VEHICLE, ACTION!

AA Singapore ended 2015 on a high note together with its members at the Wheels, Reels and Carnival, jointly organised with Liberty Insurance. The “Wheels” element

The Heritage Drive that showcased local history was the highlight of AA Singapore’s Wheels, Reels and Carnival 2015.

comprised a drive to locations of significant historical interest, the “Reels” segment featured a drive-in showing of Home, and the “Carnival” was a fun-filled family affair at Leisure Park Kallang.

The Heritage Drive proved to be the highlight of the weekend’s programme. An event first held in the 1990s, the 2015 edition saw over 70 cars driving to six historically significant checkpoints around

Singapore, including Changi Museum, Old Ford Factory and Sun Yat Sen Memorial Hall. At each pit stop, participants engaged in games like the traditional chapteh, and quizzes based on exhibits at the museums to chalk up points.

Before the start of the event, Mr Low Beng Tin, AA Singapore Deputy President emphasised that speeding was discouraged.

He said: “It’s not about racing or speed.” Beating the clock wasn’t the only concern drivers should have, he reminded. Participants have to stay safe on the road and be courteous to other road users.

AA Singapore President, Mr Bernard Tay, reiterated the message at the end of the Heritage Drive, and said that he hoped participants not only learned about

Mr Jeremy Lee, who participated in the event twice before, was the eventual winner. He attributed his good fortune to his daughter, who had accompanied him on the drive. “We just wanted to enjoy ourselves. I didn’t set out

Family fun and all things motoring were on display at the Carnival.

Leisure Park Kallang was a hive of activity on 19 and 20 December. There was something for everyone, and the display of over 40 vintage cars and motorcycles was a huge draw, reflecting the carnival’s theme of “Discovering Singapore’s Motoring Heritage”.

WOR DS H U BER T TA N G Two “stars” from the

007 Bond movies were especially eye-catching – a Lotus Esprit from The Spy Who Loved Me, and a Citroen 2CV from For Your Eyes Only. Both had been driven by Roger Moore as James Bond, and provided attendees with the thrill of getting up close with them.

At the Children’s Road Safety Circuit, kids in pedal cars concentrated on traffic tasks under the watch of the Singapore Police Force. Meanwhile, fathers

were busy checking out big boys’ toys at the Bosch accessories booth, and mums lined up for free health screenings offered by SATA. The Singapore Optometrist Association was on hand to offer free eye checks, while partners Liberty Insurance, Ranger and BlackVue offered discounts on products and services. AA Singapore provided free car evaluations in a showcase of its services, and its Autoventure driving holidays were also on display. An exhibition highlighting Singapore’s motoring history was a poignant inclusion. A storyboard wall marked AA Singapore’s journey through the years, and

Even for those who didn’t manage to snag a prize, their smiles said it all, proving that participating in fun challenges, especially when it’s with close friends or family, is the biggest prize of all.

Mr Bernard Tay, AA Singapore President, said: “AA Singapore celebrates our 108th anniversary with this fun and community-engaging Wheels, Reels and Carnival 2015. The event was planned for Singaporeans to wrap up the SG50 year with their family and friends in a fun and meaningful way, and as a means of reflecting on our past journey while celebrating our achievements as a nation.”

The day wrapped up with a lucky draw where many prizes were won. AA Singapore would like to thank all sponsors and partners involved for their generous support.

RENAULT RETURNS TO FORMULA 1 The French are back on the track. Renault looks set to return to the marquee Formula 1 series by managing and

competing in its own team starting this year.

“Renault had two options: to come back at 100% or leave. After

a detailed study, I have decided that Renault will be in Formula 1, starting 2016. The final details supplied by F1’s main stakeholders gave us the confidence to accept this new challenge. Our ambition is to win – even if it will take some time,” said Mr Carlos Ghosn, Chairman and CEO, Renault.

Renault has been involved in Formula 1 for almost 40 years without interruption. In 1977, it revolutionised

the championship with the introduction of turbocharging, a technique that soon became the norm in the sport. Renault has since taken part in more than 600 Grands Prix, claiming 168 race wins, 12 Constructors’ titles and 11 Drivers’ crowns. Returning to F1 allows Renault to build bridges between the advanced technologies seen in the world championship and its road cars, particularly in the fields of electric and hybrid vehicles.

PRECARIOUS STREETS

Each year, nearly 1.3 million people die on the world’s roads as a result of road traffic collisions. This accounts for more than 3,000 deaths each day and up to 50 million people are seriously injured in road traffic accidents worldwide, with many disabled for life. More than half of these victims were not travelling in a car. Half of those killed are vulnerable users such as pedestrians, cyclists and other road users.

More than 500 children are killed on the world’s roads every day. This sobering fact led renowned film director Luc Besson and the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA)to come together to produce the film Save Kids Lives. The film sends a potent visual message, highlighting the dangers on roads

If we’re not careful, the roads can be a lethal environment for both drivers and pedestrians alike. Don’t wait until it’s too late, pledge to be a safer road user today.

around the world. It was released in support of the #SaveKidsLives campaign, a call for action to stop the growing number of road deaths worldwide. Watch the film at savekidslives2015.org.

