  • Dear Ian, Claire and teamHeartiest congratulations on the

extremely proud of the progress you havemade over the past 30 years. Yourpublication consistently sets a very highstandard in terms of both content andpresentation. More importantly, yourreaders and advertisers think it is great, andtherefore continue to support you. Welldone!

May I wish you continued success forthe next 30 years!

    Warm regards, Brand Pretorius

And From The United States ofAmerica

Dear IanJust finished reading Andrews in-depth

piece on the airbag story. I would like to add a couple things. Not

that he missed anything, but there is a sidestory happening over here thatcompliments his fine work.

    Regards,Jay Dalton, Los Angeles, USA

TAKATA Air Bags... one more thing - adrama alongside this saga worth following.

The practice for the insurancecompanies in America is to use as many"recycled" parts as you can during a repair. After all why should they pay extra for anew boot lid when a used replacement is"as good as the one you had on your usedcar". So there is a roaring trade in recycledairbags.

Why buy new when a recycled un-deployed bag just pops in. Many timesscrapyards will buy vehicles counting onthose good airbags being resold usuallyfor hundreds of dollars. But this time there'sa problem.

Used Takata airbags are now worthless.Except the insurance companies still wantto buy them to finish the repair jobs. Thescrapyards still want to sell them to recoverthe profit they planned on. The car ownersare so blind to the issue that few ever knowthe problem.

The fact is that hundreds maybethousands (?) of used ammonium nitratepowered air bags are being re-installed intorepairs as we speak.

It's not illegal. It's not monitored. Imaginesurviving the first air bag deployment, andnow you have loaded another round in thechamber! And, your vehicle is being recalled, but there are not enough new air bags toget one into your car.

This is not a "what if" case. This ishappening right now in my family with a2013 Mustang. After a small crash we haveno idea of the origin of the replaced air bag.Did it come from a "humid climate"? Ihope not.

Honda was trying to do something. Theysent out guys to the scrapyards and startedbuying up used Honda air bags. They offered$29 a bag and the scrappers screamed thevalue was unfair. Many told Honda to goaway.

So, here is a car company trying to dothe right thing and not allow the used airbags to re-enter the market and get lostoutside of the normal recall system.

Remember that air bags are a Federallymandated safety feature that are illegal todisconnect. And illegal to remove. And theultimate "what if" scenario?

Rental car companies. There are no rulesin place that prevent rental car companiesfrom renting cars with open recalls... or onesthat have been repaired with used air bags...of unknown origin.

    The disgrace continues.

Response from Andrew Marsh:I did not know this story was going on...

However... We have the same problem. People putting together used airbag sets

by getting un-deployed airbag modules fromwrecks. They don't know anything about thehistory that's lost the moment the SRSmodule is removed and not associated witha VIN. They don't know if the airbag shouldhave gone off but didn't (false deployment)or its fine. There is no supporting evidence.

Further. Because SRS has a fair bit ofempirical optimisation, modules and seatbeltpre-tensioners can be re-formulated duringa production run of a given model. Thosemodules are formulated for that model, andso are not often shared with other modelsfrom the same OEM.

So, a 2009 car may used subtly differentmodules compared to the identical modelfrom a year earlier or later only theoriginal build VIN will reveal this.

The used airbag 're-sellers' don't knowthis, and don't care.

Just like the US situation these on-linecompanies are doing a very immoral trade, but are difficult to shut down because thelaw does not define what's wrong about it.

The solution? Stop OEMs charginganywhere between 20 fold and 100 fold thedelivered build price from suppliers to theaftermarket a maximum of five times thebuild price should be enough.

If the aftermarket price is low enough, the on-line business re-selling junk will goaway.

Oh and OEMs would sell far morereplacement airbag and seat belt pre-tensioner modules.

    Regards, Andrew Marsh, UK

New legislature and protocolimplementation is redirecting thesuccess of business. Proactiveinvolvement is unfortunately the

premise of sustainability in the currenteconomic slump.

