Automated Waste Collection SystemStep One: Record your serial number• Each cart comes with a unique serial number

that is specific to your address. Please make a record of this in case your cart is stolen or damaged, it will help us to identify it.

Step Two: Follow the program• Please don’t overfill the cart; you must be able

to close the lid completely after the garbage is placed inside.

• Set your cart out by 7 a.m. on the day of pick-up at the proper location (front curb or back alley). See reverse page to determine your pick-up date.

• Please put the cart away by 7 p.m. and store it in a secure area until the next pick-up, as described in bylaw 4211/2008.

Step Three: Cart PlacementPark it: Place wheels 30 cm (1 ft) from your front curb, or 0.5 metres (18 in) from back hedge or fence. Park it on level ground and make sure you are not blocking traffic.

Point it: Point arrows on the lid toward the center of the road or alley.

Space it:Provide at least 1 metre (3 ft.) around front and sides. Do not place under eaves and trees. The automated collection arm needs room to grab the cart.

Take it:Take your cart back onto your property by 7 p.m. until next collection day. Note Bylaw 4211/2008: “Any person who contravenes a provision of this Bylaw is guilty of an offence and is liable of a fine up to $1,000.”

Each residence is supplied with a wheeled 240 litre cart (which can hold 3-4 bags) to fill with bagged and tied household waste. Home owners have the option of requesting a larger 360 litre cart by calling the Operations Department at 403.652.4657, which carries an additional monthly charge. Please note carts are the property of the Town of High River and are assigned to a specific address.

safe storage of their cart.

Damaged or stolen cart? • Call the Town of High River immediately so we

can get you a replacement cart.• Please note: It is the responsibility of the

homeowner to care for the cart and they will be required to pay for a replacement cart if damages/loss is the result of negligence.

Are You Moving?• Please let us know and DO NOT take the cart

with you. It is Town property and it is assigned to your house address, not to a specific individual.

What Not to put in your garbage cart• Propane cylinders, tires, automotive batteries,

corrosive cleaners, pesticides/herbicides, gasoline, engine oil containers, solvents, thinners, pharmaceuticals/drugs and aerosol cans

• Animal carcasses, construction/demolition wastes, household appliances, furniture and electronics.

Why automate?Automated waste collection provides faster, cleaner service to the residents of High River, as well as safer working conditions for waste handlers.

Faster:A one-man truck can collect at a much more efficient rate than a manual system. The cost savings can then be redirected to other services.

Easier:The wheeled carts are compact, weather-proof, easy to move and extremely durable. Residents only need to wheel their cart to the curb (or alley) by 7 a.m. and take it back onto their property by 7 p.m. when it’s empty.

Cleaner:Although garbage still needs to be bagged, the sturdy carts protect it from animals and birds.

Safer:Because there is less need to manually haul heavy garbage bags and containers, workers experience fewer injuries, saving money on time lost and WCB claims.

What do we accept from residents? Not for recycling:

Please do not leave recyclables if the bins are full. Southern Alberta experiences windy conditions and, if it’s not in a recycling cart, it will probably end up littering the town.