In Singapore, the number of total road accident casualties, including road injuries, have been on the rise, despite seeing a decrease in the trend for fatal accidents. Road safety is a shared responsibility and more can be done to instil good road sense into all road users.

AA Singapore is an affiliate of FIA’s extensive network of automobile associations and is proud to participate in safety campaigns in support of the UN Decade of Action for Road Safety 2011–2020. This movement aims to save 5 million lives and reduce road-related injuries by 50 million worldwide over 10 years, from 2011 to 2020.

AA Singapore has been actively participating in the campaign by encouraging the public to sign on #SaveKidsLives pledge walls at many of its events, including

the recent Wheels, Reels and Carnival 2015. AA Members and the participants of the Asia Pacific Road Safety and Mobility Conference and Singapore Road Safety Month have also pledged their commitment towards safer motoring.

We cannot be complacent in promoting road safety. By observing the 10 Golden Rules for Safer Motoring and encouraging the public to pen their signatures for this good cause, we hope to raise consciousness among the public and make a difference to all road users.

world’s roads and help us spread the message that this tragedy anbepre ented

Taking the lead in road safety, AA Singapore has also been promoting road safety awareness through the distribution of car decals that read “Always Belt-up Children”, and organising road safety quizzes on social media platforms such as Facebook and the AA Connections e-newsletter.

Besides drivers, motorcyclists, cyclists and pedestrians also need to recognise that they, too, have a part to play in keeping the

roads safe. Pedestrians are a vulnerable group of road users. In a traffic accident, they are more likely to sustain serious or fatal injuries than drivers. Risky behaviour from pedestrians can put drivers in peril as they may not be able to stop their vehicle quickly in an emergency. One common cause of accidents is jaywalking, which many pedestrians, despite knowing its potential dangers, choose to do.

Everyone needs to be alert on the roads. Practising good road

safety habits is a shared responsibility in ensuring better roads for all.

GLASSES NO MORE

IS LASIK SUITABLE FOR EVERYONE?Cornea thickness is the main factor that determines if a patient is suitable for a LASIK procedure. Performing LASIK on patients with irregular or thin corneas may cause compromised results. If a patient has large pupils, LASIK may result in debilitating symptoms such as glare, haloes and ghost images.

It is recommended that you have a complete eye examination to find out if your eyes are generally healthy before you proceed for LASIK. Patients with severely dry eyes, corneal diseases, immunodeficiency and autoimmune diseases are not suited for LASIK.

IS THERE A LIMITED RANGE OF REFRACTIVE POWER FOR THE LASIK PROCEDURE?For patients with high refractive prescription, cornea thickness remains the key factor. This is most important as the LASIK procedure uses laser to remove cells according to each individual’s unique prescription. With a higher prescription, more correction is required. This is when removal of more tissue would be necessary for

optimum correction. Note that treatment for patients with high refractive power may be associated with less predictable results and an increased risk in vision complications.

WILL I STILL NEED GLASSES IN THE FUTURE AFTER LASIK?Currently, LASIK advancements have achieved an exceptionally high success rate in achieving 6/6 vision, greatly reducing

LASIK complication, but there are exceptions. Complications may include the possibility of over-correction or under-correction, regression of refractive error, dry eyes, damage to the cornea and infection. Vision for driving at night may also be affected by glare, haloes and ghost images.

Before deciding if LASIK surgery is right for you, patients need to be aware of potential risks and complications and weigh these carefully. Talk to your eyecare practitioner about your concerns. From there, they can better access your suitability and explain how the surgery might benefit you and help put the risks in perspective.

V I S I O N

the dependency on spectacles and contact lenses. However, the improvement in vision may vary among individuals, depending on the severity of myopia.

A high refractive prescription may pose a less predictive and satisfactory outcome with some residual refractive error post-LASIK. Regression of refractive error is also possible years after LASIK, but this is not commonly seen.

In such cases, patients may require enhancement procedures or opt for glasses or contact lenses to correct vision.

WHAT ARE THE RISKS ASSOCIATED WITH LASIK?The majority of people may never have a

PARKING WOESROAD RULES

Knowing the ins and outs of streetside parking can keep you on the right side of the law.

The temptation is all too great. Faced with increasing

parking charges and a lack of public parking spots, you settle for a space on the side of the road. But illegal streetside parking is a serious offence, and we all know that traffic fines can only go one way – up.

Parking your car illegally by the road usually results in a fine of $70, and up to $110 if you are a repeat offender.

It’s worse if you park

“in a position that is likely to cause danger to other road users”. This will incur a whopping $300 fine, or $450 for repeat offenders. Repeat offenders are those who have received in the mail a Notice of Traffic Offence (NTO) about parking illegally within the last 12 months from the date of the latest offence.