Success remains buoyant to those whoemploy change in line with demand and theculture of development and provision ofservice must be designed to meet the needsof the potential customer.

The introduction of the consumerprotection act and the treating of customersfairly, brings focus to the most importantaspect of change currently required.Complacency tends to be the order of theday and habits obtained are difficult to leavebehind when employing trends and changesin day-to-day business activity.

When dealing with customers isdisclosure in such a manner so as to leave nodoubt, to make sure clear and transparentinformation is given and ensure they be keptappropriately informed before, during andafter the time of contracting services.

Further no doubt must exist as to theexpectation post repair of service renderedand the expectation must be provided asyou have led your customer to expect.

Understanding is to under promise andover deliver. Common mistakes which arecreating the most common fault at present isthe provision of information using thecorrect word of meaning. As an examplebeing the phrase to be used is estimation ofdamage implying the provision ofquantification of damage which can easily beseen by eye on the unstripped damagerather than a quotation which impliesrepairing the damage at the value containedon the document provided to the customerat a given value.

Other common non-disclosedinformation provided is to ensure theunderstanding of repair time is subject to thesuccessful and completed delivery of sparesrequired to complete the repair. The man inthe street may not be aware of the fact thatyou do not stock the required componenteven though you are displaying the relevant

OEM approval badge in your reception.Another issue here relates to a specific partwhich may be on back order but does notnecessarily leave the vehicle in road usecondition of safety to vehicle or occupants;and can be delivered back to the ownerpending receipt of the part. This part shouldbe shown on the invoice at zero value toconfirm future delivery and be explainedthat a future cost will be attributable onfitment. This information is thus self-explanatory, transparent and leaves nodoubt in the hands of all parties concerned.

The examples of how customer service isapplied correctly within the framework ofthe new directives is not limited to scenariosprovided but should be applied as aprecursor to thinking beyond currentcomfort zones. The future precedents whichwill be set by the introduction of theombudsman will have a significant andalmost negative impact, should you not beable to provide proof of capability, accreditation and most importantlyqualification.

A CHANGE IN THE WAY WE CONDUCT BUSINESS ETHICS

    CRA NEWS

Real Research, an independent marketresearch consultancy recently conductedan anonymous survey on the motor bodyrepairer market requesting feedback on

the three major repair associations, namely CRA,SAASDA and SAMBRA. Justin Swanepoel from RealResearch had this to say: For the past 10 years, repairers have been asking which association will bethe best for their repair business? Real Research isnot affiliated to any of the repair associations so wedecided to conduct this independent survey to besttry to answer this age-old question.

The questionnaire took the form of a series ofeight association statements and requestedrepairers to agree or disagree on the statements ona scale of 1-5. The research methodology used wasa combination of telephone calls and a self-completion web survey and fieldwork ran frommid-June to mid-July. The sample of the survey was1100 repairers and a 30% (330) response rate wasachieved. The breakdown of the final sample wasSAMBRA 190, CRA 78 and SAASDA 62 responseseach.

The results are in and although extremely closein overall scoring, the CRA came out with the bestscore out of 3.17 out of five points, followed bySAASDA with 3.08 and SAMBRA with 2.73.Where the information gets very interesting, iswhen one looks at the individual statements andtheir scores. If one takes the time to look at the barchart of statements it is very clear where eachassociations strengths and weaknesses lie. Isincerely hope this information gets used by theassociations to address any issues that the surveypicked up and by the motor body repairers to makemore informed decisions, Swanepoel said.

  • Telematics is set to become a significant disruptor to theSouth African motor insurance market over the nextdecade and it is very likely to impact pricing methods acrossthe industry.

The technological potential of telematics continues to increase atan astounding rate for OEMs that are able to quickly recognise howtelematics can vastly enhance their traditional product-based valuepropositions. Those that hope to adapt their business/organisationalmodels to deliver against these promises stand to gain competitiveadvantage relative to those that are slower to adapt, including thepotential to materially shift market share even in tired and otherwisemature segments.

