Ever wonder what it’s like to be inside of Bill Gates house or on the Star Trek Enterprise? The Internet of Things has brought this reality and using the Internet of Things can

help your library run smoother, cheaper and more efficiently. This webinar will cover the ins and outs of

putting together an automated environment.

Devices to buy and what they’ll do*

*Note: We’re keeping focused there are 1000’s of automation tools… And we only have an hour. ;)

The Manufacturers• Tons of companies creating lots of things• Only a few major companies tie it all

together• Iris – (Sold by Lowe’s)• Control4• Wink• SmartThings – (Made by Samsung)

• Lesser known companies• Savant• Vera• HomeSeer• Notion (New Technology)

Page 8: Automating with the Internet of Things

The Communication Protocols• X10 – Developed in 1970's most simple protocol; uses power lines in home to communicate.

Its low cost, but can only perform about 16 commands at once• Insteon – Combines wired and wireless communication but can support 65000 different

commands. • ZigBee – a wireless mesh network of devices where each devices acts as a relay to send and

receive information. However, devices from one manufacturer may not be able to communicate to other manufacture; as there is no standard of communication or programming. • Z-Wave is a the new golden standard of smart home communication. Very similar to ZigBee

however the devices are universally compatible with each other regardless of manufacturer. It's not as fast and powerful as ZigBee but is more efficient (thus not needing to be as fast and powerful)• Non Specific:• This includes NFC (close proximity for things to communicate), Bluetooth, and Wireless

are also being used in a lot of home automated devices.

Page 9: Automating with the Internet of Things

The Automation Bridge• Compatibility between

systems• Ties all your devices together• Runs Activity Scripting• Lets all devices talk together• Not all Hubs/Bridges work

with every device.

Voice Control w/ Alexa• Made by Amazon• Does really cool stuff• Main Voice Control Unit for

Automation

Security Monitoring• Many ways to monitor• Video Based• Motion Based• Ambient Noise

• Preferred way is your way• Most are Easy to Install

Page 13: Automating with the Internet of Things

Touchscreen Interfaces• Phone like wall switches (Check!)• Tablet Wall Mounts (Check!)• Tons of Mount Options (Check! &

Check!)

Remote Notifications• Cellphone, Tablet, Smart watch• Notifications anywhere

Page 17: Automating with the Internet of Things

Scripting Activities• Easy scripting to automate

functions• Turn lights on when someone

approaches• Adjust temp based on outdoor

temp• Unlock door have lights, TVs, and

other devices turn on.

Quick Tips to Install

Wiring & No Wiring // Plug and Play // Software Configurations

Page 20: Automating with the Internet of Things

Tips for use in Libraries• Depending on your codes and organization; you may need a certified

electrician to install these things. • However, some of this involves no actual wiring!• You will need to involve your IT Department with setting up things on

a wireless network. It may be beneficial to create a separate network for your automated library.

Page 21: Automating with the Internet of Things

Installs• Many devices are plug an play• Typically very simple installs with

mainstream products• Professional line products will

require assistance

Page 22: Automating with the Internet of Things

Basic Install – Smart Lock• August smart lock install• Ever install a Deadbolt lock?• An August smart lock is just

that easy.• Remove Interior Deadbolt latch• Replace with August• Configure via Remote setup

instructions.• DONE!

Page 23: Automating with the Internet of Things

Basic Install – Nest Thermostat• All versions are quick installs• Label your wires• Remove your old thermostat• Plug-in Wires into Nest base• Finish install and snap Nest into

place• Configure wireless from Nest• Setup schedule from any device

Page 24: Automating with the Internet of Things

Basic Install Dropcam & Canary• The install is in the name with

Dropcam• Plug it in to your laptop• Configure via the install app

embedded on device• Connect to wall outlet• DONE!• Canary very similar install process

What you NEED to get…. NOW!• Lights• Camera• ACTION! Or a Hub• Thermostat• Smart Controlled outlets

• Will get you running and saving• Also builds simple security

Page 27: Automating with the Internet of Things

Future Expansion• Advanced Security• Window Monitors• Door Locks• More Cameras (Inside & Out)

• Touchscreen Interfaces• Motion Sensors• Window Treatments• Voice Control

The Library of the Future• A More Energy Efficient Library• Heating/Cooling - based on room occupancy, outside temp, etc.• Lighting / Dimming of lights – based on windows / motion

• A More Interactive Library• Light Up sections of the library in different colors when patrons walk by (use the

LED Lights)• A More Secure Library• From Cameras to Locks to Motion Sensors. Room Reservation systems can be

locked till a patron gets texted the "unique" code to be let in during their reservation

• A More Data Driven Library• Build analytics based on movement, how frequently does one area of the library

get traffic versus the other. Count Patrons entering the door. Endless options.