Understanding what the authorities mean by the word “park” could make all the difference.

According to the Road Traffic Act,

parking means that you’ve brought your motor vehicle “to a stationary position ... to wait for any purpose other than that of immediately taking up or setting down persons, goods or luggage”.

So drivers need not get out and leave the car by the road – just sitting in their cars waiting without moving may be deemed parking. Knowing this can save you from being hit with a traffic violation fine.

CYCLIST ALERTWatching out for people on bicycles is an increasing concern among drivers.

Anyone travelling along our roads can see that bicycling has

surged in popularity. Not only are there more motorised bicycles plying the roads, sport cycling is also trending on a steep incline.

What this means for drivers is that they need to be more careful on the roads. The main thing to bear in mind is that the roads are to be shared by all manner of vehicles.

Still, having to drive alongside cyclists, particularly those in thousand-dollar bikes behaving like they’re at the Tour de France, can be a trick-and-a-half.

slowly so as not to surprise the cyclists.

WATCH THE LEFT TURNBe extra careful when you pass a cyclist and need to make a left turn. Bicyclists often ride faster than you think and could reach your car before you negotiate the turn. If they do, it’s probably better to let them pass before you proceed.

OPEN DOOR POLICYWhen you’re stopped by the road and need to get out of the car, be watchful of cyclists approaching. They often try to squeeze between your car and

the kerb to get by. Yes, you can argue that the cyclists should watch out for you, but caution goes both ways in avoiding altercations.

BEATING LIGHTSWe all know that cyclists need to obey the same rules as car drivers, but just like there are errant drivers, there are irresponsible cyclists. There are some cyclists who will run red lights. Be extra alert when you go through traffic junctions, particularly when a cyclist is approaching. Expect the unexpected and you’ll save yourself a lot of heartache, if not a life, in the process.

SAFETY MATTERS

These two-wheelers move soundlessly, sometimes weave through traffic stopped at lights, and take up just enough space on a lane that sometimes makes it dangerous for drivers to go past.

Here are a few tips regarding cyclists that drivers should keep in mind to help keep the roads safe for everyone.

1.5M MATTERSYou’ve seen this sign before. What it means is to keep at least 1.5m of space between your car and the bicycle when side-by-side. Drivers should also pass smoothly and

TECH TIPS

Every now and then you’ll want to give your car a new coat of paint, perhaps because of an accident, or you might have had a change of

heart. Not all paint jobs are equal, and you don’t know what happens behind closed doors once you hand your keys over. It’s worth your while, and money, to take heed of the following tips.

Things to keep in mind when getting your car painted.

COLOUR MATCHING MAY BE CHALLENGING WHEN YOU

NEED TO REPAINT A PART OF YOUR CAR.

3COLOUR MATCHINGThis is particularly

important if you’re not getting the whole car

painted. Most cars come

with colour codes of the exact colour. These days,

most paint shops just enter the code and voila,

they’re able to obtain the exact shade. But the

paint on your car may have faded over time, and the newly painted portion may not match the older parts. A good

paint shop will be able to compensate by altering the hue of the paint, or painting specific areas

within the seams to minimise the difference.

PROPER MASKINGParts of the car that you

don’t want paint on must be protected with masking tape. Observe the shop’s process to determine if you’re comfortable with it.

Look at a car that’s been painted by them and check the paintwork

along the rubber seams. A good shop will not just mask over the seam but

will paint under it.

Drivers today are way too impatient and it seems that people these days have no regard for the safety of other road users. Perhaps it’s the cost of car ownership that gives people a sense of entitlement.

Honestly, I don’t think tougher regulations or heavier fines can solve

these problems but I strongly believe that educating road users and raising awareness on road safety will. It will take time but if it’s done right, mindsets will change.

Maybe the cost of COEs and that of car ownership could be reduced so that people will be happier and less stressed. But seriously, as mentioned, the authorities should create more safety awareness and conduct more road safety and courtesy campaigns. I vividly remember such campaigns in the past. Educating people about road safety and courtesy is the way to go.

I strongly feel that implementing stiffer regulations or imposing heavier fines have an adverse effect. It will instead create a negative psychology that will cause people to behave in an even more defensive or self-centered manner.

I f there’s one thing that grabs the attention of Singaporeans other than property prices,

it’s the price of cars. No country in the world prizes their automobiles the way we do. But is that surprising? Cars here are arguably the most

numbers would result in traffic chaos. And we all know that we won’t get anywhere fast by driving if we are constantly stuck in jams. What would that do for national efficiency and productivity?

The high cost of automobile ownership

expensive in the world. There are obvious

reasons for this. The size of our country places a restriction on the number of roads, and in turn, the number of vehicles on them. If there weren’t any controls on the prices of cars, the increased

F E A T U R E

If you’re in the market for a car there are some things you need to know in order to make an educated decision. Here’s a primer on the process that could

make your road to new wheels smoother.