For fleet operators, the ability to acquire and process vehicleinformation is crucial in order to make informed decisions. This notonly results in cost savings, optimised driver behaviour and effectiveroute planning but also allows dynamic, life-saving accidentmanagement.

This second annual conference is a follow up on the firstconference that took place in September 2014. Feedback receivedfrom delegates who attended the event last year suggested betterpartnership modes, enabling technologies as well as takes from other

key players in the industry, amongst others. As vehicle telematics systems become universal, progressive, in

step with their fleet management colleagues, will need to turn totelematics data.

This conference is set to provide an opportunity for OEMs to beable to meet the technological demands within their in-housesystems and processes.

  • You could be forgiven for feeling a bit uneasy about theRand value now, with ultra low exchange rates, plus agovernment that seems so busy with their point-of-orderparliamentary procedure that they havent the time or the

moral fortitude to deal with it. On a wider global front, Chinas currency devaluation signalled a

sort of end-game in the new money printing phenomena asquantitive easing saw equity markets left free to collapse under theweight of impossible expectations. Now time appears to be runningout from China to Brazil, and South Africa, as central bankers havelost control and all this as the global economy grinds to a halt.

In 2009 Chinas impetus as a global great saviour of the worldeconomy launched an unprecedented stimulus package that drovethe commodities industry to new heights, ostensibly to help resourcerich emerging markets like us to go forward. But with all the ponzischemers in place it now seems to have hit a brick wall with growthbelow 7% and an economy weaker than expected. The results, sayanalysts, is that of the 22 trackable commodities are now running atlower price levels than that of 15 years ago, as well as oil hovering atless than $50 a barrel, plus iron ore prices also falling at an alarmingrate from $140 a ton to around $56 per ton, where, incidentally, billions were raised to fund new mines and oil fields. These projectsare now mostly making losses, squeezing their junk bond issues to seethem watch on as bonds tumbled and panic grips capital markets.

All this leads the Bric countries of Brazil, Russia, China and SouthAfrica, to whom the West was supposed to pass the torch of worldgrowth, in varying states of economic disarray.

Set against this is the UK stock market which is riding through its77th month of aggressive bull-upmarket since March 2009, thelongest rising market since the great depression of 1929.

This disconnect with reality is mind boggling. I mean whenMicrosoft has more value than some European nations, the world hasgone nuts. This set against a mountain of debt from the US of some22,5 trillion Dollars including its invisible trading debt and Greecewith its unpayable 600 billion Euros now in place It really leaves thenext generation with a debt burden to repay which is totallyunrealistic and unsustainable. Just think for a minute about the SouthAfrican implications as the Rand falls as part of the fragile fivecountries of Turkey, Indonesia, Brazil and India who are all reelingfrom speculative currency rigging. We are all on a highway to financialhell.

The spectacle of international banks like Barclays, Goldman Sachs,RBS, HSBC, Paribas, Tokyo-Mitsubishi, RBC Capitol Markets, SocietyGeneral, Standard Chartered, Deutsche Bank, Credit Suisse and JPMorgan who have already paid over nine billion dollars in fines forscams in rigging world currency cross over rates is the biggest kick in

the rear ever for emerging economies. The money should bereturned to us and not paid to some nameless regulator for we arein the frontline with a 30% drop in the exchange rate to fund bothhyper inflation and more stagnation as the economy splutters to ahalt with all this fraud in motion.

Apart from that our politicians who dont seem to do much in theway of maths and who now spend more on blue light patrols tosafely usher them to their next vital meeting than they spend onprotecting our borders, seem to think things are going great? Butmaybe not for too long? For your body shop will become a front linespender in keeping up with double-digit inflation.

