meeting with Claire Joselin and Sky, from Dogs Trust, was very well attended with
numerous guests as well as members being present. Dogs Trust was started in 1891, by
Lady Gertrude Stock and, until 2003, was called the Canine Defence League. In 1967 a
non- destroying policy was adopted and in 1978 the famous statement A Dog is for Life,
not just for Christmas was first used. The Ilfracombe branch opened in 1975 and has
been rebuilt in the last 18 months, with a new layout which incorporates underfloor
heating, glass fronted kennels, shower rooms and a new veterinary room. There are
currently 21 rehoming centres in mainland Britain and Northern Ireland, the average stay
is 4 -6 weeks and 97% of dogs find new homes. Potential owners are thoroughly checked
and can get plenty of support and advice through their dog’s life. Last year Dogs Trust
neutered 56,457 dogs and has neutered 768,528 since its campaign started. It
microchipped 185,544 dogs in 2015 and has done 935,544 since that campaign began. It
is working against puppy farms. The Trust offers help and advice to homeless dog
owners and will take into temporary fostering dogs. 1200 pets have been helped in that
way since 2004. Dogs Trust relies solely on donations and legacies, it has no
government support. Volunteers to walk dogs and fund raise are always welcome.

Thursday 4th August
It was generally agreed that seldom has an hour passed so quickly and with such hilarity
as the one when Marion Ridd-Jones told us about some of the goings on in her 40 years
as a landlady. Some examples:- the delivery of twin beds for one of the guest rooms
prompted rumours around the village that the Ridd-Jones’ marriage was in trouble; the
group of keen fishermen who fished their quotas in the reservoir each day and brought 20
trout back each evening to be gutted and frozen – and the carrier bag of one man’s haul
which was left outside for a short time, only to be “ found ” by the sheepdog, buried and
proudly dug up again several weeks later. These stories and many more kept us all well
entertained. People have said Marion ought to write a book. She really should!

News from the Exmoor Pony Centre, Ashwick, Dulverton TA22 9QE
We have reached a
milestone! The
Exmoor Pony Centre
is 10 years old this
year and we
celebrated our
birthday at Dunster
Country Fair with
champagne and
birthday cakes.
Exmoor pony, Tom,
thoroughly enjoyed
all the attention from the children and behaved beautifully – apart from
trying to eat the candles on the cake!
We were joined by author and Exmoor pony lover, Victoria Eveleigh,
and Devon horse trainer, free-rider and TV presenter, Emma
Massingale. Author Tracey Gemmell is generously donating a percentage
of the proceeds from her new book about an Exmoor pony called
Dunster, Dunster’s Calling, to the Moorland Mousie Trust.
On 27 October we will be celebrating Halloween from 12 to 3pm. There
will be all the usual activities including pony rides (for 4 years and over)
and pony grooming. Entry is free with a small charge for activities.
For competent riders, trekking across the Moor is available most days.
For non-riders or beginners, a taster session in our covered arena offers
the opportunity to groom, saddle and ride an Exmoor pony under skilled
supervision. All must be booked in advance.
The Exmoor Pony Centre is open to visitors between 10:00 and 4:00 on
Sunday, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday throughout the
summer.

Music in Minehead
The Minehead and West Somerset Arts Society
is a small society which aims to bring top quality classical music and performance to our area and which is run as a charity by a handful of people, all of whom are volunteers who love good
music.
We are now entering our 53rd season with four concerts by world-class performers including BSO Strings from the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra and the Dante String Quartet. We begin this
year with:
Friday 7 October, 7.30, Minehead Methodist Church
ENDYMION CLARINET QUINTET playing Schubert, Mozart and
Brahms.
Friday 18 November, 7.30, Minehead Methodist Church
JAMIE WALTON (cello) and DANIEL TONG (piano) playing
Beethoven, Debussy, Janacek, and Shostakovich.
Our concerts are open to all but as a society member you can make fantastic savings on tickets, saving £4 on every ticket purchased before 31 August, so a pair of tickets for each of our four concerts will save you £32! To join costs only £8 single or £12
for a couple and there's a membership form on our website.
Tickets are available only from The Regal Theatre box office in Minehead - in person, by phone at 01643 706430 or at
www.regaltheatre.co.uk.
We also organise coach outings to performances of opera, ballet and music at venues such as Bristol Old Vic, Colston Hall Bristol, Exeter Great Hall and Plymouth . Details of upcoming trips and
booking are all on our website.