BUYING A CAR

makes buying – and for the most part, selling – a car a somewhat challenging exercise. Of course, we can always walk into a car showroom, pick out the one we like (and can afford), and sign on the dotted line. But when

22-25 Feature Buying a Car khl.indd 22 17/2/16 2:07 am

you consider that the numbers after the dollar sign can often go beyond a hundred thousand, you’d be well advised to make your choice wisely.

Here are several key issues to consider.

1 WHAT CAN YOU AFFORD TO PAY?

Naturally, the most important aspect is the cost. nless you’re flush with cash, you’re likely to take a car loan. In 2013, the Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) put in place a restriction that capped car loans at 50% for cars with Open Market Values (OMV, more on this later) higher than $20,000, and 60% for cars with OMV not exceeding $20,000.

ARF – ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION FEEThis is the tax imposed upon registration of a vehicle and is calculated as a percentage of the OMV.

is ofthefirst$20,000; 140% of the next $30,000; and 180% for amounts beyond $50,000.

PARF – PREFERENTIAL ADDITIONAL REGISTRATION FEEWhen a car is deregistered before 10 years of age, a Preferential Additional Registration Fee (PARF) rebate may be granted if the car is eligible for PARF benefit heP rebateis computed based on the age of the car when it is deregistered.

CEVS – CARBON EMISSIONS-BASED VEHICLE SCHEMEThis is a rebate that encourages owners to shift to low emission vehicles. Cars with low carbon emissions will qualify for rebates, which are offset against the car’s ARF payable (minimum ARF of $5,000). Cars with high carbon emissions will incur a corresponding registration surcharge.

ADDITIONAL FEESIn addition to the COE and ARF, car buyers also need to pay a registration fee of $140, and excise duty that amounts to 20% of the OMV.

OMV, ARF, PARF

THE ABCs OF TAXESAs Singaporeans, we

love our acronyms – and none more so than in the world of

taxes for cars. But what do they stand

for and what do they mean to us as car

owners? Here’s an explanation.

What’s more, the loan tenure cannot exceed five years for both old and used cars. This boils down to buyers needing to not only fork out more cash as down payment, but also make higher monthly instalments.

2 WHAT TYPE OF CAR?After you’ve

determined your budget, it’s time to go shopping. There are a great variety of car types out there and the one you decide on should meet your needs. Do you need a people mover to cart the family around? Do you need lots of space to store bicycles or golf bags? Or do you need a flashy number to satisfy your midlife crisis? Making this

decision early can save you a lot of time, not to mention heartache.

3 NEW OR USED?For those who don’t

necessarily need a brand-new car, this may be one of the most important decisions to make. There are obviously pros and cons for either choice. Used cars are obviously cheaper, but they come with more mileage and wear. And you never really know if they’ve given problems to their previous owners (a used car evaluation does help) or have been involved in accidents. But the drastic depreciation of the first couple of years would have been borne, and depending on how old

the car is, there may still be a few years left in the warranty.

Then again, if you must have the latest model available, there is only one way to go. New cars come with multi-year warranties, and for some, that new car smell can be irresistible.

4 BUY OR LEASE?Singapore car

ownership is a peculiar issue because of the need for a Certificate of Entitlement (COE) to own a car (more on this later). So in reality, the 10-year period of the COE makes car ownership a ‘lease’ in a way. With the increase in down payment put in place in 2013, the option of actually leasing a car from either a dealer or a leasing company may make sense. There are advantages to leasing – lower down payment;

servicing taken care of; and there’s no need to worry about road tax and insurance. But monthly payments are typically higher and leases may not be for more than a few years. This is something to consider if you only plan to drive here for a short time, or want to drive a dream car for a brief spell.

5 CERTIFICATE OF ENTITLEMENT (COE)

The question on every prospective car buyer’s lips these days is: will the price of the COE go up or down? The COE is what makes car ownership in Singapore unique, and so costly. Introduced in 1990 by the government, it was designed to control the number of cars on the roads by limiting the number of COEs at any one time.

As stipulated by the Land Transport Authority (LTA), the CO “represents a right to vehicle ownership and use of the limited road space for 10 years. At the end of the 10-year COE period, vehicle owners may choose to deregister their vehicle or to revalidate their CO s for another five-

[THE CERTIFICATE OF

ENTITLEMENT] IS DESIGNED TO

CONTROL THE NUMBER OF

CARS ON THE ROADS AT ANY

ONE TIMEor 10-year period by paying the Prevailing Quota Premium (a rolling average of COE premiums)”.

COEs are released through competitive bidding (there are two bidding exercises each month). You can do it yourself, but most of the time, the car dealers take care of it for you. Now, there are a couple of ways they can do this. Dealers can either offer you a guaranteed COE price where they absorb the risk of their bids, and you get your car whatever the result of the bidding exercise, or they can lower their maximum bidding price by offering you a corresponding discount. In the latter case, there is a risk that you won’t get your car if the bid is unsuccessful. Make sure you know which price you’re getting.