When viewed against profit margins from insurance repairs itlooks like the fight for business survival against all this currency ratefixing wars and fraud will be to try to sleep with one eye open interms of long term survival. Things are getting tougher on all fronts.

  • Pushing a business to optimise body shop production hasbecome a major path forwards in the chase for ever-increasing production output and the demand for improvedprofitability. There is the need for constant training and

introduction of reliable step-by-step machine and working tooltechnology to get the right consumables used for the correct ratio ofproduction output for long term success. Dust free applications areone of these options for collision repair and come in many shapesand sizes.

Festool, from Germany, are one company who have concentratedon day-to-day workflow. They have focused on the basics of how toachieve better throughput with your current number of professionalsemployed in the body shop. By working in a flawless manner, the riskof reworks is eliminated and doing work twice and suffering theconsequential loss can be eliminated by achieving perfect surfacequality.

The Festool offer starts with a full three-year warranty on all theirproducts. The Rotex range of power-tools is designed to be threetools in one having a very high rate of stock removal for coarsesanding. Its adjustable for use in dry ultra fine sanding and polishingas well. The super range for spot repair come with different orbital sizesfor coarse sanding or fine surface preparation using their own Granatpremium abrasive which is claimed to be 30% faster and also clogsless by some 20%. This all adds up to an extended time in use whenused with the Fusion-Tec sanding back-up pads that have a patentedmulti-jet stream where dust is quickly transported from the surface.

A large range of mobile health friendly work stations are in theFestool line-up and they are able to filter out hazardous aluminium, polyester and various other toxic materials. These electric systems

are very helpful for body shops who have reached their compressedair ceiling. In the range are compressed air models for flexibility inproduction needs. These too remove flammable dust.

    TOP SHOP, LYNNWOOD, PRETORIA

This state-of-the-art new Porsche repair centre is the resultof an intensive 24-month long project on design andbuild-up for the all-new sales and service centre inLynwood Pretoria. The Porsche team say it is part of a

company objective to get a bigger footprint in South Africas majorbusiness centres. The shop has only been in operation for twomonths and consequently is in the ramp-up phase ofcommissioning.

The design was recently the subject of a Porsche Germanyinspection for work quality output and overall presentation of anybody shop in the world. It won top place and thats easy tounderstand when you look at the routing and shop layout.

With ample outside parking the 180 000 square metreworkshop has all the specified equipment that the Porsche brandrequires. Not least of these is the placement of two SAIMA ThesisSpray Cabins that are built to optimise waterborne refinishsystems. These have innovative Endo-Thermic panels and requireburner, heat exchangers or extraction smoke racks and operatewith electrical power for a fraction of the cost of diesel power. Infact the expense on their installation will be amortised in just eightmonths for what it would have cost them using diesel heating asan alternative.

The refinish system of choice is PPG and is housed in a uniquemixing room that features special north light colour matchingcapabilities. The booths were installed, says Heinz Brgger of theMarouns Group, with a pair of low level Jollift lifts to enablevehicles in the spray booths to be lifted to an easy working heightfor lower body parts being resprayed. This, plus a 20 000 lux lightlevel and a specified level of 33 000 cubic metres of air exchangeper hour, sees almost no overspray being seen during repair.

Body shop tools include the latest inverter welder and a Celettebench with a full sets of jigs that Porsche recommend for accuraterepair. When it comes to the preparation area a unique six-lanearea was designed where a special baffled floor extraction packageis coupled to a large Hammach 8000 Dust Free Vacuum system. This also eliminates any primer overspray.

Dust and dry flatting contamination in the workshop area arein good shape in order to get the new repair centre up to itsenvisaged 200 per month completed repair jobs, says MarceCabula, the body shop manager in Lynwood.

Because the production plan has been so well conceived andimplemented, this futuristic facility looks bound to become a bigsuccess and profit earner for the Porsche Group going forwards.

