Getting to Know Your AURA Green Line Hybrid2

DRIVING YOUR HYBRIDYour AURA Hybrid accelerates, shiftsand brakes just like a regular vehicle, but it has several fuel-saving featuresthat increase vehicle efficiency andmaximize fuel economy. The hybrid features of your vehicle areenabled after the engine warms up toproper operating temperature. While driving, when you apply the brakeand come to a complete stop, the auto-matic engine start/stop feature may turnoff the engine. The engine will restart

when the brake pedal is released. Thisfuel-saving feature is referred to as thevehicle’s Auto Stop mode.Your AURA Hybrid also has anadditional hybrid battery. This hybridbattery stores power for use when thevehicle’s gas engine is briefly off whilein Auto Stop mode and supplies powerfor the electric motor when providingacceleration assist. The hybrid batteryis recharged by the vehicle duringdeceleration and while driving efficiently. It does not need to be plugged into anelectrical outlet.

The primary components and features ofyour AURA hybrid system include:A. Advanced Nickel Metal Hydride

Battery PackB. Regenerative Braking

C. 2.4 Liter 4-cylinder Ecotec EngineD. Power ElectronicsE. 12-Volt Battery and AccessoriesF. Engine Control Module

Along with the advanced technologyfeatures of the AURA Hybrid, yourdriving behavior is a big contributor tothe vehicle’s fuel economy. Modifyingyour driving behavior so that the ecolight turns on frequently will improveyour fuel mileage. Here are several fuel-saving driving tips:• Avoid quick starts and stops.

Accelerate moderately and drive at asteady speed.

• Anticipate traffic flow and brakemoderately or coast.

• Regularly check and maintain propertire pressure.

• Use the air conditioning and defrostonly when necessary to reduce theload on the engine.

• Use the hybrid air conditioning modeinstead of the normal mode to enablethe Auto Stop feature.

• Minimize electrical accessory opera-tion by turning off items such as therear defogger when they are notneeded.

• Unload unnecessary cargo to reducethe amount of weight in the vehicle.

• Combine short trips to minimize coldengine starts, which reduce fueleconomy.

• Do not warm up the engine by idling.Even on the coldest days, driving willhelp the engine warm up faster.

eco Light

As mentioned previously, when youapply the brake and come to a completestop, the automatic engine start/stopsystem may stop the engine. While thevehicle is in Auto Stop mode, the needleon the tachometer moves to the AUTOSTOP mark. Whenyou take your footoff the brake pedalor press the accel-erator pedal, theengine will startagain.

Maximizing Fuel Economy

The eco lightlocated abovethe fuel gaugeilluminateswhen vehiclefuel efficiencyis maximized. The eco light will beginoperation only after the engine haswarmed up.To disable the eco light feature:1. With the engine off, turn the key to On.2. Press the INFO (Information) button

to display the outside temperatureand odometer on the DIC.

3. Press and hold the (Reset) buttonfor several seconds.

4. The eco light will flash several timesand then turn off.

Repeat this procedure to enable the ecolight feature.See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Note: The Auto Stop mode is limited toa maximum of two minutes per stop. After two minutes (or less in somecases) in Auto Stop mode, the enginewill restart and continue running untilthe next time the vehicle comes to acomplete stop.

During an Auto Stop, all of the regularvehicle features are available, such aspower steering and brakes, the audiosystem and power accessories.Your AURA Hybrid also features a hillstart assist system that will help hold thevehicle when the brakes are releasedafter stopping on an incline with theengine off in Auto Stop mode. Uponbrake pedal release, the vehicle mayroll backward slightly until the engine isrestarted. After parking the vehicle and turning offthe engine by rotating the key to the Offposition, the tachometer needle willmove to OFF.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

The Engine Will Not Go Into Auto Stop Mode When:

The engine may remain running at acomplete stop under certain conditions. Some conditions that would lead to anengine start/stop override include:• The engine or transmission is not yet

warmed up.• The normal air conditioning mode

( ) or defrost mode is selected.• The engine is required to run for

climate control heating and/or coolingperformance.

• The shift lever is in Neutral, Reverse(R), Intermediate (I) or Low (L).

• The hybrid battery pack charge is low.• The hood is not fully closed.• The Check Engine light is illuminated.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

The Engine Will Restart When:

While driving, with the vehicle stoppedand the engine off in Auto Stop mode, theautomatic engine start/stop system maycause the engine to restart under certainconditions. Some conditions that wouldlead to an engine restart include:• The brake pedal is released while in

Drive (D).• The accelerator is applied.• The transmission is shifted out of

Drive.• The climate control system is turned

from Off to On.• The hybrid air conditioning mode

( ) is selected, and the climatecontrol system turns on to cool thepassenger compartment during a stopdue to a warm outside temperature.

• The hybrid battery pack chargebecomes low and requires recharging.

• Auto Stop time exceeds approximatelytwo minutes.

See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Hybrid Battery Power

Your vehicle has a standard 12-voltbattery, located under the hood, and a36-volt hybrid battery system. The hybridbattery, located behind the rear seat, provides power to the hybrid system’selectric motor and is recharged duringdeceleration or when driving efficiently.See Section 5 of your Owner Manual.

The amount of charge flowing into andout of the vehicle’s hybrid battery isdisplayed on the Charge/Assist gaugeon the instrument panel cluster.Under normal drivingconditions, the gaugeneedle should be cen-tered between Chargeand Assist or slightlyin the Assist range. When the electricmotor is assistingthe engine, such asduring maximum acceleration, the gaugeneedle will move into the Assist range. When the electric motor operates as agenerator during regenerative brakingwhile decelerating, the gauge needle willmove into the Charge range. The hybrid battery also will charge if thehybrid system determines that it is anefficient time. If the hybrid battery orother hybrid components are very hot orcold, the Charge and Assist functionsmay be suspended until the componenttemperatures are normal.See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Regenerative braking recaptures some ofthe energy from the moving vehicle andturns it into electrical energy. This energyis then stored in the vehicle’s hybridbattery for later use by the hybrid system, contributing to increased fuel efficiency.See Section 2 of your Owner Manual.

Air Conditioning Modes

There are two air conditioning modesyou may select on your AURA Hybrid:hybrid mode ( ) and normal mode( ).

The hybrid mode ( ) helps maximizefuel economy by optimizing the air condi-tioning. During an Auto Stop in this mode, the engine normally turns off, but it mayrestart or continue to run if the systemdetermines that it is necessary to run theair conditioning (based on the outsidetemperature) to cool the passengercompartment or dehumidify the air.In the normal mode ( ), the engine willcontinue to run at all times to providemaximum air conditioning performance. To get the most engine off time andthe highest fuel savings, turn off the airconditioning and turn the fan and airflowknobs to the AUTO position. This willallow the system to turn off the engine atcomplete stops.See Section 3 of your Owner Manual.

Charge/Assist Gauge

Regenerative Braking

Regenerative braking works wheneveryou take your foot off the acceleratorpedal while your vehicle is moving inDrive (D), Intermediate (I) or Low (L)gear. This causes your vehicle to slowdown slightly faster than a typical auto-matic transmission-equipped vehicle. Itmay feel like coasting with a manualtransmission, or like the brake pedal isbeing pressed lightly even when it is not.