Something to note is that many cars in Singapore are at the end of the 10-year COE cycle this year and the next. That means that all things considered, you can expect more COE premiums to be made available in 2016. Whether this results in lower car prices is still anybody’s guess.

were used – and subtract its minimum PARF value (found in the vehicle’s log card), then divide it by 10 years. It’s important to note that commercial vehicles and vehicles that have had their COEs renewed are not eligible for a PARF rebate.

For example, if you bought a new car for $150,000 and its minimum PARF value is $30,000, its depreciation is $12,000 annually ($150,000 minus $30,000 and then divided by 10).

Taking the example further, if you were to sell your car with five years left on its CO , its “paper value”, or a rough guide as to how much it would fetch, would be $90,000 (i.e. $150,000 less the five-year depreciation amount of $60,000).

The same principle

applies if you bought a used car. A three-year-old car at $110,000 with a minimum PARF value of $30,000 would depreciate at a rate of $11,429 per year ($110,000 minus $30,000, divided by seven).

If you were to deregister and scrap that same car at the end of its 10-year COE, you’d be guaranteed a minimum of $30,000, on top of the nominal price you’d get for the car’s body.

The third option would be to deregister your vehicle and scrap it. Generally, this is reserved for cars that have reached the end of their 10-year COE, because otherwise, it makes more economic sense to sell it to a private owner or dealer.

THE SWEET SORROW OF PARTING

S elling a car in Singapore can be an equally mystifying

process.Basically, you can

either sell it directly to prospective buyers, or to a used car dealer. If you’re buying a new car, the car company will usually take in your car at trade-in value. If you’re selling it to a used car dealer, you’re likely to get less than if you were to go direct. But you will then need to deal with the hassle of ownership transfer and the like.

The next step is determining the value of the car you’re selling. The key issue here is that of depreciation. As an estimate, this is calculated by taking the car’s list price – or the price you bought it as if it

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERFORMANCE LAST YEAR.Locally, Honda saw a three-fold rise in sales volume in 2015 compared to 2014. New models such as the Odyssey, Jazz, City, HRV and Mobilio contributed to the sales volume.

WHAT NEW MODELS CAN WE EXPECT THIS YEAR?In 2016, new Honda models to expect are the Jade RS 1.5 Turbo and the much-awaited 10th generation Civic. The fifth-generation Honda Legend Sport Hybrid Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH AWD) was unveiled at the Motorshow, and there was also a sneak peek of the Honda Jade.

WHERE ARE CAR PRICES HEADED THIS YEAR? The COE quota will definitely grow in 2016. How this will affect the premiums will depend on the number of buyers entering the market and economic outlook in

Singapore. Generally, with a bigger quota, we should expect softer prices.

MERCEDES-BENZ WOLFGANG HUPPENBAUER, PRESIDENT & CEO, DAIMLER SOUTHEAST ASIA

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PERFORMANCE LAST YEAR.Mercedes-Benz achieved a fifth record year in a row with over 1.8 million vehicles sold worldwide in 2015, making it an increase of 13.4 . For the Singapore

market, Mercedes-Benz performed very well with over 5,500 units registered in 2015, according to LTA.

WHAT NEW MODELS CAN WE EXPECT THIS YEAR?For the Singapore Motorshow 2016, the A-Class facelift was the newest model at the Mercedes-Benz showcase and it was recently launched in Singapore in January. Some key highlights of the new A-Class include the new Apple® CarPlay®

for seamless access to the user’s smartphone, and the Dynamic Select offering four distinct driving modes for a personalised driving experience.

2016, the tentative line-up of cars to be launched are the C-Class Coupe, GLC and GLS. In the second half of 2016, it will be the highly anticipated E-Class, the C-Class Cabriolet, CLA Coupe and Shooting Brake facelift, GLC Coupe, S-Class Cabriolet, SLC facelift and SL facelift.

WHERE ARE CAR PRICES HEADED THIS YEAR? Mercedes-Benz is enjoying consistent sales performance despite a challenging global backdrop. We will continue to forge ahead with new customer-centric products, by placing the right and best products in the respective COE categories. COE prices are closely linked to the purchase of cars here. Consumers will be

increasingly focused on getting greater value for their vehicle purchase, which they will now probably keep for a longer period, and we have the right products for them.

ALL IN THE FAMILY

Somewhere along the way, for some of us, there comes a point where

kids become a part of our lives. With this, for a driver, practicality begins to rule over flashiness. This is usually the time

when space becomes a priority. The sporty car makes way for the sensible one. Like it or not, when this happens, we’ve entered the MPV zone.

Thankfully, the current spate of family mobiles

don’t completely swap function for form, or performance for that matter. Here are four models to consider if you have a growing brood to ferry around, but don’t want to relinquish the joy of driving.

Mazda seems to be having a resurgence, thanks to a series of handsome-looking vehicles that were progressively introduced over the past three years. Surprisingly, the Japanese make has not announced any facelift for this four-year-old model yet. So you may feel that this compact MPV may not blend in with the current Mazda fleet. Its nose grille, for one, comes across as slightly dated compared to its stylish sedan siblings.