The feel of the 500X drive thanks to rear MacPhersonsuspension and smooth fast gear changes comes across as a robustpackage. For the size of engine derivatives on offer and its SUV typesize I was quite impressed with the performance. It definitely exudesX-factor looks thanks to the large oval headlight eyes and ratheraggressive firm footed stance. The 500X comes equipped with a"Drive Mood Selector", which tightens up or smooths out engine, brakes, steering and transmission, depending on the driving stylemost appropriate to your situation or road surface conditions.Auto is for the best in terms of comfort, consumption, Sport for adrive that favors performance, and All Weather maximises

This can all be managed directly using the steering wheelcontrols in order that the driver doesnt need to look away fromthe road or take their hands off the wheel.

You can get your hands on this compact outside, but welcominginside drive, starting from R344 900. not at all a bad price whenyou consider how much bang you getting for your buck with whatthe 500X has to offer.

  • Insurance programmes that encourageless and safer driving are growing inpopularity across the country. Thecollision repair industry seems

unaffected so far, but industry leaders arecarefully monitoring the trend. Saving cashand the environment are top priorities formany consumers these days. In response, insurance companies in recent years haverolled out programmes offering cheaperpremiums for less time behind the wheel.

Pay-as-you-drive (PAYD) insuranceprogrammes, which base premiums onmileage, driving habits or both, are availablefrom numerous insurance companies inmore than half the country, and theyregaining momentum. The shift couldeventually result in lower carbon emissions, reduced oil consumption, less congestionand, because of the potentially lower cost, more insured drivers. It could also meanfewer accidents which might produce lesswork for collision repairers.

A Brookings Institution report from 2008estimated that the US could save at least$34 billion annually if all motorists used aPAYD plan. The report attributes theaccident reduction to an eight percent dropin driving. US motorists currently drive threetrillion miles per year.

Merle Scheiber, director of insurance inSouth Dakota, one of 35 states that allowssome form of PAYD programme, suspects a

key factor driving insurance companies tothe plans is the potential for reduced claims.

Insurance companies are always lookingfor ways to reduce claim frequency,Scheiber says. They are there to pay claims, but they dont want to pay claims. Still, evenif the plans become the standard, Scheiberdoesnt see a significant impact on thecollision industry. Thats been the case so far,but the Automotive Service Association(ASA) is monitoring the trend for any effectit might have on repairers, says ASAspokeswoman Angie Wilson.

Its something theyre keeping their eyeson, but it hasnt escalated to an agenda item, she says. Most PAYD programmes requirecustomers to install a wireless device thatplugs into their vehicles onboard computerthrough a diagnostic port. That devicemonitors mileage and driving habits and canbe removed easily by a repairer withoutaffecting the data.

The only thing collision shops wouldneed to know about the device is that if theyneed to use the port the device is pluggedinto to do diagnostic work, they can simplyremove the device to do the diagnostics andthen plug the device back in when theyredone, says Brittany Senary, a spokeswomanfor Progressive. Progressive was one of theearliest companies to offer this system. ItsSnapshot programme tracks the number ofmiles driven, time of day they were driven

and the frequency of sudden stops. Peoplewho drive less, go out at safer times of dayand make fewer sudden stops could get adiscount.

More than 100 000 Progressivecustomers across 29 states have signed upfor the programme, Senary says. Thats oneout of every four Progressive customers. Shesays the programme doesnt change howProgressive works with or reimbursesrepairers.

Other major insurance companies, including State Farm and GMAC, offer someform of PAYD programme. An independentcompany in Texas called MileMeter InsuranceCo. became the first in the nation to offerpay-by-the-mile insurance back in 2004.Unlike other programmes, MileMeterrequires customers to send photos ofodometer readings rather than install atracking device.

Michael Barry, a spokesman for theInsurance Information Institute, says anotherissue potentially holding PAYD programmesback is privacy. Motorists need to be willingto let insurance companies essentially get inthe car with them when a tracking device isinvolved.