In all likelihood, buyers of the Mazda 5 will be those looking for functionality over elegance, and thus the form factor may not be a must-have. This is, after all, an entry level MPV, good enough for ferrying up to seven passengers, although

the two seats on the third row are best suited for the smaller ones. Karakuri is a Japanese mechanical movement method originally used in puppets, and the term is aptly applied in Mazda 5’s Karakuri seventh seat, where a couple of easy folds unveil a neatly stored seat to accommodate that seventh passenger on the second row.

Drivewise, the car is powered by a fuel-efficient SkyActiv 2.0 litre four-cylinder petrol engine, capable of 151hp. It may not give you an adrenaline rush off the lights, but then again this MPV is more about looking at the rear-view mirror and feeling contented that you can pack the whole family in comfortably and safely as you go about your daily commute.

The French are known to understand a thing or two about style, and such inherent charisma goes beyond just fashion. A case in point is the 5008, Peugeot’s first compact MPV launched back in 2010. ven after more than five years on the road, the car remains relevant in terms of both design and practicality. It had a mid-life update in 2014, but the nip and tuck did not change its interior a great deal. Yet the look of the car continues to be a breath of fresh air, drawing much admiration, the way a vintage Chanel handbag still dazzles women today.

The 5008 is an easy vehicle to pilot, characterised by the high driving position

that gives the driver a commanding view. You do not even have to take your eyes off the road with the head-up retractable display screen showing all essential driver information. The 1.6 litre e-HDi FAP (Filter a Particules) turbo diesel power plant propels the 5008. It’s a highly efficient and clean engine that produces 112hp, mated to a six-speed gearbox with paddle shifters.

There are seven full-sized seats configured over three rows. All seats in the second and third row can be folded flat unveiling 2,056 litres of luggage space

or even removed, converting this MPV into a minivan of sorts. Even

It’s been 21 years in the life of this model, and with every generation it keeps setting the bar higher for the world of MPVs. Now into its fifth generation, Honda’s premium family vehicle is larger and more imposing, but moves with finesse and looks ever more suave with its feature-rich package.

Power sliding doors typical only on premium MPVs open on both sides to allow easy access. The EX model accommodates up to eight passengers, with bench-style seating offered on the second and third rows. The EXV variant comes with a pair of ultra luxurious cradle seats in the second row, complete with footrests. This

version takes one fewer passenger, but spoils all seven occupants with a comfortably silky ride.

The Honda Odyssey is not your typical MPV.

Features like a seven-inch touchscreen Display Audio System, Smart Parking Assist, Blind Spot Information, and powered by Honda’s famous DOHC i-VTEC engine, give the sense of a luxury car rather than a large minivan. The multi-view camera system is so sophisticated that it detects and warns of approaching vehicles when the driver is reversing out of a parking lot.

If anything, the five-year unlimited mileage warranty offered by the local agent, Kah Motor, will certainly give you a sense that you’ve found the best-value MPV in town.

You will be hard pressed to find an MPV where you can secure two child seats in the second row, and still allow the grandparents to access the third row of seats with ease. Most MPVs get a bench seating layout on the second row with no Isofix mountings on the middle seat. If you can identify with this situation, you will love the Volkswagen Sharan. With seven individual seats, you are able to fasten both child seats in the second row one in the middle and the other at the seat next to the door

while you easily access the third row by pushing forward and tilting the other outer seat on the second row.

At 4.85m long, the Sharan is the largest of the four cars featured here, and also the most costly. But if you are

willing to part with more to get more, you will not be short-changed because this vehicle is sufficiently specced to be an MPV of a different class.

Electrically controlled sliding doors, a pano-ramic sunroof that is 300 per cent larger than conventional sunroofs, and an advanced Park Assist system, are just some of the nice features found here. The turbocharged 2.0 litre engine with DSG dual-

Indochina continues to open up to

tourism, and there are few better

ways to explore the region than by road.

① The Khmer temple, Prasat Hin Phanom Rung.

② The Asean Friendship Caravan flags off in Bangkok, Thailand.

③ Orchards, nurseries and fields of flowering plants are found at the Jim Thompson Farm.

④ Boiling silkworm cocoons at the Jim Thompson Farm.

Imagine being able to just pack a bag and your passport, get into your car and drive

across different country borders for an extended holiday without the hassle of having to hop onto a plane, train or bus. If the members within the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC) could eventually come to an agreement about cross-border procedures, driving seamlessly between the countries in the region could be a reality in the near future.

That was the idea behind the ASEAN Friendship Caravan, a road trip of epic proportions. A convoy of 20 cars hit the road for 10 days through Thailand, Laos, Vietnam and Cambodia, bringing awareness of just such a possibility.

The group of 60-odd participants was led on this journey by Ms Duangdao Suwunarungsi, a photographer

and founder of Explorer Caravan. Ms Suwunarungsi was a former representative at the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), a sponsor of the event together with Toyota Thailand, which provided 20 of the latest Toyota Hilux Revo double-cab pickups.

Mr Yuthasak Supasorn, Governor of TAT, said: “This caravan aims to promote the readiness of Thailand as the ideal gateway to ASEAN, especially for land connectivity to the emerging destinations in the Mekong sub-region, as well as create a trend for overland connectivity travel to inspire fellow

travellers to start their journey and explore this beautiful region.”

Indeed, the participants discovered many lesser known gems of the countries they visited, on top of explorations of a few world-class sites. Here are some of the highlights of the trip.

T H A I L A N D The start of the nearly 3,400km journey was given a ceremonial send-off by senior representatives of TAT and Toyota Thailand in the wee hours of the morning in front of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration City Hall in central Bangkok. A police escort ensured a smooth ride out of Bangkok’s congested streets onto Route 304, heading towards the first stop, the Jim Thompson Farm located about 300km away in the northeastern province of Nakhon Ratchasima.

This was a rare opportunity to view the process of silk farming – and catch a glimpse of the local Isan way of life – as the farm is only opened briefly from early December to early January. Spread over 113ha, it is one of the more popular agro and eco-tourism spots in the region. traditional Isan village has been constructed on site, in an attempt to preserve the rich cultural heritage of the Thai-Lao people who live in this part of Thailand.

Way before we arrived at the majestic Angkor Wat in Cambodia – planned towards the end of the itinerary – Prasat Hin Phanom Rung, also known as the Phanom Rung Stone Castle, was an excellent introduction to Khmer temples. Built between 10th and 13th century AD as a Hindu shrine dedicated to Shiva, this temple complex is considered one of the most important Khmer ancient monuments in Thailand. Perched on the edge of an extinct volcano at an elevation of about 400m, it offers a panoramic view of the

surrounding area. A final attraction

of the drive towards the Laos border was a stopover at the Pha Taem National Park, located at the edge of the Thai-Laos border. Apart from the breathtaking views of the forested valley beyond, and through which the Mekong River flows, the park is best known for its prehistoric rock art. An easy trail descending to the foot of the cliff trail led to a series of paintings on the walls of rock faces, depicting elephants, turtles and giant catfish. Etchings of what appear to be triangular alien beings remain one of archaeology’s mysteries.

L A O S The best thing about the Thai-Laos border

LAOS SAFETY NOTETwo things to note when driving through Laos. First, cars are left-hand drive and thus driving is on the right side of the road, like in Europe and the US. Hence, driving in Laos with right-hand drive cars would require extra attention, especially when overtaking, as the driver’s line of sight of oncoming traffic from the left is restricted. This is also the case when driving in Vietnam and Cambodia.

Second, roads are dusty and many stretches are still under construction. Houses are built rather close to the roads, so there’s a need to keep a lookout for children playing near the edge of the roads, cyclists and scooters who tend to ride along the sides, cows, dogs, pigs and other farm animals which may stray onto the road.

crossing at Vang Tao in Laos was? The duty-free shopping. This is a great place to stock up on cheap beer, liquor and yummy Dao snacks and coffee to last the rest of the journey. The shops accept Thai baht and US dollars if you don’t have Lao Kip, or you could easily pay with a credit card.

To spice things up, instead of taking the scenic route to the next destination, the convoy went off track onto a bumpy and dusty dirt road to get to Vat Phou. The road certainly tested the agility of the pickups, with unavoidable deep and wide potholes for the most part of the 40km track.

Vat Phou is another Khmer Hindu temple complex, located at the base of Mount Phu Kao in the Champasak province. While the surviving structures date from the 11th to 13th centuries, it is believed that there was a temple on site as

early as the 5th century. The temple complex stretches all the way up the mountain, though much remains uncovered as little restoration has been done. Vat Phou has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001.

Although Laos is the only landlocked country in Southeast Asia, it is covered with lush vegetation and rugged mountains, which make for a scenic landscape. The convoy was fortunate to be able to drive through the Bolaven Plateau, one of the main attractions in the country, and visit two spectacular waterfalls.

Pha Suam Falls, about 33km north of Pakse where the convoy had stopped for the night, could, by a stretch of the imagination, be likened to a mini version of Niagara Falls. Just a short drive away was Tad Fane with its thin twin falls cascading some 100m into a deep gorge,

against a backdrop of verdant rainforest.

V I E T N A M The border crossing at Po Y was surprisingly quiet and free of traffic. In no time, the convoy was through and driving on Vietnamese land, heading towards Kontum. It was like passing through a time warp after Laos, as the roads here were well-built, wide with two lanes going each way, and interspersed with massive roundabouts.