But, as the need for green in the formof cash and environmental conservation grows, the practice is becoming moreaccepted.

  • When Mark Hall decided to exit the collision repairindustry last spring after 29 years in the business, hecontacted two large companies to see if theyd beinterested in taking over his two Illinois-based Carstar

shops. Today, those shops operate under the Sterling Autobody andCollision Revision umbrellas. Hall had interest from independentshop owners, but chose to go with the big guys for one simplereason: financial security.

If I were doing a cash sale I wouldnt care who I sold to, butbecause of the size of the operations its difficult to get financing, hesays. In both cases I was going to be involved in the real estate, andI wanted buyers that I trusted to make enough money to pay me forthe real estate. And the people I trust to do that are big multishopoperators (MSOs).

Hall had reason to be wary: five years earlier, hed sold one ofthose shops to an individual who ended up, in Halls words, in overhis head. The new operator couldnt pay the rent, so Hall ended upsoliciting other potential operators.

I know there are lots of great independent collision repairshops, he says, but I also know the power of large operators in theindustry. Indeed, some large operators appear to be getting evenbigger these days: During the past few years some of the collisionrepair industrys biggest operators have been growing in part byacquiring other shops.

ABRA Auto Body & Glass, one of the largest collision repaircompanies with 98 locations, says on its website that plans foraccelerated national growth over the next several years includeacquiring existing facilities and building new locations. CollisionRevision Inc., which operates 27 locations in three states, has grownsolely though acquisition since 2007. So whats driving the trend? Atough economy and pressures to be efficient both seem to befactors.

For collision repair shops with the capital to expand, the currenteconomic conditions allow for the reasonable purchase ofindependent facilities, says Denise Caspersen, Collision divisionmanager of ASA. Brandon Thomas, vice president, acquisitions andsystem improvements for Collision Revision, agrees. Their previousretirement strategy is no longer as viable for independent shopowners. They may be underwater on their mortgage, or seeing sucha decline in sales that its reduced their profit. Consolidation givesthem an exit strategy.

Bickett Erick, CEO of Fix Auto USA, which owns and licencesshops, witnessed the consolidation trend crash and burn in the mid-1990s. Now, hes watching it come back again, driven, he says, bypressure on insurance companies to cut costs and be as efficient aspossible. That trickles down to the suppliers and the body shops,Erick says.

Insurance companies are looking to lower the expense of gettingcars repaired and administrating the claims. They would rather dealwith one point of contact that can service 100 body shops. Thesingle-location, well-run operation is more expensive for insurancecompanies to do business with.

For large companies, of course, the revival of the consolidationtrend is a boon. Consolidation gives us an opportunity to growinorganically during a time that normally would not be veryconducive to growth, says Thomas, who expects the consolidationtrend to continue.

It makes more sense to acquire rather than to put a brand newfacility into a market that already has eight or 10 shops. And on theshop-owner side, youve got an aging demographic of shop ownerswho are working longer hours for less money. If theres a way tomake an exit, theyre more apt to listen.

  • The Paint Pro Renovate and Refine system was launchedback in 2012. It was a two-stage system that could beused by both experienced machine polishers and even bythe complete novice.

Since its launch the company has received feedback that whilstthe products did achieve an excellent deep gloss finish and werevery safe to use, customers felt it would benefit from being quickerand slightly more abrasive. The marketplace is evolving and speedis key.

Initially Autoglym believed such a product would become thethird product in the range that would be offered as an alternativeto Renovate and would still be followed by Refine. However, theAutoglym R&D team have over the three-year developmentperiod been able to develop a new product that not only worksquicker than Paint Pro Renovate but one that achieves a finishsuperior to Paint Pro Refine.

Autoglyms all-new Rapid Renovator is a genuine one stepcompound for all colours and paint types, the complete machinepolishing solution. It has been developed to quickly removeflattening marks from freshly cured paint and to remove paintworkdefects, swirl marks, water marks and surface scratches in old fullycured paintwork, leaving an outstanding gloss finish.