After a night’s rest in Kontum, the convoy headed out for what was to be the longest drive of the trip, about 10 to 11 hours on the road

towards the mountain resort of Dalat. It was like going through another time warp because suddenly it felt like we had arrived at a French alpine ski resort in summer. The buildings were mainly French-inspired, with houses and villas reminiscent of chalets in the Alps. There was even a downsized version of the Eiffel Tower looming over the town centre. Because of its year-round cool temperatures, Dalat is best known for its agricultural produce, in particular vegetables, flowers and fruits normally only grown in temperate countries.

q

9

From the cool climes of the mountain, the convoy descended towards the coast heading for the sand dunes of Mui Dinh and Mui Ne, about 217km from Ho Chi Minh City.

The drive first took the cars along an undulating mountain road with sharp curves and hairpin bends before arriving at the sea, where it hugged the winding coast offering distractingly amazing views of the sea.

At Mui Dinh, the more adventurous drivers in the convoy were given the chance to test their skills by driving through the desert-like dunes. It was a heart-thumping experience for the drivers, who had to try their best not to get stuck in the soft sands.

C A M B O D I A The most notable thing after crossing into Cambodia at Bavet was the number of casino hotels that lined the road. Some looked grand with equally impressive names to match, like Las

Vegas Sun Hotel and Le Macau Casino and Hotel. It wasn’t long before that gave way to more idyllic rustic scenes. From the border, it was only 170km on a good road to Phnom Penh, via Svay Rieng, giving participants an opportunity to drive across the recently-opened Neak Loeung Bridge.

The Japanese-funded bridge is significant for a number of reasons. It is the longest bridge over the Mekong in Cambodia at 2km and it eliminates the tiresome ferry crossing for a busy transport route between two important commercial towns.

Finally, after a nine-day journey crossing three borders, the convoy arrived at the incomparable Angkor in Siem Reap. Angkor is, of course, home to Angkor Wat, arguably the largest religious monument in the world. The entire temple complex is spread over 400sq km and it is believed that at one time, the temples in Angkor numbered more than a thousand. It is today one of the most important archaeological sites in Southeast Asia, and has been a UNESCO

World Heritage Site since 1992. Besides the iconic Angkor Wat, the other temples in the area also offer many happy hours of exploration, like the Bayon in Angkor Thom with its four-face towers and Ta Prohm, recognised for the trees growing out of the temple ruins.

The sacred city with its tumultuous past certainly marked a fitting end to an epic journey, having provided participants with myriad adventures that showcased the rich diversity of each country we visited.

HAPPENING HODGEPODGEThe expected sultry spices, bargain shopping and manic street life of Little India are all still here, but it’s also now brimming with hipster cafes, budget-friendly boutique hotels and trendy craft beer halls.

Sir Stamford Raffles never drew today’s Little India onto his town plan map back in 1822. Much like Chinatown, Raffles planned for Indians to settle in a designated district west of the Singapore River, but the booming cattle trade on the banks of the Serangoon River demanded good cattlemen, and the neighbourhood soon became crowded, so Indians began to move east.

Singapore boomed during the 19th century, and with it, Little India grew. Before long, spice merchants, curry houses, sari shops, restaurants and other businesses catering to Indian tastes cropped up. Soon, a trip to Serangoon Road became akin to strolling

the streets of Chennai. This legacy lingers

today, as Serangoon Road remains the commercial centre of Singapore’s Indian community. But the

heritage district is more diverse – ethnically and commercially – than it’s ever been. In today’s Little India you can share a pint with backpackers, dine with Indian expats,

buy saris, and sip single-origin coffee without having to walk more than a few blocks. The frantic energy remains and like Singapore itself, Little India refuses to stand still.

The hot and crispy masala dosa (fermented Indian crepe) here is so iconic that Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong invited India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi to dine with him at the restaurant during his visit last November. The founder, Murugiah Rajoo, started serving up South Indian vegetarian dishes on the customary fresh banana leaves from this spot way back in 1947 and, thankfully, little has changed since then.

A tranquil reprieve from Race Course Road’s blaring engines and crammed cafes, Mustard’s lauded Bengali and Punjabi cuisine – from Punjab’s tender kebabs to Bengali prawn curry – is an uncommon combination done well.

Named after the crucial ingredient that ties both cuisines together, the menu is colour-coded for each region and fiery dishes are courteously labelled for chilli-coy customers.

This is the original location of a chain spanning Singapore, Hong Kong, Taiwan and China, and was once awarded one star in Wine & Dine magazine’s search for Singapore’s top restaurant.

Putien offers a feast of Fujian-style comfort food, including Heng Hwa favourites like their signature Lor Mee and Fried Hing Wa Beehoon.

Shanghainese and Hong Kong dim sum hit the spot with late-night revellers. The xiao long bao is a must, and the chefs entertain by kneading, slamming, pulling and stretching dough into fine la mian noodles.

Not everyone can throw down $300 to $500 per person on a fine-dining sushi restaurant, so those who want quality sushi at a reasonable price can look to the Les Amis Group’s Sushi Jin. Try the omakase (“I’ll leave it up to you”) dinner, and the chef will take care of you, slicing his sashimi from fresh ingredients flown in thrice a week from Tsukiji Market in Tokyo.