It is capable of removing the same defects as Paint ProRenovate and Refine, but performs quicker with one compoundrather than two stages. All of the testing in the UK and abroad hasshown that new Rapid Renovator outperforms Paint Pro Renovateand Paint Pro Refine. Consequently the Paint Pro system will bediscontinued and replaced by Rapid Renovator.

Not only is Rapid Renovator a quicker genuine one-stopproduct for the industry, taking half the time, it is also moreefficient. On average you require less than half as much compoundto achieve the same finish, with Paint Pro Renovate and Refine testsshow on average that to rectify half a bonnet a total of 27.11 gramsof compound is required (21. 45 grams of Renovate and 5.71grams of Refine). In comparison when using Rapid Renovator only11. 44 grams of compound is required.

Rapid Renovator will launch in the UK any day soon andprogressively to the rest of the world giving distributors time todemonstrate the benefits of Autoglyms all new Rapid Renovator.

Despite the economy being a bit shaky at the moment themotor industry still keeps its head above water. It hasbeen like a train throughout the years. Perhaps not quitegoing at full speed at the moment, but it is still going.

From a consumer point of view this is the time to buy a car ortrade in. You have more than 2000 cars to choose from. To keep upthe numbers many worthwhile deals are available.

So far the market this year has been down 2%. Some insiders saythat a lot of cars declared as sales are in fact being registered withouta retail sale being concluded.

The Isuzu KB bakkie is still one of the most reliable vehicles on ourroads. Down in the Eastern Cape Ryno Jonker has just completed720 000km in his KB250 bakkie he bought 11 years ago. This is a1995 model that has only really had normal servicing and oil changing. It travels between 1000 and 1300 km per week. He has also gotanother two Isuzu bakkies with 550 000 and 430 000 km on theclock.

Cayenne Motorcycles out at Kyalami have just completed a Hondamonth long festival with amazing prices being given on theirmotorcycles. In fact some models were sold out. August was Apriliamonth which are superbly finished performance motorcycles fromItaly. 300+ motorcycles have been the norm sold by Cayenne overthe last few months.

Never mind the Jaguar Simola Hill Climb which is one of THEevents on the South African Motorsport Calendar. Jaguar and the F-Type which is South Africas most popular sports car out-selling two-seater competitors from Germany, Italy and Japan. Now they havelaunched a new F-Type R coupe all-wheel drive.

Nearly 600 F-Types have been sold since the launch in 2013 up tothe end of June 2015. One hundred alone were sold in the first sixmonths of this year. The F-Type has been given many titles, includingCar of the Year, Coup of the Year, Convertible of the Year,

Carrying thisnumber of people is all done in total luxury with individual estate-likeseats for the front four passengers. It goes up against the VWCaravelle and the new luxurious V-Class Mercedes-Benz. Its oneadvantage is its price which starts at R500 000.

Bridgestone, the worlds biggest tyre and rubber manufacturer, arewarning people to use the correct speed rating of tyre on theirvehicles. The National speed limit is 120 km/h but many cars arecapable of 250 km/h or more.

Sometimes, says the GM for Field Engineering and TechnicalServices, Hiroshi Nakamishi, motorists fit tyres for a lower speedrating to save money which is false economy and could compromisesafety. A car with a maximum speed of 190 km/h needs a T ratedtyre (its on the sidewall). A Q rating is for continuous speed of 160km/h.

To ensure drivers dont have to drive themselves home afterdrinking during a night-out, the AA has announced the launch of theirlatest service called Designated Driver.

Motor vehicle crashes claim the lives of more than 14 000 peopleevery year and as many as 150 000 injured. A lot of these accidents, maybe more than half, are caused by alcohol consumption.

With poor transport facilities, drivers may be tempted to drivehome after drinking, even if they know they shouldnt and if caught, get heavy penalties. So the AA has employed drivers with a cleandriving licence and older than 25. There are male and female drivers;the latter to give added peace of mind for women users. All youneed is to book the service 45 minutes before you need a lift home.Drinking and driving is just not worth the risk. For details visit www.aadesignateddriver. co. za

This is just not so asthe law has not been promulgated and cannot be enforced beforethis is done. The rules say it will be published in the GovernmentGazette. Where do you get a Government Gazette and who everreads it, anyway?

The AA stands by its earlier comments that ring fencing the fuellevy is still the best funding model for e-tolls as the cost of collectionis a fraction of what they are trying to impose now.

He had never seen the GP circuit before but after tworaces he scored two wins and had the two quickest laps.

The first 29 Hungarian Grands Prix provided a long, boringafternoon with a procession of drivers unable to pass. 2015changed all that and put on a show thats been one of the best fora couple of years. Sad to record the deaths of three great people who had a greatpassion for motorsport. The first was Peter de Klerk who died at80 years old. He was a humble, genuine bloke with a natural talent. He became one of the fastest Porsche drivers at Le Mans who wasable to sort out any handling or performance problems. His earlydays were in Alfa Romeo cars in South Africa. Overseas GP F1drivers were shattered by the speed of the man.

The next shock was the passing of Clive Rice, who besides beingone great South African cricket captain, loved his motorsport andwas successful. A car enthusiast, he actually had an AC Cobra madeby Tony Martin in Durban. He was motor racing at Zwartkops notlong before he died.

Dave McLeod was another shock. After a bout of pneumoniahe suffered a heart attack. One of Kyalamis great commentators onthe original circuit, he was secretary of the South AfricanCommentators Association. All will be genuinely missed. Ourcondolences to their families.

South African ladies made motorsport history during an all-girlkarting podium, thought to be a world first, made internationalracing history at a Northern Regions Karting Championshipmeeting. The Rotax Senior Max Class saw Fabienne Lanz, IvanaTinich and Shannon Jackson come home 1-2-3.

They were goingfull tilt in blinding rain and mist right on the edge of big drop-offs.A 42 km stage through the Longmore Forest which happened tobe the last one as the final two stages were flooded out, was wonby Leeroy Poulter by .7 of a second from Cronje.

Be warned. Organised crime syndicates are targeting luxurycars. Its not just the small cars in the Volkswagen range or Toyotasthese days; they are looking at everything. Some of the victimshave been people who have filed complaints directly withdealerships. The Greek OpportunityHoning in on the domestic market, AkzoNobels sales manager

VR premium for Greece, Italy, Balkans and Turkey, Yannis Ioanniadisclaimed there is opportunity within the Greek sector.

Facing continued economic and political difficulties, Yannishighlighted how vehicle sales had declined, reaching an all-time low in2013. Yannis explained how between 2008-2012 car sales droppedan average of 35% per year which meant a great downsizing of manybusinesses. He also highlighted how since 2013 the fleet sector hasshown signs of growth, an area he described as now very importantfor the automotive industry.

Yannis suggested that even though sales effectively disappearedup until 2012/13, we expect this to grow once again and feel theeconomy can grow really fast again, if the situation stabilises, whichmeans we can go back to our position we held until 2007.

Yannis explained how during the same period insurers, whichhave a heavy reliance on motor premiums, have been under greatpressure to reduce costs with premiums reducing by 13%, yet claimsremaining static. Yannis continued: This caused a really big squeezeon the profitability of insurers and as a consequence we have seen abig drop in the number of insurers in Greece, from 41 in 2009 to 31in 2013.

Despite a new entrant to the insurance market in 2014 and earlyindications of a stages recovery, the decline in the Greek economyhas resulted in insurers placing mounting pressure on the supplychain with a reduction in original equipment manufacturer (OE)parts sales, an increase in the use of non-OE parts and reducedlabour rates.
